Holiday Traditions in Atlanta The Fox Theatre's landmark marquee is a beacon in Midtown. While big names go up in lights throughout the year, the real star of any show is the ornate theater's remarkable comeback story. Without a doubt, any visit to the fabulous Fox is a special occasion, but holiday traditions and decor make December its most magical month. 90 MINUTES IN:
than 20 years before a new rendition is unveiled in 2018. Change can be bittersweet, but offers a fresh vantage point. In 2018, the Fox is also adding The Marquee Club, a 10,000-square-foot space for patrons (per-event access available). The club will offer exclusive guest services, plush seating and a rooftop terrace overlooking the iconic marquee and Peachtree Street— sure to be a new favorite.

Ask the Expert YOUR CONCIERGE
Jonathan DiMarco
Manager in Training, Four Seasons Hotel Atlanta Q: What's your favorite holiday tradition? A: Seeing the lights at the Atlanta Botanical Garden. The trees are lit up, carolers are usually there, [there are] amazing crafted cocktails and fire pits where you can roast s’mores. It can be romantic and great for families. Anyone can enjoy it. Q: Where is the best place to buy boots? A: Cobbler Union at Ponce City Market. They have stunning handcrafted shoes like nothing you’ve ever seen before. Q: What's an attraction for book lovers? A: The Jimmy Carter Presidential Library. Not many cities have a presidential library and it’s so close to Midtown. What most people don’t realize is that they host weekly and biweekly events, from book signings to visits from Jimmy Carter himself. Q: What Atlanta restaurants feature their own fireplaces to warm up patrons on a cold day? A: My choice is Red Phone Booth. It’s really a hidden gem because you have to have the password to go through the actual red phone booth located Downtown. Talk to the concierge to get the code. Q: What local social media accounts do you follow? A: @whereatlanta, of course! But I also love @atl_bucketlist. They post daily [on Instagram] and are always covering new restaurants and places.

Good things take time—just ask Brian Preston, a former home builder and founder of Lamon Luther. “When we started our company 6 years ago, I thought we would just be creating transitional employment for a few homeless guys,” he says. “Today, most of our employees have been with us for over 4 years now, and they are rebuilding their lives right before our eyes. It’s more than a company; it’s a family.” There is a tear-jerking video online of a TEDxAtlanta presentation that Preston gave in 2012 where he shares the story of how he launched his missionalfocused business after experimenting with Pinterest projects for his wife. Since then, Lamon Luther’s chic, reclaimed-wood homewares have spread like wildfire. Crowds gather around the tables inside popular locales including Krog Street Market, Ladybird Grove & Mess Hall, Muss & Turner’s, DAS BBQ, Georgia Tech’s campus and the Atlanta United Training Facility. However, Preston’s personal favorite project to date was creating tables for the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium. “To see our employees take such pride in creating a piece of furniture [where] hundreds of thousands of people will be having a meal, a beer and most importantly, a great time is very rewarding,” Preston says. “Our employees had to overcome some challenges during this project and seeing them come together to achieve a goal was fantastic.” Where will you find Lamon Luther next? “We are doing some fun projects for great companies, but I’m most excited to be launching our own dining collection online,” Preston says. “We are also launching a new office collection on Amazon.” www.lamonluther.com
The largest free, temporary art exhibition in the South, Art on the BeltLine showcases the work of hundreds of visual artists, performers and musicians— both local and international—along almost 20 in-town communities via the Atlanta BeltLine corridor. To see the 20-plus, installations (such as Matthew Duffy’s Polygon Heart Sculpture) on the recently completed stretch known as the Westside Trail, begin at Washington Park and walk south to Adair Park. Whether a whimsical surprise from Tiny Doors ATL (hint: look closely where the trails crosses Lucile Avenue) or a found-object sculpture made from railroad spikes, a stroll along the trail illustrates how the Atlanta BeltLine is transforming the fabric of the city’s tapestry. Find a map of where to find each work via their website. www.art.beltline.org

With a mural seen while driving on the Downtown Connector, live art installations during music festivals like Shaky Knees and Shaky Beats, and even the exterior of a home colorfully covered with his “LOUD” cartoon-ish characters—just to name a few—Greg Mike’s artwork is a force to be reckoned with. His work is inspired by anything from ‘90s skateboard graphics and the graffiti scene, to his travels and experiences bringing international artists to Atlanta to collaborate with local talent through the OuterSpace Project and his own ABV Agency + Gallery on Sweet Auburn Avenue. “We are not a NY or LA, so it’s our duty as artists and collectors to support the arts if we want to make an impact and push ATL to new heights.” Luckily for Atlanta, that’s just what his larger-than-life works do. www.gregmike.com 9
CUISINE SCENE
A Feast for the Senses At Rose + Rye, artfully arranged plates, like the seared tuna pictured here, taste as good as they look. However, this restaurant has a bigger story to tell than its menu.
DINNER IN A CASTLE? Yes, please. The recent opening of Rose + Rye adds another page to the storied past of The Castle, the romantic Midtown mansion. Dating back to 1910, The Castle was one of the first mansions in then rural Ansley Park. Before it was an arts venue for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, it was home to members of the Bohemian arts community (including writer Pat Conroy) who often paid their rent with works of art. Inside, stairs lead to the second floor, revealing an open kitchen, chandeliers and floors restored from original materials, while a patio lined with original columns offers views of the neighboring Woodruff Arts Center. The Castle, 87 15th St. NE., Midtown, 404.500.5980. www.roserye.com 10 W H E R E AT L A N TA I D E C E M B E R 2017
The building that houses Rose + Rye isn’t the only thing that makes this restaurant stand out from the crowd. The all-female executive leadership team is comprised of seasoned industry veterans, including executive chef Lindsay Owens (formerly of The Lynhall, Tilia, Unideli in Minneapolis, Minnesota) and sous chef Anu Adebara alongside General Manager Jessica Schilling (formerly STK Atlanta), Assistant General Manager Seewai Sayavong (formerly The Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay, Nan Thai Fine Dining, Tuk Tuk Thai Food Loft ) and pastry chef Charity Everett (Revel Pastry Company, 1KEPT Atlanta and Charleston). Rooted in seasonality, the menu serves familiar American dishes with refined flare, while conversation-starting cocktails nod to an artistic sensibility. The building itself may be enough reason to visit, but the dramatic interiors and attention to detail will likely leave you dreaming about coming back. Dining Room at Rose + Rye

