It opens this month exclusively at Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA), becoming GOMA’s largest ever solo exhibition by an Australian artist. Known for her imaginative hybrid creatures, Piccinini uses sculpture, installation, video and sound to realise a fantastic and compassionate vision inspired by science, Surrealism and mythology. Born in Sierra Leone and raised in Australia, she has exhibited extensively around the world. She represented Australia at the 2003 Venice Biennale, created the infamous inflatable sculpture “The Skywhale” for the 2013 Centenary of Canberra, and drew over a million visitors to a touring exhibition in Brazil in 2016. Along with a survey of some of the artist’s most recognisable lifelike sculptures of the past 10 years, it will include a large-scale newly commissioned inflatable sculpture suspended in GOMA’s Long Gallery and culminate in a vast and immersive multisensory environment. 24 March–5 August, Gallery of Modern Art, Stanley Place, South Bank. 3840 7303. qagoma.qld.gov.au

But the 8 March shows don’t stop there! Head to the Piano Bar from 5.30pm that day for Out of Abingdon, or to the Jazz Bar for Yas Queen from 7.30pm, in addition to the late-night jam session with the Sophie Min Trio at 10.30pm. The celebrations continue throughout March, with a number of local, interstate and international female jazz musicians taking the Doo-Bop stage. The Jazz Bar will welcome long-term friends Madeleine and Salomon from France in ‘Clotilde Rullaud’ on 11 and 12 March. This act is the meeting of two artists with well-established musical visions: the vocalist and flautist Clotilde, and the pianist Alexandre Saada. Also appearing in March will be double MOBO Award-winning YolanDa Brown, who is known for seamlessly blending jazz, soul, and reggae. Don’t miss YolanDa’s eagerly anticipated Australian national debut for her ‘Love Politics War’ Tour in the Jazz Bar from 17–19 March. Another March act is Ann Vriend, a seasoned “triple-threat” artist who’ll be performing in the Jazz Bar on 22 March. While Ann’s voice alone turns heads, she has many other qualities that also captivate audiences throughout the entirety of her shows. Finally, prepare to be blown away on 9 March by one of the world’s most in-demand jazz ensembles, namely The James Morrison Quartet. Here are eight of the city’s best sweet treats because, let’s face it, there is always room for dessert. including cherry coconut, triple chocolate, and peanut butter chip, your first visit probably won’t be your last. Even better, the I Heart Brownies kitchen is entirely gluten-free. iheartbrownies.com.au DOUBLE GOOD According to Double Good, life is too short not to have a little umbrella in your ice cream. Favourite flavours include macadamia, pina colada and the Insta-worthy Black Elvis, which blends coconut ice-cream with black activated charcoal. facebook.com/itsdoublegood DOUGHLORD If you didn’t know cookie dough was a ‘thing’, you have been missing out. South Bank Secrets

By Tiana Templeman

SOUTH BANK HAS AN EXCITEMENT all

its own and some of the best shopping, drinking, dining and entertainment options in Brisbane. With charming markets, excellent restaurants, alfresco bars and cultural activities galore, there has never been a better time to visit. THINGS TO DO South Bank is well known for its swimming lagoon Streets Beach, but there are plenty of alternative activities for those who prefer to stay dry. The Gallery of Modern Art, or GOMA as it is affectionately known, has an international reputation for hosting exhibitions that are the envy of other galleries with the likes of Picasso, Matisse and Warhol drawing record crowds. Culture aficionados can also explore the more traditional Queensland Art Gallery or the Queensland Museum and Sciencentre which continues to evolve with the addition of high-tech installations.

The latter is a big hit with kids of all ages. Across the road at South Bank Parklands you can take to the sky on The Wheel of Brisbane, a giant observation wheel which takes you high above the city. If you would prefer to take to the water, River City Cruises offer a range of relaxing tours which include a hop-off option so you can explore further afield. The Queensland Maritime Museum houses historical maritime artefacts, photographs and paintings in its collection, alongside numerous vessels which you can explore, such as the World War II frigate HMAS Diamantina and the powerful steam tug Forceful. SHOPPING SECRETS South Bank is home to a number of eclectic creative markets. If you have an appetite for the unusual and like to browse, visit the Collective Markets.

