A: I’ll start with a walk around Fitzroy Gardens, then have breakfast on Flinders Lane. I’d then spend the day exploring Melbourne’s laneways, before having dinner at one of the city’s hottest new restaurants, Sunda. Sunda recently won a hat in the 2019 Good Food Guide, and serves great modern South East Asian cuisine. It’s also near the Princess Theatre, which is where I would stop in for a musical after dinner. Merry Melbourne celebrates the festive season in style. By Roshan Sukhla MERRY CHRISTMAS! HAPPY HOLIDAYS! Good tidings to all! However you like to say it, Melbourne is spreading the festive spirit all month long. City of Melbourne’s Christmas Festival (30 Nov–25 Dec) includes Christmas Square located at Federation Square and incredible Christmas light projections. This year the light projections will be at three locations – Federation Square, with a feature animated show, and static shows at Melbourne Town Hall and New Quay Promenade in Docklands. At Christmas Square there will be a 16-metre tall Christmas tree featuring a beautiful new sparkling star as well as the iconic giant Christmas Bauble. Visitors will be able to make their mark on Federation Square’s Yarra Building by producing their own Christmas projection, using savvy interactive finger paint technology to control the light projections. Families can visit Santa with his elves and take free photos on their smartphones at Santa’s House outside Melbourne Town Hall. Santa’s House will be open from 10am–12pm and 1pm–3pm daily. Santa will also be around Thursday and Friday evenings from 4pm–7pm. The Gingerbread Village, created by the pastry chefs from Epicure, will be the biggest one yet as it returns for its eighth year at a new location in the Riverside Gallery at Federation Square. City of Melbourne Lord Mayor Sally Capp said, “The Gingerbread Village, made from 560kg of gingerbread, will feature famous Melbourne landmarks, with all profits supporting the Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation”. Melbourne’s Myer Christmas Window display celebrates 63 years in 2018. Get in early to avoid the queues (view the windows daily 7.30am–1am until 6 Jan) and enjoy this year’s spectacular “Alice in Wonderland”

18

WHE RE I D E C E M B E R 2018

theme. The six windows are the culmination of 12,000 hours of work from start to finish, with 40 artisans working to bring the animation to life. To coincide with the festive season, the new exhibition “Make Believe: The Story of the Myer Christmas Windows” is on now at Melbourne Museum. For generations, families have made the trip into town to gaze at the miniature make-believe worlds behind the glass, in what has for many become a beloved and unmissable tradition. The exhibition is a magical experience for children and adults alike, with more than 250 quirky and kitsch characters from windows past, sketches, prototypes, props and animatronics on display. The Old Treasury Building also celebrates with their annual Christmas display from the 1920s. By the 1920s there were quite sophisticated Christmas decorations for sale in the shops, but most people could not afford them. Instead newspapers of the time printed designs and patterns for cheerful decorations, which could be made at home using readily available materials. As a reminder of times past, the Old Treasury Building has used these patterns to recreate a homely Christmas in the caretakers’ basement flat. It’s Christmas from a time gone by! For a fun-filled Christmas concert head to the Arts Centre Melbourne. “Christmas with the MSO” sees the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra joined by soprano and ARIA-Award nominee, Greta Bradman, for two shows on 8 December. Benjamin Northey will lead the Orchestra through a traditional and contemporary repertoire including carols such as “White Christmas” and “Silent Night”. However you choose to celebrate, always remember–Santa is making his list and checking it twice, so remember to be nice!

Captivating Kansley We chat to Kurt Kansley about his role as Che in the show-stopping new production of “EVITA”.

LONDON-BASED AUSTRALIAN KURT Kansley has returned home from performing in the West End, to play the role of the narrator Che in Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “EVITA”. Following an incredible run in Sydney, the musical opens here this month at the Arts Centre Melbourne with Australian superstar Tina Arena in the lead role of Eva Peron. We spoke with Kurt about the musical, his career so far and coming home to Oz. Can you tell us a little about your character of Che? Che in our production of “EVITA” is based on the Argentinian/Cuban revolutionary Che Guevara. As Che, I play the narrator of the piece and weave through the telling of the story of Eva Peron with a cynical perspective, an admiration and a disdain for what she did and what she represented.

Do you have a favourite moment in the show? I have many favourite moments; I love observing the chemistry between Tina Arena and Paulo Szot in “I’d Be Surprisingly Good For You” and in the “Dice are Rolling” scene at the end, I love Alexis Van Maanen performing “Another Suitcase”. My favourite numbers to perform are “Peron’s Latest Flame” and “Rolling on In”. The ensemble of singers and dancers are wonderful and create some vivid detail in their choices.

