AWARD-WINNING MUSICAL

‘Falsettos’ Comes to Chapel Off Chapel The Tony Award-winning Broadway musical “Falsettos” comes to Prahran’s Chapel off Chapel theatre this month as part of the Midsumma Festival. “Falsettos” revolves around the life of a charming, intelligent, neurotic gay man named Marvin, his wife, lover, about-to-be-Bar-Mitzvahed son, their psychiatrist and the lesbians next door. When tragedy strikes and Marvin’s lover is diagnosed with AIDS during the 1980’s pandemic, all participants must put their differences aside and unite. It’s an achingly poignant, yet hilarious look at the infinite possibilities that make up a modern family and a beautiful reminder that love can tell a million stories. Starring Don Winsor, Sarah Shahinian and Sam Ward, this production is not to be missed. 1–11 February, Chapel off Chapel, 12 Little Chapel Street, Prahran. stageart.com.au

WHITE NIGHT MELBOURNE

WHITE NIGHT

Photo: SDP Media.

This month Melbourne is lighting up for a night to remember. By Jenny Burns WHITE NIGHT MELBOURNE is creatively and dramatically lighting up Melbourne’s streets, public spaces, landmark buildings and cultural institutions from 7pm on Saturday 17 February until 7am the following morning. With a theme of “What If”, this year’s event features over 100 free cultural events and activities including exhibitions, street performances, illuminations, installations, film screenings, music, dance and interactive events. “White Night should challenge perceptions and conventions, it should captivate and motivate, incite and inspire. It should be uplifting and exhausting, it should shock the senses and lift the spirit,” explained White Night Artistic Director and Executive Producer, David Atkins. “The proposition of ‘What If?’ is designed to do just that. This proposition will inform and be reflected in much of White Night’s program content and it is my hope that people will take 8 WHERE MELBOURNE I FEBRUARY 2018 I wheretraveler.com

away more than just a great night out. White Night will connect them to each other and to a proposition that will inspire them to embrace their differences and be gentler, kinder and more sympathetic to everyone.” Celebrating its 6th anniversary, highlights of this year’s event include a 3D video mapping of the Royal Exhibition Building based on “What If”. It explores such questions as: What if the building could transform? What if the architecture came to life? What if the past returned to the present? What if the building was a conductor or a passage to another dimension? Taking pride of place in Melbourne Museum Plaza is The Serpent Mother, a metallic reptile which sees flames and mechanical automation combine to create a Dionysian world of magic and chaos. The kinetic sculpture features a skeletal spine of 92 vertebrae which extends over 50 metres.

Liquid Sky.

Above and top right: Verandah Virtuosos.

Also located in this area is The White Knight Messenger. Over five metres high and with wings that span six metres, the Messenger is bought to life by eight puppeteers and performers. Birdmen are huge illuminated creatures which are roaming Melbourne’s streets operated by mysterious men. They look like skeletal pterodactyls from another world but can be best defined as a new species—the Technosaurus—a creature from the past and the future combined. Liquid Sky, located at Federation Square, is a 150-metre holographic Skynet suspended to harness the wind and dance dramatically, as if hanging in mid-air. Little Bourke Street is being transformed into a snowy delight through snow machines, special effects lighting and snow crystal performers. Live performances are again a major feature of this year’s White Night with many locations hosting artists covering a range of interests and tastes. and rock musicians, tap dancers, brass players, jugglers and percussionists on rotation for the 12 hours of White Night. World Stage at Birrarung Marr is a celebration of live music, dance, fun and song. It features various artists from a crosssection of the 140 cultures that make up the City of Melbourne. Uptown Funk, on the corner of Lonsdale and Russell Streets, is offering a 12-hour music marathon of the best jazz, blues and funk bands in Melbourne. Fashion City pays homage to Melbourne’s crown as Australia’s fashion capital. A 50-metre long catwalk in Bourke Street Mall features models, dancers and vocalists. Melbourne’s major cultural institutions including Arts Centre Melbourne, Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI), Melbourne Museum, National Gallery of Victoria (NGV International on St Kilda Road and The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia at Federation Square) and the State Library of Victoria are offering special programming over the entire 12 hours. ■ For more information on White Night Melbourne visit whitenight.com.au/Melbourne wheretraveler.com I FEBRUARY 2018 I MELBOURNE WHERE 9

