Essential Atlanta Whether it's your first visit (welcome!) or have lived here most of your life (me too!), there may not be a better time to stay up late than the month of June. The days stretch longer and the nights heat up with more activities and events so you can enjoy Atlanta around the clock. 90 MINUTES IN: Did you know Atlanta is home to the world’s first 24-hour news network? Located in the heart of Downtown, visitors can get an exclusive, behindthe-scenes look at CNN's heaquarters. Now celebrating its 30th anniversary, the 50-minute, guided studio tour through CNN's headquarters demonstrates how a live broadcast is produced and sent around the world. At the CNN Center, shop souvenirs
CNN Studio Tour from Turner brands like Adult Swim, Turner Classic Movies and Cartoon Network, or grab a bite at one of the fast-casual or full-service restaurants. Bonus: pick up a CityPASS to save 40 percent off admission, plus gain access to four more top attractions (flip to page 26 for details). CityPASS helps you skip most ticket lines, too—which can help in a big way for those making every minute of summer count.

Ask the Expert YOUR CONCIERGE
Elle Smith Corporate Concierge, The Monarch Centre
Q: How do you keep cool in the summer? A: Shopping with friends at Lenox Square or Perimeter Mall. The stores will keep you occupied for hours, and you can find anything and everything you will need or want. Q: Where do you go for an iced coffee? A: My first choice is Caribou Coffee in Buckhead. They have an array of signature iced coffee drinks. Everyone should try the Turtle Mocha on ice. Q: What venues would you recommend for hosting an office’s next big event? A: When it comes to hosting a great office event, you must know the client and their style. For groups looking for team-building activities and high energy, I recommend The Painted Pin, Topgolf or GameX. If the client is looking for something a bit more high-end, I would recommend the ballrooms at Whitley Hotel and InterContinental Buckhead as well as Legendary Events' venues such as Flourish and The Estate. Q: June is your birthday month. What are a few ways to celebrate in the city? A: A great way to celebrate is going to a concert at Chastain Park. That's always a blast. This summer's series will have Harry Connick Jr., Lauryn Hill and many more. "HAMILTON" plays at The Fox Theatre through June 10 and I’m so looking forward to seeing it here. Now that’s a great way to celebrate a June birthday in the city.

WE’LL NEVER CALL
Atlanta “the city that never sleeps” and not just because that title is already taken by another. Our bars close fairly early compared with the rest of the country and we’re not especially known for our 24-hour diners. The only true part of the city that never shuts down is HartsfieldJackson Atlanta International Airport. Still, believe it or not, there is plenty to keep you occupied at all hours of the day and night. You just have to know where to look. Here’s a glimpse into where the locals go after most lights go out. Ready for an all-nighter? LATE-NIGHT DELIGHTS PM—No matter what time of day you arrive in Atlanta, there are a handful of eateries where you can indulge well into the night. This is the home of Waffle House, after all. Meanwhile, Cook Out may not be native to the city, but there are enough locations around town that stay open until 4 and 5 am. Depending on the time of night, you might be standing in line alongside local college students or the postbar crowd. Fill up with a burger, sides of quesadillas and fries, and, of course, a milkshake for a cheap, late-night feast.

