Exploring the Island At 24 years young, Zane Kekoa Schweitzer has already accomplished a lot as a professional waterman. He has won 15 World Champion titles and was honored twice as the Ultimate Waterman. Yet, one of the Maui native’s proudest moments is leading Westin Maui Resort & Spa guest-volunteers on beach cleanups (pages 10-11). Speaking of beaches, you’ll want to visit the sands of Hāna, Wailea and Kā‘anapali (page 14). And along the way, check out what’s new on our local culinary and entertainment scenes (pages 12 and 16).

Q: What inspired you to become a concierge? A: Working outside in the Las Vegas heat and experiencing migraine headaches didn’t exactly work so I applied for a concierge position at the then recently opened Bellagio resort. At the time, I didn’t know much about the position but knew that it was assisting guests, which I loved, and it was in air conditioning. I would have never imagined that the “job” would become my passion. Q: What type of experience(s) do you try to provide for your guests? A: Many guests save a lifetime to come to Maui and I want to make sure that it is a vacation that they will never forget. The key is getting to know each and every guest. Where are they visiting from? Have they been to Maui before? And if they are celebrating any occasion? These are just a few of the key nuggets of information needed to be able to provide the best customer service and activity suggestions. Q: What are your favorite eateries or places to visit on Maui? A: Some of my favorite eateries on island are ROCKsalt for its lobster 4
W H E R E M AU I I S U M M E R / FA L L 2018
miso, Pā’ia Fish Market for its fish tacos, Monkeypod Kitchen for its mai tai and strawberry cream pie and Lāhainā Grill for everything on its menu. Q: What do you recommend for the adventure-seeking visitor? A: No vacation to Maui is quite complete without surfing the perfect wave. The guys down at Kā’anapali Surf Club will get you standing on the board in no time. Q: What’s the most popular request you’ve received recently? A: By far the most frequent requests regard places of interest along the Road to Hāna and sunrise at Haleakalā. I can’t stress enough the importance of making advance reservations for sunrise at Haleakalā. They can be made at recreation.gov and they do fill up quickly so be sure to plan accordingly. Q: What’s your must-have or must-do before leaving Maui? A: I always suggest doing something by ocean, by land and by air. Experience an exciting snorkel excursion; zipline through nature; and there is no better way to see the island than on a helicopter tour. Also make sure to stop and pick up a Maui Gold Pineapple before you leave paradise. Adam Lieberman, Director of Concierge Services—Aqualani at Sheraton Maui Resort.

oluntourism is a portmanteau that is heard more often these days at local resorts across the world. The main premise is straightforward: volunteer while playing tourist. Leading a beach clean-up with Canadian visitors, Jaret and Kirra Lockhart, Zane Kekoa Schweitzer talks about shards of microplastics and their origins. He speaks of microbiology and he considers it a moral imperative to keep our beaches and oceans clean. “I want to create what I call a ‘blue mindshift,’” says the 24-year-old professional waterman, who led the inaugural Novice Enthusiast activity as the first featured Westin Maui Waterman initiative. “Instead of going green, think ‘deepblue life.’ It’s more than just about a beach cleanup, it’s a paradigm shift. It’s being conscientious about the choices you make and taking responsibility for those choices— good or bad.” The Westin volunteer program allows resort guests to give back to the local community by participating in thoughtfully designed ocean adventures with paddle boarders, boat captains, canoe racers and others who want to share their respect for the water and passion for the environment. These watermen and women will also educate visitors about the national marine sanctuary fronting Kā’anapali Beach and the importance of “malama ‘āina” (“protecting the land”). “Surrounded by water and in the incredible setting of the largest area of the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, we are most excited to share this new endeavor,” says Westin Maui Resort & Spa’s general manager Thomas Foti. “We are delighted to provide a unique, meaningful and mindful travel experience that we hope stays with guests when they return home and continues the malama ‘āina spirit that is so important in Hawai’i.” Also with a similar goal of keeping our waters thriving and healthy, Trilogy Excursions has led the visitor industry in preserving and protecting Maui’s precious reefs. In 2010, this snorkel- and whale-watching company partnered with the Surfrider Foundation Maui Chapter and began its highly successful Blue ‘Aina campaign. This monthly sail takes concerned locals and like-minded visitors on one of its state-of-the-art catamarans to a reef where the object is to find and remove debris. “We’re finding less and less trash, which is the consistent trend,” says Magen Schifiliti, Trilogy’s conservation and education director. “We consider these outings as a ‘floating workshop and community service.’ We conduct water quality testing right on the boat and collect data so participants can see that their efforts make a difference.” At the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa, Fred Findlen encourages hotel guests to get involved with the

