Essential Atlanta Whether it's your first visit (welcome!) or have lived here most of your life (me too!), there may not be a hotter time to be in the city than the month of July. Literally. Still, the scorching temps can only slow down this booming metropolis so much. Atlanta rose from the ashes, after all. 90 MINUTES IN: Local kombucha, beer or gelato—and you can get to it all by bike or foot. What more could a gal want? This trifecta of refreshment is found at Lee + White, located conveniently along the Atlanta BeltLine's Westside Trail. The combined industrial buildings that comprise Lee + White once served as a centralized railroad transportation hub, and are now being transformed into a dining district—home to some of
Lee + White the city's favorite brands, with more on the way. While you're there, treat yourself to an ice-cream sandwich at Honeysuckle Gelato, sip on suds from Monday Night Garage or sample something different at Cultured South (see page 9). On second thought, I wouldn't mind a bookstore to linger awhile longer. (For some locally grown, summer reading inspiration, flip to page 12.) Happy summer, y'all!

Jim Ledford Concierge, Mandarin Oriental Atlanta
Q: Where would you recommend going for a cool summer cocktail? A: What used to be a scooter shop on Ponce de Leon Avenue next to the Atlanta BeltLine is now 8ARM. It is a drink bar and cafĂŠ serving adult beverages, coffee and light bites. Speaking of the Atlanta Beltline, check out Golden Eagle in Reynoldstown. Once an old train depot, it's now a midcentury decorated restaurant that serves an updated twist on classic cocktails.
(TOP TO BOTTOM) MANDARIN ORIENTAL ATLANTA; ATLANTIC STATION
Q: Which park do you go to for a picnic? A: I have to pitch my neighborhood of Grant Park for picnicing. Even though the Boulevard side of the park is going through a renovation, do not let it stop you from noshing under the established tree canopied grounds and paths. Stop in at Grant Park Coffeehouse to grab a coffee and danish before or afterward. Q: Where's one of your favorite places to pick up some ice cream? A: I really enjoy Morelli's Gourmet Ice Cream on Moreland Avenue. They create truly delicious blends of ice cream featured on a rotating roster. They also offer nondairy for those that are lactose intolerant and a vegan flavor. When in the VirginiaHighland neighborhood, visit Paolo's Gelato. Paolo's offers double the amount of Baskin Robbins. Not to be forgotten is Kilwin's in Atlantic Station. The wafting smell of the sugar and waffle cones draw you in.

In recent years, contemporary riffs on classic Tiki drinks have taken craft cocktail bars by storm—but it all started at Trader Vic’s. In 1934 Vic “The Trader” Bergeron built a cozy little saloon in California called Hinky Dinks. After refining his skills as a bartender and learning about rums from around the world, Vic began serving simmering plates of island-style cuisine, and Trader Vic’s became one of America’s first fusion restaurant concepts. Books to Devour It’s no secret the city’s culinary scene is on fire. From local chefs who are really spicing things up, this season’s hot cookbooks have earned a place in the kitchen and on the coffee table.

