Q: WHAT DO YOU FIND UNIQUE ABOUT ATLANTA? A: One of the most
unique things about Atlanta is the fact we still have so many trees. Atlantans are falling back in love with nature. The Atlanta Beltline, Path400, Piedmont Park, Chattahoochee Nature Center and the many new green spaces being developed throughout the city make locals and visitors want to enjoy being outside. Q: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE ATTRACTION IN THE CITY? A: The Cyclorama at the
Atlanta History Center is amazing. It is one of only two Cycloramas in the U.S. The other is in Gettysburg. It is a 360-degree depiction of the Battle of Atlanta with a diorama built into it. Q: ANY RECENTLY OPENED RESTAURANTS TO CHECK OUT? A: My newest favorite
dining spot is Casi Cielo. This fine, Mexican dining restaurant is less than a year old and amazing. The menu covers all the bases, from duck
to a rib eye steak. Even a vegetarian option. No burritos here. Salsas are fresh made, as are the tostadas—pressed by hand and heated over a comal in the kitchen. Q: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO COOL OFF IN THE SUMMER? A: It gets so steamy hot
in Atlanta, we all need places and ways to cool off. Grab a gallon of sweet iced tea from Chick-fil-A, except on Sunday, and find a shady spot. How about some ice cream? The Frosty Caboose is a retired and repurposed red Missouri/Pacific caboose from Iowa, located in Chamblee. Dozens of breweries offer shaded patios for tastings and many are also offering food. New Realm, Monday Night Brewing, Hopstix are just a few favorites. EXPERT TIP

DEEPDENE IS ON THE EASTERN END OF OLMSTED LINEAR PARK.
SECRET GARDENS W
e all know about Piedmont Park and the BeltLine, but where do you go when you want a taste of the outdoors without the crowds? Here are three spaces that make it easy to escape the bustle of the city without actually leaving. Lia Picard
Morningside, the upscale neighborhood between Midtown and Druid Hills, has its very own secret garden. The Morningside Nature Preserve features more than 30 acres of wooded forest and nature trails that wind through kudzu and trees. The trail gives way to the beautiful South ForkPeachtree Creek, where there’s a beach and a wooded suspension bridge. Don’t be surprised if you see pups frolicking in the creek—there’s a reason it’s unofficially called Atlanta’s dog beach.
OLMSTED LINEAR PARK Olmsted Linear Park is hiding in plain sight. It sits off Ponce de Leon Avenue between Druid Hills and Decatur, but it
may be easy to overlook. It’s worth a quick detour, though, to wander through the 45-acre greenspace designed in the late 1800s by famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted (who also designed New York’s Central Park and the Biltmore Estate in Asheville). The park is made of six segments, including an oldgrowth forest, connected by paved trails. Each segment has unique elements, such as flower and tree varieties and a waterfall. It’s hard to believe, but this gem was almost lost to a freeway in the 1980s. Thankfully, a grassroots effort prevented that from happening. Need an excuse to go? Each fall and spring is the Festival
on Ponce. The park comes to life with artists selling a variety of crafts, live music and food vendors.
SPRINGVALE PARK Inman Park is one of Atlanta’s hottest neighborhoods, thanks to all the hot dining and retail that’s popped up there in the past five years. Visit the heart of its residential area, though, and you’ll find Springvale Park. The park is divided into two parts by Euclid Avenue. There are paved trails, a playground, and a pond, all of which make a peaceful distraction from the business of city life. It’s further proof that you don’t have to go very far to find a little peace and quiet in the Big Peach.

Atlanta may be known for its great barbecue and burgers, but believe it or not there are plenty of great plant-based options, too! Long summer days that stretch into long summer nights call for relaxing on a patio with a cool refreshment (and maybe some snacks). Whether you want to sit somewhere above the city and take in sweeping views, or stay more grounded, there’s a patio for everyone. Here are our picks for the best patios around Atlanta. Lia Picard Let’s take it from the top. If you’re looking for a view from above, you can’t beat the roof at Hotel Clermont in Poncey-Highland. The boutique hotel opened a year ago and locals and travelers alike haven’t stopped flocking since to its rooftop with AstroTurf and colorful tables. Kick off your shoes, grab a Tiki drink from the bar, and enjoy the panoramic views of Midtown. It’s especially magical at twilight when the sun sinks and the classic neon Hotel Clermont radio tower flickers on. While you’re in the neighborhood, visit The Roof at Ponce City Market. It’s higher, so the views are even more intense, and you can’t beat the carnival games and festive atmosphere. If you get hungry, quell those pangs at Nine Mile Station, where they specialize in snackable items like the meat and cheese board and the mixed grill with hanger steak,
bratwurst, and veggies, as well as craft cocktails. If you want something with less fuss, head to Six Feet Under in Grant Park where you can slurp back oysters while overlooking Oakland Cemetery and the city. Classic patio seekers will delight in the one at Muchacho in Reynoldstown. Ensconced from busy Memorial Drive by plants, the vibe feels more like a tropical oasis. Enjoy their breakfast tacos and an espresso on one of the plush seats for a fantastic start to the day. The BeltLine’s eastside trail runs behind the restaurant, making it super convenient to get your sweat on after. Over in Midtown, Cypress Street Pint and Plate has plenty of space for people looking to soak up the sun while chowing down on pub grub (like those famous sweet potato nachos). Bonus points for offering half-off appetizers on weekdays from 5-7 pm. Some places offer more than just
outdoor seating. For example, The Optimist on the Westside has a darling outdoor situation with picnic table-dotted AstroTurf and a putting green. Similarly, Empire State South in Midtown is a pleasant surprise found in an office-building courtyard. Here, there’s bocce ball and lounge chairs to help you relax, unwind and forget the frenzy of the city.
