PUPPET PEOPLE: A SNAPSHOT OF AUSTRALIAN PUPPETRY The fascinating history of puppetry in Australia is explored in this free exhibition now showing at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre. Puppetry arrived in Australia in the form of Punch and Judy shows in the 1840s. Since that time, a rich tradition of Australian puppetry performance has grown to encompass a multitude of styles from traditional to avant-garde, often reflecting social and cultural change. This exhibition features more than 50 puppets, and showcases just some of the people and companies who brought the puppets to life. Queensland Ballet’s ‘Peter Pan’ Take the hand of Peter Pan and come on a journey to the fabled Neverland. Wendy and her two brothers literally fly into the adventure of a lifetime when Peter Pan leads them to a fantastical imaginary world of fairies, mermaids, pirates and one very large crocodile. With swashbuckling sword fights, oversized puppets and breathtaking flying sequences, Trey McIntyre’s “Peter Pan” uses a brilliant mix of dance and theatre to tell the tale of the boy who never grew up. Told from a child’s perspective, this imaginative ballet re-interprets J M Barrie’s famous story with wit, verve and a distinctly modern spirit. Peter Pan may not have grown up, but his story has. Doo-Bop Jazz Bar has a number of impressive acts not to be missed this month. Start the week off with Monday Sessions, The Toby Wren Trio (6 Nov) is one of Australia’s leading jazz ensembles characterised by its harmony, rhythm and depth. Celebrate Melbourne Cup (7 Nov) in swinging, sophisticated style, Sydney-based MC/Jazz extraordinaire George Washingmachine hosts ticketed all-inclusive events in the basement Jazz Bar, while the Angela Fabian Duo lights up the piano bar with original music as nature intended: powerful, intelligent and wild. Leading you into the night is John Delord, his vocabulary is a rich international blend of rnb, soul, funk, reggae and a pinch of sega, tempting you onto the dance floor. What better way to watch the Cup!

Gerhard Richter has proven his remarkable command of almost every style and genre of painting over the past 50 years. From romantic landscapes to visceral overpainted photographs, tender personal portraits to monumental abstracts, this exhibition gives a detailed insight into the work of one of the world’s most “Orchid”. © Gerhard Richter. influential living artists. Exclusive to Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art, “Gerhard Richter: The Life of Images” is the German artist’s first major Australian exhibition, with loans from public and private collections in Europe, North America, Asia and Australia, including the artist’s own collection. MAGIC ON MORETON Surf sand dunes, spot whales and feed wild dolphins on the world’s third-largest sand island. By Christine Knight

TANGALOOMA ISLAND RESORT is located on Moreton Island, only 40 kilometres, or a short ferry ride, from Brisbane, making it one of the easiest islands to get to in Australia. Take a day trip or a few days to explore, unwind and enjoy this little slice of paradise.

Feed the wild dolphins Every evening after sunset, two close-knit families of bottlenose dolphins arrive at Tangalooma to be hand-fed by guests. The same families of dolphins have been visiting the island for over 25 years. The resort owners, the Osbourne family, implemented a regimented feeding program to protect the welfare of the dolphins after they found resort guests to be feeding the dolphins bits of bait and fishing offcuts. As these are wild dolphins, they arrive of their own accord. Each evening they are fed between 10 and 20 percent of their daily food requirement, which ensures they still need to hunt for their food to survive and don’t become dependent on humans. As dolphins have sensitive skin, touching them isn’t permitted. To take part in the Tangalooma Wild Dolphin Feeding, you must be a guest

staying in Tangalooma Island Resort accommodation or visiting on selected day cruises.

Snap a whale From June to November each year, around 15,000 humpback whales make their way past Moreton Island during their annual migration. Whales can be spotted as close as 100 metres east off the island, but the best way to spot one of these ocean beauties is with a whale watching tour to see the whales breach, feed and splash their tails in the ocean.

