WELCOME

WELCOME TO THE

GOLD COAST The sparkling Gold Coast is the place to be right now. There is so much to see and do this month. There’s more to the Gold Coast than sandy beaches and theme parks as Danielle Lancaster discovers. From theatre and live music to markets and exhibitions, there’s plenty of culture on the Coast (page 4). There are a variety of fantastic activities to keep you busy this month. Turn to our What’s On guide (page 6) for this month’s must-see events, festivals and exhibitions, including the 2018 Quiksilver and Roxy Pro at Snapper Rocks and the “Across Country: Indigenous Work From The Collection” exhibition at the Gallery at HOTA (Home of the Arts). Discover the fantastic Coolangatta area. Head south from the Gold Coast and you’ll find an array of great attractions, restaurants and boutiques (page 17). Explore the hinterland and enjoy the region’s pristine natural surroundings and unique experiences (page 22). Inside Where Gold Coast you’ll find our guide to the area’s best shopping, dining and attractions. If you are also travelling north then you are in luck, as our magazine includes a comprehensive guide to the best Brisbane has to offer. However you choose to spend your time here, we hope you enjoy your stay on the glittering Gold Coast.

Culture on THE COAST Musician at Miami Marketta.

The Gold Coast is full of great arts experiences— if you know where to look! By Danielle Lancaster. THERE IS MORE than golden sandy beaches, theme parks and shopping to experience on the Gold Coast. Art of all genres is blossoming on this sunny coastal strip. There’s everything from theatre, street music and markets to exhibitions of fine art and photography and live performances. Here’s some of our top places to get cultured on the Coast:

GALLERY AT HOTA Home to more than 4,000 permanent contemporary and traditional works, the venue hosts a range of exhibitions, artist programs, films, and a variety of shows including the Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award. HOTA, 135 Bundall Road, Surfers Paradise. Daily 10am–5pm (open later

for HOTA performances). 5588 4067. hota.com.au/gallery DRACULA’S CABARET RESTAURANT A comedy theatre restaurant in Broadbeach where you mix with demons, vampires and other bizarre characters in a crazy but fun show that incorporates a little of everything: singing, dancing, music and fabulous performances. You’ll need to book in advance to enjoy the threecourse banquet and show. There is a choice of main meals and for desert, we highly recommend the ‘Death by Chocolate’. 1 Hooker Boulevard, Broadbeach. SUNDAY SESSIONS The Gold Coast has been a long-loved venue for a relaxing Sunday session listening to live music from up-andcoming bands to well-known acts. A few favourites worthy of checking out are: The Helm Bar at Surfers Paradise; Finders Keepers at Burleigh Heads; Currumbin Hotel at Currumbin; Nobbys Arc on the beautiful Nobbys Beach and the Coolangatta Hotel.

School the first and third Sunday of each month are another fabulous market. Burleigh Heads State School, Lower Gold Coast Highway, Burleigh Heads. thevillagemarkets.co ■ Miami Marketta. Miami Marketta may be home to many splendid food stalls, but it is also here that you can catch some great local musicians performing.

TWEED REGIONAL ART GALLERY AND MARGARET OLLEY ART CENTRE One of our favourite art galleries only a short drive over the border through the hinterland and picturesque Tweed Valley. The Margaret Olley Art Centre celebrates the life of one of Australia’s most celebrated painters of still life and interiors. Walking through the centre gives an insight into her home where she created most of her masterpieces. There are doors, windows and over 20,000 items from her home. The restaurant at the centre is first class! 2 Mistral Road (Cnr Tweed Valley Way), Murwillumbah South. Wed–Sun 10am–5pm. 6670 2790. artgallery.tweed.nsw.gov.au

So as you chow down on some delicious street food, sit back and relax to fantastic live sounds. There are some ticketed shows here, but at the Friday and Saturday Street Food Marketta, all the live music is free. Fri 5pm–11pm, Sat 4pm–11pm. 23 Hillcrest Parade, Miami. miamimarketta.com

ANNUAL EVENTS BLUES ON BROADBEACH MUSIC FESTIVAL Held every May this multi-day festival draws local, national and international performers to venues around Broadbeach for you to enjoy. Across Country: Indigenous Work From The Collection Gold Coast City Gallery has one of the largest collections of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art in regional Australia that has been developed through numerous donations and by actively acquiring works by Australia’s leading Indigenous artists. The collection is broad in scope and includes examples from many significant Indigenous arts communities; and features both traditional, contemporary and urban works across all media. “Across Country” is the first significant appraisal of the Gallery’s collection that seeks to identify themes, stories and connections between the many artists and works represented. Creating art as a medium of exchange and communication; human condition, kinship, history and the natural and spiritual environments will be explored through a selection of paintings, photography, prints, drawings and three-dimensional objects. Main Beach BY JANE HODGES

Photo: EDGE Photographics.

