ASK THE EXPERT Peter McBrearty CHIEF CONCIERGE THE LANGHAM MELBOURNE AND PAST PRESIDENT OF LES CLEFS D’OR AUSTRALIA

Q: What is a great day trip destination to head to from the city?

A: In the winter months it’s the ideal time to head up into The Dandenongs, which aren’t too far from the city and can be enjoyed in any weather. The trees and mountain ferns are magnificent and distinctly Australian, there are attractions such as William Rickett’s Sanctuary, and also plenty of warm, cosy places to enjoy lunch or afternoon tea. Q: AFL fever abounds this month in the lead up to finals time. What are some pre- and post-game tips for fans? Pubs to visit post-match?

A: The weather is unpredictable, however at the same time it offers the opportunity to experience the many inside attractions Melbourne has to offer, ranging from the cultural such as art galleries, museums and theatres, to the culinary, in the form of our many restaurants, cafes and bars—without the guilty feeling that you should really be outside in the sunshine. Q: What’s your favourite pub/bar to visit during winter?

LO C A L K N O W L E D G E

(From top) AFL at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Peter McBrearty.

6

WHE RE I A U G U ST 201 8

A: The Catfish in Fitzroy for their combination of craft beers and live music, The Napier in Fitzroy for the authentic inner Melbourne atmosphere (and their legendary “Bogan” Burgers), or PJ O’Brien’s at Southgate for their warm atmosphere, music and Beef and Guinness pie.

Q: What’s your best advice for a first-time visitor to Melbourne?

A: To both walk and fully utilise Melbourne’s free transport zone to explore the centre of town, and to head down some of the more obscure laneways, as you never know what you’ll find down there. Investing in a Myki (public transport card) also opens up access to inner suburban areas such as Fitzroy, Carlton, Windsor and St Kilda, and the vast array of small bars, cafés, pubs and restaurants they contain.

MELBOURNE CRICKET GROUND: SDP MEDIA.

Q: What’s the best thing about Melbourne in August?

A: The main pre-game tip would be to dress with an eye on Melbourne’s variable weather. At the game, perhaps support the team who has the largest fans nearby! The Duke in Flinders Street isn’t too far from the MCG, serves great food and has a wide array of local beers, while Young and Jackson’s on Flinders and Swanston has a sense of history and of course, Chloe (a famous painting), upstairs in her own bar.

Diamond Collection New levels of luxury in the heart of the city

MELBOURNE IS A PLACE that needs no introduction. Named the world’s most liveable city every year for the last seven years, it’s renowned for glorious parks and sandy bayside beaches, retail shopping and stadium sports, good coffee and fine dining, festivals and the arts, universities and multiculturalism. With so many of these attractions either within the city’s compact CBD, or just a stone’s throw away, it’s easy to see why so many seek not just to live in Melbourne, but to ensure their home is as close as possible to the city centre. And easier still to appreciate the many advantages of a 380 Melbourne address. Situated in the true heart of the city, its shimmering forms are home to elite residential living opportunities, a boutique hotel managed by one of the world’s premier luxury hotel operators, and a long list of classleading amenities—all complemented by a selection of ground floor retail and the convenience of having the best of Melbourne on your doorstep. Designed by Elenberg Fraser— a multi award-winning, integrated architecture practice operating across the Asia-Pacific region—the dual towers of 380 Melbourne make a striking addition to the mid-town cityscape.

8

WHE RE I A U G U ST 201 8

At 380 Melbourne, a sophisticated home to call your own in the heart of the city is just the beginning. As a Diamond Collection resident, you’ll also enjoy access to a phenomenal selection of in-house facilities and amenities, all presented in the most stylish of surrounds. If fitness and wellbeing are your focus, you’ll find a range of healthy options at the ready, including a gymnasium, yoga and personal training studio, 25-metre indoor heated pool and a spa, steam room and sauna. Or maybe you’d prefer to exercise your culinary skills? If so, 380 Melbourne’s selection of private dining rooms will allow you to cook up a storm for family, friends and neighbours. For more casual dining, there’s also an outdoor BBQ area. Or for entertaining of an entirely different nature, there’s a private cinema, a karaoke room complete with its own bar, and a games room featuring foosball, table tennis and a giant TV. There’s no shortage of quiet spaces, either. The rooftop garden terrace is perfect for ‘me time’, a good read is always on offer at the library and study space, while the exquisite residents’ lounge provides the perfect buffer between the buzz of the city, and the tranquillity of home.