Here you can pick up handmade fashion, vintage collectibles, jewellery, homewares and furniture at affordable prices. Little Stanley Street plays host to the Young Designers Market on the first Sunday of every month. Everything at this market is handmade by the stall holders. WHERE TO EAT South Bank has a dazzling selection of restaurants and cafés, many of which capitalise on Queensland’s love of outdoor dining. South Bank Surf Club overlooks the famous swimming lagoon and gives an inner-city twist to the traditional Aussie surf club. It is a great spot for a drink and a bite to eat on a sunny afternoon. Alongside the river there is River Quay, a collection of sleek dining options ranging from champagne breakfasts at River Quay Fish to rustic Italian share plates at Popolo and the steakhouse sophistication of Stokehouse Q. Fresh seafood, home-style favourites and an Indonesian influence can be found at The Jetty, while Francophiles will appreciate Aquitaine Brasserie, a charming alfresco diner offering a delicious taste of France with classic dishes such as Marseille bouillabaisse. Try The Spaghetti House Trattoria if you’re in the mood for traditional Italian favourites served in a stylish but homely space. If you are planning a trip to South Bank, bring your appetite with you!

MARVELLOUS MT COOT-THA

By Kerry Heaney

AT 287 METRES above sea level,

Mt Coot-tha might be little more than a large hill, but it’s the best place to see Brisbane, from the suburbs to the ocean. Reach Brisbane Lookout by driving from the inner city on Milton Road and the winding Sir Samuel Griffith Drive. From the viewing platform, you’ll see why people have been heading up the mountain to enjoy the panorama both day and night for more than 180 years. At the lookout, take in the view with a coffee or snack from Kuta Café or indulge with fine dining at the Summit Restaurant.

The Summit Restaurant building was redeveloped in the 1980s incorporating the second Federation-style kiosk built in 1918. Today, the Summit Restaurant is an award-winning venue with a menu that focuses on quality Queensland produce, and stunning vistas. Mt Coot-tha has many different picnic spots located along the road, but J.C. Slaughter Falls at the base of the mountain is one of the most popular. Along with plenty of barbecues and picnic tables, it has a burbling creek meandering through the middle. Mined for gold between 1890 and 1950, during the war years Mt Coot-tha was a

military base and explosives depot. You’ll find reminders of this history on the walking trails that criss-cross the slopes. The western side is popular with mountain bike riders while those walking tracks are a training ground for adventurers. At the base of the mountain is the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, 56 hectares of landscaped subtropical greenery, open every day from 8am to 5pm. Entry is free and there are also free guided walks Monday through Saturday at 11am and 1pm which leave from the Information Desk. A good place to relax with refreshments is the Botanical Café. Open daily from 9am to 4pm on weekdays and 8am to 5pm on weekends, it’s located near an entrance to the gardens and has a covered deck overlooking a picturesque lake. As you stroll along the winding garden paths, you’ll discover a Japanese Garden, Bonsai House, Fern House, areas of exotic rainforest, a lagoon and bamboo grove and dedicated activities for children. The Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium was named after the Governor of the New South Wales colony who arrived in 1821 and charted an unknown southern sky. The centre’s optical star projector creates a replica night sky, and regular shows are a feature. Mt Coot-tha is a 20-minute drive by car from Brisbane’s CBD and can also be accessed by bus.

BRISBANE, RIVERFRONT DINING

BRISBANE’S EAGLE STREET is a culinary

hot spot with its unrivalled view of the Story Bridge and Brisbane River and a selection of dining options to match. This wide stretch of water backing on to the tall cliffs of Kangaroo Point is glorious by day, but by night the whole area twinkles with lights dominated by the colourfully lit Story Bridge, which changes its hue to suit the occasion. Looking for a quick coffee or a light meal? There’s plenty of choice in Eagle Street Pier at 45 Eagle Street. Discover simple, honest food at casual eatery Jude Kitchen & Bar, fast and healthy flame-grilled burgers from Grill’d or soft and hard tacos, burritos and nachos at Mexican taqueria Guzman Y Gomez. For a post-work drink with friends or a night out on the town, try the stylish yet intimate cocktail bar Mr & Mrs G Riverbar. Named after its owners, veteran restaurateurs Andy and Marcia Georges, it is right on the river bank and adjacent to the couple’s much loved Il Centro Restaurant, home of the legendary Sand Crab Lasagne.

