TOASTIES WITH THE MOSTIES

TOASTIES

with the Mosties Australia’s ubiquitous go-to meal, the toasted sandwich, has undergone a gourmet evolution, writes Penny Watson. THE HUMBLE HAM, cheese and tomato

toastie—or jaffle—is as essential to Australian cuisine as Vegemite. It’s your go-to for a cheap, portable meal that somehow passes for breakfast, lunch or dinner. It’s high on flavour without being deep-fried and it’s a café-style meal that manages to cover four of the five basic food groups. Tick. Tick. Tick. But like all foods in the cuisine capital, there are always new takes on old recipes. Get a taste for the new-age toastie at these Melbourne venues. MAKER & MONGER In the heart of Melbourne foodie mecca, Prahran Market, Maker & Monger (Stall 25, located inside the Harvest Hall, Prahran Market, 163–165 Commercial Road, South Yarra; makerandmonger.com.au) cheese bar does a piquant trade dishing out allthings-cheesy. Dedicated cheesemonger Anthony Femia’s cutesy restored French food cart sells cold cheeses, but it’s the hot, melty, gooey dishes that get punters in. Femia’s ‘grillz’ are toasties made from

sourdough bread and crisped to perfection with cultured butter. Favourites include an ‘All American’ made with two cheddar varieties mingling with onions and parsley, and the Southern tweaked ‘Pimenton and Cayenne’, made with a pimento cheese mix that oozes red peppers and pickles. The Grand Dairy Award-winning ‘Fondue’, made from Heidi gruyere and Bulla crème fraiche, is inspired by the retro European hot cheese dish. Traditionalists should sink their teeth into a ‘Raclette’ where perfectly fried bread combines with the still-bubbling Swiss cheese. BAD FRANKIE Just off Smith Street, Bad Frankie (141 Greeves Street, Fitzroy; badfrankie.com) looks like a classic Euro wine bar, but the ‘jaffles and local spirits’ sign swinging out front tells an Australian tale. The bar is named after infamous Van Diemen’s Land governor, John Franklin, who outlawed small pot stills in the early 19th century. Riffing off this historical hiccup, Bad Frankie showcases small-batch Australian gins and

8 WHERE MELBOURNE I NOVEMBER 2017 I wheretraveler.com

whiskeys and complements them with an Aussie jaffle menu. For the uninitiated, a jaffle is a 1950s-invented iron toastie maker that presses the crusts together to contain the filling. The ‘Classic’ jaffle at Bad Frankie is a vintage cheddar and mozzarella with vegemite or chutney on the side and ham off the bone as an extra. ‘The Shroom’ is a heavenly mix of garlic, red, wine and thyme with mushrooms, spinach, fetta and melty mozzarella on wholemeal bread. There’s even dessert—a lamington jaffle filled with choc-soaked sponge cake, jam and coconut. TOASTA & CO Proof that Melbourne is ready for a dedicated toastie venue is Toasta & Co (181 Adderley Street, West Melbourne; toastaandco.com.au), a café on a corner locale in leafy West Melbourne. Toasta was evangelical in its pursuit of the perfect ‘toasta’, spreading the melty goodness via their food trucks. Now, their passion has evolved into a bricks and mortar venue. Their toastas are made with Zeally Bay organic sourdough and that golden crunch is thanks to a decadent mix of butter and duck fat. The savoury menu kicks off with a signature three-cheese blend and pickles, and gets increasingly gourmet. There’s an ooey gooey mac-and-very-cheesy with caramelised onion; a cheesy béchamel, shaved ham, spring onion and gruyere ‘Croque Monsieur’; and a ‘Tiffany’ with brie, walnuts, truffle oil, rocket and streaky bacon. Guests are invited to “treat yo’self” by adding a chicken or eggplant schnitzel to any toasta. Don’t mind if I do.

VICTORIA’S RACING FEVER All eyes are on Melbourne this month for the world-famous Melbourne Cup, writes Jenny Burns.

VICTORIA IS IN THE MIDST of a great party—the Spring

Racing Carnival. As well as celebrating the feats of magnificent thoroughbreds, the carnival features all the essential elements of a great party. There’s the chance to get dressed up in your finest (or in the case of some events your most bizarre outfit), enjoy great food and wine and generally just have fun. Of course, this also usually means spending some money! It’s estimated those attending last year’s Melbourne Cup Carnival purchased 295,397 individual fashion items including 49,067 pairs of shoes, 46,448 dresses, 11,659 suits and 59,665 hats and fascinators. They also spent $23.6 million on meals, food and beverages and $45.2 million on betting. 12 WHERE MELBOURNE I NOVEMBER 2017 I wheretraveler.com

