MUST SEE

Coming into Fashion: A Century of Photography at Condé Nast

This summer, a new major exhibition, “Coming Into Fashion: A Century of Photography at Condé Nast”, is on show at the Gold Coast City Gallery. With the publisher of Vogue, Vanity Fair and Glamour opening its archive to the public, the exhibition celebrates some of the most iconic images from the past century of fashion. Glamorous, provocative and magical, fashion imagery is associated with some of the most famous names in the history of photography, and “Coming Into Fashion” showcases the accomplished work of such photographers as Cecil Beaton, Irving Penn, Helmut Newton and Mario Testino. Curator Nathalie Herschdorfer delves into the Condé Nast archives, using her unprecedented access to millions of original prints and magazine pages to put together a collection showcasing how fashion photography has evolved over the years. Contrasting some of the first fashion photographs from the early 20th century with modern day shots, she displays examples of fashion tastes from every era, demonstrating how fashion photography—and the construction of female beauty—has changed over time. You’ll see 1920s shots of Broadway actresses, photos of some of the most recognisable figures of the supermodel era, and everything in between, including some 1940s shots which could still appear on a magazine cover today. The exhibition also includes a selection of vintage couture fashion from The Darnell Collection—Australia’s largest private collection of fashion from the late 1700s to the 20th century—and a number of events at the gallery will complement the collection, including a fashion forum and a kids’ ArtLab program centred around fashion, style

Main Beach BY JANE HODGES

Marina Mirage. Photo: Destination Gold Coast.

JUST NORTH of the busy throng of Surfers Paradise, you’ll find Main Beach—a relaxed mix of cafés, restaurants, bars, resort shopping and a choice of calm or surf beaches. It’s also home to Marina Mirage and Mariners Cove Marina—the jumping-off points for all manner of water-based tours.

THINGS TO DO Main Beach beaches are a lot less crowded than Surfers Paradise’s iconic stretches of sand. For calm, protected beach swimming head for the inside beaches of The Spit—a permanent sand spit that separates the mainland and Southport Broadwater from the Pacific Ocean. On the other side of The Spit are lifesaver-patrolled surf beaches with flagged swimming areas—the Seaway Beach (patrolled November to April), Sea World Beach (patrolled on weekends and school holidays) and Sheraton Beach and Main Beach (both patrolled all year round). You can walk, run or ride along the Gold Coast Oceanway, a 37-kilometre network of coastal pathways stretching from the Gold Coast Seaway (The Spit) to the Point Danger Lighthouse (Coolangatta).

Enjoy a family day at Sea World— one of Main Beach’s top attractions. It’s the perfect day out with dolphin and seal shows as well as the chance to see sharks, stingrays, penguins and polar bears. The Storm Coaster and an acrobatic jet ski show will keep everyone happy! There’s so much to do on the water— go whale watching (humpbacks cruise past from June to October) with Gold Coast Whale Adventures; do a four-wheeldrive buggy and Segway tour of South Stradbroke Island; sail, jet ski, jet board or stand-up paddleboard on the Broadwater, take a thrill ride with Paradise Jet Boating or see it all from the skies with a helicopter ride over the highrise skyline, the coast and islands with Gold Coast Helitours— all leave from Mariners Cove Marina. You can even learn to surf at The Spit with Get Wet Surf School. WHERE TO EAT You can mix it with the locals and experience some of the coast’s best bars and dining on Tedder Avenue. When your watch says cocktail o’clock, start with a Margarita or a local Burleigh Brewing Co. beer at Bistro Chico. Settle in for some

share plates from chef Darren Baranello’s Mediterranean, Asian and Middle Eastern-inspired menu, or wander down the Avenue to Shuck for some serious people watching and some of the Coast’s freshest seafood—the sand crab lasagne is sensational! For wonderful water views, join the locals for a sunset drink at Southport Yacht Club. Get a table overlooking the moored yachts and as the sun fades you’ll see the lights of the Gold Coast twinkling over the water. The meals are great too! For casual fish and chips or freshly caught local prawns and crabs, head to Peter’s Fish Market. Outside tables overlook the fishing fleet or find a spot across the road on Main Beach. Right next door is Palazzo Versace Hotel—offering high tea at Le Jardin, casual waterfront dining at Vie Bar & Restaurant or a gastronomic adventure to remember at Vanitas. Glass Dining & Lounge Bar is known for its succulent steaks; Omeros Bros for supreme seafood in stylish surrounds; and Ristorante Fellini for the finest Italian fare. The best bets for breakfast are Providore Marina Mirage or local favourite Lark Café and Grocer on Main Beach Parade. WHERE TO SHOP High-end centre Marina Mirage offers more than 70 speciality stores (fashion, art and design, homewares and even a pooch boutique). Visit Mariora for unique jewellery featuring Australian Opals. For designer shoes, bags and accessories you can’t go past Maryon’s on Tedder Avenue. They stock international designer labels including Emilio Pucci, Kenzo, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Marni, Nicholas Kirkwood and Sonia Rykiel. GETTING AROUND Travel around the area via the G:link, the Gold Coast’s easy to use light rail network. SURFSIDE SOPHISTICATION BEST