‘Turnip Greens & Tortillas: A Mexican Chef Spices Up the Southern Kitchen’ James Beard Award-recognized chef Eddie Hernandez is no flash-inthe-pan celebrity restauranteur. His much-anticipated cookbook was released in April, but it’s not too late to claim your own copy. Considering his fast-casual Taqueria del Sol eateries have been an Atlanta staple for decades, these recipes— like Memphis Barbecue Pork Tacos or Turnip Greens in “pot likker” with chiles—are bound to have a long shelf life. The cookbook is available via Amazon, Barnes and Noble and Indie Bound. www.taqueriadelsol.com
'The New Southern Latino Table: Recipes That Bring Together the Bold and Beloved Flavors of Latin America and the American South' Creatively marrying the diverse and delicious cuisines of more than 20 Latin American countries with the beloved food of the American South, bicultural cook, food personality, journalist and food historian Sandra Gutierrez blends ingredients, traditions and culinary techniques in an inspiring, new way. Want second helpings? Catch her in conversation with fellow Atlanta-based cookbook author Virginia Willis at the Atlanta History Center on July 17 at 7 pm. Admission is $10, $5 members, and free to AHC Insiders (unless otherwise noted). Reservations are required; call or purchase tickets online. 404.814.4150, www.atlantahistorycenter.com
‘SOUL: A Culinary Evolution in 150 Recipes’ Think you know “soul food”? This critcally acclaimed cookbook from Chef Todd Richards might make you think again. With chapters organized by ingredients such as collards, corn, tomatoes, melons, berries, beans and rice, roots and more—each begins with a traditional recipe and progresses with Richards’ (another James Beard Award nominee) perspective of flavor combinations and techniques. Want to try before you buy? Head to Richards’ Southern Fried stall inside Inman Park’s Krog Street Market for a bite of his famed chicken. www.richardssouthernfried.com
These bookshops not only offer curated collections for browsing, but also regualry host the coolest writers.
A CAPELLA BOOKS If you missed Buckhead’s own Emily Giffin at the Marcus Jewish Community Center of Atlanta last month for the launch of her latest, “All We Ever Wanted,” don’t sweat it. While this is bound to be another blockbuster novel for Giffin, Inman Park’s beloved local bookstore, which helped present the event, can help you get your hands on a copy—as well as can fill your calendar with more author events around town. Highlights include: Alexander Heffner, co-author of “Documentary History of the United States” at the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library on July 10 and Amber Brock, author of “Lady Be Good” for the July 12
installment of Writers at the Wrecking Bar, a popular series at the Little Five Points’ mainstay. In fact, I’m already looking toward to the August event with Amy Bonnaffons, a graduate teaching assistant in Creative Writing at the University of Georgia, and her debut collection of stories titled “The Wrong Heaven.” www.acappellabooks. com, 404.681.5128
POSMAN BOOKS The Ponce City Market location of this familyowned, independent mini-chain may not be large, but it is mighty. Each month, bibliophiles gather a few doors down at City Winery for “Books and Booze” to eat, drink and discuss a chosen read. This month’s event is on July 17 from 7-9 pm and spotlights “Meaty” by Samantha Irby. The progressive bookseller is also known for its Drag Queen Storytime. Curious? Check it out on July 21 when Edie Cheezburger returns from 3-4 pm. Children and adults will laugh, dance and doge zingers. MAPS MAP 3 ATLANTA DOWNTOWN & INTOWN NEIGHBORHOODS
[WHERE INSIDE]
Atlanta Your Way
First-Timer In honor of one of the city's first claims to fame, (1) World of Coca-Cola in the heart of Downtown is a quintessential stop on Atlanta itineraries, especially for history lovers. Now on exhibit is "The Story of Sprite Boy," which acutally has nothing to do with the popular lemon-lime flavored soft drink. Instead, it tells the story of the elfin ambassador of Coca-Cola from the 1940s. Next up, head to the fabulous (2) Fox Theatre in Midtown where you can get a behind-the-scenes tour or a ticket to one of the many events held here. Speaking of Coke, the 2018 Coca-Cola Summer Film Festival kicks off this month on July on 27 with a screening of "Night of the Living Dead" at 10 pm. Cap off a weekend in Atlanta at Sunset Sessions, (3) Park Tavern's free concert series overlooking the city skyline and Piedmont Park. 40 W H E R E AT L A N TA I J U LY 2018
Theatre Fanatic
Healthful
Get ready to laugh. Back by popular demand, "THE BOOK OF MORMON," which played a record breaking two-week return engagement in 2014, as well as in 2016, returns to Atlanta for a limited run, July 17-22 at the Fox Theatre as an option to the Fifth Third Bank (1) Broadway in Atlanta 2017/2018 season. Before or after the performance, head across the street to the historic (2) Georgian Terrace Hotel for a bite at the beautiful Livingston Bar, or a nightcap at Edgar's Proof & Provisions in the basement. Looking for local theatre? Roswell's (3) Georgia Ensemble Theatre presents "Ring of Fire: The Music of Johnny Cash," a concert-version of this hit musical with the Man in Black, outdoors at the Chattahoochee Nature Center July 12-28. Tickets required; table and lawn seating are both available.
Start your week off on the right foot. Located in Midtown's walkable arts-and-culture district, (1) Colony Square hosts Farmer's Market on the Square every Monday from 11 am-2pm with provisions from local farmers.
