VAN MORRISON’S MASTERPIECES Australia’s foremost jazz vocalist Vince Jones leads a celebration of one of rock music’s greatest performers. When The Beatles moved to psychedelic rock and Dylan went electric, Van Morrison hired New York’s finest jazz musicians and recorded two of the classic albums of that golden era—“Astral Weeks” and “Moondance”. Both albums had enormous impact on aspiring musicians and singers around the world. Vince Jones was one of them. A remarkable interpreter, Vince Jones has invited a selection of the country’s finest jazz/rock musicians to form The Astral Orchestra, to join him in this homage to two of Van’s most acclaimed albums; the magical “Astral Weeks” and the soul/jazz influenced “Moondance”. 6 January, Concert Hall, QPAC, cnr Grey and Melbourne Streets, South Bank. 136 246. qpac.com.au

Puppet People: A Snapshot of Australian Puppetry The fascinating history of puppetry in Australia is explored in this free exhibition now showing at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre. Puppetry arrived in Australia in the form of “Punch and Judy” shows in the 1840s. Since that time, a rich tradition of Australian puppetry performance has grown to encompass a multitude of styles from traditional to avant-garde, often reflecting social and cultural change. This exhibition features more than 50 puppets, and showcases just some of the people and companies who brought the puppets to life. BRISBANE Looking for something different when visiting Brisbane? An itinerary that is relaxing yet has an adventurous side? Danielle Lancaster takes us on a three-day journey around Brisbane.

THE SUN IS SHINING and the sky is shimmering blue as we arrive in Brisbane, Queensland’s capital city. As one of Australia’s much-loved cities for its climate, friendly atmosphere and array of things to do from art to nature, it looks like our plan for the next three days is perfectly designed.

Day 1

After checking in to our hotel, we stroll around the streets of Paddington, an older inner suburb of Brisbane first settled in the 1860s. Located only two kilometres west of Brisbane’s CBD, there is distinctive Queenslander architecture—houses on wooden stumps supporting wide verandas to gain the

maximum advantage of the airflow— quirky shops, great cafés and views of the city to admire. With its close location to Brisbane’s CBD, it is one of Brisbane’s booming suburbs with prices for investment properties rising over 50% in the past few years. In spring the jacarandas bloom sprinkling the streets in a carpet of purple.

While in summer, the beautiful aromatic scent of frangipanis fills the air as you meander the laneways and streets. With healthy appetites, we dine at Gambaro Restaurant (gambaro.com.au), a multi-award-winning signature restaurant, known for its fresh succulent seafood sourced from around Queensland and interstate. Moreton Bay Bugs are a local delicacy for seafood lovers along with Queensland mud crabs. For those that don’t fancy seafood, there are plenty of other dishes on offer at this awardwinning dining location.

who blinks all day and night. Other bars close by are Brooklyn Standard providing a New York-style cool and blues, Eleven Rooftop Bar which has some of the best views over the city and Blackbird Bar specialising in1920s to today’s signature riverside cocktails. Above: Yachting on Moreton Bay. Photo: Danielle Lancaster/Bluedog Photography.

Day 2

The blue skies continue as we head for a day on the bay. We charter a yacht to explore Moreton Bay on Brisbane’s doorstep. Home to two of the three largest sand islands in the world, Moreton and North Stradbroke Isles, we let our skipper charter our course. We pass fishermen, deserted islands and dolphins playing as we make our way to the Little Ship Club on the waterfront at Dunwich on North Stradbroke Island. It’s a treasure with great views, fabulous food and perfect for a glass of bubbles to toast our day’s outing. The sails are hoisted as we gently make our way back to the mainland under the breath of the wind while soaking up the afternoon sun as it dips slowly over the distant ranges in the western sky. We swap seafood for a hearty steak at Black Hide Steakhouse (blackhidesteakhouse.com.au) for our dinner. Known to feature the best of Australia’s prime beef including prime cuts from Stanbroke, considered one of Australia’s esteemed organic beef producers. All tastes are catered for, even if you don’t eat meat. For a nightcap, we venture next door to The Caxton Hotel (caxton.com.au), one of Brisbane’s oldest licensed premises, dating back to 1864, but as popular today as back in the 1800s. Check out the Fourex man on the second storey,