Similar figures are expected at this year’s Melbourne Cup Carnival, which starts on Saturday 4 November with AAMI Victoria Derby Day and finishes on Saturday 11 November with Emirates Stakes Day. Run at Flemington Racecourse, the Melbourne Cup Carnival is regarded by many as the spring racing highlight with the Melbourne Cup (this year run on Tuesday 7 November) the standout event. It’s known as ‘the race that stops the nation’ as almost the entire country stops to watch the race at 3pm. In Melbourne it’s even a public holiday. Dating back to 1861, the Cup leaves an impression on all who attend. In 1895 American writer Mark Twain wrote of his experiences: “They come a hundred thousand strong and they pack the spacious grounds and grandstands and make a spectacle such as is never to be seen elsewhere.” While little has changed over the years in terms of the popularity of the Cup, there have been some major changes. The 3,200-metre race is now one of the world’s richest, offering A$6.25 million in prize money. More and more international horses are a feature of the race thanks in part to Irish trainer Dermot Weld who, in 1993, was a winner with Vintage Crop. Since then horses from Germany, Ireland, Japan and France have won the race. International horses are again expected to play a major role in this year’s Cup. However, a word of warning—if the horse you fancy is in

barrier 18, beware! No horse has won from here since barriers were introduced in 1924. Barriers five and 10 have been the most successful over the past 25 years, with four wins apiece. But then again omens are made to be broken. No female jockey had won the Cup until 2015 when Michelle Payne rode Prince of Penzance to victory. While the Cup is the best known of the races during the carnival there’s also great racing on all other days. Derby Day is widely regarded as one of the most prestigious days of racing in Australasia. There are four elite races including the $1.5 million AAMI Victoria Derby, Australia’s premier staying classic for three-year-olds. The Kennedy Oaks, held on Thursday 9 November, attracts the top three-year-old fillies with $1 million in prize money up for grabs. Racing on the final day of the carnival includes the $2 million weight-for-age race, the Emirates Stakes. Although the horses are the undisputed heroes of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, the accompanying fashion frenzy attracts nearly as much attention and is often just as competitive! Men and women alike relish the opportunity to dress in their finest race-wear. Myer Fashions on the Field at Flemington is one Australia’s largest and most prestigious outdoor fashion events. This year men and women are competing for prizes worth $250,000. There are awards for the best men’s and women’s racewear as well as prizes

for the best design and millinery. Even youngsters get in on the act with awards for the best dressed junior and senior boys and girls. Tradition dictates black and white is the go on Derby Day. Like all the four days it also has an official flower—the blue cornflower. Fashions on Cup Day range from the classic to exotic to totally outrageous. Hats are essential. The flower for Cup Day is the yellow rose. For many the fashion stakes are at their highest on Kennedy Oaks Day, also known as Ladies Day. It’s the day when women of all ages come together and celebrate feminine elegance. This is the time for romantic looks and delicate fabrics. A pink rose is the flower of the day. On the final day of the carnival, Emirates Stakes Day, it’s the time for youngsters to take centre stage with the judging of the young fashion awards. A red rose is the flower of the day. All Fashion on the Field competitions are based at The Park, a 10,000-square-metre area within Flemington which is free for all race-goers. A two-storey space has been built especially for the competition. It features dual runways, allowing spectators and judges a 360-degree view of competitors, beauty stations allowing for ‘makeup touch-ups’ and a bar. Numerous other restaurants and bars are also calling The Park home during the carnival. The Park is also the venue for a number of local music acts and DJs. There are also plenty of activities for youngsters, especially on Emirates Stakes Day. The Melbourne Cup carnival is so popular that tickets are limited and must be pre-purchased, visit melbournecup.com/tickets for more information. While the Melbourne Cup Carnival takes centre stage in November, there are many other great race days during the month including a number of country race meetings. As well as offering some fantastic racing these meetings are also great fun. There are great horses to watch, lots of good food and wine and plenty of entertainment. NOVEMBER IS FILLED WITH A WIDE RANGE OF EVENTS TO EXCITE AND INSPIRE. BY JENNY BURNS.

Celebrating Chinese Culture at Sovereign Hill A new exhibition at Sovereign Hill’s Gold Museum features one of the most extensive Chinese artefact collections, and for the first time in over five decades, reawakens Loong, one of Australia’s oldest dragons. “Re-awakening the Dragon” showcases items once used by Ballarat’s Chinese community for social, cultural and religious ceremonies, including the spectacular dragon. Another highlight is parts of a lion, which like the dragon, was used by the Chinese community to celebrate Queen Victoria’s 1897 Diamond Jubilee. Both the dragon and lion are the oldest documented examples in Australia, and Ballarat is now only one of four known sites where a Qing Dynasty dragon survives in whole or part. The exhibition also includes processional costumes and banners used in the celebrations, which included a major procession. Chinese temple artefacts dating back to the 1850–1870s are also on display. TASTE OF MELBOURNE This year’s Taste of Melbourne is transforming the Melbourne Cricket Ground’s Yarra Park into a colourful collision of art, entertainment and food. Families, foodies and curious shoppers can meander through laneways of more than 100 artisan producers and enjoy great food during the day, while at night there’s also live music. Those with an appetite for more than tasting can discover edible education and insider tips from top culinary talent at the Electrolux Taste Theatre. Some of Melbourne’s top chefs are sharing insider tips in intimate masterclasses at Electrolux Chefs’ Secrets, cooking a signature dish alongside guests before sitting down to enjoy their creations together. 30 November–3 December, Yarra Park (MCG), Wellington Parade, East Melbourne. 132 849. melbourne.tastefestivals.com

