Patricia Piccinini: Curious Affection

OUT OF THE BOX FESTIVAL

The most ambitious exhibition to date of work by Patricia Piccinini is on at Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA), becoming GOMA’s largest ever solo exhibition by an Australian artist. Known for her imaginative hybrid creatures, Piccinini uses sculpture, installation, video and sound to realise a fantastic and compassionate vision inspired by science, surrealism and mythology. Along with a survey of some of the artist’s most recognisable life-like sculptures of the past ten years, “Curoius Affection” includes a large-scale newly commissioned inflatable sculpture suspended in GOMA’s Long Gallery and culminate in a vast and immersive multisensory environment.

Playing with air, creating self-portraits and showcasing children’s connections to culture are just some of the events lined up for this year’s Out of the Box Festival, QPAC’s biennial festival for children 8 years and under. This year for the first time festivalgoers can access every Out of the Box in-theatre experience, activity, exhibition and workshop with an all-inclusive Day Pass. In-theatre experiences are held every day of the festival and include:

Air Play New York’s “Air Play” merges circus and street theatre performance art with sculptural artistry. “Air Play” is a circus-style adventure of two siblings journeying through a surreal world, transforming ordinary objects into uncommon beauty. Fabrics dance in the wind, balloons have a mind of their own, confetti turns into the night sky, and an enormous canopy of “Air Play”. Photo: © Florence Montmare. hovering silk forever alters their future.

A beautiful production recreated with New Zealand’s Red Leap Theatre Company, adapted from the award-winning novel by Shaun Tan, “The Arrival” follows the story of a man starting a new life amidst the extraordinary inhabitants of his new land. A man flees his homeland and journeys across vast seas to arrive in a strange, wondrous new world where giant ships fly through the air and curious creatures abound. There he negotiates dazzling architecture, bizarre foods and foreign tongues to build a new life. On his travels, the man meets fellow sympathetic strangers, each with their own tales to tell.

“The Arrival”. Photo: John McDermott.

Duck “Duck”, a new theatre work, is based on the book by Janet A. Holmes and illustrator Jonathan Bentley. “Duck” is a simple yet heartfelt story of friendship and love showing us that we need others as much as they need us. Through movement and live music, follow the story of a boy and his best friend as they spend every waking hour together—soaring through the air, building skyscrapers up up up— before Duck mysteriously goes missing. When the boy ventures to search for him without any luck, we’re left wondering, will Duck ever be found again?

Slapdash Galaxy This is the tale of Sam and Junior—two brothers, who must flee their barren planet, and embark on an epic quest across the galaxy. Using the contents of your cleaning cupboard, Bunk Puppets’ David Geddes conjures up astonishing lo-fi theatrical wizardry using only old boxes, bubble wrap, drinking straws, tennis balls, ping pong bats and old toys. It’s a crazy shadow puppet universe, made from bits of rubbish. 26 June–1 July, Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC), cnr Grey and Melbourne Streets, South Bank. outoftheboxfestival.com.au

“It is so easy to come across a quality lamington in a bakery particularly when going on a family drive in the country or along the coast. I have such fond memories of a morning swim at the gorge at Point Lookout at North Stradbroke and then barging into the bakery to grab a couple of lamingtons.” Queensland Day is a special day for Josh bringing back memories of when he arrived in Australia as a two-year-old with his family in 1986 to start a new life. “Spending time with family on a day trip exploring more of our beautiful city and its surrounds like catching an exhibition at GOMA would be my ideal way to spend Queensland Day.” Tracey Watkins, White Label Noba Just give Tracey some mangoes and prawns on Queensland Day, and she will be happy. “There is something purely Queensland about these foods. I relish their ever abundance at James Street Markets and Reef Seafood and Sushi and the simple preparation that they require,” says Tracey. Walking the river paths and dining in the alleyways of the inner-city hub of Teneriffe is how Tracey would prefer to spend Queensland Day. “Who can tire of exquisite river views and some of the best culinary delights around her?”

Alison Alexander, Queensland Government Food Fellow, ABC Radio presenter and RNA Judge Alison says it is hard to pick her favourite Queensland food because of the wide diversity of produce, but she also can’t go past fresh seafood. “Prawns, fish, scallops, bugs can be cooked in many ways, but it takes a lot to beat pan-fried fresh fish fillets, especially diamond scale mullet,” says Alison. A true Queenslander, Alison’s perfect Queensland Day would be to pack a picnic, pick up a cake from Three Girls Skipping in Graceville and head west to Brisbane Botanic Gardens at Mt Coot-tha. “You could also take a CityCat Ferry ride down the river to South Bank and enjoy a relaxing lunch at Stokehouse Q which has a great position on the river.”

Sofie Formica.

Richard Ousby, Executive Chef, Stokehouse Group “Give me grilled prawns with a simple dressing,” says Richard. “It’s so easy and delicious, and it suits the weather here 365 days a year,” he says. “We took a portable BBQ to the Enoggera reservoir recently and had grilled prawns for lunch, it was a beautiful day.” Jumping on the CityCat with his wife and two-year-old son and just chilling is another of his top suggestions for Queensland Day.

Sofie Formica, Channel Seven television presenter Gambaros Seafood Restaurant is where Sofie will be heading for her Queensland Day fix of the best Queensland seafood on a plate. Her suggestion for the perfect Queensland Day is a hike up Mt Coot-tha in the morning and a cold beer at the Regatta listening to live music in the afternoon. Natalie Weir, Artistic Director, Expressions Dance Company Memories of boating expeditions with her parents make mud crabs Natalie’s favourite Queensland food. Her perfect Queensland day would be near the mighty Brisbane River with a picnic in New Farm Park or lunch on the river somewhere with family or friends.