Day 3

Swapping the sea and streets for the air, we embark on a helicopter ride to the historical Woodlands of Marburg. This is a lesser known treasure to explore close to Brisbane. Feeling like a rock star, Ben our pilot from Pterodactyl Helicopters (pterodactylhelicopters.com.au) steers us across the valleys and hills surrounding Brisbane’s suburbs and hinterland to the homestead. There is nothing like a bird’s eye view. The heritage-listed mansion built in 1890, has a deep history along with tales of ghosts. Lunch is served overlooking the farms below before embarking on a tour of the homestead and gardens including the chapel and underground cellar—once only reserved for men folk. The history of the mansion is meticulously explained. As we learn more, we watch intensely to see any ghosts appear just to add a little spice. Unfortunately, this does not happen, though we hear the many tales of sightings. While we wonder what life must have been like for the families who made this great mansion their home, Ben ushers us back to the helicopter for our scenic ride back into Brisbane. Gerard’s Bistro (gerardsbistro.com.au), hidden down James Street is our choice for tonight’s dinner. Step into a Middle Eastern Bazaar in the heart of Brisbane for an indulgent food experience. We spend the night feasting and relating our favourite tales from the past few days Brisbane escape. South Bank Secrets

By Tiana Templeman

IT IS EARLY evening at South Bank and things are hotting up. The sound of people having fun mingles with soft jazz from a nearby restaurant and the heady scent of frangipani fills the air. Elegant fashionistas share the streets with tourists wearing t-shirts and there is no cut-off age limit for

enjoying a night out. South Bank has an excitement all its own and some of the best shopping, drinking, dining and entertainment options in Brisbane. With charming markets, excellent restaurants, alfresco bars and cultural activities galore, there has never been a better time to visit.

12 WHERE BRISBANE I JANUARY 2018 I wheretraveler.com

THINGS TO DO South Bank is well known for its swimming lagoon Streets Beach, but there are plenty of alternative activities for those who prefer to stay dry. The Gallery of Modern Art, or GOMA as it is affectionately known, has an international reputation for hosting exhibitions that are the envy of other galleries with the likes of Picasso, Matisse and Warhol drawing record crowds. Culture aficionados can also explore the more traditional Queensland Art Gallery or the Queensland Museum and Sciencentre which continues to evolve with the addition of high-tech installations. The latter is a big hit with kids of all ages. Across the road at South Bank Parklands you can take to the sky on The Wheel of Brisbane, a giant observation wheel which takes you high above the city. If you would prefer to take to the water, River City Cruises offer a range of relaxing tours which include a hop-off option so you can explore further afield. Another popular attraction with a maritime theme can be found at the southern end of the Parklands. The Queensland Maritime Museum houses historical maritime artefacts, photographs and paintings in its collection, alongside numerous vessels which you can explore, such as the World War II frigate HMAS Diamantina and the powerful steam tug Forceful. It is a hands-on museum run by passionate volunteers, many of whom are retired ship masters, marine engineers and ex-naval personnel. SHOPPING SECRETS South Bank is home to a number of eclectic creative markets. If you have an appetite for the unusual and like to browse, visit the Collective Markets, which take place on Fridays at the Stanley Street Plaza from 5pm to 9pm, Saturdays from 10am to 9pm and Sundays from 9am to 4pm. Here you can pick up handmade fashion, vintage collectibles, jewellery, homewares and furniture at affordable prices.

The Jetty.

Little Stanley Street plays host to the Young Designers Market on the first Sunday of every month from 10am to 4pm. Everything at this market is handmade by the stall holders. For many of these creative entrepreneurs, showing at the market is the first step towards the commercialisation of their designs so you will also be helping a talented up-and-comer get a head start in the industry. Chatting to the creators is one of the pleasures of shopping at this colourful market.

