SCOTT ROUCH Editor, WhereTraveler Dallas-Fort Worth @wheretraveler
Has the holiday season officially started in Dallas-Fort Worth until the Cowboys have played on Thanksgiving Day? This year they play host to the Buffalo Bills on Nov. 28 at 4:30 pm, allowing time for the big meal of the day to have settled. What Eric Moreno discovers is that the holiday spirit is alive and on display across the area, well before the Cowboys’ annual contest. Read on to discover when and where you can enjoy the best of holiday lights, from Vitruvian Park to Frisco’s Christmas in the Square. We take a look at Grand Prairie to find its noted lights display begins Thanksgiving night, where to find Mexican and Tex-Mex cuisine at its finest and the top spots to shop and relax. Tradition takes center stage during the season, with classic productions you’ve known and loved being performed at venues across the Metroplex. Of course, don’t sleep on new holiday shows, which will vie to earn a permanent spot in the holiday rotation. Museums of all types are going strong through the holidays and have much to offer as well. Enjoy the rest of 2019 and we’ll see you in the new year.

Few things can both simultaneously light up a night and lift someone’s mood quite like a beautiful display of holiday lights. When these kaleidoscopes of seasonal cheer come alive, remembrances of childhood spring to mind. With the number of and types of displays, Dallas-Fort Worth certainly knows how to capture the spirit of the season. ERIC MORENO
C
hristmas light displays in the Metroplex are both big and bright and among the state’s most spectacular. Leading the way is the magnificent display at the Dallas Arboretum. The Arboretum’s lush gardens transform during the holiday season with more than one million lights that sparkle at night in the 12 Days of Christmas display. Tour the grounds as the Arboretum opens after dark and see the 12, 25-foot-tall Victorian gazebos, each themed according to the traditional holiday carol. This three-quartermile walk is annually one of the area’s best displays. It begins Wednesday through Sunday in mid-November through the end of December. In Addison, Vitruvian Park offers a walking trail winding its way around the park’s man-made lake and brightly colored Christmas lights are strung up virtually everywhere the eye can see. The lights are switched on Nov. 29 to Jan. 1. Get out there early as the park is very popular and only gets more during the season.

VITRUVIAN PARK
Another North Texas favorite holiday light spot is the city of Frisco and Christmas in the Square. The buildings along Frisco’s historic downtown square are lit up and synced to music broadcast on local radio frequencies. When you’ve finished enjoying the lights, go for a horse-drawn carriage ride or take a spin on the ice rink. Christmas in the Square runs through Dec. 31. The Texas Motor Speedway plays host each year to the Gift of Lights. Visitors literally drive through one of the largest holiday light displays in Texas, which benefits numerous local charities. The lights go up the end of November and last to the end of December. Six Flags Over Texas theme park in Arlington has Holiday in the Park, with a massive Christmas tree, more than a million twinkling lights, five holiday shows and nightly visits from Santa Claus. The holiday spirit begins in the middle of November through the end of the year.

Christmas Culture
Dallas-Fort Worth is an area brimming with culture, from statues and sculptures, to art galleries and on down to street level, where creativity and imagination run free on city walls. Cultural institutions like museums run year-round, bringing the populace the best the city, state and the world have to offer, across a wide spectrum of media. When November and December roll around, holiday lights go up, the festive spirit grows and they join in on the holiday fun, like the places listed below. BY SCOTT ROUCH

THE WINSPEAR OPERA HOUSE This is the home of the Dallas Opera, which puts on amazing shows during its season. When the opera breaks at the end of the year, the opera house gets festive. The DRUMLine Live Holiday Spectacular occupies the house Nov. 19, the Texas Ballet Theater presents “The Nutcracker” Nov. 29-Dec. 28, before the musical “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” lands Dec. 15.
THE GRAPEVINE VINTAGE RAILROAD The railroad operates a 1920’s era Victorian train 10 months out of the year, with weekends in November and December reserved for the North Pole Express. The journey to the North Pole includes a stop at Reindeer Ridge, with cookies and a mug of Frosty Chocolate Snow Milk. Once inside Santa’s Workshop, guests are treated to a Broadway-style Christmas performance.
DALLAS SYMPHONY CHORUS
GEORGE W. BUSH PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY AND MUSEUM November 20 brings Merry and Bright Night. Take pictures in the Oval Office with Santa, enjoy family-friendly activities and view the Center’s newest seasonal exhibit. “I am especially excited about our upcoming exhibit, “Holiday in the National Parks: Christmas at the White House 2007,” says Patrick Mordente, director of the George W. Bush Library and Museum. “Our museum staff has been working hard to not only take our visitors into the magic of the White House, but also to take them around the country to our majestic national parks.” Past exhibitions have included “A Season of Stories: Christmas at the White House 2003.”
SID RICHARDSON MUSEUM The museum focuses on paintings of the American West by lauded Western artists. It also plays host to special events, programs and family-focused activities. On Dec. 7, its Holiday Round Up promises a day of fun, creating holiday-themed bandanas, a scavenger hunt throughout the gallery and more.
HOLIDAY ROUND UP
DALLAS SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA CHRISTMAS POPS This is an annual tradition not to be missed. Taking place in a holiday-adorned Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center (Dec. 7-16), the symphony is joined by the Dallas Symphony Chorus for classic holiday songs and a special visit from the jolly old elf himself.
SHAKESPEARE DALLAS The group’s holiday production is the Winter Faire & Market on Dec. 7. Get holiday shopping done at Samuell-Grand Amphitheatre, also the location for Shakespeare in the Park, transformed into an old English market.
COURTYARD THEATER Home to a variety of live music styles, the theater stages “Elf the Musical,” Dec. 6-8, and “Hope in the Heartland,” a bluegrass Christmas musical, Dec. 20-22.
