ine enthusiasts will be glad to know that Hawai‘i is home to several establishments that focus on providing some stellar, award-winning reds and whites. Some hold informal classes while others allow the guest to pour their own wines from a self-serve Cruvinet. Be sure to visit any of the four—or all of them—while you’re here in the islands. Another worthy attraction is the International Market Place, which has become a desired destination for shopping and dining. From Saks Fifth Avenue to The Street Food Hall by Michael Mina, you’ll find it here in the heart of Waikīkī. And if you’re looking for places that serve savory bites and specially priced drinks, look no further than Chef Chai at Pacifica, RumFire and Búho Cocina y Cantina. Shoot down some oyster’s at Chai’s, have a bowl of kim chee fried rice at RumFire and sip on a margarita at Búho.

ISLAND VINTAGE WINE BAR
Not a traditional wine bar per se but more of a communal table (which is made of striking earpod wood), Cattleya features Mediterranean-influenced tapas paired with an impressive selection of wines from around the world.
The latest wine bar to open, Island Vintage affords guests a chance to choose from 40 different wines poured from a self-service Cruvinet system. The charcuterie and cheese boards, and spicy ahi poke bites are not to be missed.

SIP & SAVOR In other parts of the country, it’s known as Happy Hour. However, in Hawai‘i, we call it Pau Hana, a dedicated time for special drinks and appetizers. At Chef Chai at Pacifica, the gourmet menu includes fresh ahi tartar in mini waffle cones and fresh oysters served with a lemongrass-and-garlic mignonette.
Growing up in Mexico City, Arturo Silva still remembers the street food and its simplicity. “You can always tell a good Mexican restaurant by its chips Pau Hana from 2 to 6 p.m. 2250 Kalakaua Ave., and guacamole,” says Silva, 808.922.2846, www.buhocantina.com

executive chef at Búho Cocina y Cantina. “We make everything here from scratch and that includes all our sauces.” A standout is the mole poblano, which is laboriously prepared, requiring hours to reach the correct consistency. The combination of hot chipotle chili peppers, rich chocolate and a host of spices offer a layer of intense flavors. When applied to chicken wings (pictured left), the result is a tasty bocadillo (snack). Silva’s pork belly flautas and goat cheese quesadilla are two other noteworthy dishes on the happy hour menu, which also includes specials on wines, house margarita and draft beer.