Island Views Areas to Explore No two neighborhoods are alike on Maui. Here are a few you will want to check out while on the island.
This popular South Maui destination is a land of luxurious resorts, manicured golf courses, upscale retail, fine dining and, one can confidently say, the island’s best beaches. Here, expanses of immaculate golden sand, azure waters and lazily swaying palm trees are the stuff of those proverbial “get away from it all” dreams. Mokapu, Ulua, Wailea and Polo Beaches offer prime snorkeling, swimming and unrivalled views of the neighboring islands of Lāna‘i, Kaho‘olawe, and Molokini Islet. Travers-

ing the 1.5-mile coastal walk— between Mokapu and Polo Beaches—is a great way to experience Wailea’s strands of sand, restaurants, shops and art galleries without ever having to get into your car.

Road to Hāna It’s said the 54-mile Hāna Highway (from Kahului to east Maui’s Hāna) has 617 curves, 56 bridges, and numberless waterfalls and streams. It’s not certain who did the counting, but this much is clear: Time is elastic on the Hāna Highway. You’ll get there when you get there. Bends in the road appear without warning, and cars move slowly. Picturesque sites with mellifluous names curl along the coast: Uaoa, Ho‘olawa, Waipi‘o, Huelo, Makaiwa, Wailua and dozens more. The road is elevated, so the views are endless. Just when you think you’ve reached the limits of exhaustion and Caption text hunger, a fruit stand appears. And when you finally arrive in Hāna, you’ll find it’s another beginning. There’s Ōheo and its terracing streams and, beyond that, a small Hawaiian community called Kipahulu. 14 W H E R E M AU I I S U M M E R / FA L L 2018
popularity. It’s easy to see why this former sugar plantation was chosen: its beaches. At the north end, Kahekili Beach is great for snorkeling. Along the length of the resort, Kā‘anapali Beach is lined with swank hotels that have made West Maui a top destination. One of Kā‘anapali’s signature attractions, Pu‘u Keka‘a (Black Rock) is a unique outcropping of lava surrounded by thriving coral reef. While divers and snorkelers savor the underwater sights, landlubbers enjoy the mile-long oceanfront walkway or the Kā‘anapali Historic Trail, a two-hour journey starting at the Royal Lāhainā Resort.

Chalk it up as a major coup for Maui Brewing Company, which recently added award-winning chef Jojo Vasquez to its culinary team at the Kīhei brewery. Guests can now expect some serious gastronomy with their craft beer. Voted as 2017 Chef of the Year by his peers, Vasquez has been a tour de force in the local food scene for the past 13 years. His reputation as a proponent of sustainable, artisanal cuisine caught the attention of Maui Brewing Company, and the newfound partnership offers him an exciting opportunity to bring that sensibility to Maui’s burgeoning gastropub scene. “I do everything based on the integrity of the ingredients and an eclectic method that uses as much local, sustainable avenues as I have,” says Vaszquez in a news release. Along with sustainability and locally sourced ingredients, the company’s dedication to artisan craftsmanship also goes handin-hand with Vasquez’s personal philosophy as a chef. “I, too, want to make sure there’s craftsmanship in the touches and elegance in the plating.” 605 Lipoa Pkwy., 808.201.BEER, mauibrewingco.com.
chef, Ed Morita (pictured left), is developing some sweet surprises, including a new lemon chess pie prepared with kiawe flour instead of the traditional cornmeal. “It’s still tart but it also has the sweet essence of the kiawe,” Morita says. “What I’m trying to do is put a local spin on traditional baked goods.” One of his latest experiment is a kabocha crunch. Instead of baking the Japanese squash, he’s using the imu at Old Lāhainā Lū‘au to smoke the squash. “I’m still trying to find the right amount of smokage,” Morita notes. “Not everyone is familiar with smoked desserts.” He’s also working on a new line of bagels, malasada and other baked goods for Na Hoaloha ‘Ekolu group, which includes Old Lāhainā Lū‘au, Star Noodle, Aloha Mixed Plate and Leoda’s. 16 W H E R E M AU I I S U M M E R / FA L L 2018

