Celebrate the most wonderful time of the year at QPAC’s annual Spirit of Christmas concerts. A Very Kransky Christmas The multi award-winning Kransky Sisters bring their yuletide celebration, “A Very Kransky Christmas”, to Brisbane. In an Australian exclusive, “Gladiators: Heroes of the Colosseum” is now on at Queensland Museum. The exhibition features more than 110 original artefacts including pieces of the Colosseum, authentic elaborately decorated bronze gladiator helmets and original arms and armour preserved in the ashes of Pompeii. In this unique opportunity visitors will be able to immerse themselves in the everyday lives of Ancient Roman Gladiators with interactive games and displays that reveal who gladiators were, where they lived and how they trained. Expect a four-week extravaganza of free entertainment for Christmas in Brisbane as the wonder of the season sets the city alight. By Kerry Heaney. THE SILLY SEASON IS officially upon us. Until 24 December, the city, South Bank and Roma Street Parkland will be filled with Christmas trees, decorations and twinkling lights, carols, outdoor cinemas, parades, fireworks and markets. The Brisbane City Christmas Tree in King George Square lights up every night until Christmas Eve. City Hall bursts into more colour from Friday 8 to Sunday 24 December with the captivating Gold Lotto City Hall Lights showing every 15 minutes from 7.30pm to midnight. For the second year, Roma Street Parkland will expand Brisbane’s Christmas list with an Enchanted Garden and Christmas Movies in the Park. 8 WHERE BRISBANE I DECEMBER 2017 I wheretraveler.com

From 8 to 17 December, as the sun goes down and the evening settles in, Roma Street Parkland’s Enchanted Garden, a whimsical fairy-land of sparkling lights and lush, vibrant flora, springs to life. The Spectacle Garden will be filled with twinkling lights, beautiful decorations and soft music to create the Enchanted Garden, a festive feast for the senses. If you prefer to just relax on a warm Queensland summer night, grab your favourite picnic rug and settle in for an outdoor movie experience at Christmas Movies in the Park. Other events include the annual Lord Mayor’s Christmas Carols at Riverstage in the City Botanic Gardens on 9 December and the Christmas Parade presented by David Jones. This winds through Queen Street Mall and King George Square from Friday 15 to Sunday 24 December from 7pm. South Bank Secrets IT IS EARLY evening at South Bank and things are hotting up. The sound of people having fun mingles with soft jazz from a nearby restaurant and the heady scent of frangipani fills the air. Elegant fashionistas share the streets with tourists wearing t-shirts and there is no cut-off age limit for enjoying a night out. South Bank has an excitement all its own and some of the best shopping, drinking, dining and entertainment options in Brisbane. With charming markets, excellent restaurants, alfresco bars and cultural activities galore, there has never been a better time to visit.

THINGS TO DO South Bank is well known for its swimming lagoon Streets Beach, but there are plenty of alternative activities for those who prefer to stay dry. The Gallery of Modern Art, or GOMA as

it is affectionately known, has an international reputation for hosting exhibitions that are the envy of other galleries with the likes of Picasso, Matisse and Warhol drawing record crowds. Culture aficionados can also explore the more traditional Queensland Art Gallery or the Queensland Museum and Sciencentre which continues to evolve with the addition of high-tech installations. The latter is a big hit with kids of all ages. Across the road at South Bank Parklands you can take to the sky on The Wheel of Brisbane, a giant observation wheel which takes you high above the city. If you would prefer to take to the water, River City Cruises offer a range of relaxing tours which include a hop-off option so you can explore further afield. Another popular attraction with a maritime theme can be found at the southern end of the Parklands. The

Queensland Maritime Museum houses historical maritime artefacts, photographs and paintings in its collection, alongside numerous vessels which you can explore, such as the World War II frigate HMAS Diamantina and the powerful steam tug Forceful. It is a hands-on museum run by passionate volunteers, many of whom are retired ship masters, marine engineers and ex-naval personnel. SHOPPING SECRETS South Bank is home to a number of eclectic creative markets. If you have an appetite for the unusual and like to browse, visit the Collective Markets, which take place on Fridays at the Stanley Street Plaza from 5pm to 9pm, Saturdays from 10am to 9pm and Sundays from 9am to 4pm. Little Stanley Street plays host to the Young Designers Market on the first Sunday of every month from 10am to 4pm. Everything at this market is handmade by the stall holders. For many of these creative entrepreneurs, showing at the market is the first step towards the commercialisation of their designs so you will also be helping a talented up-and-comer get a head start in the industry. Chatting to the creators is one of the pleasures of shopping at this colourful market. AT 287 METRES above sea level,

