No trip to Las Vegas is complete without taking in the views of the Strip and surrounding mountains. To the west, see the Spring Mountains and the Red Rock Range while the Sheep Range sits to the north/ northwest. More due north is the Las Vegas Range, while Sunrise and Frenchman Mountains, divided by a pass, capture the sun as it rises in the east. Southeast of the basin, separating some Henderson, sits the North McCullough Range and more due south from the basin lies the South McCullough Range a bit further away. But where to get a panaramic view of these natural wonders? These six places let you see the beauty of the Las Vegas Valley. STRATOSPHERE Head to the top of the tallest freestanding observation tower in United States at 1,149 feet for spectacular 360-degree views of the city. Want more than a view? INSIDER’S GUIDE

The Hidden Gems

Even in a city like Las Vegas, there’s more to discover than meets the eye. We chatted with some of the top concierges in Las Vegas to find out about some of their favorite hidden gems.

Red Rock Canyon

Neon Museum

Bellagio Conservatory Battista’s Hole in the Wall

KRISTI AMUNDSON, CONCIERGE AT THE CROMWELL Some of my favorite hidden gems include Valley of Fire, Nevada’s first state park; the Springs Preserve with the Nevada State Museum, a botanical garden and a butterfly habitat; and the Bellagio Conservatory. TINA MCCONNELL, CONCIERGE AT THE WESTIN LAS VEGAS The Neon Museum. It’s not really hidden but I definitely think it’s underrated. This is perfect for anyone because the pictures are great and who doesn’t want a good Instagram photo to post about your vacation. You get to see

all the classic Vegas hotel signs and get great photo ops while you’re there. JONES TANTOCO, CONCIERGE AT THE DELANO Any true hidden gem will be just a bit off the Strip. Herbs & Rye has amazing steaks, cocktails and one of the best happy hours in town. Totally worth the drive. RALPH CARL JUNIO, WYNN LAS VEGAS CONCIERGE When people think of Las Vegas they initially think of all of the glitz and glamour that the Las Vegas Strip has to offer. But what people don’t realize is that Las Vegas is

16 W H E R E L A S V E G A S I O C TO B E R 2018

home to some of the most relaxing and picturesque hikes at a national conservation area called Red Rock Canyon, located about 30 minutes away from the Las Vegas Strip. My favorite trail there is Calico Tanks, where at the peak of your hike you will have a panoramic view of the entire Las Vegas valley.

It’s a very quaint restaurant that serves classic gourmet French food.

MARCEY ESSES, CONVENTION SPECIALIST AT MORRIS VISITOR PUBLICATIONS My hidden gem would be Pamplemousse on Sahara Avenue near the Stratosphere. This hidden gem outshines the area it’s located.

JASMYN LAM, WYNN LAS VEGAS CONCIERGE Battista’s Hole In The Wall. I like the old-time Las Vegas atmosphere, memorabilia and enjoy the authentic Italian food and especially the free house wine with dinner.

MARK MILLER, CONCIERGE AT MANDALAY BAY AND THE DELANO Andiamo Italian Steakhouse serves some of the most amazing, delicious food in Las Vegas. Check it out at The D.

Ask the Expert YOUR CONCIERGE

Alan De Leon Aria Tower Suites Representative

Q: Tell me about one of your favorite places to send first-time Vegas visitors. A: I think the observation deck at the Stratosphere is a must for any first-time visitors. The views are totally worth venturing to the very top of the tower to get a better perspective of the Las Vegas Strip and the valley that you might otherwise not even realize was there if you stay in your hotel room. Q: Tell me about your favorite hidden gem in Las Vegas. A: Located about 40 minutes from the Strip, Boulder City, Nevada, was once home to the people working on the Hoover Dam. The historic downtown features great antique shops, “mom and pop” restaurants with al fresco seating, and even a restored movie theater from the 1930s. Q: Where should I eat if I want to celebrate a special occasion? How hard is it to get a reservation while I’m in Las Vegas? A: Carbone at Aria is a fantastic destination for a special occasion, however, do plan ahead of time, since reservations here are usually limited. Picasso at Bellagio by chef Julian Serrano features fantastic seating right next to the Bellagio Fountains lake. As always, it is best to make arrangements with concierge prior to your arrival, but we are usually able to secure reservations at the time of check-in. Q: What’s the must-see show in Las Vegas right now? A: Any of the Cirque du Soleil shows are a staple of Las Vegas entertainment, but “The Beatles LOVE” at The Mirage has got to be my favorite. “Opium” at Cosmopolitan is a new show for those into over-the-top comedy and science fiction, and features a great live band.

Las Vegas Your Way

Foodie From those that offer unlimited caviar to strictly seafood and succulent meat selections, Las Vegas buffets are a food-lover’s delight. Here’s what makes these top buffets great. (1) Baccanal Buffet (Caesars Palace, 702.731.7928 ) delivers a feast with nine serving stations that offer options such as prime rib, crab legs and sashimi along with 15 daily specials. (2) The Buffet at Wynn (Wynn, 702.770.3340) serves seemingly flawless cuisine in this enchanted room. Diners find 15 live-action cooking stations spanning carvings to seafood and more than 120 dishes. The true gourmand experience at (2) Wicked Spoon (The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, 702.698.7870) offers multi-cultural cuisine served up tapas-style in individual portions. Look for the bone marrow. 56 W H E R E L A S V E G A S I O C T O B E R 2018

Thrills There’s a chill in the air—indoors and out. Check out these favorite fall things to do in Las Vegas: discover haunted attractions and shows that are a scream. The provocative magician (1) Criss Angel: Mindfreak (Luxor, 702.262.4400) brings his most spectacular and original illusions to the stage in some of his final shows at the Luxor. Celebrate all things predator at the 1.6 million-gallon (2) Shark Reef Aquarium (Mandalay Bay, 702.632.4555) that features more than 30 species of sharks. (3) Zak Bagans’ The Haunted Museum (600 E. Charleston Blvd., 702.444.0744) features creepy winding hallways and secret passages into more than 30 rooms filled with paranormal pieces such as the Dybbuk Box, known as the world’s most haunted object.

Show Lovers Magic played a part of the city‘s entertainment scene starting back in 1947 when Jack Kodell performed with parakeets in “Fantasy in Birds” at the El Rancho Vegas. Now nearly a dozen magic shows line the Strip, each with their own brand of mysticism. (1) Paranormal: The Mind-Reading Magic Show (Bally’s, 702.777.2782) stars Frederic Da Silva, who wows audiences by revealing their innermost thoughts. (2) Penn & Teller’s creative performances are loaded with equal parts magic, theatrics and pitch-black comedy (Rio, 702.777.2782). They even reveal how they do some illusions, but you still won’t get it. (3) Piff The Magic Dragon (Flamingo, 702.733.3333) was an “America’s Got Talent” standout who has a magic chihuahua as his assistant.
