CIRQUE AFRICA A celebration of African colour and culture, “Cirque Africa” is a kaleidoscopic, high performance show featuring 22 energetic acrobats and dancers from six African countries. Dubbed “The Lion King on steroids”, the awe-inspiring show is high energy and highly visual, with knuckle-biting acrobatic acts, traditional comedy, vibrant dance routines and original music. 24 October–4 November, Roundhouse Theatre, 6–8 Musk Avenue, Kelvin Grove. 136 246. laboite.qtix.com.au

But the bigoted belle Dora has eyes for George, and the dastardly overseer M’Closky plots to keep Zoe and Terrebonne for himself. Today—with race still as incendiary a global issue as it was then— Branden Jacobs-Jenkins has torn apart and rebuilt the original text as a towering, immersive and wildly funny theatrical experience like no other. BAMBERT’S BOOK OF LOST STORIES
From Broadway to Brisbane, Liz Callaway is performing at QPAC for two nights only. A Tony nominee and Emmy Award-winning actress, singer and recording artist, Liz made her Broadway debut in Stephen Sondheim’s “Merrily We Roll Along” and received a Tony Award nomination for her performance in “Baby”. For five years, Liz won acclaim as Grizabella in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Cats” and starred as Ellen in the original Broadway cast of “Miss Saigon”. Liz has also established a major career as a concert and recording artist. Accompanied by her Musical Director and pianist Alex Rybeck, Liz Callaway presents an evening of songs from Broadway musicals and her various recordings.
This is the story of Bambert—an impossibly small man with an enormous love for writing. Tucked away in his quiet attic, his only companions are the characters he has created in his stories. And then one day, Bambert decides to set his stories free, to send them out into the world on little balloons, in the hope that they will find a home. The stories contain instructions: whoever finds them is to return them to Bambert with a stamp from wherever they landed, so he knows where they should be set. But as each day passes, and no stories return, Bambert’s hope begins to fade. Will his stories ever find a home? In this delightfully theatrical production Reinhardt Jung’s internationally lauded novel is brought to life in an inventive and enchanting production for children and adults alike. 11–15 October, Playhouse, cnr Grey and Melbourne Streets, South Bank. 136 246. qpac.com.au

WANT TO SIT DOWN TO a meal that would put a smile on a food critic’s face? These are the Brisbane restaurants that consistently win favour with food reviewers resulting in hats, awards and plenty of praise. At the top of the pile and firmly entrenched amongst Brisbane’s food royalty come two inner-city restaurants, Esquire and Urbane. Esquire follows chef/owner Ryan Squires’ food visions, which include treats such as buffalo jerky and house made salami. The menu is dependent on what the market produces each day. At Urbane, chef/joint owner Alejandro Cancino also works with seasonal produce, using little-known ingredients sourced from local suppliers to delight diners. With an eye on environmental impact, Urbane also grows herbs and has a beehive on the roof. Menus are five or seven courses, omnivore or herbivore. Aria makes the most of its enviable Brisbane River location on Eagle Street Pier, offering upscale dining with a Matt Moran touch. Its seasonal menu marries exquisite flavours such as Moreton Bay bugs with shiitake mushrooms and seaweed butter or short ribs of smoked veal paired with beetroot and horseradish. Pitched at adventurous eaters, Gauge moves to its own beat, combining kimchi paste and black cabbage with avocado on sourdough for breakfast. It’s sleek and modern with more room for walk-ins than most, but demands credit card security for bookings with a $40 fee per person for late cancellations. Brisbane’s river never looked better than from the bar balcony at Stokehouse Q with a cocktail in hand, but it’s the restaurant which has garnered critics’ attention. Other Brisbane restaurants that make the must-try list include Bacchus at Rydges Hotel, South Brisbane, Blackbird Bar & Grill on the waterfront at Eagle Street, and Black Hide Steakhouse for some of Brisbane’s best steaks. MARVELLOUS MT COOT-THA
By Kerry Heaney
AT 287 METRES above sea level,
Mt Coot-tha might be little more than a large hill, but it’s the best place to see Brisbane, from the suburbs to the ocean. Reach Brisbane Lookout by driving from the inner city on Milton Road and the winding Sir Samuel Griffith Drive. From the viewing platform, you’ll see why people have been heading up the mountain to enjoy the panorama both day and night for more than 180 years. At the lookout, take in the view with a coffee or snack from Kuta Café or indulge with fine dining at the Summit Restaurant.
The Summit Restaurant building was redeveloped in the 1980s incorporating the second Federation-style kiosk built in 1918. Today, the Summit Restaurant is an award-winning venue with a menu that focuses on quality Queensland produce, and stunning vistas. Mt Coot-tha has many different picnic spots located along the road, but J.C. Slaughter Falls at the base of the mountain is one of the most popular. Along with plenty of barbecues and picnic tables, it has a burbling creek meandering through the middle. Mined for gold between 1890 and 1950, during the war years Mt Coot-tha was a
military base and explosives depot. You’ll find reminders of this history on the walking trails that criss-cross the slopes. The western side is popular with mountain bike riders while those walking tracks are a training ground for adventurers. At the base of the mountain is the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, 56 hectares of landscaped subtropical greenery, open every day from 8am to 5pm. Entry is free and there are also free guided walks Monday through Saturday at 11am and 1pm which leave from the Information Desk. A good place to relax with refreshments is the Botanical Café. Open daily from 9am to 4pm on weekdays and 8am to 5pm on weekends, it’s located near an entrance to the gardens and has a covered deck overlooking a picturesque lake. As you stroll along the winding garden paths, you’ll discover a Japanese Garden, Bonsai House, Fern House, areas of exotic rainforest, a lagoon and bamboo grove and dedicated activities for children. The Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium was named after the Governor of the New South Wales colony who arrived in 1821 and charted an unknown southern sky. The centre’s optical star projector creates a replica night sky, and regular shows are a feature. Mt Coot-tha is a 20-minute drive by car from Brisbane’s CBD and can also be accessed by bus.