SUMMER NIGHT FUN

SUMMER NIGHT FUN After the sun sets, Melbourne comes alive in summer. By Jenny Burns FEBRUARY IS TRADITIONALLY one of Melbourne’s hottest

months and all indications suggest this year will be no exception. Hot days usually mean warm balmy nights which are ideal to explore the countless outdoor entertainment offerings staged all around the city. Here are six of our favourite February evening experiences. THE MSO AT MYER MUSIC BOWL Every year the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) gives a series of free concerts at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl (mso.com.au). Three concerts are being held this month— “Romance and Classics” on 7 February, “Hot Summer Night!” on 10 February and “From MSO, With Love” on 14 February. While the performance doesn’t start

until 7.30pm it’s a good idea to get there early as these concerts are very popular with ‘picnic loving music fans’. Gates open at 4.30pm. SHAKESPEARE IN THE PARK Watching The Australian Shakespeare Company’s (shakespeareaustralia.com.au) performance of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is a magical experience in many different ways. There’s the magic within Shakespeare’s classic comedy. Then there is the magic of sitting in the Royal Botanic Gardens on a balmy Melbourne evening watching the play and, at sunset, bats and birds returning ‘home’. The company’s new production of the play is also magical. Performances start at 8.30pm until 3 February and then at 8pm after 3 February.

SUMMER NIGHT FUN

MOVIES UNDER THE STARS There’s nothing quite like watching a great movie at an outdoor cinema. Moonlight Cinema (moonlight.com.au/melbourne/program/) located within the Royal Botanic Gardens is one of the oldest outdoor cinema experiences in Melbourne. For something a little different, the Melbourne Cricket Ground is staging two open air cinema nights on its hallowed turf on 23 and 24 February (mcg.org.au/things-to-do/cinemaat-the-g). NIGHT MARKETS Visit one of Melbourne’s night markets and you’ll find some great food to try, goods to buy and plenty of entertainment. Queen Victoria Market (thenightmarket.com.au) stays open every Wednesday night from 5pm to 10pm. South Melbourne Night Market (southmelbournenightmarket.com.au) is held every Thursday in February from 5.30pm to 9.30pm. TWILIGHT CONCERTS AT THE ZOO Melbourne Zoo’s Zoo Twilights program (zootwilights.org.au) held on Friday and Saturday nights offers the chance to hear great music and explore the Zoo. Gates open at 5.30pm ensuring there is time to visit your favourite animals before support acts begin around 7pm and the main show around 8pm. All proceeds go to Zoos Victoria’s ongoing commitment to fight extinction of the 21 most at-risk species in Victoria.

Blake’s all ready for Miss Understanding Jenny Burns speaks to Blake Appelqvist about his role in the new production of the Australian musical “Priscilla Queen of the Desert”. Blake Appelqvist.

WHEN BLAKE APPELQVIST

takes to the stage in “Priscilla Queen of the Desert” you can be assured he is fully prepared for his role. He extensively researched his character in the weeks leading up to him appearing as drag queen, Miss Understanding, in this very Australian, fun musical. This research included spending several weeks donning at least part of his costume around his new Melbourne home. “I have been washing the dishes and vacuuming in high heels,” he explained with a laugh. He has also been watching a number of live drag shows and movies. At the same time playing a drag queen is nothing new for Appelqvist. He estimates by the time his role in Priscilla finishes he will have spent around two and a half years in drag! He’s just finished touring in the Australian premiere production of “Kinky Boots”. “I played an Angel, a bubbly thing who was just a hoot,” Appelqvist said. “However Miss Understanding is very different to an Angel. A drag queen from Sydney, Miss Understanding knows what she is doing, she is a bit crazy and she’s sassy. She also doesn’t take any nonsense from anyone.” Based on the Oscar-winning Australian film of the same name, “Priscilla Queen of the Desert” is the story of three friends who hop aboard a battered old bus bound for Alice Springs to put on the show of a lifetime. This new stage production, which celebrates the 10th anniversary of the original show, features more than 500 costumes, 200 headdresses and a non-stop hit parade of dance-floor classics 14 WHERE MELBOURNE I FEBRUARY 2018 I wheretraveler.com

