Q: What better way to celebrate sending the kids back to school than with a few celebratory cocktails? Where's your favorite bar for an adults-only night out? A: Look no further than The Lawrence, home of some of my favorite bartenders in all of Atlanta. The Lawrence boasts a bar that looks like it came out of a scene from Harry Potter, which is fitting considering the bartenders are wizards when it comes to conjuring up creative craft cocktails. So grab a babysitter and kiss the kids goodnight! It's time to toast to the end of summer break. Q: For the college students that are headed back to the city for another semester, where is a great coffee shop to study? A: With school back in full swing, it's imperative to have a nice comfortable environment to hit the books or meet for group projects in peace. Downtown in the midst of Georgia State's "campus" you will find Ebrik Coffee Room. Ebrik's baristas are very warm and welcoming. Even more importantly, they make a magnificent mocha frappe. Ebrik has plenty room to get comfortable with your cup of joe and homework. No need to worry about fighting for a position next to outlets to charge your lap tops and phone; there's plenty of outlets and complimentary WiFi. 2 W H E R E AT L A N TA I S E P T E M B E R 2 018

Q: Where is your favorite local bookstore? A: To be honest, I am a creature of habit. Once I find something that's reliable and works for, me I run with it. Since moving to Downtown Atlanta, that's exactly what Barnes and Noble has been for me—reliable. They literally have something for everyone. My favorite location is the one located in the Edgewood Retail District, located just south of Little 5 Points. I couldn't tell you how many times I've dropped in to grab a clutch last-minute gift! Also their in-house Starbucks is a great place to sit with a latte and get a head start on a recently purchased book. Their store in Midtown located off of 5th Street has the best Georgia Tech gear around, too. Q: Are there any upcoming events at your hotel or in the city that you want to share? A: Atlanta has been on fire all year long with spectacular events, and this fall and winter season, [the city is] only showing signs of heating up even more. I am super excited for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s celebration of Prince on Sept. 15. This is the first and only estate-approved Prince celebration, and the iconic ASO is sure to put on a show we will never forget. As far as the magnificent Marquis goes, stop in and enjoy dinner at our fire-inspired steakhouse Sear (get the crab cake; you can thank me later). Afterwards, relax with a beer or glass of wine at Pulse, while you watch the Atlanta Falcons get a win on our ginormous TV monitor. Q: What is your favorite Atlanta tour? A: I have two tours that I love and equally recommend to guests. First is the Peachtree Trolley. Their staff is very knowledgeable and the trolley is super comfortable, perfect for the 90-minute tour they provide. ATL-Cruzers Segway Tour is a great way to spend a beautiful day in Atlanta. Zip around on your Segway while your tour guides give you a grand introduction to our city.

Q: Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. What's your favorite breakfast spot in town? A: Whenever I have company in town, I always make time to treat them to a delicious breakfast. My go-to breakfast spot would have to be Le Petit Marche over in Kirkwood. This "little market" has humble beginnings, and you can taste the love and passion that it took to make this neighborhood favorite the success it is in every bite. Whether you decide to build your own breakfast sandwich or you settle for a lighter option such as the Best Oatmeal Ever, you're guaranteed to leave happy and full.

Falling in Love with Atlanta Life seems to happen faster and faster lately. Ready or not, September welcomes the first day of fall, and with it comes one of my favorite (new) traditions: the Atlanta BeltLine Lantern Parade on Sept. 22. Even if you can't attend this night fest, check out the BeltLine by sun or moon. 90 MINUTES IN:

(TOP TO BOTTOM) COURTESY COLLEEN ANN MCNALLY; ŠANTHONY-MASTERSON

Dating back to Ryan Gravel's 1999 graduate school thesis, the BeltLine took years and lots of grassroots work to get moving. Today, the project is considered the City of Atlanta's most comprehensive revitalization effort yet—and is still in flux. The neighborhoods surrounding the BeltLine's Eastside Trail comprise one of the fastest growing areas in the ATL. While it can get quite crowded (especially

Atlanta BeltLine on weekends) with cyclists, joggers, rollerbladers and dog-walkers, I recommend taking a stroll to soak in the public art and skyline views. Better yet, if you have more time to spare, rent a bike or hop on a guided ride with Bicycle Tours of Atlanta—perhaps the best way to see the city's rapid growth, for better or worse. After all, this season reminds us the only constant is change. Happy fall, y'all!

