Taking a Bite out of Atlanta Like many travelers, food is perhaps my favorite way to engage with different cultures. The popular rise in farmers' markets and food halls like Ponce City and Krog Street Markets make it easy to sample many in one place. In the heart of Downtown, the Municipal Market offers the same opportunity, with a generous side of history. 90 MINUTES IN: The Municipal Market building dates back nearly 100 years. Inside, the "Sweet Auburn Curb Market"—as locals affectionately know it— is home to more than 20 businesses. These vendors offer a range of provisions, from produce, meat and baked goods, to a diverse mix of eateries to a bookstore, pharmacy and even a teaching kitchen. While other food halls have amassed many top chefs under one

Sweet Auburn Curb Market roof, the Curb Market has served as a culinary incubator. Local favorites like Sweet Auburn Barbecue, Grindhouse Killer Burgers, Bell Street Burritos and Arepa Mia got their start at market stalls before expanding beyond its walls. Today, curious street art, Civil Rights history and Georgia State University surround the market, and the original mission rings true: fostering new opportunities and prosperity.

Ask the Expert YOUR CONCIERGE

Trevor Hollis Concierge, The Georgian Terrace

Q: What's your favorite fall activity? A: I always like to go up to Stone Mountain or the North Georgia Mountains to see the leaves changing. Rome, Georgia is one of my favorite places to go to. I also love shopping [at Topman and Bill Hallman] and seeing the new sweater fashions.

CHOOSE YOUR CHAMPION

Q: Where's the best place to get a pumpkin spice latte? A: I always like San Francisco Coffee Roasting Co. They have a location in Virginia-Highland. Q: What is the "must-attend" Halloween celebration? A: Well I have a few. The first one is Nightmare on Peachtree. It takes place at 200 Peachtree and it's just a huge party. There are several different rooms with different activities, a costume contest and much more. My second recommendation is the Little 5 Points Festival and Parade. And lastly, Blake's always does a good Halloween Drag Show. Q: A few guests are looking for a dinner recommendation before a show at the Fox Theatre. Where do you send them? A: I always recommend Livingston Restaurant + Bar and Edgar's Proof and Provision here at The Georgian Terrace, but you absolutely need a reservation. If you can't get a reservation, then my next choice is Poor Calvin's. It's a fusion restaurant: East meets South of Thai and Southern cuisine.

The hungry traveler’s guide to exploring the ATL

LOCAL FLAVOR

The Gospel, According to Biscuits The buzzy arrival of Alabama-based Holler & Dash Biscuit House to the Westside’s Howell Mill Road makes one wonder: can Atlanta have too many breakfast spots serving fresh and flaky, light and fluffy biscuits? Director of Culinary Brandon Frohne—and gut instinct—beg to differ. The more important question is: which will you put on your plate?

For more information wheretraveler.com

Counter Culture

Q & A NICK PURDY

There are many reasons why biscuits remain a morning standby in the South. Atlanta can count them by the dozen. Keep this list handy, especially on Sunday mornings when the closest Chick-fil-a is closed. Holler + Dash

Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit

Food 101

New state laws have changed how breweries do business. The result? More hours of operation and the ability to sell pints directly to customers—and cause for celebration. Wild Heaven Beer’s president shares what’s next in the world of beer.

(OPPOSITE PAGE) ©HOLLER & DASH (THIS PAGE); ©HOLLER & DASH; ©JASON STEMPLE; ©FOOD 101; ©WILD HEAVEN BEER

What does the change mean for WHB? What it means is that we can now prioritize that opportunity to really engage with the people that want to come visit us—some of who are fans, some of who are tourists, some of who are just curious about beer, some of them just looking for an easy, fun thing to do for a day. HOLLER & DASH Whether you like sweet (like the Strawberry & Dash with Creole cream cheese) or savory (try the Pork Rambler, piled with pork tenderloin, blackberry butter and onion straws), your food is guaranteed in minutes. Healthful bites, local coffee and online ordering are also available. 1085 Howell Mill Road FLYING BISCUIT CAFÉ This Atlanta institution originated in Candler Park in 1993 and has since grown to 14 locations in three states. Breakfast is served all day, and each café bakes almost 5,000 of their fluff y, flying biscuits per week. Don’t be shy with that cranberry apple butter. HIGHLAND BAKERY Three words: sweet potato biscuits. The original eatery is in the Old Fourth Ward, but additional locations can be found around town. 655 Highland Ave. NE CALLIE’S HOT LITTLE BISCUIT Rolled by hand and sold by the pair, these two-bite biscuits are made with buttermilk, cheese and chive or shortcake, then topped with your choice of additions from bacon to sliced avocado to jam. 1004 Virginia Ave. NE