WHERE TO EAT South Bank has a dazzling selection of restaurants and cafés, many of which capitalise on Queensland’s love of outdoor dining. South Bank Surf Club overlooks the famous swimming lagoon and gives an inner-city twist to the traditional Aussie surf club. It is a great spot for a drink and a bite to eat on a sunny afternoon. Alongside the river there is River Quay, a collection of sleek dining options ranging from champagne breakfasts at River Quay

Fish to rustic Italian share plates at Popolo and the steakhouse sophistication of Stokehouse Q. Fresh seafood, home-style favourites and an Indonesian influence can be found at The Jetty, while Francophiles will appreciate Aquitaine Brasserie, a charming alfresco diner offering a delicious taste of France with classic dishes such as Marseille bouillabaisse. Nearby Grey Street offers an equally impressive choice of dining options. The vibe here tends to be more lively, especially at Olé, a Spanish restaurant with a dedicated sangria bar. Share plates are a feature here making this a great spot to visit with colleagues or friends. Try The Spaghetti House Trattoria if you’re in the mood for traditional Italian favourites served in a stylish but homely space. Ahmet’s is the place to go for Turkish cuisine while Torba Restaurant & Lounge offers a contemporary take on Russia’s exotic opulence with velvet drapes, glittering chandeliers and a sultry purple colour scheme. Try a selection of European wines and a variety of Russian vodkas and vodka-based cocktails, such as Kalinka and Balalaika. If you are planning a trip to South Bank, bring your appetite with you!

AT 287 METRES above sea level,

Mt Coot-tha might be little more than a large hill, but it’s the best place to see Brisbane, from the suburbs to the ocean. Reach Brisbane Lookout by driving from the inner city on Milton Road and the winding Sir Samuel Griffith Drive. From the viewing platform, you’ll see why people have been heading up the mountain to enjoy the panorama both day and night for more than 180 years. At the lookout, take in the view with a coffee or snack from Kuta Café or indulge with fine dining at the Summit Restaurant.

The Summit Restaurant building was redeveloped in the 1980s incorporating the second Federation-style kiosk built in 1918. Today, the Summit Restaurant is an award-winning venue with a menu that focuses on quality Queensland produce, and stunning vistas. Mt Coot-tha has many different picnic spots located along the road, but J.C. Slaughter Falls at the base of the mountain is one of the most popular. Along with plenty of barbecues and picnic tables, it has a burbling creek meandering through the middle. Mined for gold between 1890 and 1950, during the war years Mt Coot-tha was a

military base and explosives depot. You’ll find reminders of this history on the walking trails that criss-cross the slopes. The western side is popular with mountain bike riders while those walking tracks are a training ground for adventurers. At the base of the mountain is the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, 56 hectares of landscaped subtropical greenery, open every day from 8am to 5pm. Entry is free and there are also free guided walks Monday through Saturday at 11am and 1pm which leave from the Information Desk. A good place to relax with refreshments is the Botanical Café. Open daily from 9am to 4pm on weekdays and 8am to 5pm on weekends, it’s located near an entrance to the gardens and has a covered deck overlooking a picturesque lake. As you stroll along the winding garden paths, you’ll discover a Japanese Garden, Bonsai House, Fern House, areas of exotic rainforest, a lagoon and bamboo grove and dedicated activities for children. The Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium was named after the Governor of the New South Wales colony who arrived in 1821 and charted an unknown southern sky. The centre’s optical star projector creates a replica night sky, and regular shows are a feature. Mt Coot-tha is a 20-minute drive by car from Brisbane’s CBD and can also be accessed by bus.