Mt Coot-tha might be little more than a large hill, but it’s the best place to see Brisbane, from the suburbs to the ocean. Reach Brisbane Lookout by driving from the inner city on Milton Road and the winding Sir Samuel Griffith Drive. From the viewing platform, you’ll see why people have been heading up the mountain to enjoy the panorama both day and night for more than 180 years. At the lookout, take in the view with a coffee or snack from Kuta Café or indulge with fine dining at the Summit Restaurant.

The Summit Restaurant building was redeveloped in the 1980s incorporating the second Federation-style kiosk built in 1918. Today, the Summit Restaurant is an award-winning venue with a menu that focuses on quality Queensland produce, and stunning vistas. Mt Coot-tha has many different picnic spots located along the road, but J.C. Slaughter Falls at the base of the mountain is one of the most popular. Along with plenty of barbecues and picnic tables, it has a burbling creek meandering through the middle. Mined for gold between 1890 and 1950, during the war years Mt Coot-tha was a

military base and explosives depot. You’ll find reminders of this history on the walking trails that criss-cross the slopes. The western side is popular with mountain bike riders while those walking tracks are a training ground for adventurers. At the base of the mountain is the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, 56 hectares of landscaped subtropical greenery, open every day from 8am to 5pm. Entry is free and there are also free guided walks Monday through Saturday at 11am and 1pm which leave from the Information Desk. A good place to relax with refreshments is the Botanical Café. Open daily from 9am to 4pm on weekdays and 8am to 5pm on weekends, it’s located near an entrance to the gardens and has a covered deck overlooking a picturesque lake. As you stroll along the winding garden paths, you’ll discover a Japanese Garden, Bonsai House, Fern House, areas of exotic rainforest, a lagoon and bamboo grove and dedicated activities for children. The Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium was named after the Governor of the New South Wales colony who arrived in 1821 and charted an unknown southern sky. The centre’s optical star projector creates a replica night sky, and regular shows are a feature. Mt Coot-tha is a 20-minute drive by car from Brisbane’s CBD and can also be accessed by bus.

MORETON ISLAND It’s hard to believe this natural wonderland is just 75 minutes from Brisbane, with the ferry terminal located just 10 minutes from Brisbane Airport by taxi. Moreton Island is home to the world’s highest coastal dune, Mount Tempest, which offers stunning views of the surrounding area, but most people come here to feed the wild dolphins which have been visiting the Tangalooma Island Resort jetty since the 1970s. If you would like to swim with some underwater wonders, there is a snorkelling tour of the Tangalooma Wrecks dive and snorkel site, home to stingrays, wobbegong sharks and a kaleidoscope of colourful tropical fish. Friday’s on Eagle Street facing the river boasts a large outdoor riverfront terrace fronting a huge island bar and is a popular spot late in the evening until the early morning. The Waterline Restaurant has an extensive wine list and offers modern Australian cuisine. The Terrace Grill

Visit Caxton Street on game night for an electric atmosphere to enjoy the game. Tickets for the game are available via rlwc2017.com ■ Queensland Ballet will be performing “The Nutcracker” at QPAC in South Bank from 8–16 December. It’s a classic Christmas favourite. Tickets are available via qpac.com.au

■ From 20–23 December South Bank will be lit up with Christmas fireworks. The fireworks kick off at 7.45pm nightly. The best vantage points are the Clem Jones Promenade, Streets Beach and River Quay. ■ If you’re looking for some unique gifts this Christmas why not visit Brisbane’s Collective Markets in South Bank? The markets open from 5pm–9pm on Friday, 10am–9pm on Saturday and 9am–4pm on Sunday. ■ If you enjoy the Christmas fireworks, be sure to be on the river between the city and South Bank for the New Year’s Eve firework extravaganza. There will be fireworks at 8.30pm and then again at midnight. Translink public transport will be operational during the celebrations.