THE BLACKHALL RANGES High on the Blackhall Ranges you’ll find Maleny and Montville, two pretty rural communities with an artistic heritage and a stunning ridge-top location. Montville is a popular tourist hub where galleries line the street, sitting side by side with quaint gift shops and cafés serving Devonshire tea. A picturesque 10-minute drive away you’ll find Maleny, a laid-back country town with a friendly, community vibe and excellent cooking schools. Hone your wok skills with a Stir Crazy session, cook Thaiinspired Dude Food or whip up tasty yum cha treats at a Dim Sum and Then Some class at the Spirit House. Spicers Tamarind offers classes ranging from French and Italian to bread making and delectable desserts. Nearby you’ll find Spa Anise where romantics can enjoy a private steam and spa overlooking rolling green hills prior to their treatment. NOOSA Noosa has always been known for its natural beauty and there are many ways to enjoy it. Go for a walk in the National Park or explore the Noosa Biosphere Reserve, a series of freshwater tidal parklands covering 150,000 hectares. Noosa Everglades Discovery run serene boat tours which glide through dark tannin-stained water that acts like a mirror, reflecting the beauty of the surrounding bush. Hastings Street is a top spot for shopping with an impressive choice of boutiques and homeware stores. If you feel like a coffee or a glass of wine, drop into Aromas Noosa where wicker chairs face outwards in classic European style and everyone comes to see and be seen. AT 287 METRES above sea level,

Mt Coot-tha might be little more than a large hill, but it’s the best place to see Brisbane, from the suburbs to the ocean. Reach Brisbane Lookout by driving from the inner city on Milton Road and the winding Sir Samuel Griffith Drive. From the viewing platform, you’ll see why people have been heading up the mountain to enjoy the panorama both day and night for more than 180 years. At the lookout, take in the view with a coffee or snack from Kuta Café or indulge with fine dining at the Summit Restaurant. The Summit Restaurant building was redeveloped in the 1980s incorporating the second Federation-style kiosk built in 1918. Today, the Summit Restaurant is an award-winning venue with a menu that focuses on quality Queensland produce, and stunning vistas. Mt Coot-tha has many different picnic spots located along the road, but J.C. Slaughter Falls at the base of the mountain is one of the most popular. Along with plenty of barbecues and picnic tables, it has a burbling creek meandering through the middle. Mined for gold between 1890 and 1950, during the war years Mt Coot-tha was a military base and explosives depot. You’ll find reminders of this history on the walking trails that criss-cross the slopes. The western side is popular with mountain

bike riders while those walking tracks are a training ground for adventurers. At the base of the mountain is the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, 56 hectares of landscaped subtropical greenery, open every day from 8am to 5pm. Entry is free and there are also free guided walks Monday through Saturday at 11am and 1pm which leave from the Information Desk. A good place to relax with refreshments is the Botanical Café. Open daily from 9am to 4pm on weekdays and 8am to 5pm on weekends, it’s located near an entrance to the gardens and has a covered deck overlooking a picturesque lake.

As you stroll along the winding garden paths, you’ll discover a Japanese Garden, Bonsai House, Fern House, areas of exotic rainforest, a lagoon and bamboo grove and dedicated activities for children. The Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium was named after the Governor of the New South Wales colony who arrived in 1821 and charted an unknown southern sky. The centre’s optical star projector creates a replica night sky, and regular shows are a feature. Mt Coot-tha is a 20-minute drive by car from Brisbane’s CBD and can also be accessed by bus.

LES CLEFS D’OR BY GRAHAM HODGSON, QUEENSL AND STATE DIRECTOR

LES CLEFS D’OR INTERNATIONAL Past President: COLIN TOOMEY, The Shangri-La Hotel, Sydney

WELCOME TO BRISBANE: Australia’s

New World City! Thank you for choosing Brisbane for your overnight stay, short break or extended vacation. No matter what your reason for being here, the month of June is a great time to explore South East Queensland. ■ If you weren’t aware Brisbane is in the midst of a hotel boom. On the back of an infrastructure charges incentive, made available by the Brisbane City Council in 2014, more than 4000 new hotel rooms have since opened with an additional 1500 earmarked to open before the end of the year. And the biggest winner from all of this is you—the guest. Heightened competition will result in more competitive rates. And not only will you be spoilt for choice with brand new hotels offering world-class facilities but the existing Brisbane properties will also have to pull out all stops to fight for their share of the market. You can’t lose. 32 WHERE BRISBANE I JUNE 2018 I wheretraveler.com

■ Another exciting trend relating to new hotel openings is that many are partnering with well-known restaurateurs and restaurant brands. W Brisbane, opening 1 June, have signed on the acclaimed Three Blue Ducks (their first offering outside of NSW); Emporium Hotel South Bank, opening mid-July, have teamed up with celebrated Chef Josue Lopez (2016 Good Food Guide Chef of the Year, ex-GOMA Restaurant) and The Calile Hotel, opening September 2018, have paired up with renown Greek restaurant Hellenika (Gold Coast). It’s exciting times for Brisbane indeed! ■ While visiting this lovely city of ours, be sure to seek out the services of your hotel concierge. They’re professionals in their field and always happy to help.