JUST NORTH of the busy throng of Surfers Paradise, you’ll find Main Beach—a relaxed mix of cafés, restaurants, bars, resort shopping and a choice of calm or surf beaches. It’s also home to Marina Mirage and Mariners Cove Marina—the jumping-off points for all manner of water-based tours.

THINGS TO DO Main Beach beaches are a lot less crowded than Surfers Paradise’s iconic stretches of sand. For calm, protected beach swimming head for the inside beaches of The Spit—a permanent sand spit that separates the mainland and Southport Broadwater from the Pacific Ocean. On the other side of The Spit are lifesaver-patrolled surf beaches with flagged swimming areas—the Seaway Beach (patrolled November to April), Sea World Beach (patrolled on weekends and school holidays) and Sheraton Beach and Main Beach (both patrolled all year round). You can walk, run or ride along the Gold Coast Oceanway, a 37-kilometre network of coastal pathways stretching from the Gold Coast Seaway (The Spit) to the Point Danger Lighthouse (Coolangatta).

Enjoy a family day at Sea World— one of Main Beach’s top attractions. It’s the perfect day out with dolphin and seal shows as well as the chance to see sharks, stingrays, penguins and polar bears. The Storm Coaster and an acrobatic jet ski show will keep everyone happy! There’s so much to do on the water— go whale watching (humpbacks cruise past from June to October) with Gold Coast Whale Adventures; do a four-wheeldrive buggy and Segway tour of South Stradbroke Island; sail, jet ski, jet board or stand-up paddleboard on the Broadwater, take a thrill ride with Paradise Jet Boating or see it all from the skies with a helicopter ride over the highrise skyline, the coast and islands with Gold Coast Helitours— all leave from Mariners Cove Marina. You can even learn to surf at The Spit with Get Wet Surf School. WHERE TO EAT You can mix it with the locals and experience some of the coast’s best bars and dining on Tedder Avenue. When your watch says cocktail o’clock, start with a Margarita or a local Burleigh Brewing Co. beer at Bistro Chico. Settle in for some

share plates from chef Darren Baranello’s Mediterranean, Asian and Middle Eastern-inspired menu, or wander down the Avenue to Shuck for some serious people watching and some of the Coast’s freshest seafood—the sand crab lasagne is sensational! For wonderful water views, join the locals for a sunset drink at Southport Yacht Club. Get a table overlooking the moored yachts and as the sun fades you’ll see the lights of the Gold Coast twinkling over the water. The meals are great too! For casual fish and chips or freshly caught local prawns and crabs, head to Peter’s Fish Market. Outside tables overlook the fishing fleet or find a spot across the road on Main Beach. Right next door is Palazzo Versace Hotel—offering high tea at Le Jardin, casual waterfront dining at Vie Bar & Restaurant or a gastronomic adventure to remember at Vanitas. Glass Dining & Lounge Bar is known for its succulent steaks; Omeros Bros for supreme seafood in stylish surrounds; and Ristorante Fellini for the finest Italian fare. The best bets for breakfast are Providore Marina Mirage or local favourite Lark Café and Grocer on Main Beach Parade. WHERE TO SHOP High-end centre Marina Mirage offers more than 70 speciality stores (fashion, art and design, homewares and even a pooch boutique). Visit Mariora for unique jewellery featuring Australian Opals. For designer shoes, bags and accessories you can’t go past Maryon’s on Tedder Avenue. up Broadbeach, nestled between Surfers Paradise and Mermaid Beach. Dotted with high-rise apartments and hotels, it’s the spot where locals choose to eat, play and shop. Its golden surf beaches are popular with surfers and sun seekers, but there’s plenty to do in this laid-back locale. WHERE TO SHOP Shoppers love Broadbeach, and with good reason. You’ll find more than 400 stores (with many fashion labels) at Pacific Fair and great boutiques in the Oasis Shopping Centre on Broadbeach Mall. For more resort fashion, homewares and cool cafés where you can catch your breath between purchases, head to Surf Parade and the ‘it’ precinct, Oracle Boulevard. On Oracle, slam down a lychee and coconut granita and a choc–banana pizza at Max Brenner Chocolate Bar or linger over great coffee and lunch at holein-the wall No Name Lane.