including “It’s Raining Men”, “I Will Survive”, “I Love the Nightlife”, “Finally” and Appelqvist’s show stopping number “What’s Love Got To Do With It”. Originally from Canberra, Appelqvist moved to Melbourne to study at the Victorian College of the Arts. He had no hesitation in staying in Melbourne once he finished his course in 2015. “I fell in love with Melbourne and have a strong relationship with the city. It’s part of my identity,” he said. “Melbourne also has a very strong vibrant arts scene ensuring there are lots of opportunities here.” Appelqvist made his professional debut in The Production Company’s “West Side Story”, played Ziegfeld Tenor in “Funny Girl” and understudied the leading role in “Ghost The Musical”. Since returning to Melbourne after touring with “Kinky Boots” he has been busy settling into his new apartment in South Yarra. He and his partner both love the area. He cites Prahran Market as one of his ‘should visit’ recommendations for any Melbourne visitor. “There’s a great atmosphere and it is an authentic local experience,” he said. He’s also a great fan of the Tan which circumnavigates the Royal Botanic Gardens. “It’s great to run around or take the dog for a walk,” he explained. Applelquist also expects he may be spending time with fellow cast members revisiting the many bars and restaurants around the Regent Theatre—another very Melbourne experience for locals and visitors alike! ■ “Priscilla Queen of the Desert” is currently playing at Melbourne’s Regent Theatre. “Priscilla Queen of the Desert” is playing at Melbourne’s Regent Theatre. This iconic Australian musical is based on the Oscar-winning Australian film of the same name. It tells of three friends who hop aboard a battered old bus bound for Alice Springs to put on the show of a lifetime. Their epic journey is a heart-warming story of self-discovery, sassiness and acceptance. Like the movie, the stage show features plenty of glitter, an array of more than 500 costumes, 200 headdresses and a nonstop hit parade of dance-floor classics including “It’s Raining Men”, “I will Survive” and “Finally”. The production stars Tony Sheldon as Bernadette, David Harris as Tick and Euan Doidge as Felicia. Supporting these three leads are Robert Grubb as outback mechanic Bob, Emma Powell as burly bartender Shirl, Blake Appelqvist as Miss Understanding, Adele Parkinson as hotel entertainment manager Marion, plus Angelique Cassimatis, Samm Hagen and Cle Morgan as sassy disco singers The Divas and Lena Cruz as Bob’s wife Cynthia.

tells of a demonic sock puppet that wreaks havoc on relationships and faith in a small Texas town. Something devilish is lurking in a church basement puppet show in Cypress, Texas. His name is Tyrone. He may look like an innocent sock puppet, but when he infiltrates the angstridden church youth group and takes possession of Jason’s arm, all hell breaks loose. Spectacularly foul-mouthed and wickedly scandalous, Tyrone shocks the congregation with his outrageous insinuations, exposing their deepest secrets— and teaching us all about love, grief and what it means to be human. Stars of the show include Gyton Grantley as the shy and awkward Jason, Alison Whyte as his mother Margery, Grant Piro as Pastor Greg, Jake Speer as Timothy and Morgana O’Reilly as Jessica. The production celebrates some of the world’s most publicly adored singers through their own words and legendary songs. Robinson captures the vulnerabilities, resilience, humour, doubts and fears of such performers as Judy Garland, Edith Piaf, Shirley Bassey, Barbra Streisand, Patsy Cline and Maria Callas. Their fascinating lives are woven into interludes between songs, providing insight into the women behind the voices. Accompanied by three musicians, “The Show Goes On” spotlights Robinson’s great musical abilities as she sings everything from operatic arias to power ballads.

AUS TR ALIAN L ANDSC APE HIGHLIGHTED AT BENDIGO AR T GALLERY Louiseann King’s ongoing interest in the fragility and beauty of nature is the subject of “arbor temporis momentum”, the 2017 Bendigo Art Gallery ‘Going Solo’ initiative exhibition. The installation offers a rich and immersive imagined landscape where objects foraged from bushland near King’s home and studio in Eganstown are woven in poetic layers with metal, bronze and wax castings, referencing the past, the present, and a sense of in-between, blurred or undefined time. King has collaborated with renowned Australian sound artist Philip Samartzis to create an evocative, bushland soundscape which is embedded within the installation.