Spreading the fun of Bavarian bier and culture around the globe, the Bavarian Bier Café’s wide balcony on the second level of Eagle Street Pier is a great spot for business lunches, after work drinks or a relaxing dinner. There’s an impressive range of imported beers at the Bavarian Bier Café, which also offers a good selection of schnapps and wine. They are famous for their schnitzel but also have lighter options. Pony has an uncomplicated approach to modern Australian food

with a flavour-driven menu and an array of share plates and wood-fired dishes. Saké Restaurant & Bar serves up contemporary Japanese cuisine with a distinct local flavour and has an exclusive range of premium sakés imported directly from Japan. Try the Otsumami menu, which features small bites that are perfectly matched with delicious saké and shochu cocktails. A little further down the river at 71 Eagle Street, Riparian Plaza’s open promenade and plaza area features

some of Brisbane City’s most popular waterside dining experiences, including Kingsleys Steak and Crabhouse, Riverbar & Kitchen and modern Asian delicacies at Madame Wu. The Riverside Centre at 123 Eagle Street is home to Jellyfish, Friday’s, Pig ’N’ Whistle, Groove Train, Blackbird Bar & Grill and Navala Churrascaria. Friday’s on Eagle Street facing the river boasts a large outdoor riverfront

terrace fronting a huge island bar and is a popular spot late in the evening until the early morning. The Waterline Restaurant has an extensive wine list and offers modern Australian cuisine. The Terrace Grill is open for lunch and dinner, with plump juicy char-grilled steaks, seafood and innovative modern Australian cuisine. Closer to the Story Bridge, Customs House, with its grand colonnades,

PONY Standing proud on the lively riverfront, Pony Dining offers modern Australian cuisine with premier waterfront dining, leading event solutions, an iconic bar and a spacious terrace, boasting unrivalled views of the Story Bridge. A lasting impression starts with the fragrance of wood smoke and spirited chefs around a custom made Argentinean wood-fire grill serving an honest, uncomplicated and flavour driven menu. The seafood and meat are sourced from reputable suppliers within Australia. The quality cuts of meat are prepared over the wood-fired grill. Pony Dining offers seafood and pasta dishes that are thoughtfully created with seasonality in mind. The menu also features dishes designed for sharing as well as innovative vegetarian options. portico, and copper-sheathed dome, is a fine example of Victorian Free Classical style architecture, and also boasts expansive river views. Customs House Restaurant is open for both lunch and dinner. It is especially appropriate for a leisurely Sunday breakfast available on the riverside terrace from 9am. Further afield in Toowong, the Regatta Hotel is known as the Grand Lady of the Brisbane River. Established in 1874, it has survived fire and flood and now boasts the Boatshed Restaurant, the Street Café, the Main Bar and the Courtyard. Executive chef Daniel Fleming has designed menus which provide an innovative, broad range of dishes using fresh, seasonal produce. The choices are many but the river links them all, its banks winding through the city and creating vistas to delight diners both night and day.

LES CLEFS D’OR

BY GRAHAM HODGSON, QU EENSL AN D STATE DIREC TOR WELCOME TO BRISBANE: Australia’s

New World City! Thank you for choosing Brisbane for your overnight stay, short break or extended vacation. Whatever your reason for being here, the month of March is a great time to visit Brisbane. Best of all the weather is still warm but not quite as hot as the summer months so outdoor activities become all the more bearable. I had the pleasure of meeting a lovely couple from New Zealand recently. After providing them with some local knowledge our conversation digressed and I told them of the amazing honeymoon my wife and I had experienced in their homeland several years earlier. One of the standout moments I recalled was our time spent in ‘windy’ Wellington. One morning we had gone to the local visitor information centre and picked up a brochure of a local tour guide. What resulted that day was one of the most memorable experiences we had throughout our two-week trip. Our guide was friendly, knowledgeable and had access to land that we otherwise would not have been

permitted on. He went out of his way to ensure that we had an enjoyable outing. My wife still speaks about the delicious homemade caramel slice he served up at morning tea as well as the larger than life sea lion we saw basking in the sun which our guide had sought out at my wife’s insistence. It’s moments like these that make for a memorable holiday. With this in mind I encourage you to consider booking a tour guide to not only get you around southeast Queensland but to provide you with a memorable and authentic experience. Brisbane has many exceptional tour operators for this purpose, including Prestige Day Tours, Personally Yours Tours, Eco Safari Queensland and Far Horizons: Australian Bush Tours, to name a few. It’s experiences like these that make a good holiday a great holiday.