Snorkel the shipwrecks 15 ships were sunk by the Queensland Government just off the shore of Moreton Island. They are now a popular place to snorkel and see the rich sea life in the bay. Standard kayaks are available for hire to

South Bank Secrets

By Tiana Templeman

IT IS EARLY evening at South Bank and things are hotting up. The sound of people having fun mingles with soft jazz from a nearby restaurant and the heady scent of frangipani fills the air. Elegant fashionistas share the streets with tourists wearing t-shirts and there is no cut-off age limit for enjoying a night out. South Bank has an excitement all its own and some of the best shopping, drinking, dining and entertainment options in Brisbane. With charming

markets, excellent restaurants, alfresco bars and cultural activities galore, there has never been a better time to visit. THINGS TO DO South Bank is well known for its swimming lagoon Streets Beach, but there are plenty of alternative activities for those who prefer to stay dry. The Gallery of Modern Art, or GOMA as it is affectionately known, has an international reputation for hosting exhibitions that are the envy of other

galleries with the likes of Picasso, Matisse and Warhol drawing record crowds. Culture aficionados can also explore the more traditional Queensland Art Gallery or the Queensland Museum and Sciencentre which continues to evolve with the addition of high-tech installations. The latter is a big hit with kids of all ages. Across the road at South Bank Parklands you can take to the sky on The Wheel of Brisbane, a giant observation wheel which takes you high above the city. If you would prefer to take to the water, River City Cruises offer a range of relaxing tours which include a hop-off option so you can explore further afield. Another popular attraction with a maritime theme can be found at the southern end of the Parklands. The Queensland Maritime Museum houses historical maritime artefacts, photographs and paintings in its collection, alongside numerous vessels which you can explore, such as the World War II frigate HMAS Diamantina and the powerful steam tug Forceful. It is a hands-on museum run by passionate volunteers, many of whom are retired ship masters, marine engineers and ex-naval personnel.

SHOPPING SECRETS South Bank is home to a number of eclectic creative markets. If you have an appetite for the unusual and like to browse, visit the Collective Markets, which take place on Fridays at the Stanley Street Plaza from 5pm to 9pm, Saturdays from 10am to 9pm and Sundays from 9am to 4pm. Here you can pick up handmade fashion, vintage collectibles, jewellery, homewares and furniture at affordable prices. Little Stanley Street plays host to the Young Designers Market on the first Sunday of every month from 10am to 4pm. Everything at this market is handmade by the stall holders. For many of these creative entrepreneurs, showing at the market is the first step towards the commercialisation of their designs so you will also be helping a talented up-and-comer get a head start in the industry. Chatting to the creators is one of the pleasures of shopping at this colourful market. WHERE TO EAT South Bank has a dazzling selection of restaurants and cafés, many of which capitalise on Queensland’s love of outdoor dining. South Bank Surf Club overlooks the famous swimming

lagoon and gives an inner-city twist to the traditional Aussie surf club. It is a great spot for a drink and a bite to eat on a sunny afternoon. Alongside the river there is River Quay, a collection of sleek dining options ranging from champagne breakfasts at River Quay Fish to rustic Italian share plates at Popolo and the steakhouse sophistication of Stokehouse Q. Fresh seafood, home-style favourites and an Indonesian influence can be found at The Jetty, while Francophiles will appreciate Aquitaine Brasserie, a charming alfresco diner offering a delicious taste of France with classic dishes such as Marseille bouillabaisse. Nearby Grey Street offers an equally impressive choice of dining options. The vibe here tends to be more lively, especially at Olé, a Spanish restaurant with a dedicated sangria bar. Share plates are a feature here making this a great spot to visit with colleagues or friends. Brisbane Lookout views.

MARVELLOUS MT COOT-THA

By Kerry Heaney

AT 287 METRES above sea level,

Mt Coot-tha might be little more than a large hill, but it’s the best place to see Brisbane, from the suburbs to the ocean. Reach Brisbane Lookout by driving from the inner city on Milton Road and the winding Sir Samuel Griffith Drive. From the viewing platform, you’ll see why people have been heading up the mountain to enjoy the panorama both day and night for more than 180 years. At the lookout, take in the view with a coffee or snack from Kuta Café or indulge with fine dining at the Summit Restaurant.

