Exploring the Island When it comes to a cool, refreshing treat, it’s hard to resist a scoop of Roselani Tropics Ice Cream, a cup of pineapple guri guri or a handmade cone filled with one of Island Cream Co.’s “crazy blends” (p.1011). Even if it is winter, these cold desserts hit the spot on a warm Maui day. Speaking of warm, our waters are relatively tepid compared to the Pacific Northwest. This is the reason humpback whales migrate here every year (page 12). Whale-watching season occurs from Dec. 15 to May 15, with the peak months being February and March.

Q: What inspired you to become a concierge? A: Before I worked in hospitality, I helped a lot of people who were just moving to the island as an insurance agent. I have a natural inclination to help others and I enjoy critical thinking and problemsolving. I was an assistant manager in housekeeping when the concierge manager position opened up and I thought I would enjoy the challenge. Q: What type of experience(s) do you try to provide for your guests? A: I try to customize the experience to the guest’s interests and comfort level, but always strive to help them create amazing memories to take home with them. Maui is great because there are so many options which helps me tailor an experience designed just for them. Q: What are your favorite eateries or places to visit on Maui? A: Working in Wailea, Monkeypod Kitchen is a favorite go-to spot—especially for their signature mai tai! I love the avocado toast at That’s a Wrap in Kīhei. If it’s a special occasion, Lāhainā Grill or Mama’s Fish House are always a fun splurge. Taking a trip to Maui Wine is always a nice getaway and visiting some 4

Q: What do you recommend for the adventure-seeking visitor? A: For the adventure-seeking visitor, I would recommend a “doors-off” helicopter ride with a landing. It’s one of the best ways to see the island and learn about some of the history. Zip lining, rappelling or riding an ATV are other good options. For those who love the water, learning how to surf or scuba dive would be my two recommendations.

Cher Wheeler

Q: What’s the most popular request you’ve received recently? A: I’ve been getting more requests for good local food. There’s definitely a lot happening in the Maui food scene, with more independent food trucks, and more restaurants popping up by local chefs. I would definitely encourage people to check out a unique culinary experience, like our Bitters + Bites tasting menu at Ka’ana Kitchen.

WHERE | HAWAII OFFICES

Q: What’s your must-have or must-do before leaving Maui? A: For me, a must-do is to get out on an outrigger canoe excursion with our beach crew. You’ll learn about the Polynesian voyagers, as well as Maui and the surrounding islands. I also think you can’t leave without trying some of the local food. Guri is a Maui institution, which first opened near the railroad tracks in Kahului. It has now been more than six decades since the late Gunji Tasaka introduced the hybrid sherbet-sorbet-ice cream-ish treat to Maui residents. And today, it’s still the same recipe and the same two flavors: pineapple and strawberry. “We don’t like change,” chuckles Cinday Tasaka-Ing, the fourth generation family member to work at this quaint mom-and-pop shop. “It’s also easier this way since people don’t have to decide which flavor they want; it’s either pineapple or strawberry.”

it love at first taste. When Maui residents had their first scoop of Roselani Tropics Ice Cream, they swooned over the rich and velvety smooth cold treat. That was in 1932. Today, you can find a wide variety of Roselani ice creams in stores statewide, or you can ask for it by name at restaurants and ice-cream parlors. It’s worth asking, and chances are they’ll have it. Popular flavors include Poppa’s Classic Chocolate, the Kona Mud Pie, Mango ‘n Cream, Hawai‘i Vanilla Bean, Macadamia Nut and Haupia (coconut pudding flavor).

As the fourth generation Tasaka

to work at the eponymous Guri Guri shop in Kahului, Cindy Tasaka-Ing, along with her sister Gail Saito, hold the heavily guarded secret to the hybrid sherbet-sorbet-ice cream treat. Her dad’s father invented the Japanese recipe, which is a dairybased treat that Tasaka-Ing describes as “not as heavy as ice cream but not as icy as shave ice.” The Tasakas produce and sell about 40 gallons a day, not counting the takeout orders. completion of a three-week course in how to make gelato in Italy, Dan Blessing walked away with a new idea: develop a hybrid between gelato and ice cream, and name it Island Cream. Located at the Lāhainā Gateway Center, Island Cream Co. offers a rotating menu of what Blessing describes as “more than 150 crazy blends … and counting.” “Everything is handmade, from our chocolate cake to cookies, and we use local ingredients whenever possible,” Blessing explains. “It’s very labor intensive and we take more of a scientific approach.” Among the more popular flavors is the Maui Loco, which starts with a special cream base that’s blended with dulce de leche, coconut, macadamia nuts and chocolate chips, and served in a homemade cone with a Pirouline stick for dipping. Other unique flavors include Kaua‘i Karmel, Maui French Toast, Lāhainā Cream and Hāna Carmel Popcorn. WHERE NOW Maui