vineyards and wineries, cute boutiques and stunning views, all just a few hours drive from Brisbane. Here are three of our favourite spots for a day trip. MORETON ISLAND It’s hard to believe this natural wonderland is just 75 minutes from Brisbane, with the ferry terminal located just 10 minutes from Brisbane Airport by taxi. Moreton Island is home to the world’s highest coastal dune, Mount Tempest, which offers stunning views of the surrounding area, but most people come here to feed the wild dolphins which have been visiting the Tangalooma Island Resort jetty since the 1970s. If you would like to swim with some underwater wonders, there is a snorkelling tour of the Tangalooma Wrecks dive and snorkel site, home to stingrays, wobbegong sharks and a kaleidoscope of colourful tropical fish. If you would prefer to stay dry, a Segway tour offers a unique way to enjoy Moreton Island’s pristine surrounds. THE BLACKHALL RANGES High on the Blackhall Ranges you’ll find Maleny and Montville, two pretty rural communities with an artistic heritage and a stunning ridge-top location. Montville is a popular tourist hub where galleries line the street, sitting side by side with quaint gift shops and cafés serving Devonshire tea. A picturesque 10-minute drive away you’ll find Maleny, a laid-back country town with a friendly, community vibe and excellent cooking schools. Hone your wok skills with a Stir Crazy session, cook Thaiinspired Dude Food or whip up tasty yum cha treats at a Dim Sum and Then Some class at the Spirit House. Spicers Tamarind offers classes ranging from French and Italian to bread making and delectable desserts. Nearby you’ll find Spa Anise where romantics can enjoy a private steam and spa overlooking rolling green hills prior to their treatment. NOOSA Noosa has always been known for its natural beauty and there are many ways to enjoy it. Go for a walk in the National

Park or explore the Noosa Biosphere Reserve, a series of freshwater tidal parklands covering 150,000 hectares. Noosa Everglades Discovery run serene boat tours which glide through dark tannin-stained water that acts like a mirror, reflecting the beauty of the surrounding bush. Hastings Street is a top spot for shopping with an impressive choice of boutiques and homeware stores. If you

feel like a coffee or a glass of wine, drop into Aromas Noosa where wicker chairs face outwards in classic European style and everyone comes to see and be seen. If you are after something more low key, million dollar views can be yours for the price of a drink at the Noosa Heads Surf Club. There is no better spot for a beer on a lazy Sunday afternoon and the chicken parmigiana is a delicious blast from the past.

BRISBANE, RIVERFRONT DINING

BRISBANE’S EAGLE STREET is a culinary

hot spot with its unrivalled view of the Story Bridge and Brisbane River and a selection of dining options to match. This wide stretch of water backing on to the tall cliffs of Kangaroo Point is glorious by day, but by night the whole area twinkles with lights dominated by the colourfully lit Story Bridge, which changes its hue to suit the occasion. Looking for a quick coffee or a light meal? There’s plenty of choice in Eagle Street Pier at 45 Eagle Street. Discover simple, honest food at casual eatery Jude Kitchen & Bar, fast and healthy flame-grilled burgers from Grill’d or soft and hard tacos, burritos and nachos at Mexican taqueria Guzman Y Gomez. For a post-work drink with friends or a night out on the town, try the stylish yet intimate cocktail bar Mr & Mrs G Riverbar. Named after its owners, veteran restaurateurs Andy and Marcia Georges, it is right on the river bank and adjacent to the couple’s much loved Il Centro Restaurant, home of the legendary Sand Crab Lasagne.

Spreading the fun of Bavarian bier and culture around the globe, the Bavarian Bier Café’s wide balcony on the second level of Eagle Street Pier is a great spot for business lunches, after work drinks or a relaxing dinner. There’s an impressive range of imported beers at the Bavarian Bier Café, which also offers a good selection of schnapps and wine. They are famous for their schnitzel but also have lighter options.

Pony has an uncomplicated approach to modern Australian food with a flavour-driven menu and an array of share plates and wood-fired dishes. Saké Restaurant & Bar serves up contemporary Japanese cuisine with a distinct local flavour and has an exclusive range of premium sakés imported directly from Japan. Try the Otsumami menu, which features small bites that are perfectly matched with delicious saké and shochu cocktails.

DINING RIVERFRONT, BRISBANE Right: Saké Restaurant & Bar.