Benefit from dealing directly with the Brady Property Group, Melbourne CBD specialists with more than 30 years’ experience, the group has initiated and completed in excess of 20 large-scale residential projects. A perfect and much envied track record, it is testament to their thoughtful consideration of location, the insight and quality inherent in their design, and the meticulous precision of their execution. Equally reassuring is Brady Group’s integrated, end-to-end approach. As well as being property developers and hoteliers, they are also award-winning Master Builders, with dedicated sales and property management teams. Going Green Stay well when you travel with these five health conscious eateries. By Cat Woods. VISITORS TO MELBOURNE have access to a rich variety of cafĂŠs, diners and restaurants. For those who are seeking a nutritious meal, or looking for gluten free, vegan, nut or dairy free choices, the following five healthy eating spots are each an easy trip from central Melbourne by public transport or car.

OPPOSITE PAGE: SEEDLING, PHOTO: JONATHAN KRYWICKI. THIS PAGE: SHORT STRAW, PHOTO: CAT WOODS.

NAUGHTY BOY, CARLTON There are so many great choices at this Carlton hotspot, famous for their InstaShakes™ and pretty-as-a-picture plating. Try the poke bowl, it’s a combination of quinoa, sesame sauce, edamame beans, pickled ginger and seaweed, pickled cabbage and avocado. Typically served with salmon, the menu allows for you to request a vegan or vegetarian option so you replace salmon or egg with tofu instead. The Naughty Boy (bacon, egg, chorizo, hash brown and baked beans) will certainly appeal to paleo-inclined diners. Easily accessible by public transport or driving, you’ll arrive to find a light-filled, welcoming space (with crayons and toys for kids). The coffee is top quality, so do yourself a favour and have at least one. 499–501 Lygon Street, Carlton North. naughtyboycafe.com.au

THE CAFE IN THE GYM, RICHMOND

SHORT STRAW, HAWTHORN

This café is open to everyone, even though it’s located within Fitness First in Richmond. There’s a tram stop right outside. As you’d expect, this is a dining option for the fit foodie. There’s a daily rotating variety of healthy, delicious and freshly made, portioned meals. If you are very particular about meeting your macros needs, then owner Denise is happy to make up your meal to suit. There’s also “protein packs” for those who want the standard meal with an additional dose of chicken, beef, lamb or other. A vegan protein is currently in the works. I tried the brown rice, roast pumpkin, sundried tomato, green salad with olive oil dressing. The Cafe In The Gym, Fitness First, 560 Church Street, Richmond.

Just a short tram ride from central Melbourne, you’ll find Short Straw in Hawthorn. This café is owned by an experienced team of hospitality experts and it shows in their epicurean approach to nutritious, gourmet menus and meals. The Garden of Eden (peas, avocado and a variety of greens and veggies) is both flavour packed and satiating. The poke bowl and smashed avocado options can both be modified for vegan diners. The food presentation is flawless and you’ll find yourself well-fuelled for a stroll along Glenferrie Road, where clothing, books, music, food and beauty stores abound. 743b Glenferrie Road, Hawthorn. shortstraw.com.au

KEEN ON GREEN

(Opposite page) Seedling. (This page from top) Naughty Boy. Short Straw.

BENS SUPERNATURAL, SOUTH YARRA SEEDLING, CITY There are two Seedling cafés in Melbourne’s CBD. Their emphasis is on nutritious, wholesome food that is super fresh, and they are 100 percent gluten-free. The Winter Bowl with brown rice, roast pumpkin, tomatoes and mushrooms, avocado, crispy chickpeas and pesto dressing is delicious. The Superfood Salads include pea, avocado and cranberry; but there’s a rotating variety. You can eat in, or take your meal to one

With fresh salads, wraps, burgers and a full variety of smoothies and juices, there’s no shortage of delicious choices for the health conscious diner. The wrap with tempeh, which is served in two generous portions with a dipping sauce, is fabulous. There’s plenty of vegan and vegetarian options, including the mushroom burger (hearty mushroom between a generous, fresh bun). 16/670 Chapel Street, South Yarra. benssupernatural.com

Movie Magic The Melbourne International Film Festival brings world-class cinema to town this month. By Roshan Sukhla.