set up in the Elevator Factory in Grant Park and stays open until 3 am. You can bring your own alcohol and reserve a room by texting their phone number. Don’t expect to just walk up and get a spot on weekends as reservations are recommended. Karaoke costs $10 per person and a minimum of six guests is required. Flying solo? Head to 10 High under Dark Horse Tavern in Virginia-Highland for Metalsome Karaoke instead. With a live band for back-up, the brave can take the stage until 3 am most nights of the week. First-timers are free (duets are $20). Arrive early to claim your spot, or sing-a-long from the crowd.
Plaza Theatre
REVELERS WELCOME AM—Every city needs a late-night movie theater and the Plaza Theatre in Poncey-Highland is Atlanta’s. First opened in 1939, it screens independent and classic films, including “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.” A screening of cult classic is held every Friday night at midnight, put on by the fan group Lips Down on Dixie. Revelers dress up as their favorite characters and participate in various parts of the $15 show. The theater also hosts special screenings and premieres and has their own cocktail, the Plaza Punch.
12
SING YOUR HEART OUT AM—Still buzzing from your performance at Rocky Horror, end the night at a nearby karaoke bar. Fam-Fam is
2
CATCH THE SUNRISE AM—If you’re still out, or already up, catch the sunrise on the Jackson Street Bridge, which has the best views of Atlanta and technically never “closes.” You likely won’t be the only one there as it’s a popular spot for snapping Instagram shots. If that’s not enough, the Atlanta BeltLine opens at 6 am so you can start your morning off with a walk through the city’s paved rails to trails pathway. Admire the public art that is found on all corners of the Eastside Trail.
6
FUEL UP FOR THE DAY AM—Open 24 hours in a bustling corner of Buckhead, R. Thomas Deluxe Grill is the best place for an early-bird breakfast, open since 1985. Speaking of birds, be sure to greet the parrots and other feathered friends that live outside the restaurant. Grab a seat in the colorful garden patio and order a vegetable quinoa bowl and fruit smoothie for a much-needed detox. Nearby, Arden’s Garden is another great option for a healthful kick-start to the day (try the Oops! or Complete Recovery). The Atlanta-based,
7
Jackson Street Bridge
family-owned juice company dates back to 1995 and now sells its juices in 13 stores as well as supermarkets, coffee and bagel shops, health clubs and more. TOUR THE TOWN AM—During civilized hours, there’s plenty to see around the city. But if you’re short on time, focus on the history and important neighborhoods. Start at the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site to learn about the Atlanta native, then head to Center for Civil and Human Rights in Centennial Olympic Park, which documents both Atlanta’s role in the Civil Rights Movement and modern human rights struggles. From there, join Atlanta Food Walks’ Downtown Southern Food Walk, which weaves regional history and cuisine.
9
Atlanta Food Walks
It ends at Sweet Auburn Market, a formerly segregated market turned historic food hall. FAST-PACED PLAYTIME PM—When you’re ready, head back to the area around the airport to finish your trip. The Delta Flight Museum documents the airline’s history from crop dusting planes to international company. And the Porsche Experience Center is home to the luxury car maker’s North American headquarters, complete with a museum, test track and restaurant overlooking the runways.
3
RELAX AND REJUVENATE PM—There’s plenty to see and do within HartsfieldJackson from the art installations to shopping to the airport outposts of your favorite Atlanta eateries. Don’t miss the award-winning global cuisine and cocktails at One Flew South at Terminal E. Those with access to Delta Sky Club at Terminal E can indulge in a Deepak Chopra-designed treatment at Asanda Spa. Otherwise, check out Xpress Spa at Terminals A and C for massages, manicures and facials before you board.

O
ne of my favorite ways to spend a little free time is a quick trip east— the near east—where good music, savory eats and an eclectic culture blend for what could be an afternoon excursion or an entire weekend’s worth of memories. From a myriad of outdoor adventures that let my nature-loving kids soak up some fresh air, to a bevy of local boutiques that appease the need for retail therapy and plenty of write-home-about menu options to refuel for more fun, the small town of Athens, Georgia is the perfect way to spend a day—whether you’re a bulldog or not. About an hour and a half outside the city, we always leave early enough to hit city limits by breakfast; because there’s never enough time to make the tough decision on where to place our coffee order. At Big City Bread Café, it comes with decadent French toast, or the fresh-baked breakfast bread of the day smothered in homemade jam. At the Heirloom Café and Fresh Market a seasonal menu of fresh and healthy— but certainly larger-than life—options include Love on a Biscuit, two poached eggs on a buttermilk biscuit with buffalo fried chicken and Heirloom sauce, or the Doscuit Holes we order for the table, donut holes made with biscuit dough, topped with cinnamon sugar and bourbon salted caramel. And that’s just the first hour. For me, I fuel up to conquer a day shopping downtown and eating even more, or for a visit to the State Botanical Garden of Georgia where I can snap pictures and my kids can run free. Just outside of town, you can rent a kiwi to float down the Broad River, or visit a myriad of local intown parks with playgrounds, hiking and nature loving options to make idle hours worth keeping open. Plus, if I’m being honest, the stately homes, historic landmarks and winding sidewalks offer pretty good motivation to just spend the day walking around. If you did nothing but eat, shop and play outside, you’d have no regrets, but there’s more. Be it indie, up-and-comer or mainstream, Athens has enough music venues —and industry cred—to ensure the concert options never skip a beat. (Stop for a photo opp at the historic Georgia Theatre.) It’s also got a flair for the arts. If you get a table at The National, you can turn dessert into a paper-bag-popcorn-and-PBR flick at Ciné, the two-theatre boutique movie house showing first-run indie films. Not ready to leave yet? A nightcap of cornhole or salsa dancing at one of the staple nightclubs across the street ensures you leave the city with more than a collegiate souvenir.

