THE BODYGUARD The international smash-hit musical “The Bodyguard” is heading to Brisbane this month. Based on the Warner Bros. movie which starred Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner, “The Bodyguard” was hailed as ‘London’s Best Musical’ by UK’s Magic FM. Former Secret Service agent turned bodyguard, Frank Farmer, is hired to protect superstar Rachel Marron from an unknown stalker. Each expects to be in charge—what they don’t expect is to fall in love. Starring Australia’s own Paulini, Kip Gamblin and Prinnie Stevens, “The Bodyguard” is a worldwide live theatre phenomenon you won’t want to miss. 19 July–13 August, Lyric Theatre, QPAC, cnr Grey and Melbourne Streets, South Bank. 136 246. qpac.com.au

Kip Gamblin and Paulini star in “The Bodyguard”. Photo: © Jeff Busby.

‘Enoch Arden’ at QPAC Two of Australia’s finest storytellers, actor John Bell and pianist Simon Tedeschi, break new ground with a new performance of the great melodrama “Enoch Arden”, a deeply moving tale of love, loss, redemption and shipwreck, told through spoken word and solo piano. The poem “Enoch Arden” was published in 1864 while Alfred, Lord Tennyson was Queen Victoria’s Poet Laureate; Richard Strauss wrote a piano score to accompany its recitation in 1897. A national living treasure and renowned Bell Shakespeare founder, John Bell commands any stage, while Simon Tedeschi, as the hands of David Helfgott in the film “Shine” and a concert pianist to numerous world leaders, is a musician firmly of our time. Surrender to this enthrallingly intense tale of a ship’s captain lost at sea and returning to a reality that has evolved without him. Then re-enter the evening in the glow of a great story, truly heard. Simon Tedeschi. Photo: Cole Bennetts.

MICHELE LEE’S ‘RICE’ Winner of the Queensland Premier’s Drama Award 2016–2017, Michele Lee’s first mainstage play “Rice” sets the personal politics of two women against the global politics of the world food economy. A co-production between the Queensland Theatre Company and Griffin Theatre Company in Sydney, “Rice” is the story of two multicultural women making their way in modern Australia who forge a powerful, if unlikely, friendship that gets results. Working late, high up in a skyscraper, Nisha, at 28, a business prodigy and second-in-command of an Australian rice company, is closing a massive deal with the Indian government. Working later still is Yvette, who clears up her take-away. “Indian princess” and “Chinese cleaner” is all they see when they face each other across the desk. They are from different cultures, different generations—but as the nights wear on, they discover the many ties that bind them, and help each other navigate their complex lives. Ruddigore, or the Witch’s Curse Gothic horror, humour and hijinks will be the order of the day when Opera Queensland takes on Gilbert & Sullivan’s “Ruddigore, or the Witch’s Curse”. The show follows the shy and law-abiding, gentleman farmer Robin Oakapple who is working up the courage to ask the beautiful Rose Maybud to marry him. But he has a dark secret; he is the heir to a terrible curse befalling all Baronets of Ruddigore and has been living in disguise to escape his fate. When the truth is discovered, Robin is bound to obey the family curse that dictates he must commit a dastardly crime every day—or face a torturous death. 14–29 July, The Playhouse, QPAC, cnr Grey and Melbourne Streets, South Bank. 136 246. qpac.com.au

Four generations of one family take the stage, as Jimi’s grandmother, mother, son and brothers help him spin yarns of totems, traditions and childhood memories. 22 July–13 August, Bille Brown Studio, 78 Montague Road, South Brisbane. 1800 355 528. queenslandtheatre.com.au

Culture aficionados can also explore the more traditional Queensland Art Gallery or the Queensland Museum and Sciencentre which continues to evolve with the addition of high tech installations. The latter is a big hit with kids of all ages. Across the road at South Bank Parklands you can take to the sky on The Wheel of Brisbane, a giant observation wheel which takes you high above the city. SHOPPING SECRETS South Bank is home to a number of eclectic creative markets. If you have an appetite for the unusual and like to browse, visit the Collective Markets, which take place on Fridays at the Stanley Street Plaza from 5pm to 9pm, Saturdays from 10am to 9pm and Sundays from 9am to 4pm. Here you can pick up handmade fashion, vintage collectibles, jewellery, homewares and furniture at affordable prices. Little Stanley Street plays host to the Young Designers Market on the first Sunday of every month from 10am to 4pm. Everything at this market is handmade by the stall holders. For many of these creative entrepreneurs, showing at the market is the first step towards the commercialisation of their designs so you will also be helping a talented up-and-comer get a head start in the industry. Chatting to the creators is one of the pleasures of shopping at this colourful market. WHERE TO EAT South Bank has a dazzling selection of restaurants and cafés, many of which capitalise on Queensland’s love of outdoor dining. South Bank Surf Club overlooks the famous swimming lagoon and gives an inner-city twist to the

