Ask the Expert YOUR CONCIERGE

Ralph Carl Junio Concierge at Wynn|Encore

Q: Tell me about one of your favorite places to send first-time Vegas visitors. A: One of my favorite places to send firsttime Vegas visitors to is the world-famous Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign at the south end of the Las Vegas Strip. It’s one of those iconic sites of Las Vegas that you will need to visit at least once, and taking a picture with it makes for a great social media profile picture. Q: Where should I eat if I want to celebrate a special occasion? A: If you are looking for a memorable dining experience, I would recommend Costa Di Mare at the Wynn. What makes this restaurant so special is that they fly in fish and langoustines from the coastal waters of the Mediterranean on a daily basis. And if you are looking to make your evening even more special, consider dining in one of the private cabanas outside. Q: What’s the must-see show in Las Vegas right now? A: “Le Reve,” hands down. There is no wonder why it has been recently voted the No. 1 acrobatic show for the eighth consecutive year in a row; it’s everything you could want in a show. It has everything from aerial acrobatics, synchronized swimming, high dives, stunning choreography and elements of fire and water. Q: Tell me about your favorite hidden gem in Las Vegas. A: When people think of Las Vegas they initially think of all of the glitz and glamour that the Las Vegas Strip has to offer. But what people don’t realize is that Las Vegas is home to some of the most relaxing and picturesque hikes at a national conservation area called Red Rock Canyon located about 30 minutes away from the Las Vegas Strip. My favorite trail there is Calico Tanks where at the peak of your hike you will have a panoramic view of the entire Las Vegas valley. Play with, train and learn to care for the bottleneck dolphins that call the 2.5-million gallon (1) Siegfried & Roy’s Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat (Mirage, 702.791.7188) home during the Trainer for a Day program. Look 15 species of sharks and 2,000 other underwater creatures right in the eye at (2) Shark Reef Aquarium (Mandalay Bay, 702.632.4555), North America’s only predator-based aquarium and exhibit. Tour the 14 exhibits, including the 1.3-million gallon shipwreck for an almost 360-degree view in an acrylic tunnel. The lions that previously lived at the MGM Grand’s habitat now have a home at the (3) Lion Habitat Ranch (382 Bruner Ave., Henderson, 702.595.6666). The lion sanctuary features cats from three weeks to 20 years old.

Get your thrills on more than 25 rides—including two roller coasters—at the 5-acre, indoor amusement park (1) Adventuredome (Circus Circus, 702.794.3939). Canyon Blaster is the world’s only indoor double-loop, double-corkscrew roller coaster, speeding at 55 mph, while El Loco ascends 90 feet before dropping. (2) The Roller Coaster at NY-NY (New York-New York, 702.740.6616) offers negative Gs that take you past the replicated New York City skyline. Rides sit atop the observation tower at the (3) Stratosphere (702.383.5210). The thrill rides include Big Shot, which launches riders 160 feet to the tallest point in the city, X-Scream, which travels 30 feet off the edge of the tower at 30 mph and Insanity with an inverted centrifuge that spins you 64 feet over the edge of the tower.

Abracadabra. Magic played a part of the city‘s entertainment scene starting back in 1947 when Jack Kodell performed with parakeets in “Fantasy in Birds” at the El Rancho Vegas. To get in on the magical acts, check out (1) Mac King Comedy Magic (Harrah’s, 702.777.2782), which offers side-splitting comedy and magic from the man adored by adults and children. Don’t be fooled by the plaid attire. (2) Mat Franco (The Linq, 702.777.2782) features a fresh, fun and feelgood take on magic that defies all expectations, from the Season 9 winner of “America’s Got Talent.” For something a bit more mystical, try (3) Paranormal: The Mind-Reading Magic Show (Bally’s, 702.777.2782), where mentalist Frederic Da Silva wows audiences by revealing their innermost thoughts.
