WHE RE I JA N U A R Y 2019

Q: What’s your favourite thing about Melbourne in January?

A: The Kooyong Classic, which is the warm up tournament before the Australian Open. It’s played in a more intimate setting allowing you to get up close to some excellent tennis. Q: With the weather heating up, where should people go to cool off?

A: Anywhere oceanside is great but if you want to try something different why not take a drive to the Dandenongs. It’s remarkably cool in the summer and it’s a great drive through the forest! Q: How will you be cooling down this summer?

A: When the heat gets to be too much I love to take in a film. My favourite is the Thornbury Picture House which is a converted petrol station that plays a great variety of films. Q: Do you have any tips for attending the Australian Open?

A: I always suggest going early in the tournament and getting a ground pass. Early in the tournament you will see some of the big names playing on the secondary courts. You can see your friendly concierge who can

usually work some concierge magic to source some amazing tickets as well! Q: Describe your perfect Melbourne day.

A: My perfect day starts in Collingwood at Proud Mary which serves one of Melbourne’s best breakfasts and has some of the best coffee in town. The rest of the day would be spent enjoying my favourite past time; walking around photographing our beautiful city. You can see many of my best photographs on display in the public areas of the InterContinental Melbourne The Rialto. The perfect spot for lunch is Archie’s on Gertrude Street. Then I would head to Fitzroy Gardens to photograph one of our many beautiful green spaces. Dinner would be at Saxe on Queen Street. Owner/Chef Joe Grbac is one of my favourite chefs and he has created one of Melbourne’s best dining experiences.

THIS SUMMER MELBOURNE’S IMMIGRATION Museum presents a ground-breaking new exhibition, “Love”. The exhibition presents Australian love stories of all kinds that traverse landscapes of time, gender, orientation, ethnicity, age, and distance. We speak with exhibition curators Dr Moya McFadzean and Isabel Smith from Museums Victoria about this fascinating exhibition. Where did the idea of an exhibition focussing on the concept of love come from? The Immigration Museum has been looking at exhibition ideas which explore universal human themes that we all have in common. The idea for an exhibition about love was inspired by a conversation between the Immigration Museum and Heide Museum of Modern Art about how our two organisations might collaborate on a project. And “Love” resonates both with the complex love stories amongst the artist community at Heide, as well as the personal Australian stories of love that we wanted to bring to life at the Immigration Museum. What was the biggest challenge in creating this exhibition? Love is such an enormous theme so one of the biggest challenges for us has been to try to capture love in all its diversity, both in terms of types of love as well as voices and experiences. So, for example, this exhibition is not just about romantic love but love amongst families and friends. And we not only explore the joy and tenderness of love, but heartbreak and the grief of loss. In order to achieve this diversity across time, place and people, we not only trawled our own collections at Museums Victoria and Heide, but we drew on our community networks to give voice to new stories. What are some of the most significant objects/works featured in “Love”? We are featuring some very poignant items from our migration collections, such as a baby blanket brought by a Sudanese refugee family to Australia, and a series of adoring love letters written between a post-World War II English migrant couple in the months before they married. We are also excited to be displaying for the first-time objects from our First Peoples collections. These include stunning late

nineteenth century mourning garments from Oro Province in Papua New Guinea which have been beautifully interpreted by a young PNG artist. We also feature a rare portrait of Wurundjeri leader William Barak. These collection items are complemented by wonderful new commissioned works by local artists, poets and performers. In terms of artworks from the Heide collections, visitors to the exhibition will be able to see works by artists including Sidney Nolan, Joy Hester, Albert Tucker, Mirka Mora and Richard Larter. Love is at the centre of all our relationships. What are some of the ‘love stories’ from the exhibition that resonated the most with you? We have found working on this exhibition to be a very emotional experience, as we have been immersed in deeply moving love stories. People have been so generous with sharing their experiences and treasured objects. We recorded intimate interviews with over thirty people which have been produced as short audio stories that visitors can listen to and we think they will be as moved by them as we have been. We have loved the story of a young First Peoples couple from Queensland sharing their devotion to their newborn baby; delighted in the warm friendship between two Maori women who share their traditional creative practices; been inspired by the romance between two Melbourne women who formalised their marriage vows after the marriage equality act; and shed tears as we listened to a member of the Stolen Generation reading a letter to the mother he was taken from. What is the one thing you hope visitors take away with them after experiencing the exhibition? We hope “Love” will be a deeply moving experience for our visitors that inspires them to reflect on their own relationships and empathise with the experiences of other people. Our ultimate dream would be that visitors not only leave behind their own stories in the exhibition but feel inspired to share their own expressions of love beyond the museum walls. “Love” is on now at the Immigration Museum, 400 Flinders Street, Melbourne. Free with museum entry. museumsvictoria.com.au/immigrationmuseum

Bre t s o

We chat to Brent Hill about his lead role as Dewey in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical “School of Rock”.