Former “Top Chef” contestant is eager to reveal his culinary heritage at his soon-to-open Lineage restaurant. “I can’t wait to share what we’re doing,” says Sheldon Simeon. “We’ve got some great things lined up.” Among them is a cart service, which eliminates the wait for your first course. “You sit down and you can have food already on the table,” Simeon says. “This is like I’m welcoming you into my home.” An extension of that aloha is crafted through the menu, which Simeon describes as a “celebration of recipes of old Hawai’i, and those of his parents and grandparents.” “It’s really celebrating what we eat,” says the Hawai’i Island native. “There’ll be smoked meats, like Portuguese sausage, and I’m playing with different Hawaiian salts to make my pipikaula (salted and dried beef).” Simeon anticipates Lineage’s grand opening to be in late August or early September. And when it does open, everyone is invited to share his Filipino lineage. The Shops at Wailea, 3750 Wailea Alanui Dr.

N A V I G AT E not limited to, dozens of cascading waterfalls, one-lane bridges arcing across cliffsides wrapped in hanging gardens and charming small towns. KAANAPALI Kaanapali experienced
a surge of popularity in the ‘60s as developers built resorts here to rival the beaches of Waikiki on Oahu — and they succeeded. It’s easy to see why this former sugar plantation was chosen as the island’s first planned resort destination: the beaches. KAHULUI Kahului is Maui’s busiest port
and most populous metro area. This workaday town of some 20,000 people is usually the first city visitors to Maui see after touching down at the nearby Kahului Airport. KIHEIThis unpretentious South Maui
town draws locals and visitors to its beaches. LAHAINAThe most frequently visited
spot on the island, Lahaina is the only town in leeward Maui with a genuine downtown. Its primary draw is Front Street, a crowded main drag where a variety of restaurants, shops and
hideaway cafes tucked into side streets create a maze of quirky charm. PAIA Once an plantation town centered
on Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company, today Paia enjoys its status as one of the top windsurfing destinations in the world. At nearby Hookipa Beach Park — host of the annual Aloha Classic Wave Championships, the crown jewel of wave sailing events — sailboarders perform complex aerial maneuvers. UPCOUNTRYWith its mild climate,
fertile soil, grazing lands and diverse botanicals, Upcountry has become the Maui version of Napa. Upcountry is where boutique food emporiums and the island’s forward-thinking chefs get top-quality organic ingredients. Upcountry constitutes the landscape surrounding Haleakala from the 3,000-foot elevation all the way up to the volcano’s cloud-shrouded peak. In this high-altitude terrain, paniolo ride herd on the 30,000-acre Ulupalakua Ranch, in the hills above Wailea, and on Haleakala Ranch, which centers on the town of Kula. One of the area’s major attractions is the “cowboy town” of
Makawao, an unlikely mix of ranchers, hippies, mountain bikers, artists and real estate brokers, and home to many of Maui’s best eateries and galleries. WAILEAThe popular South Maui
destination is a land of posh resorts, manicured golf courses, upscale retail, dining and, one can confidently say, the island’s best beaches. Here, expanses of immaculate sand, ultramarine waters and lazily swaying palms are the stuff of those proverbial “get away from it all” dreams. There is prime snorkeling and unrivalled views of Kahoolawe and Molokini, while the coastal walk between Mokapu and Polo Beaches is a great way to experience the area without getting into your car.
Transportation MAUI BUSThe Maui Bus has eleven
routes. The Kihei Islander Route connects Wailea, Kihei, Maalaea Harbor and Kahului; the Lahaina Islander links Kahului, Maalaea Harbor and Lahaina; The Kaanapali Islander Route connects Lahaina with the resorts at Kaanapali. For route and timetable information, call 808.871.4838.
