pring has sprung! There is no better time to get out and enjoy a walk through Atlanta’s diverse neighborhoods, burn off some calories at a park, enjoy green spaces and stroll through outdoor shopping centers, and get to know this city. Spend some time in the Old Fourth Ward and Midtown. The former boasts the Martin Luther King Jr. historic site and birthplace, in addition to Ebenezer Baptist Church, where MLK was baptized and later preached alongside his father. OFW is also home to Big Bethel AME, the oldest predominantly African-American church in Atlanta. Then, of course, there’s the hottest stop in town: Ponce City Market, which beckons with an eclectic mix of shops, bars and restaurants. The 2.1-million-squarefoot building was once a Sears, Roebuck & Co. distribution center. In Midtown, literature lovers should visit the Margaret Mitchell House, where “Gone With the Wind” was written. The High Museum boasts the area’s best-curated and most coveted exhibits. If it’s green space you’re after, the 182-acre Piedmont Park is considered Atlanta’s Central Park; adjacent is the Atlanta Botanical Garden. Both the Old Fourth Ward and Midtown offer easy access to the Atlanta BeltLine, a popular rail-to-trail favored by walkers, runners, skateboarders and man’s best friend. It’s full of inspiring public art. Find additional ideas on what to do this month in our features on antiques, bookstores, coffee shops and artful spaces. Happy exploring!

One thing I do when I visit any city and can recommend in Atlanta is taking a tour.

CONCIERGE, INTERCONTINENTAL ®BUCKHEAD ATLANTA

Q: WHAT’S A MUST DO IN ATLANTA IN MAY? A: May is one of the best

Q: WHERE SHOULD VISITORS GO TO VIEW ART? A: As the leading art mu-

months of the year in Atlanta, as festivals abound. One of my favorites is the Decatur Arts Festival and I try and go every year. I always see something unique, and the square is easy to get to on MARTA. This month is also chock full of notables such as the Sweet Auburn Festival, Greek Festival, Candler Park Festival and the Atlanta Food and Wine Festival.

seum in the southeastern United States, the High Museum draws in incredible exhibits such as the recent sold-out viewing of “Infinity Mirrors” by Yayoi Kusama. Another lesser known museum is SCAD Fash at SCAD Atlanta. This film and fashion house showcases unique exhibits such as “Gue Pei: Couture Beyond” and fashion icons such as Carolina Herrera and Pierre Cardin. If the weather is nice and you want to enjoy art outside, stroll along the now-famous Atlanta BeltLine. Enjoy 22 miles of revitalized pathways that are constantly being populated with new sculptures and paintings.

Q: WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE ATTRACTION IN THE CITY? A: One of my favorite

things to do when I visit any city and can highly recommend in Atlanta is taking a tour. The Electric Car tour or Segway tour offers a wonderful overview of the city, where you can take in history and anecdotes from knowledgeable guides. As someone who gives out advice daily, it is nice to listen to another point of view, and I always learn something new.

EXPERT TIP

SCAD Fash is adjacent to the Atlanta BeltLine and houses fashion exhibits and films.

ART ON THE BELTLINE

AMELIE’S

Coffee + Contemporary = Cool Cup While spending time in a city teeming with good things to eat, see, do and experience, you may want to seek out a quiet moment. Luckily, two ways to summon the serene—coffee and art—have popped up in abundance around Atlanta. Whether visitor or veteran, start your checklist here. Jennifer Colosimo BeltLine Brews and Beauty Sunny days on the Atlanta BeltLine should start with an espresso from Spiller Park Coffee to fuel a trip through Ponce City Market—that is, if you can resist sitting down to indulge in its full menu of imported coffees, specialty sips and creatively topped toasts. Or, opt for a walk-up wake-me-up at Three Heart Roastery right on the BeltLine behind Paris on Ponce. This outpost serves “post third wave” coffee for the consumer wanting flavors on another level. Art on the Atlanta BeltLine showcases year-round, multi-discipline activations, like the eponymous seasonal exhibition packed with murals, sculptures and avant-garde performance art, as well as its Continuing and Foundational Collection. Other notables? Peruse new Brickworks Gallery and its collection of story-telling art curated by artist Laura W. Adams. People watch from Parish’s rustic coffeehouse patio, host meetings inside Press and Grind’s bright, vibrant atmosphere or unwind with a single origin coffee

prepared at Dancing Goats Coffee Bar’s manual brew bar.

West Midtown Mainstays Nuanced sophistication gets defined at Kai Lin Art. Kai Lin’s exhibitions showcase local and international artists pushing the boundaries of creative and contemporary art through a vast myriad of mediums. The owner’s vibrant energy matches his collection and inspires a sense of community. Art and people coming together. Check East Pole Coffee Co. off your beans bucket list on this side of town. Get a sampling of coffee that is so good, companies all over Atlanta are using it (Butter and Cream and Full Commission are our favorites).

their creative process. The next show begins May 10. Family-owned Grant Park Coffeehouse serves organic and fair trade coffee and homemade sweet treats to complement a trip next door to Zoo Atlanta. Or, hang out with Atlanta’s best techies at hip Octane Coffee or the French-eccentric Amélie’s. This checklist may trump any former plans, and that’s what we’d call an awe-inspiring wake-up call.

Intown Interests Whitespace Gallery offers three ways to experience art inside a renovated 1893 carriage house. Embracing both emerging and established, edgy artists, the gallery’s three spaces inspire regional outreach, cultural crossover and give audiences an intimate look into the individuals and EAST POLE COFFEE CO.