The City’s Best Workouts Trying a new studio can be overwhelming, so whether you live to sweat, stretch, or something in between, here’s a list of a dozen more of Atlanta’s most popular—and fun—workouts to give a spin. City Surf Fitness

(OPPOSITE) COURTESY SCULPTHOUSE (THIS PAGE, LEFT TO RIGHT) SCARED CHILL WEST; @HANNAHLIMPHOTO; AMBER MCDONNELL; CARSON MATTHEWS

Sacred Chill

SCULPTHOUSE Get the best of both worlds at SculptHouse, the world’s first studio to combine Megaformer strength training with cardio on the Woodway Curve treadmill. The signature 50 minute workout includes 25 minutes on each piece of equipment, while other classes target upper body, lower body and core workouts on alternating days to sculpt your entire body. SACRED CHILL WEST Looking for a calming and centering workout to counteract your hectic life or balance out your cardio addiction? Sacred Chill is all that the name implies, with restorative, yin, yoga nidra and meditation classes to help you slow down, and well, chill. Don’t miss the Sunday afternoon musically themed yin flow classes, which often book out days in advance. CITY SURF FITNESS No coastline? No problem. You won’t even miss the water with the 30- and 50-minute full-body, high-intensity surfinspired workouts at City Surf. Cheery Instagrammable walls, encouraging instructors, and peppy playlists will distract you from the challenge of intervals of body weight, resistance band and dumbbell

Fit9

exercises performed both on and off the surf board, which provides an added challenge to your balance and core. SOULCYCLE The cycling studio with the cult following finally opened an Atlanta outpost earlier this year. Think cycling class meets dance party as instructors lead you through traditional sprint, hill and arm segments as well as feel-good choreography so fun, you’ll forget how much you’re sweating. Leave the gadgets and your ego at the door—the cycling studio is a phone-free zone and eschews the traditional leaderboard in lieu of creating an immersive mind-body experience. EXHALE SPA Located inside the Loews Atlanta Hotel, this serene and stunning urban oasis offers something for everyone, including a mix of barre, spin, yoga, cardio, HIIT classes and a state of the art gym with sweeping views of Midtown. Drop into the zen lounge and sauna and steam rooms or book a facial or massage to help wind down post workout. VESTA MOVEMENT Always wanted to try boxing but intimidated by dark, testosterone-filled gyms? The female duo that own

Vesta set out to combat those stereotypes and create a positive, empowering workout experience for women. All genders are welcome in the tropical colored welcoming space, which offers one-hour newbie-friendly yet intense HIIT-like kickboxing and strength classes. NOVEMBER PROJECT ATL Looking for a fun, free workout? Need the accountability of a hundred or more friends to get you moving in the morning? November Project ATL, the local chapter of the thriving worldwide fitness phenomenon is part social club, part workout. The group meets twice a week-Wednesdays at the North Avenue bridge on the Atlanta BeltLine and varying locations on Friday—for team building workouts with running stairs, burpees, relay races and more. DEFINE BODY Tired of the treadmill? Take your workout to the trampoline at DEFINE’s BOUNCE class, which alternates intervals on the trampoline with targeted barre work—more fun and less stress on your knees and joints. The studio also offers BODY classes, which incorporate Pilates, yoga, corestrengthening and ballet into a full body mat workout.

STRENGTH IN NUMBERS With an inherent passion for health and wellness, Amy Selig is the coowner of Stellar Bodies, Fit9 and Eclipse One on One Fitness Studio. If you’re looking to get plugged in to the local workout scene, this family of studios offers three ways to start. FIT9 Why choose between boxing, strength training, and cardio when you can do all three in one class? Fit 9’s one is broken into four segments: boxing with a water-filled Aqua training bag which reduces impact on joints, strength work with plyo boxes, floor sliders, and suspension trainers, and two rounds on a specialized treadmill called the SkillMill, which includes all-out sprints, side shuffles, and lunges. Competitive types—you can track your metrics over time and see how you’re comparing to your classmates in real time. STELLAR BODIES With classes at locations in Buckhead and Midtown, this 60-minute workout alternates short intervals of treadmill work (hills, side shuffles, and lunges) with floor work (dumbbells, medicine balls, resistance bands), all catered to individual heart rate zones and fitness levels. Instructors will even refill your water bottle or swap out your weights for you so you don’t miss a beat. ECLIPSE ONE ON ONE Looking for a premier personal fitness atmosphere with elite trainers? With clients ranging from gym fanatics to retired athletes, new moms and local celebs, Eclipse may be the right fit for you, too. Regardless of who walks through the door, their staff aims to respect all bodies and spirits.

