Animal Paradise THE GOLD COAST IS a spectacular location to meet some of Australia’s very unique wildlife. Its golden surf beaches are popular with surfers and sun seekers, but there’s plenty to do in this laid-back locale. WHERE TO SHOP Shoppers love Broadbeach, and with good reason. You’ll find more than 400 stores (with many fashion labels) at Pacific Fair and great boutiques in the Oasis Shopping Centre on Broadbeach Mall. For more resort fashion, homewares and cool cafés where you can catch your breath between purchases, head to Surf Parade and the ‘it’ precinct, Oracle Boulevard. THINGS TO DO Main Beach beaches are a lot less crowded than Surfers Paradise’s iconic stretches of sand. For calm, protected beach swimming head for the inside beaches of The Spit—a permanent sand spit that separates the mainland and Southport Broadwater from the Pacific Ocean. On the other side of The Spit are lifesaver-patrolled surf beaches with flagged swimming areas—the Seaway Beach (patrolled November to April), Sea World Beach (patrolled on weekends and school holidays) and Sheraton Beach and Main Beach (both patrolled all year round). You can walk, run or ride along the Gold Coast Oceanway, a 37-kilometre network of coastal pathways stretching from the Gold Coast Seaway (The Spit) to the Point Danger Lighthouse (Coolangatta). Enjoy a family day at Sea World— one of Main Beach’s top attractions. It’s the perfect day out with dolphin and seal shows as well as the chance to see sharks, stingrays, penguins and polar bears. The Storm Coaster and an acrobatic jet ski show will keep everyone happy!

When your watch says cocktail o’clock, start with a Margarita or a local Burleigh Brewing Co. beer at Bistro Chico. Settle in for some share plates from chef Darren Baranello’s Mediterranean, Asian and Middle Easterninspired menu, or wander down the Avenue to Shuck for some serious people watching and some of the Coast’s freshest seafood— the sand crab lasagne is sensational! For wonderful water views, join the locals for a sunset drink at Southport Yacht Club. Get a table overlooking the moored yachts and as the sun fades you’ll see the lights of the Gold Coast twinkling over the water. The meals are great too! HOME TO SOME OF the Gold Coast’s most famous surfing spots, relaxed Coolangatta is lined with white sand beaches flanked by tall Norfolk pines. It was named after the schooner Coolangatta, wrecked there in 1846, and is the most southern suburb of City of Gold Coast sharing the border with New South Wales. For some of the Gold Coast’s best surfing conditions, head to Kirra Beach, Snapper Rocks or Rainbow Bay, but you might also want to try throwing in a line to catch snapper, bream or tailor. There’s also plenty of whale watching opportunities from the heights of Point Danger. With all that sand activity you will work up an appetite. You won’t have to leave the water views to enjoy a feed if you claim a spot on the huge beachfront balcony of the Coolangatta Surf Club. It’s a great spot for whale and dolphin watching and also perfect for a weekend breakfast. The restaurant features local produce with a range of steaks, seafood and salads. Finish your meal with authentic Italian gelato and enjoy their free Wi-Fi. The club was awarded Best Dining in Queensland at the Clubs Queensland Awards for Excellence 2016. At the tropically-styled Xenia Grill you’ll discover delicious, fresh Greek food created using a combination of traditional cooking methods and family recipes. Choose from share plates filled with fried sardines or char-grilled octopus and baby calamari, all infused with the flavours of Greece. Pick up an organic The Daily Ride coffee roasted in nearby Byron Bay and you’ll have plenty of energy to enjoy one of Xenia’s occasional Zorba the Greek dance sessions. For an Italian Trattoria experience, try Brad Nascone’s Delizioso @ the Strand. Along with favourites from his Brisbane restaurant at Bulimba, Delizioso at Coolangatta pumps out a large range of Italian standards along with new and innovative dishes using a stone hearth pizza oven. The extensive pizza menu is complemented by a wide selection of risotto and pasta, but you can also tuck in to Darling Downs wagyu and porchetta served with truffle mashed potato, apple puree and gorgonzola cream.

WHERE TO EAT A great place to refuel before you start your walk to Curtis Falls is Crema Lovers café. Recognised as the number one place for great coffee on Tamborine Mountain on Beanhunter, this café offers a lovely vista from the sunny verandah where you can enjoy delicious treats, light meals and of course great coffee. Songbirds is an excellent place for lunch. This multi award-winning restaurant is set in a private rainforested retreat and has accommodation available. It is very popular so it’s best to book ahead. For something less formal, The Botanic Garden is perfect for a picnic and is popular

for all ages. The garden has a rainforest walk, Japanese Garden, Orchid House and quaint stone bridge over the lake. Foodies who want to cook their own will not be disappointed. There are numerous road stalls selling organically grown produce dotted around the mountain and many fine dining options boasting award-winning chefs. The Green Shed, where the locals take their excess produce for sale, is open Sundays from 7am at the showgrounds.
THINGS TO DO There are so many attractions to see in the area including Tamborine Mountain Distillery and Thunderbird Park where you can dig for thunder eggs. Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk is a unique eco-adventure which has elevated walkways in the beautiful rainforest canopies. It is set in a magical 30 acres of privately owned rainforest and the walk takes approximately 45 minutes at a leisurely pace. The entire walk totals 1.5 kilometres and is a combination of forest floor trails, 300 metres of high-tech steel bridges and a 40-metre cantilever bridge that soars a breathtaking 30 metres above the creek and rainforest below. Another must-do thing to do is to see glowworms. Do a tour at night into the National Park to see them in their natural habitat or visit the man-made Glow Worm Caves at Cedar Creek Estate where

you can see the nocturnal glowworms during the day in realistic underground chambers. Tamborine Mountain National Park consists of different sections. The Witches Falls Section, with its grassy picnic areas surrounded by a natural greenhouse, was the first section declared in 1908. Since then 13 sections have been added. There’s Joalah, Cedar Creek, The Knoll, Palm Grove and MacDonald to name a few. For a wheelchair/pram friendly walk consider Esme Street Environmental Park—a community rainforest maintained area. The short Curtis Falls walk in the Joalah Section of the national park is easy and if you can only fit in one walk, choose this one.
At Hang Gliders Lookout the panorama spans across the Border Ranges, valleys and to neighbouring mountains such as Lamington. If the wind is right, keen hang gliders will be preparing and running off the grassy ledge for their descent on the thermals into the Scenic Rim below. If you’re brave you too can soar like a bird doing a tandem jump with South East Queensland Hanggliding. It’s also the perfect location to watch the sunset. Whether you come for a day trip or stay for a few days, Tamborine Mountain, shrouded in its rainforest blanket, will win over your heart.