DINING OUT There are so many places to eat, from relaxed beachside cafés to upscale fine diners. Kurrawa Surf Club has some of the best surf views and quality dining you’ll find on the coast, but keep in mind it’s where the locals eat—especially families— so it’s often busy especially around sunset. Get there early to score a table by the window. Just a stone’s throw from central Broadbeach, The Star Gold Coast’s Kiyomi serves a modern yet distinctly Japanese menu, earning it a prestigious Chef’s Hat at the 2016 and 2017 Brisbane Times Good Food Guide Awards. There are many other dining and entertainment options there too! Chef Sam Moore will take you on a sensory dining journey at Sofitel Gold Coast’s Room81. Strap yourself in! GOLD COAST, COOLANGATTA PRECINCTS

THE COOLEST END OF THE GOLD COAST BY KERRY HEANEY

Photo: Tourism and Events Queensland.

HOME TO SOME OF the Gold Coast’s most famous surfing spots, relaxed Coolangatta is lined with white sand beaches flanked by tall Norfolk pines. It was named after the schooner Coolangatta, wrecked there in 1846, and is the most southern suburb of City of Gold Coast sharing the border with New South Wales. For some of the Gold Coast’s best surfing conditions, head to Kirra Beach, Snapper Rocks or Rainbow Bay, but you might also want to try throwing in a line to catch snapper, bream or tailor. There’s also plenty of whale watching opportunities from the heights of Point Danger. With all that sand activity you will work up an appetite. You won’t have to leave the water views to enjoy a feed if you claim a spot on the huge beachfront balcony of the Coolangatta Surf Club. It’s a great spot for whale and dolphin watching and also perfect for a weekend breakfast. The restaurant features local produce with a range of steaks, seafood and salads. Finish your meal with authentic Italian gelato and enjoy their free Wi-Fi. The club was awarded Best Dining in Queensland at the Clubs Queensland Awards for Excellence 2016.

At the tropically-styled Xenia Grill you’ll discover delicious, fresh Greek food created using a combination of traditional cooking methods and family recipes. Choose from share plates filled with fried sardines or char-grilled octopus and baby calamari, all infused with the flavours of Greece. Pick up an organic The Daily Ride coffee roasted in nearby Byron Bay and you’ll have plenty of energy to enjoy one of Xenia’s occasional Zorba the Greek dance sessions. For an Italian Trattoria experience, try Brad Nascone’s Delizioso @ the Strand. Along with favourites from his Brisbane restaurant at Bulimba, Delizioso at Coolangatta pumps out a large range of Italian standards along with new and innovative dishes using a stone hearth pizza oven. The extensive pizza menu is complemented by a wide selection of risotto and pasta, but you can also tuck in to Darling Downs wagyu and porchetta served with truffle mashed potato, apple puree and gorgonzola cream. Positioned on almost a block of beachfront land with sweeping views over Coolangatta Beach, The Strand offers one-stop dining with a range of different cuisines, price ranges and dining

styles. There’s Asian, Mexican, Italian and tapas-style restaurants, cool bars and some of Australia’s most sought-after dessert options including Nick Palumbo’s first Gelato Messina ice-creamery in Queensland and chocolatier Max Brenner. The glass-louvered facade of The Strand’s restaurant zone runs the length of the building, maximising the beachfront views. Look out for Gold Coast chef Daniel Ridgeway’s Bin 72 eatery, Black Sheep Espresso Baa’s lamb salad, Griffith Street Larder’s hand-cut chips and crumbed zucchini sliders and Passiontree Velvet’s macarons and cake. When you are finished dining and relaxing you’ll want to make the most of the glorious stretch of beach that has etched Coolangatta into the hearts of many. If you want to make sure that your body is beach ready, Esteem Medi Spa have a team of specialist laser technicians, highly qualified registered nurses and skin specialists to help you on your way. More than a day spa, Esteem Medi Spa offers a blend of medical approaches to common issues. There’s so much to enjoy at Coolangatta—it’s sure to steal its way into your heart as a return destination.