POPCORN? CHECK. CANDY? CHECK. Oversized soft drink? Check. Then get yourself a ticket and grab a seat, because the show is about to start. This month Melbourne is home to the 2018 Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) running from 2–19 August at venues across the city. This year’s incredible program includes 254 feature films, 120 shorts and 19 virtual reality experiences. There are 27 world premieres and 168 Australian premieres over 18 cinema-filled days. Artistic Director, Michelle Carey presents her final MIFF program after eight years in the job. She says, “MIFF 2018 promises thrills, laughs and

24

WHE RE I A U G U ST 201 8

surprises, across galas, features, retrospectives, documentaries, shorts, live performances and VR. We have assembled the festival’s largest program yet and I can’t wait to unleash it onto Melbourne’s cine-savvy audiences.” Opening this year’s festival is the Australian Premiere of Paul Dano’s directorial debut “Wildlife”, which stars Carey Mulligan, Jake Gyllenhaal and Australia’s own Ed Oxenbould. Special events this year include a ‘Cage-a-Thon’ at The Astor. The overnight movie marathon is a must for Nic Cage fans. Movies screening include “Mandy”, “Raising Arizona” and “Con Air”.

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: ALIA SHAWKAT. CAREY MULLIGAN STARS IN "WILDLIFE", COURTESY OF SUNDANCE INSTITUTE. "MCQUEEN".

Also showing at The Astor is Prince’s 1987 concert film, “Sign O’ The Times”. There are a number of special guests appearing at this year’s festival. See star of “Blaze”, Alia Shawkat in Conversation; Oscar nominated director, Debra Granik; French husband and wife filmmakers, Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani; and director of “Holiday”, Isabella Eklöf. Headlining films include Gaspar Noé’s “Climax”, an ecstatic look at sex, drugs and 90s club music which was the top prize winner from Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes;

The Music on Film program includes, “I Used to be Normal: A Boyband Fangirl Story”, a coming-of-age story about four women and the boy bands that changed their lives forever (Backstreet Boys, One Direction, Take That and The Beatles). It celebrates the joy they have found in the world of fandom. Sundance awardwinner, “MATANGI/MAYA/M.I.A.” takes a look at the divisive rapper, while “Bad Reputation” is the unseen story of the Godmother of Punk, the Queen of Rock, and unlikely feminist pioneer Joan Jett. The Fashion X Cinema program looks at the iconic fashion of cinema across the decades. “McQueen” is a look at the late, iconic UK fashion designer Alexander McQueen, while Lorna Tucker’s “Westwood: Punk, Icon, Activist” explores the life of Vivienne Westwood. ECHUCA MOAMA Visit the famed Echuca Moama region and see abandoned steamboats and barges, tall red gum wharfs and beautiful old station homesteads. The riverboat days were glorious times for Echuca— until a great depression hit in the 1890s. As the railways were extended and road transport improved, the river trade declined and the old wharf, built in 1865, was defunct by the 1920s. Today the nostalgic whistle is still a familiar sound, as the wharf is home to the world’s largest fleet of operating riverboats, with cruises running throughout the day. Echuca’s other star attraction is the Port of Echuca Discovery Centre, where you can step back

Hosier Lane Holding its place firm as Melbourne’s premier street art laneway is Hosier Lane. Located just opposite Federation Square, it runs between Flinders Street and Flinders Lane. The laneway itself is a visual overload of colours and images, the result of artwork on top of artwork being created. There’s a mix of tags and murals, as well as tribute pieces. Recently in Hosier Lane murals commemorated the lives of rapper Tupac and beloved chef and television personality

Anthony Bourdain. You’ll often walk past street artists at work, and if you are in need of a quirky Melbourne-centric marriage proposal you can even opt for a “Will You Marry Me (insert name here)?” piece of street art from the team at Unforgettable Proposals. Hosier Lane, Melbourne.

AC/DC Lane AC/DC Lane is also home to some great pieces of street art. Located just off Flinders Lane, between Russell Street and Exhibition

Street, the short laneway is named after Australia’s most iconic rock group. The murals in AC/DC Lane often have a musical theme and are continually evolving. AC/DC Lane, Melbourne.

Degraves Street For a splash of colour head to Degraves Street (connecting Flinders Lane and Flinders Street, between Elizabeth Street and Swanston Street) where you’ll find a mural of colourful rainbow mountains. Degraves Street, Melbourne.

Part museum, part showroom, the National Opal Collection is one of Australia’s most fascinating tourist attractions. Not only does it have a huge array of opals and jewellery for sale, but it also shows how opals came to be formed over millions of years and how they are mined today. Here you will discover the incredible link between the opal and the dinosaur.
