tlanta is full of surprises. It’s a city that is so diverse and spread out that it can be hard to keep up with everything that’s going on, so we’re taking you on trip off the beaten path. For entertainment, our Calendar has the big acts in the big arenas. However, if you’re looking for something different, we have the lowdown on some cool venues, be it for improv, music, variety acts or burlesque. The Laughing Skull Lounge even hosts “Jokin’ Off,” a one-liner competition that pits comedians against each other, and the audience gets to decide who makes the cut. It’s pure fun without the extravagant productions and price tags. There’s no dearth of food choices in Atlanta. But if you’re ready to sink your teeth into some truly unique fare, we have four cuisines to tickle your taste buds. Aziza serves non-traditional, high-end Israeli food, Snackboxe specializes in Laotian fare, while Virgil’s offers Gullah-inspired soul food, drawing from Gullah Geechee people—African Americans who descended from West and Central Africans—living in the Lowcountry region that spans South Carolina to Northern Florida. VILLAGE THEATRE

The folks at Village Theatre have been making Atlantans laugh since 2008. They have a full slate of sketch and improv comedy shows, all at affordable admission prices ranging from $5 to $10. If you’re unsure of where to start, try their Saturday evening show, “Improv A-Hole.” It’s part improv show, part audience (and cast) drinking game—and rip-roaring fun. 349 DECATUR ST. VENKMAN’S

Venkman’s keeps Old Fourth Ward rocking with nearly nightly performances. Not your typical music venue, Venkman’s is also a full-service restaurant and bar. Here you can chow down on pub grub—the pulled pork tacos and the hanger steak with chimichurri are must-orders— while tapping your toes to a variety of musical fare. Some nights it’s jazz, some nights it’s Motown, and on others it’s rock and roll. All the performances have to be approved by Nicholas Niespodziani and Peter Olson of

the popular band Yacht Rock Revue, so you can trust that it will be a good time. There’s fun to be had for the children, too: on Saturday mornings they have Princess Brunch, during which they screen Disney movies. RED LIGHT CAFÉ To find Red Light Café you’ll need to head off the beaten path to Amsterdam Walk, which

It’s easy to be entertained here, with the variety of options ranging from bluegrass to rock. There are even comedy shows. Most unusual of the offerings, though, are the burlesque performances. The second Tuesday of the month is “Tease Tuesday” and includes sultry dancing and surprises from special guests that include

SMITH’S OLDE BAR

Smith’s Olde Bar, in Piedmont Heights, is an Atlanta institution known for hosting big musical acts. Lesser known, though, is the 1 AM Secret Comedy Show.

Well, the secret’s out now! The brainchild of local comedian David Perdue, every Saturday sees different comedians take the stage to entertain the late-night crowd. Big-name guests, like Marc Maron and Margaret Cho (pictured), have been known to stop by, so you know never know who you’re going to see. Wind through the bustling Midtown location of the Vortex and you’ll find the Laughing Skull Lounge. The intimate club is host to stand-up comedians including local and visiting talent. Their recurring show “Best of Atlanta” highlights 10 local comedians doing their best 10 minutes of material. More of an early bird? Catch “Jokin’ Off ” on the first Saturday of the month at 5 p.m. The one-liner tournament

FOUND STAGES

There are plenty of theaters in Atlanta, but Found Stages changes the game. Instead of catching a play in a traditional

theater, the nonprofit performs in various spaces throughout the city. In the summer and fall (through October), you can catch a playwright reading their new play at the Dunwoody Nature Center. The afternoon begins with a wine and appetizer reception, where attendees can mingle with the playwright before immersing themselves in the story. LAOTIAN: SNACKBOXE BISTRO Snackboxe Bistro opened its doors on Buford Highway in 2018, bringing Laotian food to greater prominence in Atlanta. You may not realize it, but if you’ve been to a Thai restaurant, then you’re already familiar with Laotian food. Laos shares borders with Vietnam and Thailand, so there are similarities found in the flavors and ingredients. SOUTH AFRICAN: 10 DEGREES SOUTH Long before South Africa became the “it” destination, the Anthony family was introducing Atlantans to South African cuisine at 10 Degrees South. The Buckhead restaurant opened in 1998 as the joint creation of Diane (the executive chef ) and Derek Anthony, and their son Justin. Grab a seat and order one of Diane’s takes on classic South African dishes such as the crispy spring rolls filled with bobotie (ground beef curry) and served with a chutney, or the grilled Cornish hen marinated in peri-peri sauce (a spicy, zesty sauce made with African bird’s eye chili

GULLAH GEECHEE: VIRGIL’S GULLAH KITCHEN AND BAR Couple Juan and Gee Smalls opened Virgil’s in College Park in June. The restaurant serves Gullah-inspired soul food along with a full bar offering cocktails, beer, and wine. For the uninitiated, Gullah Geechee people are African Americans living in the Lowcountry region spanning South Carolina to Northern Florida who descended from West and Central Africans.
