Recognized as one of the best dive spots in the world, Molokini is a crescent-shaped islet.

meccas and locales on Maui, Molokini has an origin story. According to Hawaiian legends, Molokini was a mortal woman of great beauty who happened to be attracted to the same man that the fire Goddess Pele fancied. To rid herself of a potential romantic rival, Pele eventually turned this lovely maiden into stone. Pele’s wrath not only birthed an islet, but also one of the most popular sites for snorkelers in the state. In fact, Molokini has acquired a reputation as one of the best snorkeling and diving spots in the world. This
Molokini sunken crater attracts thousands of visitors every year who plunge into its inviting waters and marvel at the aquatic life found below the surface. Potential snorkelers should note that the island is basically divided into the Right and Left Tips. There are fine diving spots on both tips, known as Reef’s End, Middle Reef and Tako Flats. The center of Molokini is home to a reef that provides great views for snorkelers, with visibility of up to 150 feet. There is also a spot for diving in the back of the crater, where the island’s back wall descends to depths of 300 feet. The best time to visit

Molokini is in the morning, when conditions are the most optimal. However, Molokini’s status as a fish, sea life and bird sanctuary means that snorkelers and divers are prohibited from walking on the island itself. Visitors are also forbidden to feed or get near the marine animal residents of Molokini, such as Hawaiian monk seals and green sea turtles. Whether the
creation of an angry goddess or a slightly more benevolent mother nature, Molokini will enchant both the amateur and experienced snorkeler with its crystal clear waters, array of underwater creatures and the overall aesthetic of the island’s shape—like a necklace cut from rock and stone but sitting invitingly on the clear blue waters of the Pacific Ocean.

The longest running food-andwine event across the United States, the Kapalua Wine & Food Festival will enter its 37th year in June. This celebration of epicurean excellence combines the finest in food and wine while embracing all things Hawaiian—notably—the culinary bounty on Maui. Over the years, the festival program has grown to incorporate cooking demonstrations, wine-andfood pairings, winemakers’ dinners, a golf tournament, tennis clinic, the Kapalua wine tour and two major evening galas, the celebrated Grand Tasting with theme-inspired cuisine and wines from around the world, and the spectacular Seafood Festival, featuring culinary delights from Hawaii’s most prominent chefs. New wine enthusiasts and veterans alike have been attracted to this epicurean event throughout the years. Event organizers say the objective each year is to continue to position the Kapalua Wine & Food Festival as the most distinguished culinary festival in the state of Hawai‘i, and as one of the most respected in the nation. Events will run from June 7-10. kapaluawineandfoodfestival.com

Every June, a bit of Hollywood glitz and glamour arrives in Maui for the Maui Film Festival at Wailea, where a week’s worth of red-carpet events, celebrity-packed awards ceremonies and film screenings turn this normally relaxed resort area into a dizzying spectacle of lights and cameras. Some of the main stars of the film festival—aside from the actual films and celebrities—are the larger-than-life parties and culinary events. Taste of Chocolate, June 15 at Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea, has always been a culinary mainstay of the film festival. Enjoy savory appetizers and a host of sweet desserts. Stars of the culinary world turn out for Taste of Wailea, June 16, on the rolling greens of the David Leadbetter Private Academy at Wailea Gold and Emerald golf courses. Top chefs will prepare creative cuisine using the bounty of Maui farmers, ranchers and fishermen. The official launch party on June 13 will be themed a Taste of Summer. mauifilmfestival.com w w w.wh e re t rave le r.c o m

Century Ride
Out + About Besides outrageous and luxurious pampering, the island offers a range of rugged and invigorating outdoor activities. From biking down Haleakalā to swinging away at a golf course, Maui is “no ka oi”— the best—when it comes to the outdoors.
ABOVE PAR Combining breathtaking beauty with challenging terrain, Maui’s golf courses are a joy for duffers. Whether your idea of heaven is an oh-so-sweet drive from a wind-swept sea cliff or putting on some of the most pristine greens you have ever experienced, Maui offers more than a dozen scenic and demanding courses. From Kapalua to Wailea, the views can be distracting. But stay focused on your game. You’ll want to show off that Maui scorecard when you return home. 14 W H E R E M AU I I S P R I N G / S U M M E R 2018
The ride down Haleakalā is both a journey and a destination. Whether you choose a sunrise or mid-day tour, biking down a 10,000-foot volcano is something special indeed. A sunrise tour requires a start as early as 3. Dress warm, as it will be very cold that early in the morning. After being outfitted with gear, helmet and a bike, enjoy an informative van ride to the top. After a safety session and taking in the amazing views from above the clouds, it’s off you go for the bike ride of a lifetime. Miles and miles of smooth cruising await, with stops for photos, meals and pickups. There are many volcano bike tours to choose from, so rules, routes, times and costs will vary.