sums up Broadbeach, nestled between Surfers Paradise and Mermaid Beach. Dotted with high-rise apartments and hotels, it’s the spot where locals choose to eat, play and shop. Its golden surf beaches are popular with surfers and sun seekers, but there’s plenty to do in this laid-back locale. WHERE TO SHOP Shoppers love Broadbeach, and with good reason. You’ll find more than 400 stores (with many fashion labels) at Pacific Fair and great boutiques in the Oasis Shopping Centre on Broadbeach Mall. Darjé, at the Oasis Shopping Centre, is home to unique jewellery designs made using Diamond Fusion and natural diamonds set in 9ct or 18ct gold. Their collection is designed and

handcrafted in Australia by master jeweller Robert Hain. For more resort fashion, homewares and cool cafés where you can catch your breath between purchases, head to Surf Parade and the ‘it’ precinct, Oracle Boulevard. On Oracle, slam down a lychee and coconut granita and a choc–banana pizza at Max Brenner Chocolate Bar or linger over great coffee and lunch at holein-the wall No Name Lane. DINING OUT There are so many places to eat, from relaxed beachside cafés to upscale fine diners. Kurrawa Surf Club has some of the best surf views and quality dining you’ll find on the coast, but keep in mind it’s where the locals eat—especially families— so it’s often busy especially around sunset.

Just a stone’s throw from central Broadbeach, The Star Gold Coast’s Kiyomi serves a modern yet distinctly Japanese menu, earning it a prestigious Chef’s Hat at the 2016 and 2017 Brisbane Times Good Food Guide Awards. There are many other dining and entertainment options there too! Chef Sam Moore will take you on a sensory dining journey at Sofitel Gold Coast’s Room81. Strap yourself in! Caught ‘N Cooked is a low-key fish and chip café—be warned, Friday nights you can wait 30 minutes for your order, so be prepared! Try the Greek calamari and the tempura whiting fillets… delish! Yellowfin are famous for their generous seafood platters. Book an outside table to enjoy the sea breeze. For mouth-watering Italian meals, locals flock to Mario’s Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria. Enjoy delicious seafood, steak, pasta and pizza right near the beach. If you’re after fresh sustainable seafood, healthy breakfasts or a delicious all day menu, head to Beachside Pavilion, a new haven for foodies and fun lovers.

THE COOLEST END OF THE GOLD COAST BY KERRY HEANEY

HOME TO SOME OF the Gold Coast’s most famous surfing spots, relaxed Coolangatta is lined with white sand beaches flanked by tall Norfolk pines. It was named after the schooner Coolangatta, wrecked there in 1846, and is the most southern suburb of City of Gold Coast sharing the border with New South Wales. For some of the Gold Coast’s best surfing conditions, head to Kirra Beach, Snapper Rocks or Rainbow Bay, but you might also want to try throwing in a line to catch snapper, bream or tailor. There’s also plenty of whale watching opportunities from the heights of Point Danger. With all that sand activity you will work up an appetite. BEHIND THE GOLD

Inland from the towering skyscrapers and world-famous surfing beaches is a tranquil wonderland of rainforests, waterfalls and charming small villages. By Danielle Lancaster. The Natural Bridge, Springbrook National Park. Photo: DestinationGold GoldCoast. Coast. Photo: Samuel Lindsay/Destination

WELCOME TO TAMBORINE Mountain, home to Queensland’s oldest national park and the third oldest in the world. In less than an hour from the Gold Coast’s surf and sand you can be in the midst of one of the area’s hinterland gems. Tamborine Mountain, rising over 500 metres, is the first hill behind the Gold Coast, giving it the ‘Green behind the Gold’ status. This is the most northern section of the great volcanic caldera of Mt Warning and forms part of ‘Australia’s Green Cauldron’, an Australian National Landscape of Significance. Tamborine Mountain National Park consists of different sections. The Witches Falls Section, with its grassy picnic areas

surrounded by a natural greenhouse, was the first section declared in 1908. Since then 13 sections have been added. There’s Joalah, Cedar Creek, The Knoll, Palm Grove and MacDonald to name a few. For a wheelchair/pram friendly walk consider Esme Street Environmental Park—a community rainforest maintained area. The short Curtis Falls walk in the Joalah Section of the national park is easy and if you can only fit in one walk, choose this one. Just above the top of Curtis Falls is the iconic Curtis Falls Corner shopping precinct. Consisting of a wonderful array of stores, no visit to Tamborine Mountain is complete without taking home a souvenir of your tour. Australia is world renowned for its gem quality opals, and a visit to the Australian