Old Treasury Spotlights Conscription The Old Treasury Building’s latest exhibition, “A Nation Divided: the Great War and Conscription”, tells the story of Conscription during the First World War. The debate over conscription was amongst the most bitter, divisive and violent ever to consume the nation. From 1916–1917 thousands of impassioned speeches were made, endless newspaper columns were written, and mass meetings and huge rallies were held throughout Australia. Two referendums were held, the first in 1916 then another in 1917. On each occasion, a majority of Australians voted ‘No’. In the end Australia was one of few combatant nations to field an army comprised entirely of volunteers. The exhibition includes posters and other materials from the time. Celebrating Chinese Culture at Ballarat An exhibition at Sovereign Hill’s Gold Museum features one of the most extensive Chinese artefact collections, and for the first time in over five decades, reawakens Loong, one of Australia’s oldest dragons. “Re-awakening the Dragon” showcases items once used by Ballarat’s Chinese community for social, cultural and religious ceremonies, including the spectacular processional dragon. Another highlight is parts of a processional lion, which, like the dragon, was used by the Chinese community to celebrate Queen Victoria’s 1897 Diamond Jubilee. The exhibition also includes costumes and banners used in the celebrations, which included a major procession. Chinese temple artefacts dating back to the 1850–1870s are also on display. STREET OF STYLE ENJOY COLLINS STREET’S STUNNING ARCHITECTURE, AND FASCINATING HISTORY, AS YOU SNAP UP STYLISH BARGAINS AND TERRIFIC TREATS.

COLLINS STREET exudes style and

glamour. It’s a boulevard of chic designer shopping, five-star hotels, exclusive jewellers, grand heritage buildings, churches, theatres and private clubs. It’s Melbourne’s premier commercial streetscape with a number of Australia’s largest corporations calling Collins Street home and it has also been the setting for some of Australia’s best known paintings. While there have been many changes over the years with the construction of a number of modern buildings, its fine nineteenth-century heritage is still strongly evident. Then there are the wonderful plane trees, which line the street looking particularly stunning at night under lights. One of the reasons for Collins Street’s continual appeal is its ability to change with the times. Since 1837 it has been rebuilt several times. It’s also been extended—the last occurring with the continuation of the street across Spencer Street railway lines and into Docklands. However what hasn’t changed is the street’s appeal as both a business and leisure hub. A Collins Street address is still coveted by major businesses and professionals. The Regent and Athenaeum Theatres continue to attract theatregoers from around the world while worshippers flock to its three historic churches—the Collins Street Baptist Church, St Michael’s Uniting Church and Scots' Church. Given the quality of their neighbours, several luxury hotels fit perfectly in the mix including Novotel Melbourne on Collins, Sofitel Melbourne on Collins, Grand Hyatt Melbourne and The Westin Melbourne. 26 WHERE MELBOURNE I FEBRUARY 2018 I wheretraveler.com

It comes as no surprise to discover the Block is classified by the National Trust and is on the register of the National Estate. There’s so much interest in the

Lady Hopetoun, haughty wife of the popular Victorian governor Lord Hopetoun, founded a Victorian Ladies’ Work Association which established tearooms at number 6 Block Arcade in 1893. The association disbanded in 1907 but the tearooms named after its founder have survived in their original location to this day. Hopetoun Tea Rooms is one of more than 30 fascinating outlets within the arcade, offering everything from the latest fashion to unique gifts. Then there is the shopping. From as early as anyone can remember, Collins Street has been the place to shop. Today it’s no different, the only change being the sheer number of options. Serious fashion buyers

DAYTRIPPING EXPLORE

Daytripping By Jenny Burns

Koonya Beach, Mornington Peninsula.Photo: PMG.