22

WHE RE I JA N U A R Y 2019

ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER’S SMASH hit rock musical, “School of Rock” has made its way to Melbourne. Based on the hit film, this Australian premiere production features Brent Hill as music teacher and wannabe rock star Dewey Finn, and Amy Lehpamer as headmistress Rosalie Mullins, alongside a stunning cast of child actors. We spoke to Brent about his role, the challenges of playing Dewey and rocking out on stage. For those that haven’t seen the brilliant film “School of Rock”, can you tell us a bit about the story of the musical and your character of Dewey. “School of Rock” follows Dewey Finn, a passionate wannabe rock-star without much anchor in reality about his dreams. He’s kicked out of his band, and finds himself facing eviction from his best-friend Ned Schneebly’s flat if he doesn’t pay the much-overdue rent.

Role

He intercepts a phone call meant for Ned, and in pursuit of rent money, suddenly Dewey is posing as a substitute teacher under his friend’s name at the upper-class Horace Green Prep School. Dewey doesn’t connect with the over-disciplined kids until he realises that they can play music (!) and suddenly his dream of winning the Battle of the Bands is reforged anew. So in taking advantage of the situation, he realises he CAN teach them something, and that is about rock, music, passion, self-belief and sticking it to the man. And, of course, along the way they teach him a few lessons too. Ultimately, it’s about empowerment through music. Were you familiar with the film before you took on the role? Definitely. I had seen the film probably about ten times before hearing about

the man is a musical theatre demon and I am epically grateful for his attitude, humour and hard work.

TOP LEFT AND TOP RIGHT: PHOTOS: MATTHEW MURPHY. BOTTOM RIGHT: PHOTO: JIM LEE.

Singing the songs of Andrew Lloyd Webber must be a dream come true. Do you have a favourite moment or song from the show? As a kid who grew up wearing out “Cats” and “Jesus Christ Superstar” on VHS – YES IT IS! “You’re in the Band” is particularly awesome. It’s the spark of the whole story scheme, the kids get to rock out, and the song is rad. Getting to watch Amy Lehpamer as Principal Mullins smash it out in “Where Did the Rock Go?” is also a primo highlight. But definitely the Battle of the Band contest at the end. Rocking out as a band, an actual band, LIVE.

the musical. The film is just brilliant, so pleasing to watch, like a rock-themed “Sound of Music”. What’s the biggest challenge with the role of Dewey? Stamina. And energy output. It’s a lot. Rehearsals were a lot about building stamina. Dewey rarely leaves the stage, particularly in the first half. Add in to this that you’re high belt rock singing, jumping off desks, slinging guitars around kids, all while wearing various woollen sweater vests. So you gotta make sure you’re hydrated with enough fuel-to-go. It’s a balance, still figuring it out as we go. Fortunately, they’ve figured out the high workload from previous productions and usually have an alternate Dewey who does a few shows a week. We have Joe Kosky;

but excellent things. Peter Carroll told me it’s “what theatre should be”. Big words, but it’s Virginia Gay, so I don’t doubt it. Also, the new “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child”! John Tiffany also directed Amy and I in “Once” a few years ago, so we’re looking forward to seeing him again and the new work. Plus seeing Madeleine Jones and Paula Arundell. “School of Rock” is now playing at Her Majesty’s Theatre, 219 Exhibition Street, Melbourne. au.schoolofrockthemusical.com

How have the shows been so far? What has been the audience reaction? Fantastic. The auditorium energy is just electric overflow – totally the right vibe for this show. And even if we don’t start there, we definitely end there. I love that this show ends in a rock concert, it’s so appropriate. And it also means we all leave feelin’ damn good. There’s some kind of chemical reaction of joy when you see kids (let alone anyone) pick up an instrument and play it exceedingly well. So the reaction has been fantastic, Melbourne knows how to rock. What is it like working with such a huge child cast? It’s been brilliant. Before rehearsals began, I saw the cast sheet and you see those 36 kids and, of course, it’s a little daunting, but getting to know and work with them has been wonderful. They’re all excellent; super talented, warm, friendly, and totally professional. They’re the best. In between your performances, is there anything you are looking forward to seeing/doing here in Melbourne in January? Yes, I can’t wait to FINALLY see “Calamity Jane”. I’ve heard nothing
