ow that summer is here in full blast, it’s natural for the coast and its beaches to seem like a blissful reprieve. Whether it’s ritzy and hip Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Provincetown, or picturesque and less-crowded Cape Ann, there are plenty of delights along the beaches. Wineries, fi lm and music festivals and artsy enclaves add vibrancy to these coastal havens. You’d be remiss to overlook the inland fun that awaits a short ride out of Boston. If you’re not wedded to the water, there are outstanding museums, top-notch music (popular and classical), food festivals and sports galore in store between the Berkshires on the west, or across state lines in Vermont and Rhode Island. So when you’re ready to venture out of Boston, all you need is to get the lowdown on what’s in store (our feature has that covered), a desire to explore (isn’t that a given), and a car to get you going.

Get Out of Town!

There’s plenty to do in the city in summer—from free concerts at the Hatch Shell to Boston Calling Block Parties to name a few, then there are world-class museums and plenty of history to take in. However, if you want to see what Boston’s neighbors have to offer, variety is only a tankful of gas away. MATTHEW ROBINSON

TOWARDS THE SUN With a list of summer residents that includes past presidents and other celebrities, Cape Cod and the island of Martha’s Vineyard offer upscale delights and plenty of scenic beach views. However, not everyone comes for the sea and sand. In fact, Martha’s Vineyard has become a popular destination for film enthusiasts. The Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival (www.mvaaff.com) takes place August 5-10, and this Oscarqualifying film festival for the Short Film category is held at the Martha’s Vineyard Performing Arts Center. There’s also The Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival (www. tmvff.org), whose summer film series includes screenings of “Bedlam” (Aug. 14), “Driving While Black” (Aug. 21) and “Maiden” (Aug. 28). The Cape is also starting to turn heads for its growing wine scene. Cape Cod Winery (www.capecodwinery.com)

offers nine varieties of wine, including Sauvignon Blanc and rosé. The vineyard sits on the site of a former strawberry farm and is just three miles from the ocean. First Crush Winery ( firstcrushwinery. com) sources its grapes from the Suisun Valley AVA in Northern California, and offers wines ranging from Sangiovese to Sauvignon Blanc. Truro Vineyards (trurovineyardsofcapecod.com) produces over a dozen varietals each year and even hosts the occasional grape stomp. Even further still lies Provincetown with its wealth of natural beauty, including parks and long stretches of white sand beaches. Most famous for being the site of the Mayflower’s landing in 1620, this little town (nicknamed P-Town) is also well-known for its advocacy of the LGBTQ community. Over 90,000 people make the trek each year for the Provincetown Carnival to celebrate all things LGBTQ, with parties, art fairs, and performances

TRUE NORTH In the northeast tip of Massachusetts in Cape Ann (capeannvacations.com), you’ll find the picturesque summer hideaways of Rockport and Gloucester. At Rockport, many come to stroll Bearskin Neck, an art-centric colony filled with rustic local shops and Motif #1, a little red shack dubbed “the most-often painted building in the world.” You can watch saltwater taffy being made at Tuck’s (www. tuckscandy.com), and try flavors ranging from peanut butter to cranberry and café latte. The Rockport Music Festival (rockportmusic.org) is a huge draw and regularly attracts international stars and their fans. Enjoy the Jazz Festival August 4-11 or the Celtic Festival August 23-25. For a jaunt across state lines, head to Vermont to experience Suicide Six’s new family-friendly mountain biking park (www.suicide6.com). It offers downhill tracks as well as a skills area for more experienced riders and a strider park that is perfect for little ones. After you work up an appetite biking, throttle down a bit with dinner at the Mill, a part of the flagship Simon Pearce store (www. simonpearce.com). Choose from upscale cuisine options like horseradish crusted cod or rhubarb- and ginger-glazed rack of lamb. Woodstock, the closest town to Suicide Six, puts on their Taste of Woodstock festival (www.woodstockvt.com) on August 10. More than 50 vendors set up

Where Now shop on Elm Street, offering food, crafts and family-friendly activities. Not to be undone, Farmhouse Pottery (www.farmhousepottery. com) is always a treat. This store is home to the largest studio pottery workshop in America and offers “clay dates” where you can learn and work alongside a master potter to create a souvenir to take home.