Head out from the city and discover these fantastic destinations. By Tiana Templeman Moreton Island. Photo: Tourism and Events Queensland.
DISCOVER REGIONAL PRODUCE, vineyards and wineries, cute
boutiques and stunning views, all just a few hours drive from Brisbane. Here are three of our favourite spots for a day trip. MORETON ISLAND It’s hard to believe this natural wonderland is just 75 minutes from Brisbane, with the ferry terminal located just 10 minutes from Brisbane Airport by taxi. Moreton Island is home to the world’s highest coastal dune, Mount Tempest, which offers stunning views of the surrounding area but most people come here to feed the wild dolphins which have been visiting the Tangalooma Island Resort jetty since the 1970s. If you would like to swim with some underwater wonders, there is a snorkelling tour of the Tangalooma Wrecks dive and snorkel site, home to stingrays, wobbegong sharks and a kaleidoscope of colourful tropical fish. If you would prefer to stay dry, a Segway tour offers a unique way to enjoy Moreton Island’s pristine surrounds. THE BLACKHALL RANGES High on the Blackhall Ranges you’ll find Maleny and Montville, two pretty rural communities with an artistic heritage and a stunning ridge-top location. Montville is a popular tourist hub where galleries line the street, sitting side by side with quaint gift shops and cafés serving Devonshire tea. A picturesque 10-minute drive away you’ll find Maleny, a laid-back country
town with a friendly, community vibe and excellent cooking schools. Hone your wok skills with a Stir Crazy session, cook Thai-inspired Dude Food or whip up tasty yum cha treats at a Dim Sum and Then Some class at the Spirit House. Spicers Tamarind offers classes ranging from French and Italian to bread making and delectable desserts. Nearby you’ll find Spa Anise where romantics can enjoy a private steam and spa overlooking rolling green hills prior to their treatment. NOOSA Noosa has always been known for its natural beauty and there are many ways to enjoy it. Go for a walk in the National Park or explore the Noosa Biosphere Reserve, a series of freshwater tidal parklands covering 150,000 hectares. Noosa Everglades Discovery run serene boat tours which glide through dark tanninstained water that acts like a mirror, reflecting the beauty of the surrounding bush. Hastings Street is a top spot for shopping with an impressive choice of boutiques and homeware stores. If you feel like a coffee or a glass of wine, drop into Aromas Noosa where wicker chairs face outwards in classic European style and everyone comes to see and be seen. If you are after something more low key, million dollar views can be yours for the price of a drink at the Noosa Heads Surf Club. There is no better spot for a beer on a lazy Sunday afternoon and the chicken parmigiana is a delicious blast from the past. wheretraveler.com I OCTOBER 2017 I BRISBANE WHERE 19

LES CLEFS D’OR WELCOMES you to
Queensland, the Sunshine State—and what a time to come and visit! Spring has well and truly sprung! This is my favourite time of year. In spring you can expect cool mornings and evenings, with clear crisp days. This kind of weather is perfect for what Brisbane has to offer this month. If you visit the City Botanic Gardens, New Farm Park, Kangaroo Point and the Roma Street Parklands during October, you will find yourself in the company of the most beautiful jacaranda trees in full blossom. These Brazilian beauties provide a picturesque backdrop to any photo so take full advantage of the time of the year, go and explore and discover just how beautiful Brisbane is! ■ This month we celebrate Oktoberfest, a festival of German culture and tradition. This event attracted over 40,000 people last year. From 6–8 and 13–15 October, the Brisbane Showgrounds play host to Oktoberfest. A family-friendly event, Oktoberfest showcases the best in German craft beer, delicious German sausages and pretzels, as well as
singing and dancing shows to keep everyone entertained. So, put on your lederhosen and dirndl and get into the spirit! For more information, visit oktoberfestbrisbane.com.au or see your hotel concierge.
a conversation with them and pick their brains; I promise you will not be left unimpressed.
LES CLEFS D’OR INTERNATIONAL
■ Rugby union fans won’t want to miss the Qantas Wallabies as they take on the New Zealand All Blacks at Suncorp Stadium on 21 October at 7pm. To secure your tickets today visit ticketek. com.au or ask your hotel concierge. This will be a sell-out event, so if you do miss out on tickets you can still make your way to Caxton Street and join in the atmosphere of a game night in this popular bar precinct of Brisbane. ■ Should you approach your concierge desk and be greeted by a member of Les Clefs d’Or, you will instantly recognise the golden keys worn on their lapels. This is a symbol that you will receive only the best advice for your stay. Members of Les Clefs d’Or are well networked not only in their city, but around the world, and can help you with any request, no matter how big or small. I encourage you to have
