FOR THOSE

If your stay in the city is a short one, there are still ways to make the most of it. We suggest exploring the sites of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Born in Atlanta, the civil rights leader’s legacy still reverberates in his stomping grounds. Start your experience at the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Park, where you get an up-close look at King’s life and work, and see the International World Peace Rose Garden and Gandhi Statue. The area includes the Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Change, Ebenezer Baptist Church and the home where King was born and raised. All the sites offer free admission; call for individual hours. The Visitor Center has a wealth of information and features exhibits and audiovisuals about King and the civil rights movement. While there, do sign up for the free tour of the yellow, Victorian home on Auburn Avenue where King spent his childhood. Tours fill up quickly. Visit Ebenezer Baptist Church, where King was co-pastor with his father. King delivered some of his most famous sermons at the church pulpit, including “The Drum Major Instinct,” which served as his eulogy just two months later. 450 Auburn Ave., NE, 404.331.5190. www.nps.gov/malu

MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES If you prefer observing art indoors, start with the High Museum of Art in Midtown. One of the biggest museums in the Southeast, the High is an architectural beauty that houses everything from the classics to contemporary art. There are also events for young art enthusiasts, like Baby Book Club on the first Saturday of the month and the weekly Toddler Thursdays. Current exhibits include “Something Over Something Else”: Romare Bearden’s Profile Series, and “Sally Mann: A Thousand Crossings.” Across the street from the High is the Museum of Design Atlanta (MODA). It’s a small but mighty museum that exposes visitors to the cutting edge of design and art. In addition to workshops, the museum hosts regular lectures with professionals and one-off guided tours of the exhibitions. MODA has also teamed up with Ponce City Market to host supper-club experiences that put the creations of immigrant chefs front and center. The final event of the year, Underground Dinner with Chow Club Atlanta, is on Oct. 15.

Apart from the gallery there is an annual artists market that takes place indoors every winter, giving Atlantans a chance to keep warm while searching for their newest collectible. FOX THEATRE

FALL FESTIVAL ON PONCE

Festive Fun for Everyone

Fall in Atlanta means festival season has arrived! It’s time to get outside, eat, party and toast the city. If you’re looking to get a feel for the community, these six festivals will put you in the thick of it. LIA PICARD

CANDLER PARK FALL FESTIVAL

What: On Oct. 5 and 6, Candler Park Fall Festival will be humming with music and a market highlighting local artists. The lowdown: Grab a picnic blanket, sprawl out on the rolling green of Candler Park and take in the tunes. There’s also a 5K and fun run and a tour of homes. Best part: It’s free.

ATLANTA PRIDE CELEBRATION

What: The 49th annual Pride celebration, Oct. 11-13, is a weekend dedicated to uniting and celebrating the LGBTQ community. The lowdown: The Atlanta Pride Parade caps the weekend. It starts at the Civic Center MARTA Station and goes north, ending at Piedmont Park. Other events include the Trans March and the Dyke March, which focus on the trans community and empowerment of women, respectively. What’s new: Every year Atlanta Pride picks several Grand Marshals to lead the parade. This year features former gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams, executive director of Asian Americans Advancing Justice—Atlanta Stephanie Cho, and Feroza Syed, a trans activist.

OKTOBERFEST

What: Oktoberfest at Historic Fourth Ward Park on Oct. 11-12. The lowdown: The weekend is sure to be a rowdy, energetic time for beer drinkers. There will be German beers to taste, German food for purchase and folks wearing their lederhosen and dirndl. Best part: The beer is great, as are games like keg roll racing and a stein-hoisting contest.

FALL FESTIVAL ON PONCE

What: Oct. 12-13 at Olmsted Linear Park. The park, designed by Frederick Olmsted Sr. (the designer who mapped out Central Park in New York), is connected by walking trails. The lowdown: Local and national artists sell their wares, including jewelry, paintings, sculptures and more. There’s also a kids area with games and activities, as well as plenty of food vendors. Best part: It’s easy to whiz past this gem while driving down Ponce de Leon Avenue. The festival offers a look at Ponce from a different angle.