SOUTHBOUND Don’t be fooled by its size— Rhode Island is filled with things to do and places to explore. Newport, a city that’s famous for its sailing culture, is also home to the International Tennis Hall of Fame (www. tennisfame.com) and Newport Polo (www.nptpolo.com), home of America’s first polo club, established in 1876. It also hosts the Newport

International Polo Series. Bellevue Avenue in Newport is also famous for Gilded Age mansions that acted as summer homes for some of the 19th-century’s most affluent Americans. To the east and closer to the waterfront is the magnificent former home of the Vanderbilts, called The Breakers (www. newportmansions.org). For even more history, stop by the Newport Historical Society (newporthistory. org) on August 24 for their annual

While Boston dominates the east end of the Bay State, don’t overlook all there is to do out west. On the way to the scenic Berkshires, be sure to drive through Amherst and stop by the Emily Dickinson Museum (www.emilydickinsonmuseum. org), the Yiddish Book Center (www.yiddishbookcenter.org) and the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art (www.carlemuseum.org). Just outside of Amherst, you’ll also find the Mt. Holyoke Range State Park, which features seven miles of mountain ridgeline and more than 30 miles of hiking trails. Further west still, a regular stop for many is the music venue Tanglewood in Lenox. Tanglewood is the Boston Symphony Orchestra’s summer home (www. bso.org). Big draws include the free Family Fun Fest on August

2 and performances from stellar musicians such as Yo-Yo Ma (see him perform all six of Bach’s Suites for Unaccompanied Cello on August 11). Just 10 minutes from Lenox is Stockbridge’s Norman Rockwell Museum (www.nrm.org), celebrating its 50th anniversary with special exhibitions and events. In the very northwest corner of Massachusetts, head to Williamstown for the Williamstown Theatre Festival (wtfestival.org) and catch Uma Thurman in Ibsen’s “Ghosts” until August 18. A 15-minute drive from there, in North Adams, MassMOCA (the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, www.massmoca. org) is exhibiting music legend Annie Lenox, and their new exhibit “ERRE: Them and Us/Ellos y Nosotros” opens August 3.

living history event. This event commemorates the burning of John Hancock’s HMS Liberty after it had been seized by the British Navy, which is considered to be one of the first acts of defiance against the British in the years leading up to the American Revolution. A little closer to Boston is Providence, the capital of Rhode Island. For a unique way to see the city, bring your own bottle of wine and ride an authentic Venetian gondola (www.gondolari.com) along the Woonasquatucket River (Algonquian for “where the salt water ends”). On August 3 and 17, make sure you’re by the water to

see the WaterFire (waterfire.org). This sculpture by Barnaby Evans is installed on the three rivers in Providence; over eighty bonfires are lit on the sculptures that hover directly over the water, making for a spectacular experience, complete with music. For a culinary experience, try Rhode Island Red Food Tours (www.rhodeislandredfoodtours. com). Offering tours in both Newport and Providence, it hits six tasting locations in less than 3.5 hours. While Logan International may be your point of departure, there are many other points around

Boston and throughout New England that make for a fun get away. All you have to do is give it a go.

Splash of Color The Rings Fountain is back to delighting visitors with its playful spurts of water and a new continuous evening light show. Marvel at it on The Greenway, near the New England Aquarium and Faneuil Hall.

Without A Passport

Visit Italy

When our family opened Lucia in 1977, we were the first restaurant to bring authentic Italian cuisine to the North End. We proudly invite you to taste the culture and traditions of Abruzzo—our homeland, Italy’s culinary mecca, and our inspiration in serving Boston’s oldest neighborhood for 42 years and counting.