WHERE NOW Maui
THE ART OF LOVING HANDS
RELAX + RENEW
SERENITY NOW From overworked corporate executives to sleep-deprived parents, Maui visitors are finding serenity and rejuvenation at the island’s luxurious resort spas. Gathered from land and sea, indigenous Hawaiian ingredients are integrated with time-honored international traditions to fuel these temples of serenity.
Lomilomi simply means “to knead” or “to rub” in Hawaiian. In ancient times, lomilomi was considered to be both medicinal and restorative. This indigenous Hawaiian healing was practiced by Kahuna lā‘au lapa‘au (native healers), and was used as a curative health practice within families. An endearing alternate name for lomilomi is “loving hands,” which is an appropriate term for this work, since the technique requires gentle kneading into the muscles with continuous, flowing strokes. Hawaiian lomilomi massage therapists apply pressure to the recipient by leaning into them, using tools of the body, including lima (hands and arms), ku‘eku‘e lima (elbows) and even wāwae (feet). Gentle stretches of the limbs and torso, as well as rotations of the joints, are also incorporated to assist the release of tensions and to ease the flow of energy.
The road to Hāna is long and winding. Now, it’s also the inspiration for a new spa treatment at Westin Kā‘anapali Ocean Resort Villas’ Spa Helani. Developed by spa director, Tifany LeGuyonne, “The Journey to Hāna” blends ancient Egyptian traditions—now called psammo therapy—with traditional Hawaiian healing. The treatment is performed on a revolutionary heated quartz sand bed, which is known to generate a deep warmth that provides physical and mental relaxation. With only 16 of such beds available in the United States, and only this one in the entire state of Hawai‘i, Spa Helani guests can be assured of a unique experience. “It’s a warm table of sand, which we pair with warm bamboo sticks for a deeper and more therapeutic feeling,” LeGuyonne explains. “The treatment puts guests in a deep state of relaxation.” Therapy is performed in the spa’s treehouse for a more holistic environment. “Crystal therapy is emerging and finding new ways based on old traditions,” LeGuyonne adds. “It aligns the body and mind.” Spa Helani, 6 Kai Ala Drive, 808.662.2644, westinkaanapali.com 16 W H E R E M AU I I S P R I N G / S U M M E R 2018

Gastropubs

With their proliferation and popularity, gastropubs transcend the “trend” label and have become a veritable dining genre. (1) Restaurateur/chef Dave “D.K.” Kodama’s latest venture is Shearwater Tavern in Kīhei. Try the oven-roasted bone marrow served with crostini and mixed greens. (2) At Pint & Cork in Wailea, the “Bib Burger” is aptly named because it’s gooey, thick and messy but well worth the extra napkins. (3) Monkeypod Kitchen in Wailea is another favorite, featuring such hearty fare as wood-fired pizzas, bulgogi pork tacos and kiawe-grilled ahi.
Whether you’re in the air, above the water or beneath the ocean, Maui boasts spectacular views from many vantage points. (1) Maverick Helicopters offers breathtaking tour packages that promise aerial vistas of the winding coastline and Haleakalā National Park. (2) Meanwhile, Pacific Whale Foundation transports guests to one of Hawai’i’s top snorkeling spots: Molokini, a crescent-shaped islet with a thriving coral reef that’s home to more than 250 species. (3) For a scenic day trip to Lāna‘i, book a seat aboard the new ferry Expeditions Six.
Maui is an island of contrasts. To experience this, take to the road and discover rustic towns, alpine peaks and lush jungle. (1) The famous Hāna Highway takes roughly three hours to traverse and winds its way over single-lane bridges and past numerous waterfalls and scenic sights. (2) Once a plantation town centered on Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company, today Pā‘ia is one of the top windsurfing destinations in the world. (3) A world away from beach resorts, Upcountry Maui reflects the island’s agricultural and paniolo (cowboy) roots.