A little further down the river at 71 Eagle Street, Riparian Plaza’s open promenade and plaza area features some of Brisbane City’s most popular waterside dining experiences, including Kingsleys Steak and Crabhouse, Riverbar & Kitchen and modern Asian delicacies at Madame Wu. The Riverside Centre at 123 Eagle Street is home to Jellyfish, Friday’s, Pig ’N’ Whistle, Groove Train, Blackbird Bar & Grill and Navala Churrascaria. Friday’s on Eagle Street facing the river boasts a large outdoor riverfront terrace fronting a huge island bar and is a popular spot late in the evening until the early morning. The Waterline Restaurant has an extensive wine list and offers modern Australian cuisine. The Terrace Grill is open for lunch and dinner, with plump juicy char-grilled steaks, seafood and innovative modern Australian cuisine. Closer to the Story Bridge, Customs House, with its grand colonnades, portico, and copper-sheathed dome, is a fine example of Victorian Free Classical style architecture, and also boasts expansive river views. Customs House Restaurant is open for both lunch and dinner. It is especially appropriate for

a leisurely Sunday breakfast available on the riverside terrace from 9am. Further afield in Toowong, the Regatta Hotel is known as the Grand Lady of the Brisbane River. Established in 1874, it has survived fire and flood and now boasts the Boatshed Restaurant, the Street Café, the Main Bar and the

Courtyard. Executive chef Daniel Fleming has designed menus which provide an innovative, broad range of dishes using fresh, seasonal produce. The choices are many but the river links them all, its banks winding through the city and creating vistas to delight diners both night and day.

PONY Standing proud on the lively riverfront, Pony Dining offers modern Australian cuisine with premier waterfront dining, leading event solutions, an iconic bar and a spacious terrace, boasting unrivalled views of the Story Bridge. A lasting impression starts with the fragrance of wood smoke and spirited chefs around a custom made Argentinean wood-fire grill serving an honest, uncomplicated and flavour driven menu. The seafood and meat are sourced from reputable suppliers within Australia. The quality cuts of meat are prepared over the wood-fired grill. Pony Dining offers seafood and pasta dishes that are thoughtfully created with seasonality in mind. The menu also features dishes designed for sharing as well as innovative vegetarian options. Upper Level Eagle Street Pier, 18/45 Eagle Street, Brisbane. Tel: 3181 3400. ponydining.com.au

LES CLEFS D’OR BRISBANE Brisbane’s Moonlight Cinema.

LES CLEFS D’OR By Jaime Lachs, C H I E F HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL from Les

Clefs d’or Queensland. I hope you all had an enjoyable time spent with family and friends over the Christmas holiday period and New Year. ■ January is right in the middle of summer in Australia, 28° Celsius is the average temperature in South East Queensland—which is where Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast, just north of Brisbane, and the Gold Coast, south of Brisbane—are located in the state. ■ Obviously a very popular activity to partake in during this time, is to venture down to one of the many beautiful beaches which line both the Gold and Sunshine Coasts, or if you are time poor and staying in the city, Streets Beach at South Bank has a small man-made beach along the riverbank looking across to Parliament House in the middle of the city. ■ Another relaxing activity is to visit Brisbane’s Moonlight Cinema, a must do event for summer entertainment. Running until the beginning of March, it is located in New Farm Park, a historic area of the city. The Brisbane Powerhouse sits as the cinema’s backdrop. The former powerhouse

CONCIERGE – RYDGES SOUTH BANK

is now a popular arts and cultural hub, but remember to bring your mosquito repellent. ■ For a uniquely Australian summer sports experience, the Big Bash Cricket league for both professional male and female cricketers has four games in January at the Gabba, the home of cricket in Queensland. The Big Bash is a modern interpretation of the game, with a lot more colour, fun and noise, aimed at families and those who don’t understand the many rules of the traditional form of the game. It is licensed between the hours of 10am and 8pm daily (excluding Australia Day, New Year’s Eve and Riverfire when no alcohol is permitted). Please note that to consume alcohol at South Bank, you must be 18+ and you must have food to accompany your drinks.