The Summit Restaurant building was redeveloped in the 1980s incorporating the second Federation-style kiosk built in 1918. Today, the Summit Restaurant is an award-winning venue with a menu that focuses on quality Queensland produce, and stunning vistas. Mt Coot-tha has many different picnic spots located along the road, but J.C. Slaughter Falls at the base of the mountain is one of the most popular. Along with plenty of barbecues and picnic tables, it has a burbling creek meandering through the middle. Mined for gold between 1890 and 1950, during the war years Mt Coot-tha was a

military base and explosives depot. You’ll find reminders of this history on the walking trails that criss-cross the slopes. The western side is popular with mountain bike riders while those walking tracks are a training ground for adventurers. At the base of the mountain is the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, 56 hectares of landscaped subtropical greenery, open every day from 8am to 5pm. Entry is free and there are also free guided walks Monday through Saturday at 11am and 1pm which leave from the Information Desk. A good place to relax with refreshments is the Botanical Café. Open daily from 9am to 4pm on weekdays and 8am to 5pm on weekends, it’s located near an entrance to the gardens and has a covered deck overlooking a picturesque lake. As you stroll along the winding garden paths, you’ll discover a Japanese Garden, Bonsai House, Fern House, areas of exotic rainforest, a lagoon and bamboo grove and dedicated activities for children. The Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium was named after the Governor of the New South Wales colony who arrived in 1821 and charted an unknown southern sky. The centre’s optical star projector creates a replica night sky, and regular shows are a feature. Mt Coot-tha is a 20-minute drive by car from Brisbane’s CBD and can also be accessed by bus.

Head out from the city and discover these fantastic destinations. By Tiana Templeman

Main: Tangalooma Wrecks. Top right: Montville. Photos: Tourism and Events Queensland.

DISCOVER REGIONAL PRODUCE, vineyards and wineries, cute

boutiques and stunning views, all just a few hours drive from Brisbane. Here are three of our favourite spots for a day trip. MORETON ISLAND It’s hard to believe this natural wonderland is just 75 minutes from Brisbane, with the ferry terminal located just 10 minutes from Brisbane Airport by taxi. Moreton Island is home to the world’s highest coastal dune, Mount Tempest, which offers stunning views of the surrounding area, but most people come here to feed the wild dolphins which have been visiting the Tangalooma Island Resort jetty since the 1970s. If you would like to swim with some underwater wonders, there is a snorkelling tour of the Tangalooma Wrecks dive and snorkel site, home to stingrays, wobbegong sharks and a kaleidoscope of colourful tropical fish. If you would prefer to stay dry, a Segway tour offers a unique way to enjoy Moreton Island’s pristine surrounds. THE BLACKHALL RANGES High on the Blackhall Ranges you’ll find Maleny and Montville, two pretty rural communities with an artistic heritage and a stunning ridge-top location. Montville is a popular tourist hub where galleries line the street, sitting side by side with quaint gift shops and cafés serving Devonshire tea. A picturesque 10-minute drive away you’ll find Maleny, a laid-back country

town with a friendly, community vibe and excellent cooking schools. Hone your wok skills with a Stir Crazy session, cook Thai-inspired Dude Food or whip up tasty yum cha treats at a Dim Sum and Then Some class at the Spirit House. Spicers Tamarind offers classes ranging from French and Italian to bread making and delectable desserts. Nearby you’ll find Spa Anise where romantics can enjoy a private steam and spa overlooking rolling green hills prior to their treatment. NOOSA Noosa has always been known for its natural beauty and there are many ways to enjoy it. Go for a walk in the National Park or explore the Noosa Biosphere Reserve, a series of freshwater tidal parklands covering 150,000 hectares. Noosa Everglades Discovery run serene boat tours which glide through dark tannin-stained water that acts like a mirror, reflecting the beauty of the surrounding bush. Hastings Street is a top spot for shopping with an impressive choice of boutiques and homeware stores. If you feel like a coffee or a glass of wine, drop into Aromas Noosa where wicker chairs face outwards in classic European style and everyone comes to see and be seen. If you are after something more low key, million dollar views can be yours for the price of a drink at the Noosa Heads Surf Club. There is no better spot for a beer on a lazy Sunday afternoon and the chicken parmigiana is a delicious blast from the past. wheretraveler.com I NOVEMBER 2017 I BRISBANE WHERE 19

A little further down the river at 71 Eagle Street, Riparian Plaza’s open promenade and plaza area features some of Brisbane City’s most popular waterside dining experiences, including Kingsleys Steak and Crabhouse, Riverbar & Kitchen and modern Asian delicacies at Madame Wu.

