TWELFTH NIGHT A shipwreck sets in motion a wild and whimsical tale of mistaken identities, separated twins, rebellious servants, unrequited love and a pair of ridiculous yellow stockings. After the twelfth night, the land of Illyria will never be the same. Washed ashore and separated from her twin brother, the plucky Viola must learn to survive alone in an exotic foreign country. Disguising herself as a man, she quickly becomes entangled in a web of amorous pursuits gone awry. CURIOUS AFFECTION Renowned hyperrealist artist Patricia Piccinini is bringing her most recognisable works to GOMA for “Curious Affection”, a retrospective exhibition spanning 20 years. Occupying the entire ground floor, the works include her best known weird and wonderful creations together with works, such as a large-scale inflatable sculpture, which have been especially conceived for the Gallery’s expansive spaces. South Bank Secrets
By Tiana Templeman
SOUTH BANK HAS AN EXCITEMENT all
its own and some of the best shopping, drinking, dining and entertainment options in Brisbane. With charming markets, excellent restaurants, alfresco bars and cultural activities galore, there has never been a better time to visit. THINGS TO DO South Bank is well known for its swimming lagoon Streets Beach, but there are plenty of alternative activities for those who prefer to stay dry. The Gallery of Modern Art, or GOMA as it is affectionately known, has an international reputation for hosting exhibitions that are the envy of other galleries with the likes of Picasso, Matisse and Warhol drawing record crowds. Culture aficionados can also explore the more traditional Queensland Art Gallery or the Queensland Museum and Sciencentre which continues to evolve with the addition of high-tech installations. The latter is a big hit with kids of all ages. Across the road at South Bank Parklands you can take to the sky on The Wheel
of Brisbane, a giant observation wheel which takes you high above the city. If you would prefer to take to the water, River City Cruises offer a range of relaxing tours which include a hop-off option so you can explore further afield. The Queensland Maritime Museum houses historical maritime artefacts, photographs and paintings in its collection, alongside numerous vessels which you can explore, such as the World War II frigate HMAS Diamantina and the powerful steam tug Forceful. SHOPPING SECRETS South Bank is home to a number of eclectic creative markets. If you have an appetite for the unusual and like to browse, visit the Collective Markets. Here you can pick up handmade fashion, vintage collectibles, jewellery, homewares and furniture at affordable prices. Little Stanley Street plays host to the Young Designers Market on the first Sunday of every month. Everything at this market is handmade by the stall holders.
WHERE TO EAT South Bank has a dazzling selection of restaurants and cafés, many of which capitalise on Queensland’s love of outdoor dining. South Bank Surf Club overlooks the famous swimming lagoon and gives an inner-city twist to the traditional Aussie surf club. It is a great spot for a drink and a bite to eat on a sunny afternoon. Alongside the river there is River Quay, a collection of sleek dining options ranging from champagne breakfasts at River Quay Fish to rustic Italian share plates at Popolo and the steakhouse sophistication of Stokehouse Q. Fresh seafood, home-style favourites and an Indonesian influence can be found at The Jetty, while Francophiles will appreciate Aquitaine Brasserie, a charming alfresco diner offering a delicious taste of France with classic dishes such as Marseille bouillabaisse. Try The Spaghetti House Trattoria if you’re in the mood for traditional Italian favourites served in a stylish but homely space. If you are planning a trip to South Bank, bring your appetite with you! A trip to The Plough Inn is a must. This family-owned Aussie pub was established in 1864 and is a Brisbane icon. Hang out on the deck, or head to beer garden, where there’s live entertainment seven nights a week. Dine at The Plough Inn’s Steakhouse, which offers traditional pub fare with a modern twist.

MARVELLOUS MT COOT-THA
By Kerry Heaney
AT 287 METRES above sea level,
Mt Coot-tha might be little more than a large hill, but it’s the best place to see Brisbane, from the suburbs to the ocean. Reach Brisbane Lookout by driving from the inner city on Milton Road and the winding Sir Samuel Griffith Drive. From the viewing platform, you’ll see why people have been heading up the mountain to enjoy the panorama both day and night for more than 180 years. At the lookout, take in the view with a coffee or snack from Kuta Café or indulge with fine dining at the Summit Restaurant.
The Summit Restaurant building was redeveloped in the 1980s incorporating the second Federation-style kiosk built in 1918. Today, the Summit Restaurant is an award-winning venue with a menu that focuses on quality Queensland produce, and stunning vistas. Mt Coot-tha has many different picnic spots located along the road, but J.C. Slaughter Falls at the base of the mountain is one of the most popular. Along with plenty of barbecues and picnic tables, it has a burbling creek meandering through the middle. Mined for gold between 1890 and 1950, during the war years Mt Coot-tha was a
military base and explosives depot. You’ll find reminders of this history on the walking trails that criss-cross the slopes. The western side is popular with mountain bike riders while those walking tracks are a training ground for adventurers. At the base of the mountain is the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, 56 hectares of landscaped subtropical greenery, open every day from 8am to 5pm. Entry is free and there are also free guided walks Monday through Saturday at 11am and 1pm which leave from the Information Desk. A good place to relax with refreshments is the Botanical Café. Open daily from 9am to 4pm on weekdays and 8am to 5pm on weekends, it’s located near an entrance to the gardens and has a covered deck overlooking a picturesque lake. As you stroll along the winding garden paths, you’ll discover a Japanese Garden, Bonsai House, Fern House, areas of exotic rainforest, a lagoon and bamboo grove and dedicated activities for children. The Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium was named after the Governor of the New South Wales colony who arrived in 1821 and charted an unknown southern sky. The centre’s optical star projector creates a replica night sky, and regular shows are a feature. Mt Coot-tha is a 20-minute drive by car from Brisbane’s CBD and can also be accessed by bus.

LES CLEFS D’OR BY GRAHAM HODGSON, QU EENSL AN D STATE DIREC TOR WELCOME TO BRISBANE: Australia’s
New World City! Thank you for choosing Brisbane for your overnight stay, short break or extended vacation. Perhaps you’re here to attend the Commonwealth Games, in which case we hope that you and your country’s athletes have an enjoyable and successful event. No matter what your reason for being here, the month of April is a great time to explore South East Queensland. n There are several excellent wineries within a short drive of Brisbane. These include Sirromet Winery, Ocean View Estates and Flinders Peak Winery. If you don’t want to drive consider a winery tour—a day on The Vino Bus is guaranteed to please—or if you really want to impress your other half splash out on a helicopter tour with Pterodactyl Helicopters or S&S Aviation. If beer is more your thing the iconic XXXX Brewery, located just 10 minutes from the CBD, run several tours daily. Alternatively, sample some of Australia’s best craft beers with Hop on Brewery Tours.
n A day trip to one of the islands off Brisbane’s coast makes for an enjoyable outing. North Stradbroke Island, accessible by ferry out of Cleveland (a 40-minute drive from the city), is better suited to travellers with a car. This will allow for ease of access to Amity Point and Point Lookout on the northern tip and eastern side of the island.