20

WHE RE I D E C E M B E R 2018

KURT KANSLEY AS CHE IN "EVITA", PHOTO: JEFF BUSBY.

Why do you think this production of “EVITA” resonates so strongly with audiences? I believe it resonates with audiences because it is a story of a strong female who defied the odds and rose to the top from the lower classes. She is a relatable figure and an audience loves an underdog. The other thing that has a powerful resonance are the incredibly moving and memorable music and lyrics by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice.

PHOTOS: JEFF BUSBY.

What are some of your career highlights from performing in the West End in London? I have been very lucky in London and worked with some amazing performers, creatives and at some really wonderful venues in some brilliant shows. After performing in the original Australian production of “The Lion King” I was transferred to the West End cast, that show has paved the way for me in many ways and I am very grateful to Disney for that opportunity. Other highlights include; a production of “Guys and Dolls” at The Royal Exchange, a quirky and renowned theatre and it was a reimagined version of the show set in Harlem with an Afro-American cast, “Sweet Bird of Youth” directed by Marianne Elliott and starring Kim Cattrall at The Old Vic and later the same play at Chichester Festival directed by Jonathan Kent starring Marcia Gay Harden. I performed in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre, the 25th anniversary company of “Miss Saigon” in the

West End and earlier this year I worked with Paulo Szot in Leonard Bernstein’s Mass at the Royal Festival Hall conducted by Marin Alsop. Performing in “Evita” as Che in Australia is one of the biggest highlights of my career. What do you enjoy most about coming home to Australia to perform? Being at home and spending time with my family and the friends I grew up with is a highlight. It’s so good to enjoy the brilliant lifestyle we have in Australia that we can easily take for granted, living overseas I realise how lucky we are to live in a beautiful country like Australia. In between your performances, is there anything you are looking forward to seeing/doing in Melbourne? I am looking forward to having a good rest in between the Sydney and Melbourne contracts. I will be spending a lot of quality time with my family and friends. I plan to visit country Victoria and see my friends in Trentham and Daylesford and get

some fresh air and space in the country. I’d like to also visit the Hot Springs in Mornington Peninsula and, of course, enjoy lots of good Melbourne coffee. What do you have coming up for 2019? Are you heading back to London? “EVITA” has really been a homecoming for me. I hope that it will create a spring board for me to get more roles on the Australian stage. I am an Australian and a British citizen and I have a base in both places. I have some work lined up already in London and Australia for 2019. The most exciting thing coming up for me is a project I have been creating with my writing partner over the last five years, we are called Kansley & Lidert and our first original musical (which we workshopped earlier this year) has been picked up to do a West End run late 2019/early 2020. “EVITA” plays at Arts Centre Melbourne’s State Theatre from 5 December. 1300 182 183. artscentremelbourne.com.au or evitathemusical.com.au

WHERE IN MELBOURNE

 Melbourne is a city well suited for rooftop drinking. With quite a few sky-high options to choose from, we have picked our favourite places to sit back and relax as the sun sets over the city. For more great bars in Melbourne visit wheretraveler.com

WHE RE I D E C E M B E R 2018

Easey’s If you fancy something even more exciting then a mere rooftop bar, then Easey’s is the place to go. Five stories up, sits a decommissioned graffitied train carriage that houses some of the best burgers in town, alongside mac n cheese, hot dawgs and potato cakes. Easey’s have a fabulous selection of cold beers as well as cool cocktails. Milkshakes, cider, wine and some 'bang for your buck' cocktail jugs are available too.

Madame Brussels Madame Brussels is the premier garden party to be seen at this summer, promising plenty of fancy food from cheese platters and charcuterie plates to divine sandwiches. The drink selection includes cocktail jugs to share and plenty of punch to go around. Try the 'Madame’s Fruity Double D Cups' or the 'Gin Garden'. Most importantly, the terrace features spectacular views over Melbourne’s glorious cityscape.

LOOP Roof LOOP Roof Cocktail Bar and Garden is the perfect place to spend a summery Melbourne evening. Relax as you are surrounded by a luscious exotic garden that boasts a subtle misting system to keep you cool. Cocktails, beer and wine abound whilst fresh tacos and Japanese fried chicken are the dishes of choice. Grab a 'Rickroll' or a 'Kiss My Ananas' highball and wind down as the golden glow descends over the terraces of Melbourne.