The lowdown: The main tasting event on Saturday and Sunday features more than 90 local restaurants and cooking demos. VIP ticket holders have access to bartenders making cocktails in the VIP areas. Best part: The Friday night opening party may be the best food event you’ll attend all year. The ticket covers food, beer, wine and cocktail tastings and this kickoff party features live music by Moontower and Cordon Blues.

LITTLE FIVE POINTS HALLOWEEN FESTIVAL AND PARADE

What: This Oct. 19 festival benefits the Little 5 Business Association. The lowdown: Nearly 35,000 people pack the streets of Little Five Points dressed in their Halloween finest. Pro-tip: Go early to grab a good spot to watch the parade, which includes floats and wild costumes and may last up to two hours.

TASTE OF ATLANTA

What: From Oct. 18-20, Historic Fourth Ward Park becomes a one-stop spot for offerings from Atlanta’s best restaurants and bars. LITTLE FIVE POINTS HALLOWEEN FESTIVAL

Known for never accepting less than the best when it comes to sourcing coffee, Rev will get your day started right. Then, you’ll want to carb load to your heart’s content, with pastries, donuts, cookies, cake squares and more at McEntyre’s Bakery—and maybe even take a pie or cake to go.

A local favorite, the Silver Comet Trail is 61.5 miles long and winds through Cobb, Paulding and Polk counties before ending at the Georgia/Alabama state line. It connects up to Heritage Park, a 105-acre nature preserve where visitors can visit the Concord Woolen Mills ruins as well as nearby Concord Bridge and Nickajack Creek.

Guy Fieri visited KoreanJapanese sensation Yakitori Jinbei on Triple D and loved chef Jae Choi’s fried chicken and his approach of adding curry to ramen. Italian spot Scalini’s features nearly 300 baby photos, infants who were born shortly after their moms ate the eggplant parmigiana. Zucca is beloved for its specialty pies.

Get your drink on at The Corner Taqueria, which lines its shelves with 30 types of tequila and has local brews on tap. Pair one with its gourmet fusion tacos. Just down the street, Atkins Park Tavern’s previous incarnation was a deli; today it’s known for its wine and beer list, in addition to Southern fare with a Caribbean twist.

TRAVEL TIPS HIT THE

OPEN ROAD •Get up-to-date vet records and keep them in a folder on your person; you may be asked to produce these at any time (the rabies vaccination record is an absolute must). •If you’re traveling to an unfamiliar area, ask your vet to recommend a vet in that location. Research the pet ERs in the area as well.

•Make sure your pet wears a collar and tag imprinted with your name and phone number, as well as a temporary travel tag with your destination phone. •Ask your vet if sedatives are an option for your pet. •Line your pet’s carrier with a comfy blanket or pad and bring along a favorite toy; make sure they’ve relieved themselves before loading them in. •Fill a backpack with necessities such as pee pads, poop bags, paper plates, plastic bowls and wet food (must follow the liquids rule for carry-ons) when traveling by plane. If traveling by car,

bring cats a disposable litter box for every day of the trip. •Make sure your hotel accepts pets, and call ahead to verify the pet policy. When you arrive, inform them about your pet and ask about the nearest relief areas. •Always keep the “do not disturb” sign on your hotel room door when your pet is out of its carrier.

•Know the regulations for traveling with support animals. •Never leave your pet alone in a parked vehicle, no matter what the weather. •Be a responsible pet parent and always clean up after your pet.

•Keep your pet in its carrier any time you are not in your hotel room. •Check with the airlines far in advance to see if they have any species and breed restrictions.

COURTESY PHOTO BY FREESTOCKS.ORG FROM PEXELS

•Have your pet microchipped. Be sure to provide two current phone numbers as your contact information and upload a photo of your pet.