COLONY SQUARE GOES FULL CIRCLE
From its inception in 1968, Colony Square has attracted guests who desired an urban lifestyle. Located at the corner of 14th and Peachtree Streets, it was Midtown’s original mixed-use destination—a place where coworkers, business partners, friends and families merged. Yet, the design was focused inward, turning its back on the street. As Midtown exploded with growth, Colony Square was overshadowed. Now, a plan is in the works to reimagine a one-of-a-kind destination for dining, shopping and entertainment in the heart of Midtown.
series. Of course, there’s also planning for upcoming festivals. In fact, her team is already preparing for the 50th anniversary fest in 2020—always striving towards safe and inclusive events where all feel welcome. www.atlantapride.org For more information wheretraveler.com
Something’s Happening Here Helmed by North American Properties (NAP), the developers of nearby Atlantic Station and Alpharetta’s Avalon, the reimagined Colony Square will include a food hall called Main & Main, an outdoor gathering space called “The Grove” and much more. According to NAP’s managing partner and Midtown resident Mark Toro, the area has become the most desirable urban experience in the Southeast, as home to world-class companies, cultural attractions, public transit, top colleges and noteworthy architecture. While an official groundbreaking was held earlier this fall, NAP acquired Colony Square 2 years ago and began shifting its focus outward. Large, playful letters spelling “MIDTOWN” make for a colorful photo op. A hip WeWork coworking office opened. Local yoga studios have hosted free classes outside. While businesses inside closed to prepare for renovation, local artists were invited to use the vacant spaces as working studios. “We live in a very exciting time, where we are afforded the opportunity to innovate and reinvent ourselves, challenging long-established norms,” Toro says. In fact, he journeyed with acclaimed restaurateur Steve Palmer around the U.S. to 20 world-class food halls to curate a distinctive concept with a merchandise mix that’s right for Midtown. “While our team is constantly seeking to assure that we’re delivering ‘what’s next’ to the communities we serve, we always return to our purpose: developing a better world,” he says. ’Tis the season to give a lot! The ninth annual (1) Atlanta Santa Speedo Run invites the bold to do just that, while wearing little. Held Dec. 9 at 2 pm, runners in swimwear take their mark at Hudson Grille in Midtown. Proceeds support Bert’s Big Adventure, a local nonprofit organization that provides an all-expenses-paid, five-day journey to Walt Disney World for children with chronic and terminal illnesses and their families. Next, fuel up at Atlantic Station's (2) Salata —the fast-casual chain's first Georgia location—with customizable, tossed-to-order salads and wraps made with fresh ingredients. Want more outdoors? Stroll along the (3) Atlanta BeltLine's Eastside or new Westside Trail. Thanks to curated installations from Art on the BeltLine, you never know what curiosities you may see next.
Walk hand in hand through the Tunnel of Light, Radiant Rainforest, Glittering Galaxy and more at (1) Atlanta Botanical Garden's "Garden Lights, Holiday Nights." The seventh annual electrical extravaganza is on display through Jan. 7. Prefer to escape the city's hustle and bustle? About an hour drive from Downtown Atlanta, the serene (2) Château Élan Winery and Resort may have your answer. To really spoil your special someone, toast the start of 2018 by booking the resort's New Year's Eve Gala Package. Prefer to be in the center of it all? Reynoldstown's new (3) Golden Eagle is ideal for a party of two. Cozy up in the moody restaurant with glowing custom lighting, low-slung crushed velvet seating and classic cocktails from the large Ushaped bar with an antique Art Deco backbar.

Family Friendly Ready to kid around? "Skate the Sky" on (1) The Roof at Ponce City Market . Twist and twirl
across 3,500 square feet of ice while enjoying skyline views, then warm up with snacks and hot toddies from Skyline Park. An admission cost of $15 per person includes skate rental and 50 minutes of skating. Next, head north to (2) Lanier Islands for the lakeside resort's 25th anniversary of "Magical Nights of Lights." After a 7-mile-long driving tour through twinkling lights and dazzling displays, visit with Santa, shop for ornaments and roast marshmallows over a roaring bonfire at the Holiday Village. Round out the weekend at (3) Woodruff Arts Center, where Sunday is for families. Little ones can play, learn and create with free activities every Sunday from 1-4 pm. Save your spot at www.woodruffcenter.org.