REVIVAL Celebrity chef Kevin Gillespie has well established his allegiance to Southern cuisine, so you bet that the brunch menu at his Decatur restaurant includes a Cathead Biscuit with Spicy Sawmill Gravy. 129 Church Street HOME GROWN Egg, bacon, ham, pork sausage, turkey sausage, veggie patty, salmon patty, fried chicken, biscuit and gravy or a plain ol’ biscuit, the options abound at this next-generation, meat-and-three in Reynoldstown. Best of all? The price is right, with most of these options hovering around $3. 968 Memorial Drive SE BUTTERMILK KITCHEN Housed in a cozy building just north of Buckhead, a meal here is designed to nourish the body as much as the soul. A star of the menu is the chicken biscuit—fried chicken breast and housemade red pepper jelly, served with pimento cheese grits and house pickles. 4225 Roswell Road 8ARM In an unassuming strip across from Ponce City Market, 8ARM has remained a breakout star since opening in 2016. Pastry chef Sarah Dodge and her daily assortment of baked goods

are largely responsible. Stop in before 3 pm for a hip coffee shop with full breakfast/lunch menus before 8ARM flips to a full service restaurant by night. 710 Ponce De Leon Ave. NE STAR PROVISIONS Anne Quatrano’s stalwart recently moved to a dreamy new location, and considering everything is baked fresh daily on the premises, the sausage biscuit with strawberry preserves might only be a starting point. 1460 Ellsworth Drive RIA’S BLUEBIRD This Grant Park diner offers a neighborhood feel and breakfast all day. Two handmade buttermilk biscuits with pepper milk gravy are a cool $5. For bigger appetites, add a biscuit to the Brisket Breakfast or Bluebird Burrito. Across the street, Historic Oakland Cemetery is a good place to walk off your meal later. 421 Memorial Drive SE FOOD 101 This Sandy Springs staple specializes in New South cuisine. Due to popular demand, Sunday brunch items (10:30 am-3 pm) are now also available Saturday (11 am-3 pm), and best when washed down with a Bloody Mary. And that’s a combo you can’t get at Chickfil-a. 4969 Roswell Road

Tell us about the second outpost. [Our West End facility] is going to be in a much higher-traffic, consumer area being on the Atlanta Beltline. We are imaging [it] being open more often...We’ll be serving food out of a kitchen there—another new privilege the law allows. Where do you like to go out for a pint? I am a long-time resident of the Decatur area, so all the usual suspects over in our part of town. Lately though, I can tell you that sitting on the roof at 9 Mile Station at Ponce City Market has been a real treat. Any collaborations in the works? Yes, there is a pretty major one that is coming this fall. The beer will be called ‘Southern Symphony,’ and it’s a collaboration with Cigar City in Tampa, [Florida] and us. That’s going to be a very complex, barrelaged, sour, wild ale. It’s got scuppernong and muscadine grapes, hence the ‘Southern Symphony’ idea.

and across the South. From Oct. 1-8, explore brunch, lunch and dinner options at participating restaurants from $15, $25 and/or $35 prix-fixe menus. TASTE OF ATLANTA Held Oct. 20-22 in Historic Fourth Ward Park, there’s no better festival to see the diversity of Atlanta’s food scene in one place. More than 90 neighborhood favorites show off their craveable dishes, local chefs strut their stuff on four live demo stages and Grand Tasting Experience patrons hit boozy nirvana sampling craft beers, wine and cocktails. Tickets: $25-75/day. BIG GREEN EGG EGGTOBER FEST Fire up the grills! Justin Anthony

Fuel for the Jet Set In fact, the aiport abounds with dining options, from high brow to hidden gems, so why not ask a globetrotter for advice? Case in point: local restaurateur Justin Anthony (just take a glance at his Instagram account). Nearly 20 years ago, the epicurean opened 10 Degrees South in Buckhead alongside his parents, creating the first South African restaurant in the country. Today, Anthony’s Atlanta-based hospitality group, True Story Brands, continues to share the lifestyle and experience of South Africa via his additional restaurants Yebo Beach Haus, Cape Dutch and Biltong Bar. In other words, this hardworking tastemaker earns his vacation time. Here’s how Anthony navigates his home airport’s concourses as well as his favorite menus before take off.

