The Atlanta History Center’s cyclorama, which chronicles an important Union victory in the Civil War, is rife with its own history; it stood in Grant Park for more than a century. With a new home and new coat of paint, it’s Daniel Beaird being introduced to a new generation.

erceptions, memory and interpretations can be shaped, or misshaped, by a combination of art and entertainment, myth and memory, cultural context and current events. The Atlanta History Center’s “Cyclorama: The Big Picture,” which opened in February of this year, aims to prove this. The new multimedia experience features the fully restored, 133-year-old cyclorama painting of “The Battle of Atlanta,”and includes a 12-minute audio/visual presentation on a viewing platform. One of only two cycloramas in the United States, “The Big Picture,” which chronicles Union Gen. William T. Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign to take the Confederate rail and supply center—an important Union victory in the Civil War and a turning point in U.S. history—stands 49 feet tall, 371 feet long and weighs 10,000 pounds. Painted in 1886 by 17 German and Austrian artists led by Friedrich Wilhelm Heine in Milwaukee, and debuting in Minneapolis, it depicted the battle as a heroic Union victory, appealing to Northern audiences. However, it was relocated to Atlan-

ta under a new owner, Paul Atkinson, in 1892, and was modified and promoted as “the only Confederate victory ever painted” to appeal to its new Southern audiences. It was repainted in the 1930s to once again show a Union victory, returning the figures to their original appearance. “These shifting viewpoints are precisely what make ‘The Battle of Atlanta’ cyclorama such a distinctive and important artifact,” says Dr. Gordon Jones, senior military historian of the Atlanta History Center. “No other object can so vividly tell the story of how attitudes toward the Civil War have been shaped and reshaped over the past 150 years. In fact, it is the largest single artifact in existence to demonstrate the power of the use—and misuse—of historical memory.” Photography, art, movies, marketing and media all provoke emotions, and have the ability to produce biased, or incomplete, ideas about historical events. They do not always provide the full perspective. The Atlanta History Center’s display is designed to change that. “Facts do not change, but how we

Where Now

understand and view the past varies widely,” says Sheffield Hale, The Center’s president. “We are challenging visitors to explore their own perceptions and misperceptions of history.” Viewers are encouraged to think critically about how art, entertainment and popular culture influence their interpretations of history. In 2014, the Atlanta History Center signed a 75-year license agreement with the City of Atlanta for the restoration, conservation and relocation of the cyclorama painting from its former Grant Park location to the Atlanta History Center’s campus in Buckhead. It raised $35.8 million, seeded by a lead legacy gift of $10 million from Atlantans Lloyd and Mary Ann Whitaker, to ensure the ongoing care and safe-keeping of the painting and related objects over the term. It’s now housed in a 25,000-square-foot, custom-built cyclorama building named after the Whitakers. The conservation and transfer of Atlanta’s largest painting was orchestrated by a team of Atlanta History Center staff and international experts. The team’s two-year process included strength-testing the canvas, documenting the current condition of the paint layers and fiberglass backing, and conducting stabilization conservation efforts

needed prior to moving the painting. Cycloramas were the virtual reality of their time. But the “Battle of Atlanta” cyclorama has evolved into a significant artifact with its own fascinating story. Now, its historical journey is part of the big picture. In the 127 years that it has been on display in Atlanta, it has been the subject of periodic interpretation. At times, it was seen as a proud symbol of the capital of the New South rising from the ashes left by Gen. Sherman. It has also been criticized as an anachronism meant to glorify the “Lost Cause” of the Confederacy. “History is messy,” Hale says “and it has a lot to teach us if we let it. What makes ‘Cyclorama: The Big Picture’ so cool is the surprise factor of the painting’s history, the how and why it was created, and its various interpretations over time.” The 1886 painting was a visual story depicting the Battle of Atlanta, but over time it has evolved into an artifact with its own fascinating story. “Cyclorama: The Big Picture” is designed to offer a 360-degree perspective of our history through the lens of Atlanta’s largest painting. To learn more about the timed experience and purchase tickets, visit www.AtlantaHistoryCenter. com or call 404.814.4033.

THE GREAT CHASE Tied into the Atlanta History Center’s Civil War motif is the steam Texas Locomotive. One of only two surviving Western & Atlantic locomotives, and a participant in the Civil War’s 1862 Great Locomotive Chase, the train was a fellow occupant at the old Cyclorama building in Atlanta’s Grant Park until 2014. It is the centerpiece of the Atlanta History Center’s “Locomotion: Railroads and the Making of Atlanta” exhibit, which captures Atlanta’s beginning in 1837. At the time when a stake marked the end point of the Western & Atlantic Railroad, and what grew up around it was called Terminus, before being renamed Marthasville and later Atlanta. Other aspects of the exhibit chronicle the experience of working on the railroad and riding aboard trains as told through oral history recordings, signs and other historic objects, as well as displays on the science and mechanics of a steam locomotive. CSX is a major sponsor for the “Locomotion: Railroads and the Making of Atlanta” exhibit, and the Gary W. Rollins Foundation provided major funding for the new gallery.