Many the Miles
It wouldn’t be summertime without making memories on a road trip. Lucky for us, taking that epic drive just got easier, thanks to Atlanta-based sCAMPer Van. As the Southeast’s first compact camper van rental and concierge service, they provide fully stocked vehicles that were designed with many miles, music festivals and off-the-beaten-path adventures in mind.
w w w.wheretrave ler.c o m
Q&A with sCAMPer Van
After 20 years in the radio and music industry, David Clapper switched gears. With a longtime friend and fellow traveler, he started the journey in 2017 to create a new way to travel.
PHOTO CREDIT (OPPOSITE) SCAMPER GOES HERE VAN; ( THIS PAGE, CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT) SCAMPER VAN; GEORGIA STATE PARKS (2)
Q: What was your inspiration for launching sCAMPer Van? I had just returned from a trip out West with my son and while we were out there, we rented a van very similar to what we have now. We drove it from San Francisco, California to Yosemite to Big Sur and Monterey, cooking, sleeping, driving and living out of the van for several days. We fell in love with the experience. While I was contemplating my next step in my career, I wanted to rent a van like that to join some friends on a surf trip to the Outer Banks, North Carolina and well ... I couldn’t find anything at all. sCAMPer Van was born. Q: How do your vans stand out from other recreational vehicles (RVs) or car rental services in the Southeast? I like to call Scamper Van “glorified car camping” as our vans are not an RV in your traditional
sense. Our vans are compact, easy to drive, low-cost options for people that want to explore. What really makes us special is the customer service and the goodies that come with our vans. We offer anything, from trip planning to grocery shopping and gear rental, from kayaks to mountain bikes and hammocks. And get this: we deliver it to you. Q: What is the longest trip someone has taken so far? We’ve seen our customers head to the Grand Canyon, Cooper-
stown, New York for the The Pro Baseball Hall of Fame and all the way to the tip of Maine. Q: What advice would you give to the first-time sCAMPer? Pack light and be free. Honestly. Our vans are designed to unplug, to get off the grid. They are self contained with power and water so although a campground is nice, try exploring something a little off-the-beaten path. Q: Do you have a favorite place to camp? What a lot of people don’t realize is just how many options are out there for outdoor exploration in our area, from the Appalachian Mountains to the Okefenokee Swamp, from Providence Canyon to Tybee Island. There is so much to see and do. I have a summer surf trip planned in North Carolina, and I always make sure to swing through Brevard and Asheville when I’m nearby. Q: What are people are often surprised to learn about their sCAMPer Van experience? Our vans are small, and I think sometimes people are nervous about the space, but we look at it this way: you are using the van to get outside, the biggest space there is. What people seem to comment the most about is that there was plenty of room for their trip; that they overpacked and didn’t realize that we made sure that they had everything they needed for the trip. Q: How many sCAMPer Vans are currently available? At the moment we only have two vans. However, we have just inked several investors into the business to help us expand the fleet immediately and expect that we will have enough vans to meet demand by mid-summer.

Shopping UNOde50 at Lenox Square The Spanish jewelry brand founded in the late ‘90s built its reputation for unique designs by releasing limited quantities of each piece. Today, UNOde50 continues the tradition, albeit on a larger scale considering its presence in global cities from Toronto to Tokyo, Madrid to Milan, Miami to Moscow, Rome to Paris, and as of last year, Atlanta. Atlanta Your Way
Bon Vivants Have a taste for culinary creativity? Sip on (1) South City Kitchen Buckhead's exclusive Berk-
shire Mountain bourbon, blended in Tablas Creek Vineyard barrels. Best when paired with bites of their signature Southern food, try it before it's gone, or snag a seat at SCK Avalon for a Whiskey & Vine dinner with the master distiller and award-winning winemaker on June 28. If you've tuned into Food Network's "Best Baker in America," you know (2) Four Seasons Hotel Atlanta's Executive Pastry Chef Lasheeda Perry. Her cheerful disposition, constant smile and oh, those desserts are good reasons to make a detour, stat. If it isn't already, add (3) DRAFTS + DOGS to your radar. From the same team behind 18.21 Bitters, the tasty new stall at Ponce City Market serves cool cocktails and craft hot dogs. 40 W H E R E AT L A N TA I J U N E 2018

If all you want to do is have some fun, listen up: Sheryl Crow kicks off (1) Atlanta Botanical Garden's 16th annual Concerts in the Garden series in Midtown on June 6. Throughout the summer, time-honored favorites like Michael McDonald, Mary Chapin Carpenter and, at the Gainesville garden, Boz Scaggs, perform. Speaking of throwback jams, Atlanta's own (2) Human Sounds Records keeps the nostalgic media of cassettes alive with new releases of contemporary bands like Bane's World and VACATIONS. Look for tapes online and at select record stores around town. Outside Midtown's (3) High Museum of Art , a colorful installation by renowned designer Yuri Suzuki called "Sonic Playground" opens this month with sculptures that create sounds in unusual ways for the young and young at heart.
Traveling with kiddos? Discover what the animals at (1) Zoo Atlanta are up to after the sun goes down during a Twilight Trek on June 8 or 23. Little ones can use night-vision scopes to observe and simulate tracking of wildlife on the grounds while learning more about the life of biologists. Or, spend the night at the Zoo on June 9 for an unforgettable NightCrawler adventure. Are there any "Paw Patrol" fans in your crew? Watch them go wild for "Paw Patrol Live! 'The Great Pirate Adventure!' at (2) The Fox Theatre in Midtown—a venue that awes all ages—with performances held June 30-July 1. Meanwhile at Midtown's (3) Center for Puppetry Arts, "Click Clack Moo: Cows that Type" brings barnyard chaos and hilarity based on the award-winning children’s book to the stage from June 12-July 29.