ECCO If you have time to spare before or between flights, savor one of Atlanta’s premiere dining experiences—conveniently replicated in a concourse near you. Ecco established its reputation for combining seasonal European cuisine, casual sophistication and an adventurous beverage program in Midtown before duplicating the concept. “It’s great when flying out of Terminal F on a long international flight on Delta to South Africa,” Anthony says. “I always order the tagliatelle bolognese.” Another popular bite is fried goat cheese. For fellow fans, a third location is planned for Buckhead’s Phipps Plaza. GRINDHOUSE KILLER BURGERS “One of my favorite burger restaurants in Atlanta, and it’s always great to be able to grab an amazing cheeseburger in the airport,” he says. Get your hands on one at Concourse T or D. Bonus: the aiport outposts offer mouthwatering breakfast sandwiches starting at 6 am daily. Their full-service bar opens at 9 am daily.

CHICKEN + BEER “I love good fried chicken and Ludacris’ restaurant never disappoints,” Anthony says. You read that correctly. Recording artist and actor Chris “Ludacris” Bridges has ventured into the culinary arena with this 90-seat restaurant. Snack on Southern-style comfort food and sip on local craft beers while enjoying an ambiently cool vibe, from the playlist to bold wall art. GOLDBERG’S BAGEL CO. & DELI Authentic New York deli foods, mixed with Southern hospitality. “If I’m flying out in the morning, Goldberg’s is the best place to grab breakfast,” he says. ”I typically order a plain bagel toasted with nova, tomato and capers.” CHICK-FIL-A Sometimes, you do need a quick bite. “You can never go wrong with a No. 1 combo...Original fried chicken sandwich, [waffle] fries and sweet tea,“ Anthony says. Fun fact: the first location actually opened in Hapeville, a community that neighbors Hartsfield-Jackon. 11

Atlanta Your Way

Family Friendly

All aboard the (1) Blue Ridge Scenic Railway! Approximately 1.5 hours north of Atlanta, visitors can take in stunning views of fall color from a vintage rail car traveling along the beautiful Toccoa River. On Oct. 29, families can opt for a ride on the Pumpkin Express to Farmer Brown’s field to pick out a souvenir pumpkin. Back in charming Blue Ridge, (2) Mercier Orchards is a must stop in the fall. Pick your own apples or fill your basket with tasty treats from the bakery, deli and market store. In need of an indoor activity instead? Enjoy prime playtime with your crew at the 3) Children's Museum of Atlanta. The "Sid the Science Kid: The Super-Duper Exhibit!" brings the award-winning PBS KIDS TV series to life, keeping little minds entertained with handson learning about the world around them.

Whether you overindulged at the bar, overextended your workout, are recovering from jet lag or feel a flu coming on, (1) Vida-Flo wants to help you feel better faster with IV hydration therapy. At the Brookhaven, Buckhead and Kennesaw locations (or a house call), patients can receive relief in as little as 45 minutes. Next, conscious eaters can keep spirits high at (2) Chai Pani. The Decatur rendition of this Asheville, North Carolina craze from James Beard nominated Chef Meherwan Irani delivers fresh takes on Indian-style street snacks, like kale pakoras and the finger-licking Sev Potato Dahi Puri. Looking for a healthier option for girls' night out? Swap heels for cross trainers and join (3) good4girls for a fitness rave on Oct. 13 at Tounge & Groove to benefit the Atlanta chapter of Girls on the Run.

A celebration of diversity and social justice marches on for 47th annual (1) Atlanta Pride on Oct. 13-15. Festivities kick off with a party at the Georgia Aquarium, then continue with a weekend full of parades, concerts and costumes in Piedmont Park. Keep an eye out for local favorites, like street performer Baton Bob and the (2) Atlanta Bucks Rugby Football Club. The amateur sports team is committed to building a competitive team that operates in an all-inclusive environment. On Oct. 28, the club hosts their annual Ruck-a-Buck tournament with other teams in the International Gay Rugby league. Pride in diversity is also on display year-round at (3) 10th & Piedmont. Large windows at this popular bar and brunch spot overlook the intersection famously painted with rainbow crosswalks.
