Q: WHAT STOPS SHOULD BE ON EVERY VISITOR’S “BUCKET LIST” WHEN COMING HERE? A: First on your bucket

list should be to hike Crowders Mountain. If you are willing to travel about an hour or so outside of Charlotte, the breathing views are worth it. Then go to either a Panther’s NFL game or a Charlotte Hornet’s NBA game and lastly, the U.S. National Whitewater Center. Q: SUGGESTIONS FOR BEST UNDER-THE-RADAR SITES OR OFF-THE-BEATEN-TRACK THINGS TO DO? A: I highly recommend,

whether you’re a local or a first-timer in Charlotte, to go see a live performance at Blumenthal

SIX REASONS TO GET EXCITED ABOUT ARTS IN THE CITY THIS FALL

“Aladdin” flies into Belk Theater, the Symphony takes on a spooky-fun film in concert, snazzy jazz tunes rock the Booth Playhouse and so much more. This autumn brings these impressive and entertaining arts to the Queen City. Here are six of our favorite exhibits and performances to get excited about this season. VIRGINIA BROWN

TOSCO MUSIC PARTY

Blumenthal Performing Arts presents this classic tale of a pauper boy, a magic lamp and a genie with three wishes. “Aladdin” whisks you away on a magic carpet ride adventure to a whole new world, filled with exotic costumes, an Academy Award-winning score and timeless romance.

What began as small and intimate living-room jam sessions among local musician John Tosco’s friends has grown into a full-fledged nonprofit aimed at celebrating “music parties,” teaming up nationally known acts with local and undiscovered artists. As many as 1,200 audience members join in for singalongs at this event.

THE JAZZ ROOM: TRUMPET SUMMIT

CHARLOTTE BALLET: LEONCE AND LENA

September welcomes “Immersed in Light: Studio Drift at the Mint” to the Mint Museum’s Uptown location. Founded by Dutch artists Ralph Nauta and Lonneke Gordijn, Studio Drift’s exhibit explores the relationships of humanity, nature and tech through sculpture. The opening marks the duo’s first solo museum exhibit outside of Europe.

For a truly Charlotte experience, don’t miss The Jazz Room’s fall Trumpet Summit. This explosive concert features five of the region’s top jazz trumpeters taking on the classics of masters from Louis Armstrong and Miles Davis to Dizzy Gillespie and Roy Hargrove. Hosted by Jazz Arts Charlotte, now celebrating 10 years, The Jazz Room presents great music in a casual, intimate setting.

A fairytale dance that’s said to be “more Tim Burton than Disney,” “Leonce and Lena” tells the tale of a betrothed prince and princess who both flee on the eve of their wedding only to meet and fall in love as strangers. Ballet Zurich’s Christian Spuck adapts this 19th century satirical romantic comedy. Recommended for children ages 8 and up.

TRAVEL TIPS HIT THE

OPEN ROAD

TRAVELING WITH PETS •Get up-to-date vet records and carry them with you; you may be asked to produce these at any time (the rabies vaccination record is an absolute must).

•Line your pet’s carrier with a comfy blanket or pad and bring along a favorite toy; make sure they’ve relieved themselves before loading them in.

•If you’re traveling to an unfamiliar area, ask your vet to recommend a vet in that location. Research the pet ERs in the area as well.

•Fill a backpack with necessities such as pee pads, poop bags, paper plates, plastic bowls and wet food (must follow the liquids rule for carry-ons) when traveling by plane. If traveling by car, bring cats a disposable litter box for every day of the trip.

•Have your pet microchipped. Be sure to provide two current phone numbers as your contact information and upload a photo of your pet. •Make sure your pet wears a collar and tag imprinted with your name and phone number, as well as a temporary travel tag with your destination phone. •Ask your vet if sedatives are an option for your pet.

•Make sure your hotel accepts pets, and call ahead to verify the pet policy. When you arrive, inform them about your pet and ask about the nearest relief areas. •Always keep the “do not disturb” sign on your hotel room door when your pet is out of its carrier.

•Keep your pet in its carrier any time you are not in your hotel room, but if you know you’re going to be in petfriendly areas, take them along.

FOLLOW OUR ADVICE FOR A SMOOTH TRAVEL EXPERIENCE FOR PETS AND THEIR PARENTS

•If traveling by plane, book a direct flight whenever possible. Unless your pet is small enough to ride under your seat, it’s best to avoid air travel with your pets. •Check with the airlines far in advance to see if they have any species and breed restrictions. •Know the regulations for traveling with support animals. •Never leave your pet alone in a parked vehicle, no matter the weather. •Be a responsible pet parent and always clean up after your pet.