WHILE MELBOURNE OFFERS plenty to keep locals and visitors alike amused for weeks, we are also blessed with a number of fascinating villages and towns all within an hour or so drive from the heart of the city. Some, such as the villages of the Yarra Valley and the Dandenongs, have been popular for many years, whilst others are now just being recognised for their great restaurants, interesting shops and, in many cases, fascinating historical buildings. As an added bonus many are easily accessed by either car, public transport or on a guided coach tour. Head north of the city and you’ll discover such delights as Castlemaine and Daylesford. Like their ‘bigger city cousins’—Ballarat and Bendigo—these villages owe their existence to the discovery of gold in the 1850s. Castlemaine’s history and heritage is visible in its fine public buildings, wide streets, ornate hotels and century-old

shops selling everything from gourmet food to antiques and art. Castlemaine also has a thriving arts and cultural community and has made its mark as a leading regional arts centre. Its gardens are another feature. The gardens at Buda Historic Home and Garden date back to the 19th-century. ‘Taking the waters’ has long been a favourite pastime of visitors to Daylesford and Hepburn Springs. Given the towns and surrounding areas have Australia’s richest concentration of mineral springs, it’s easy to see why. Each weekend hundreds of Melburnians head to the twin towns for a healthy relaxing weekend. Many can be found exploring the mineral springs. Around 70 springs bubble freely through the ground. Spa treatments are another favourite pastime for visitors, as is walking the historic streets lined with cafés, restaurants, galleries, antique and speciality stores.

Geelong is in the midst of reinvention with industrial spaces transformed into creative hubs. Cool cafés and galleries are popping up all the time. If the beach is more your scene then consider a trip to some of the villages on our two Peninsulas—Mornington and Bellarine. Sorrento on the Mornington Peninsula can lay claim to being the oldest part of the state as in 1803 a short-lived small convict settlement was established here. Queenscliff, on the Bellarine Peninsula, also has a long and colourful history. Many reminders of its history can be seen in imposing Victorian-era buildings and a huge military fortress guarding the entrance to Port Phillip Bay. You can visit both in a day by taking the Queenscliff to Sorrento car and passenger ferry. Central and West Gippsland has long been a favourite destination for Melburnians searching for great cheese, meat, fruit and wine. And now the rest of the world is discovering the region’s great gourmet delights. Of course no trip to Victoria is complete without a visit to Phillip Island to see our very cute little penguins that each night come in from the ocean and waddle across the sand to their burrows. Phillip Island is also home to the Koala Conservation Centre which offers the perfect environment to see koalas close up and, importantly, in their natural environment. Also lookout for wallabies, echidnas and native birds. Seal lovers flock to Seal Rocks where there’s an Australian fur seal colony which is thought to be one of the largest in the country. On your way to Phillip Island you’ll pass another of our well-known attractions—the Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne. Here you will discover more than 100,000 Australian plants and landscapes, set in 363 hectares of natural bushland. Highlights include the Australian Garden, which follows a journey of water from the arid inland landscapes of central Australia down to the coastal fringes of the continent.

DAYLESFORD’S MAGICAL WATERS

Hepburn Bathhouse & Spa.

‘TAKING THE WATERS’ has long been a

favourite pastime of visitors to Daylesford and Hepburn Springs. Given the towns and surrounding areas have Australia’s richest concentration of mineral springs it’s easy to see why. However, there’s a lot more to Daylesford and Hepburn Springs than magical waters. Wonderful food, fascinating shops and galleries and interesting attractions are just some of the many delights on offer. Just the same, any visit should include a mineral water experience and there’s no better place than the Hepburn Bathhouse & Spa. The original Edwardian bathhouse in the Mineral Springs Reserve, built approximately 1895, has undergone a $13 million makeover

and now boasts more than 30 wet and dry treatment rooms, making it one of the largest spas in the country. fresh local ingredients. The Hepburn Pavilion Café has been offering hospitality to locals and visitors alike since 1908 and provides an atmospheric environment for a meal, or fabulous coffee and cake, before or after your Hepburn Bathhouse and Spa experience. Not far from the bathhouse is another of the region’s popular attractions, Lavandula Swiss Italian Farm. Here you can learn about the lavender and olives grown on the property, wander around herb, cottage and potage gardens and buy locally made goods in the shop. These goods make great presents, especially if you’re looking for something uniquely Australian. Indeed, there’s plenty of great retail therapy available in the area. You’ll find everything from great art at galleries such as The Convent to Alpaca Passion, which sells alpaca-made products. While Daylesford is an easy day trip from Melbourne (it takes around 90 minutes), it’s worth staying a few days. Then you can take full advantage of its many delights. MELBOURNE’S BRILLIANT BARS