Educational Program Year in and year out for hundreds of years, Maui’s most loyal visitors have been the Northern Pacific Humpback Whales. They return each November from their 6,000-mile-long migration to Alaska and the Bering Sea to mate, bear and nurture their calves in the warm winter waters of Hawai‘i. Watching them splash and breach, sometimes so close to the shore they cause a traffic jam, is an exciting experience. Getting onto the water for a guided whale-watching cruise is an even more rewarding experience, particularly when your tour guide is the nonprofit Pacific Whale Foundation. Founded in 1980 by Greg Kaufman, a pioneer in non-invasive humpback whale research, the Foundation’s mission is to protect our oceans through science and advocacy, which includes educating the public about whales and their ocean habitat. Your ticket to adventure supports bona fide scientific research on whales and dolphins in Hawai‘i and other parts of the Pacific, including Australia, Chile and Ecuador. Most of their studies on Maui’s marine life is conducted onboard its dedicated research vessel, Ocean Protector. To find out more about Pacific Whale Foundation, call 808.249.8811 or visit PacificWhale.org. You can also stop by its Ocean Store at the Ma’alaea Harbor Shops or at 612 Front Street in Lāhainā. THE GUIDE

Navigate Day Tripping If you’re looking to experience a Hawai‘i where the beaches are void of crowds, the roads lack traffic lights and the aloha spirit lives, take a ferry to the neighboring islands of Lāna’i and Moloka’i for a day trip. The least populated of the Hawaiian chain, both islands offer a nostalgic travel back in time, to an era before the state became a tourist mecca for throngs of people.

EXPEDITIONS— Daily round-trip ferry

service between Maui and Lanai, with five departures from Lahaina Harbor on Maui and five from Manele Harbor on Lanai. For more information and schedules, call 808.661.3756. SAIL TRILOGY—Sail to the island of Lanai

for an excellent day at sea. If the season is right, you may see a whale or two. sailtrilogy.com. 180 Lahainaluna Rd., 808.874.5649.

First Look HALEAKALA— One of Hawai‘i’s biggest

attractions is the stunning 10,000-foot Haleakala, the world’s largest dormant volcano. Haleakala’s most magnificent feature is the crater itself: 3,000 feet deep, 2.5 miles across and with a circumference of 21 miles. nps.gov/hale/index.htm.

SNORKELING OFF MOLOKINI—The

turquoise waters and exotic marine life around this tiny crescent-shaped island are located three miles off the southwest coast of Maui. molokinicrater.com. ‘IAO NEEDLE—The ‘Iao Needle is a

1,200-foot cone of hardened lava at the heart of the ‘Iao Valley, a 6.2-acre state park just west of Wailuku in West Maui.

Island Views KAANAPALI— It’s easy to see why this

former sugar plantation was chosen as the island’s first planned resort destination: the beaches. KIHEI—This unpretentious South Maui

town draws locals and visitors to its beaches. PAIA— Once a plantation town centered

on Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company, today, Paia enjoys its status as one of the top windsurfing destinations in the world.

UPCOUNTRY—With its mild climate,

fertile soil, grazing lands and diverse botanicals, Upcountry has become the Maui version of Napa. WAILEA—The popular South Maui

destination is a land of posh resorts, manicured golf courses, upscale retail, dining and, one can confidently say, the island’s best beaches. Here, expanses of immaculate sand, ultramarine waters and lazily swaying palms are the stuff of those proverbial “get away from it all” dreams.

Transportation MAUI BUS—The Maui Bus has eleven

routes. The Kihei Islander Route connects Wailea, Kihei, Maalaea Harbor and Kahului; the Lahaina Islander links Kahului, Maalaea Harbor and Lahaina; The Kaanapali Islander Route connects Lahaina with the resorts at Kaanapali. For route and timetable information, call 808.871.4838.

LOCATED IN THE CENTRAL VALLEY, Wailuku was named county seat for Maui, Moloka‘i, Lāna‘i and Kaho‘olawe in 1905, but its history is much older.