DINING RIVERFRONT, BRISBANE Right: Saké Restaurant & Bar: nori crisps, tuna, kingfish, green onion, togarashi and sesame.

The Riverside Centre at 123 Eagle Street is home to Jellyfish, Friday’s, Pig ’N’ Whistle, Groove Train, Blackbird Bar & Grill and Navala Churrascaria. Friday’s on Eagle Street facing the river boasts a large outdoor riverfront terrace fronting a huge island bar and is a popular spot late in the evening until the early morning. The Waterline Restaurant has an extensive wine list and offers modern Australian cuisine. The Terrace Grill is open for lunch and dinner, with plump juicy char-grilled steaks, seafood and innovative modern Australian cuisine. Closer to the Story Bridge, Customs House, with its grand colonnades, portico, and copper-sheathed dome, is a fine example of Victorian Free Classical style architecture, and also boasts expansive river views. Customs House Restaurant is open for both lunch and dinner. It is especially appropriate for a leisurely Sunday breakfast available on the riverside terrace from 9am.

Further afield in Toowong, the Regatta Hotel is known as the Grand Lady of the Brisbane River. Established in 1874, it has survived fire and flood and now boasts the Boatshed Restaurant, the Street Café, the Main Bar and the Courtyard. Executive chef Daniel Fleming

has designed menus which provide an innovative, broad range of dishes using fresh, seasonal produce. The choices are many but the river links them all, its banks winding through the city and creating vistas to delight diners both night and day.

PONY Standing proud on the lively riverfront, Pony Dining offers modern Australian cuisine with premier waterfront dining, leading event solutions, an iconic bar and a spacious terrace, boasting unrivalled views of the Story Bridge. A lasting impression starts with the fragrance of wood smoke and spirited chefs around a custom made Argentinean wood-fire grill serving an honest, uncomplicated and flavour driven menu. The seafood and meat are sourced from reputable suppliers within Australia. The quality cuts of meat are prepared over the wood-fired grill. Pony Dining offers seafood and pasta dishes that are thoughtfully created with seasonality in mind. The menu also features dishes designed for sharing as well as innovative vegetarian options. LES CLEFS D’OR BRISBANE

LES CLEFS D’OR By Pericles Yiannakis

CHIEF CONCIERGE, SOFITEL BRISBANE CENTRAL

Streets Beach, South Bank Parklands. Photo: Tourism and Events Queensland.

LES CLEFS D’OR WELCOMES you to Queensland—The Sunshine State! Summer is almost here! November sees Brisbane warming up, which means the days become more humid, and with that humidity come afternoon thunderstorms, so remember to bring your ponchos and umbrellas when you go out!

■ There are some great activities for families in Brisbane to take advantage of the warmer weather. Jump on the City Hopper—the free ferry from the Eagle Street Pier terminal—and take a short trip to Riverlife Adventure Centre, where you can hire a bike, go rock climbing, kayak along the Brisbane River or take a segway tour along the river boardwalk. The City Hopper operates from 6am through to midnight seven days a week and comes via the Eagle Street Pier terminal every 30 minutes. It travels along the Brisbane River, stopping at North Quay, South Bank 3, Maritime Museum, Thornton Street, Eagle Street Pier, Holman Street, Dockside and Sydney Street terminals. ■ While you’re in South Bank, don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Lyric

Theatre at QPAC. From 4 November “The Wizard of Oz” is showing! Tickets are on sale now from qpac.com.au ■ If the weather gets too hot for you, take a dip at Streets Beach, the man-made beach at South Bank Parklands, and enjoy the Collective Markets on the weekend. ■ Keeping close to the city, Victoria Park Golf Complex offers a great day out for the whole family. The golf course offers sweeping views of the CBD while you enjoy a casual round of golf or a heated round of mini golf with the family. For all you dog lovers, on 4 and 5 November the Brisbane Showgrounds Royal International Convention Centre will be overtaken with all things poochy, with activities designed for dog lovers and owners alike. ■ Should you approach your concierge desk and be greeted by a member of Les Clefs d’Or, you will instantly recognise the golden keys worn on their lapels. This is a symbol that you will receive only the best advice for your stay. Members of Les Clefs d’Or are well networked not only in their city, but around the world,

and can help you with any request, no matter how big or small. I encourage you to have a conversation with them and pick their brains; I promise you will not be left unimpressed.