traditional Aussie surf club. It is a great spot for a drink and a bite to eat on a sunny afternoon. Alongside the river there is River Quay, a collection of sleek dining options ranging from champagne breakfasts at River Quay Fish to rustic Italian share plates at Popolo and the steakhouse sophistication of Stokehouse Q. Fresh seafood, home-style favourites and an Indonesian influence can be found at The Jetty, while Francophiles will appreciate Aquitaine Brasserie, a charming alfresco diner offering a delicious taste of France with classic dishes such as Marseille bouillabaisse. Nearby Grey Street offers an equally impressive choice of dining options. The vibe here tends to be more lively,

especially at Ole, a Spanish restaurant with a dedicated sangria bar. Share plates are a feature here making this a great spot to visit with colleagues or friends. Try The Spaghetti House Trattoria if you’re in the mood for traditional Italian favourites served in a stylish but homely space. Ahmet’s is the place to go for Turkish cuisine while Torba Restaurant & Lounge offers a contemporary take on Russia’s exotic opulence with velvet drapes, glittering chandeliers and a sultry purple colour scheme. Try a selection of European wines and a variety of Russian vodkas and vodka-based cocktails, such as Kalinka and Balalaika. AT 287 METRES above sea level,

Mt Coot-tha might be little more than a large hill, but it’s the best place to see Brisbane, from the suburbs to the ocean. Reach Mt Coot-tha Lookout by driving from the inner city on Milton Road and the winding Sir Samuel Griffith Drive. From the viewing platform, you’ll see why people have been heading up the mountain to enjoy the panorama both day and night for more than 180 years. At the lookout, take in the view with a coffee or snack from Kuta Café or indulge with fine dining at the Summit Restaurant. The Summit Restaurant building was redeveloped in the 1980s incorporating the second Federation-style kiosk built in 1918. Today, the Summit Restaurant is an award-winning venue with a menu that focuses on quality Queensland produce, and stunning vistas. Mt Coot-tha has many different picnic spots located along the road, but J.C. Slaughter Falls at the base of the mountain is one of the most popular. Along with plenty of barbecues and picnic tables, it has a burbling creek meandering through the middle. Mined for gold between 1890 and 1950, during the war years Mt Coot-tha was a military base and explosives depot. You’ll find reminders of this history on the walking trails that criss-cross the slopes. The western side is popular with mountain bike riders while

those walking tracks are a training ground for adventurers. At the base of the mountain is the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, 52 hectares of landscaped subtropical greenery, open every day from 8am to 5pm. Entry is free and there are also free guided walks Monday through Saturday at 11am and 1pm which leave from the Information Desk. A good place to relax with refreshments is the Botanical Café. Open daily from 9am to 4pm on weekdays and 8am to 5pm on weekends, it’s located near an entrance to the gardens and has a covered deck overlooking a picturesque lake.

As you stroll along the winding garden paths, you’ll discover a Japanese Garden, Bonsai House, Fern House, areas of exotic rainforest, a lagoon and bamboo grove and dedicated activities for children. The Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium was named after the Governor of the New South Wales colony who arrived in 1821 and charted an unknown southern sky. The centre’s optical star projector creates a replica night sky, and regular shows are a feature. Mt Coot-tha is a 20-minute drive by car from Brisbane’s CBD and can also be accessed by bus.

ASSISTANT CONCIERGE, EMPORIUM BRISBANE

■ The Les Clefs d’Or Annual General Meeting is on this month, and I am excited to say that this will again be held in Brisbane at the Sofitel Brisbane Central from 9–10 July. Attracting approximately 50 members from across Australia and New Zealand, again it will be great to showcase our beautiful city. The meeting culminates with the return of this year’s Concierge and Hospitality Ball. The Ball will be held at the Sofitel Brisbane Ballroom on 10 July. Tickets are selling fast so make sure you get yours before they sell out. The ball will also be raising money for the charity The White Cloud Foundation and is a fantastic night of networking for the hospitality industry. This black-tie ball is not to be missed, with the fantastic “California Dreaming” theme, so get your glamorous frocks and suits ready! Log onto stickytickets.com.au/52572 to get your tickets. The ticket price is $130 per person including a three-course meal and four-hour beverage package, lucky door prizes and live band.