By Peter McBrearty

Espresso Zabione,

FOR THOSE VISITORS TO MELBOURNE who may find

themselves feeling the time is right for an excellent cocktail (or two…) help is very definitely at hand. The Everleigh (Upstairs, 150–156 Gertrude Street, Fitzroy. 9416 2229) is a Melbourne mecca for anyone with an appreciation for a serve of tangible atmosphere along with forensic attention to detail in their cocktails. Located above Belles Hot Chicken, The Everleigh will immediately transport patrons back to a more hedonistic past era, recalling the cocktail heyday of the 20s and 30s, whether they elect to sit at the bar and watch the skills of the talented bartenders at work, or prefer to recline in the leather booths and enjoy the polished and knowledgeable table service. This is a bar where juices are squeezed by hand as each cocktail is created, which produces its own branded blocks of ice made from purified water, and which has accordingly been the recipient of a number of awards over the years, which will come as no surprise at all to anyone fortunate enough to have had an opportunity to enjoy one of their carefully crafted cocktails. The Everleigh also features a private room available for parties of up to 15 people, making it an ideal location for those who might like to catch up with friends or work associates and enjoy an evening of crowd free indulgence. Be it for a quick visit to sample something a little different, a post dinner nightcap after dining in one of the many nearby restaurants, a longer night of cocktail experimentation, or even as a romantic getaway from the city crowds, The Everleigh ticks all the boxes as one of Melbourne’s premier cocktail destinations. Almost qualifying as a Fitzroy icon after more than 17 years creating esoteric cocktails (and having won a number of local

and international bar and Eau De Vie. bartender awards over those years) is Black Pearl (304 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy. 9417 0455). For patrons wishing to enjoy their cocktails above the madding crowd, those in the know will head upstairs to The Attic, where limited numbers and table service allow serious cocktail aficionados to focus on the business at hand. Lily Blacks (12 Meyers Place, Melbourne. 9654 4887) is another essential stop for anyone on a Melbourne cocktail pilgrimage. Hand cut ice again features, and cocktails are a serious business here, although always served with a dash of good humour. Open until 3am seven days a week, Lily Blacks ensures that nobody ever need endure a cocktail free evening. In true Melbourne fashion, Eau De Vie (1 Malthouse Lane, Melbourne. 0412 825 441) can be a little difficult to find, located down a small laneway, where an unmarked door identifiable only by a metal handle, reveals a dark interior laden with leather, wooden panels, and shelves filled with bottles of high quality alcohol. Overcrowding is unlikely to ever be an issue, as EDV is a table service only venue. There is a highquality bar menu, while the talented bar staff deliver a wide variety of exceptionally good cocktails, wine and beer. wheretraveler.com I FEBRUARY 2018 I MELBOURNE WHERE 61

LES CLEFS D’OR

LES CLEFS D’OR

By Nik Adams

S TATE DIREC TOR FOR VIC TORIA

Les Clefs d’Or members at the key ceremony of Liam Harris.

n Melbourne is famous for its shopping and there is a new addition for guests to enjoy. St. Collins Lane is a new centre located on Collins Street. Concierge were invited to visit and see what developments are happening there. The tour included stopping at several of its high-end stores including the first Debenhams store in Australia. Afterwards we relaxed and enjoyed a glass of champagne at Runyas Room.

LES CLEFS D’OR has started the

new year in the best possible way by welcoming its latest member. Liam Harris from Crown Towers was successful in his interview for membership to Les Clefs d’Or and the members recently had the pleasure of being invited to his key ceremony. Held in one of Crown Towers’ suites, Liam was ‘pinned’ with his keys by Les Clefs d’Or Australia President Peter McBrearty and Crown Towers General Manager Shaun D’Cruz. It was a honour to see such a well-respected and hardworking concierge receive this honour. Welcome to the family Liam!

n The first Grand Slam of the year, the Australian Open, has just finished and what an amazing tournament it was. Tennis Australia invited the Melbourne concierge to visit and see the 2018 championship. There were great dining options with restaurants such as Nobu and Rockpool on site. There were also quite a number of activities for kids to enjoy with a kids zone being set up with ziplines and climbing walls included. And, of course, there was fabulous tennis as always. Be sure to mark your calendars for next year’s Australian Open!
