he summer months are in the rearview mirror, but there’s no reason to look back as Dallas and Forth Worth always have something—and usually spectacular—planned. AT&T Stadium sees the return of football action as the Dallas Cowboys begin the quest for Super Bowl glory at home Sept. 8. The Cowboys’ home is in Arlington, the area highlighted this month. Down the road from AT&T Stadium is Arlington Backyard, a 5,000-set venue and one of the best spots to catch a concert. Top shopping options abound and there are delicious choices to made when considering where to dine. The State Fair of Texas returns at the end of September and remains one of the state’s top yearly events. Make your way to the midway for thrilling rides, catch live music and shows, interact with animals, be part of a festive college football crowd and so much more. While major sports command attention, places like the Texas Motor Speedway hosts big races, roller derby holds its own and participation in (running) races is encouraged. The next two months allow for much to do. It’s your decision what to fall into.

ave howdy to Big Tex as you enter the Fair. The 55-foot-tall cowboy wearing a 95-gallon hat has been welcoming folks since 1952, and he’s one of the Fair’s most popular selfie attractions. Climb aboard the Texas Star and get a bird’s eye view of Dallas (and on a clear day, even Fort Worth) from 212 feet up in the air. The Ferris wheel was, for a time, the tallest in North America, and today remains the tallest in Texas. Chow down on a Fletcher’s Corny Dog (or two), the most celebrated snack at an event that’s known for its outrageous fried food. Fletcher’s has been selling the famous hot dog-on-a-stick since 1942, and its top-secret formula is kept closely guarded. See the shows Music is a huge part of the Fair, with live concerts happening on five stages throughout the 24 days (and included in your ticket!). Past performers have included everyone from Ludacris to Hunter Hayes, spanning all genres and making sure the fairgrounds are never without good tunes. Drop by the Texas Auto Show, the largest new-car auto show in the Southwest, which showcases 400 of the latest models from the world’s leading manufacturers. It’s four-wheel fun for all ages, and a great stop for the gearhead in your life. Each night at 8 pm, the Esplanade reflecting pool becomes the scene of the Mattress Firm Illumination

Sensation water and laser show that features sparkling fireworks, liquid-fire fountains, dancing waters, and colorful music. Also nightly at 7:15 pm is the Starlight Parade, a procession of 10 Texas-themed floats accompanied by lively music, costumed characters, historic parade wagons and stilt walkers. Animals: Look and touch The Fair’s rooted in the culture of farming, and there are plenty of exhibitions and interactive stations to help visitors of all ages learn more. More than 5,200 students participate each year in youth events and leadership contests, and kids can get hands-on at Little Hands at the Farm, the Milking Parlor, and Big Tex’s Farmyard. Visit cattle, sheep, goats, horses, donkeys, chickens and even llamas in the barns, and cheer on the piglets running in the Pig Races. New this year After a six-year hiatus, World of Birds Show presents: SOAR! returns with an abundance of aviary info and stunning stunts. Another family-friendly show is ¡Fiestas de Marionetas!, which brings a village of more than 85 handmade marionettes to life to celebrate a fiesta of color, culture and creativity. Splashdance! combines a high-energy performance of professional dancers and acrobats performing in harmony with the Esplanade fountains.

There’s no doubt that DFW is one of the hottest spots for sports enthusiasts. Coming up behind the major franchises By Eric Moreno are a varied crop of pursuits that are becoming just as popular.
T
here is plenty to be excited about in the next few months with the beginning of three major sports. Feeding into the electricity of that charged-up sports scene, however, are sports that at first may get a passing glance. But those ones offer thrills beyond the mainstream and complete the larger mosaic. To begin with, start at the track—the roller derby track, that is. The Dallas Derby Devils are an all-female, flat track professional roller derby team that competes in the suburb of Richland Hills. Since 2006, the Derby Devils have played in front of frequent sell-out crowds at home. Consisting of five home teams—High Seas Hotties, Suicide Shifters, Wrecking Crew, Slaughterers, and Death Row Rumblers—that all do battle at the NYTEX Sports Centre—the Dallas Derby Devils offer first-class roller derby. The teams will battle it out for the championship on Sept. 14. In addition to two NASCAR races during the year, there is an event straight out of “The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift,” combining the speed of stock car racing with the skill of drift racing, returning to the Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth. On Sept. 13-14, the high-octane, high-adrenaline Round 7 Showdown of the Formula Drift
tour will thrill its Metroplex enthusiasts. This fall, there are competitive and fun running events for all skill levels. Be on the lookout for the Mavs Run This Town 5K, benefitting the Dallas Mavericks Foundation, on Sept. 7. Almost as much of a party as it is a race, the annual Night Nation Run takes place on Sept. 21 and features a live music festival and DJs throughout the course. Rounding out the season is the Don’t Quit Half Marathon on Oct. 5. Designed to raise awareness about mental health issues, the event also has a 5K and a street fair built into the festivities. The area has some of the most popular courses in the state. Leading the way are a pair of courses that uniquely tie in to the region’s sports history. In Arlington, the Texas Rangers Golf Club opened this past February and is the only course in the country to have ties to Major League Baseball. Each hole is named after a signature play in baseball; that, coupled with its scenic layout have made it a must play. Similarly, in nearby Grapevine, the Dallas Cowboys Golf Club was the first NFL-themed course to open in the U.S. Designed by famed golf architect Jeff Brauer, the course seamlessly blends into its surroundings and transports players way from the hustle and bustle of the big city.