No tickets to the big game? No problem. Irby’s Tavern in Buckhead has been revived for the modern era, and is the place to grab a seat this season. As the story goes, a man named Henry Irby built a tavern and grocery store back in the mid-1800s at what’s now the corner of Peachtree Road and East Paces Ferry. His establishment became a popular watering hole for locals as well as travelers — so much so that the area became known as Irbyville. That was until, according to legend, a proud hunter hung a buck’s head on a post outside of the tavern one day. People began using this as a landmark, telling friends to meet up at the buck’s head. The name stuck, and Buckhead was born. Paying tribute to that heritage, Atlanta’s new hometown sports bar takes pride in its sense of familiarity and community for locals and out-of-towners alike. Chow down on favorites like Pimento Cheese Corn Dog Bites, the late Chef Angus Brown’s “Garbage Bread” or slow-roasted, flash-fried wings. Pair bites with a local brew, a Gov’t Mule or the Spicy Like Yo Mama Bloody Mary—made with Breckenridge Chili Chile Vodka, Cutwater Spicy Bloody Mary Mix and Tabasco, garnished with an assortment of pickled veggies, olives and lime. That combination is a win in our book, regardless of the final score. www.irbystavern.com

Every Saturday during football season, tailgat-

ing is back at the Chick-fil-A College Football Hall of Fame (as if you needed another reason to visit). The whole family is invitied to watch college games all day and enjoy a cash bar and concessions. Fans can also participate in The Home Depot scavenger hunt and try to find five official College GameDay hard hats. Each guest that finds a hat in the building earns a prize. New this fall, the Hall of Fame will be honoring the 2018 College Football Hall of Fame Class with a special exhibit dedicated to the inductees. While you’re there, try to kick a field goal on the 45-yard indoor football field or record your own GameDay video sitting alongside Rece and Desmond. It’s the ultimate experience for triedand-true college football fans. www.cfbhall.com

Actually, Bird Scooters are gaining popularity in cities from coast to coast and in Paris, France. The electronic sharing system syncs with your smartphone for a reliable, last-mile ride that gets you where you’re going faster—perhaps from your parking spot to the stadium, or from the MARTA station to your tailgating spot. Here’s how it works: download the Bird app and have your valid license ready. The app will tell you where the nearest scooter is located to you. There’s a flat rate of $1 to begin, plus a small fee per minute. Then, take off and take in Atlanta with the freedom of a bird. Ride in bike lanes when available rather than sidewalks, and bring your own helmet. www.bird.co 13

MAPS MAP 3 ATLANTA DOWNTOWN & INTOWN NEIGHBORHOODS

[WHERE INSIDE]

Atlanta Your Way

Civil Rights

Creatives

Young Families

Get a new perspective on the city's historical legacy with (1) Atlanta Food Walks in the heart of Downtown. Local flavor, powerful stories and unexpected places reveal some of the city’s best fried chicken, pralines and moonshine while tracking how food shaped the Civil Rights Movement. Hungry for more? Head to the (2) Center for Civil and Human Rights, where visitors find connections between past and present issues around the globe. Next, round out your itinerary with a visit to the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historical Park and (3) The King Center. At the latter, you'll find Dr. & Mrs. King’s final resting places as well as The Eternal Flame, which symbolizes the continuing effort to realize Dr. King’s dream and vision for a world of justice, peace and equality for all mankind.

Be inspired. Located inside The St. Regis Atlanta, (1) Atlas boasts artful dishes and an acclaimed art installation featuring 30 pieces hand-selected from The Lewis Collection, one of the largest private art collections in the world. Take it all in during their Winemaker Dinner Series. This month's Barolo and Truffles Dinner with Paolo DeMarie from DeMarie Winery is slated for Sept. 19. Looking for something a little more out of the box—or at least out of the Perimeter? (2) Gwinnett County's dining scene takes visitors on a global tour, no passport required. Looking for something even more...imaginative? The 5th anniversary of (3) Imagine Music Festival returns to Atlanta Motor Speedway on Sept. 21-23 with a unique lineup of artists and its immersive aquatic fairytale-like atmosphere.

Located in Midtown's arts-and-culture district, (1) Center for Puppetry Arts invites families on a high-flying adventure to Neverland. The modern twist on the time-honored classic "Peter Pan" soars back to the unique museum's theatre from Sept. 25-Oct. 28. Meanwhile, Downtown's (2) Children's Museum of Atlanta presents "Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood: A Grr-ific Exhibit" from Sept. 22– Jan. 6, 2019, bringing to life the themes presented in the award-winning PBS Kids series. Last but far from least, (3) World of Coca-Cola is a quintessential destination for Atlanta visitors of all ages. Little ones will love sampling sodas from around the globe, getting a behindthe-scenes look at the bottling process and meeting (and maybe having their photo taken with) the famous Coca-Cola Polar Bear.