Outback Opals showroom won’t disappoint. With impressive opal cutting on site, you can immerse yourself in the beauty of opals and opal jewellery, and take home an exquisite piece for yourself or a loved one. What better way to make lasting and irreplaceable memories than with the gift of opal. A great place to refuel before you start your walk to Curtis Falls is Crema Lovers café. Recognised as the number one place for great coffee on Tamborine Mountain on Beanhunter, this café offers a lovely vista from the sunny verandah where you can enjoy delicious treats, light meals and of course great coffee. If you’re brave you too can soar like a bird doing a tandem jump with South East Queensland Hanggliding. It’s also the perfect location to watch the sunset. The Gold Coast’s hinterland is recognised as one of the most biodiverse regions in Australia. Its subtropical rainforests harbour a huge number of rare and endangered animals and plants. Over 170 species of birds have been recorded, and numerous frogs, insects, reptiles and intriguing fungi can be seen by those with an eager eye. Today’s visitors can experience not only natural but also man-made treasures. There are award-winning restaurants, artisan’s studios, shopping for antiques and knickknacks at quaint outlets and quirky mountain markets. Plus roadside stalls, wineries, distilleries and local events. Gallery Walk is the tourist hub of the mountain with its diverse collection of stores offering

everything from fudge to soap to art to clothes to fortune telling. Attractions worth adding to your list include Tamborine Mountain Distillery and Thunderbird Park where you can dig for thunder eggs. Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk is a unique eco-adventure which has elevated walkways in the beautiful rainforest canopies. It is set in a magical 30 acres of privately owned rainforest and the walk takes approximately 45 minutes at a leisurely pace. The entire walk totals 1.5 kilometres and is a combination of forest floor trails, 300 metres of high-tech steel bridges and a 40-metre cantilever bridge that soars a breathtaking 30 metres above the creek and rainforest below. Another popular thing to do is to see glowworms. Do a tour at night into the National Park to see them in their natural habitat or visit the man-made Glow Worm Caves at Cedar Creek Estate where you can see the nocturnal glowworms during the day in realistic underground chambers. All of this adventure does work up an appetite, and Songbirds is an excellent place for lunch. This multi-award winning restaurant is set in a private rainforested retreat and has accommodation available. It is very popular so it’s best to book ahead. For something less formal, The Botanic Garden is perfect for a picnic and is popular for all ages. The garden has a

rainforest walk, Japanese Garden, Orchid House and quaint stone bridge over the lake. Foodies who want to cook their own will not be disappointed. There are numerous road stalls selling organically grown produce dotted around the mountain and many fine dining options boasting award-winning chefs. The Green Shed, where the locals take their excess produce for sale, is open Sundays from 7am at the showgrounds. Whether you come for a day trip or stay for a few days, Tamborine Mountain, shrouded in its rainforest blanket, will win over your heart. LES CLEFS D’OR

CHEF CONCIERGE, SOFITEL GOLD COAST BROADBEACH

INTERNATIONAL Past President: COLIN TOOMEY,

WELCOME TO THE Gold Coast. On

behalf of Derek Fenn, Marriott Surfers Paradise Resort; Christian Espino, InterContinental Sanctuary Cove; Nicholas Fisher, Palazzo Versace Gold Coast and myself, we look forward to helping you enjoy our patch of paradise. Les Clefs d’Or is a worldwide society of professional concierge. Founded in Paris, France in the early 1950s, we are a unique society of like-minded individuals striving to deliver service to the traveller. The parameters of legal and moral are the guidelines we work under, so the scope of which we are able to deliver is left up to your imagination. The Gold Coast is full of wonderful restaurants, cafés and bars as well as being known as Australia’s theme park capital. The Hinterland offers visitors a number of nature experiences and exposure to natural beauty or, as we like to call it, the ‘Green Behind the Gold’.

Sun, sand and surf are three words that pretty much sum us up! We are not called the Gold Coast and Surfers Paradise for nothing. Our beaches are some of the best in the world; constant warm temperatures all year round make us the envy of the southern states. Remember to swim between the flags, as the motto goes ‘if we can’t see you we can’t save you.’ It is an exciting time on the Coast with all the construction of new facilities for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games as well as Jupiters Casino, Pacific Fair Shopping Centre and our new light rail, which all play a part in making the Gold Coast one of the most liveable cities in Australia. Relax, take a deep breath and enjoy. Keep an eye out for our golden crossed keys and make sure you introduce yourself.