GREEN

BEHIND THE GOLD

Inland from the towering skyscrapers and world-famous surfing beaches is a tranquil wonderland of rainforests, waterfalls and charming small villages. By Danielle Lancaster. Photo: Destination Gold Coast.

WELCOME TO TAMBORINE Mountain, home to Queensland’s oldest national park and the third oldest in the world. In less than an hour from the Gold Coast’s surf and sand you can be in the midst of one of the area’s hinterland gems. Tamborine Mountain, rising over 500 metres, is the first hill behind the Gold Coast, giving it the ‘Green behind the Gold’ status. This is the most northern section of the great volcanic caldera of Mt Warning and forms part of ‘Australia’s Green Cauldron’, an Australian National Landscape of Significance. Tamborine Mountain National Park consists of different sections. The Witches Falls Section, with its grassy picnic areas surrounded by a natural greenhouse, was

the first section declared in 1908. Since then 13 sections have been added. There’s Joalah, Cedar Creek, The Knoll, Palm Grove and MacDonald to name a few. For a wheelchair/pram friendly walk consider Esme Street Environmental Park—a community rainforest maintained area. The short Curtis Falls walk in the Joalah Section of the national park is easy and if you can only fit in one walk, choose this one. Just above the top of Curtis Falls is the iconic Curtis Falls Corner shopping precinct. Consisting of a wonderful array of stores, no visit to Tamborine Mountain is complete without taking home a souvenir of your tour. Australia is world renowned for its gem quality opals, and a visit to the Australian Outback Opals showroom won’t disappoint. With impressive opal cutting on site, you can

immerse yourself in the beauty of opals and opal jewellery, and take home an exquisite piece for yourself or a loved one. What better way to make lasting and irreplaceable memories than with the gift of opal. A great place to refuel before you start your walk to Curtis Falls is Crema Lovers café. Recognised as the number one place for great coffee on Tamborine Mountain on Beanhunter, this café offers a lovely vista from the sunny verandah where you can enjoy delicious treats, light meals and of course great coffee. At Hang Gliders Lookout the panorama spans across the Border Ranges, valleys and to neighbouring mountains such as Lamington. If the wind is right, keen hang gliders will be preparing and running off the grassy ledge for their descent on

the thermals into the Scenic Rim below. If you’re brave you too can soar like a bird doing a tandem jump with South East Queensland Hanggliding. It’s also the perfect location to watch the sunset. The Gold Coast’s hinterland is recognised as one of the most biodiverse regions in Australia. Its subtropical rainforests harbour a huge number of rare and endangered animals and plants. Over 170 species of birds have been recorded, and numerous frogs, insects, reptiles and intriguing fungi can be seen by those with an eager eye.

Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk.

Today’s visitors can experience not only natural but also man-made treasures. There are award-winning restaurants, artisan’s studios, shopping for antiques and knickknacks at quaint outlets and quirky mountain markets. Plus roadside stalls, wineries, distilleries and local events. Gallery Walk is the tourist hub of the mountain with its

diverse collection of stores offering everything from fudge to soap to art to clothes to fortune telling. Attractions worth adding to your list include Tamborine Mountain Distillery and Thunderbird Park where you can dig for thunder eggs. Tamborine Rainforest Skywalk is a unique eco-adventure which has elevated walkways in the beautiful rainforest canopies. It is set in a magical 30 acres of privately owned rainforest and the walk takes approximately 45 minutes at a leisurely pace. The entire walk totals 1.5 kilometres and is a combination of forest floor trails, 300 metres of high-tech steel bridges and a 40-metre cantilever bridge that soars a breathtaking 30 metres above the creek and rainforest below. Another popular thing to do is to see glowworms. Do a tour at night into the National Park to see them in their natural habitat or visit the man-made Glow Worm Caves at Cedar Creek Estate where you can see the nocturnal glowworms during the day in realistic underground chambers. All of this adventure does work up an appetite, and Songbirds is an excellent place for lunch. This multi-award winning restaurant is set in a private rainforested retreat and has accommodation available. It is very popular so it’s best to book ahead. A dedicated Trade Show is conducted to display and exchange hotel sales and marketing materials enabling an opportunity to showcase members property and the local area. Features of the destination are cleverly highlighted to promote the travel and tourism industry. This allows concierge to experience firsthand worldly services and venues they may be called upon to recommend to guests. The Association functions as a link to enhance guest’s experiences, from concierge to concierge. The social