Papua New Guinea Culture on Show Melbourne Museum is staging “a Bit na Ta: The Story of the Gunantuna”, a multimedia installation of transformative impressions of the Tolai people of Papua New Guinea’s East New Britain province. For over a century (1875–1975) the Tolai community’s strength and capacity to survive the disruptions of shifting colonial powers, war, volcanic eruptions and independence struggles has been like none other. Blurring the past, present and future through video footage, photographic works and collection objects, “a Bit na Ta” represents a 30-year spiritual collaboration between internationally renowned singer George Telek, celebrated local musician David Bridie and historian Gideon Kakabin. The exhibition also includes contemporary artworks made by Tolai artist Lisa Hilli. Archibald Prize at Geelong Geelong Gallery is hosting the touring exhibition of Australia’s best-known art award, the “Archibald Prize”. This year’s prize attracted 822 entries from which 43 finalist portraits were selected. The prize was won by Mitch Cairns for his portrait of partner and artist Agatha GotheSnape. His work and that of other finalists are on display in Geelong. Prestigious and controversial, the “Archibald Prize” is Australia’s foremost portraiture prize. It’s awarded to the best painting of a notable Australian and thus is a who’s who of Australian culture, from politicians and celebrities to sporting heroes and artists.

Aladdin the Musical Disney’s “Aladdin the Musical”, now playing at Her Majesty’s Theatre, sparkles in every way. There’s the sparkle created by the many sequined and gem encrusted opulent costumes and extravagant sets. Then there are the performances by the cast. Add to these pyrotechnics, very colourful, brilliantly choreographed dance routines and even a flying carpet and you can understand why “Aladdin” is described as one of the most lavish shows ever to tour Australia. The musical is based on the Disney 1992 film of the same name and tells of povertystricken Aladdin (Ainsley Melham) who meets Princess Jasmine (Hiba Elchikhe) in the marketplace and falls in love. Of course, there are many barriers in the way of their love but with the help of Genie (Michael James Scott) and Aladdin’s friends Babkak (Troy Sussman), Omar (Robert Tripolino) and Kassim (Adam-Jon Fiorentino) true love prevails.

‘THE BOOK OF MORMON’ WOWS AUDIENCES The award-winning “The Book of Mormon” is playing to packed houses at Melbourne’s Princess Theatre. The politically incorrect, satirical and extremely funny musical tells the story of two newly-trained Mormon missionaries who are sent to a Ugandan village to spread their religion’s teachings. Elder Price (Ryan Bondy) is polite, devoted, extremely confident and ambitious. He’s less than happy to be going to Africa and also not too thrilled with his ‘partner’, Elder Cunningham (Nyk Bielak). Cunningham is ‘socially challenged’, clumsy, a compulsive liar and is just looking for a friend. Finding converts among the warlord controlled, impoverished, disease-ravaged inhabitants of the village to which they are assigned proves more difficult than anticipated. After Elder Price has a crisis of faith it’s up to the hapless Elder Cunningham to save the villagers’ souls. He finds an ally in Nabulungi (Zahra Newman), daughter of the village’s chief Mafala (Bert LaBonté). Excellent performances from all cast members, many funny lines and big musical numbers brilliantly choreographed and performed by an enthusiastic ensemble ensures “The Book of Mormon” lives up to the hype that surrounds it. Recommended for mature audiences. Ongoing, Princess Theatre, 163 Spring Street, Melbourne. 1300 723 038. bookofmormonmusical.com.au 20 WHERE MELBOURNE I NOVEMBER 2017 I wheretraveler.com

MTC PLAYS The Melbourne Theatre Company is staging two plays during November. Opening on 2 November is Florian Zeller’s “The Father”. Directed by Damien Ryan and staring iconic Australian actor John Bell, this MTC and Sydney Theatre Company co-production is a powerful and poignant mystery that transports audiences into the puzzling labyrinth of an old man’s once familiar world. There’s definitely something fishy going on. You can’t fool André, and while he may be 80-years-old and apt, on occasion, to forget things, they are only ever small things such as where he’s put his watch. It doesn’t explain why people are John Bell stars in “The Father”. messing around with things in his flat and why his daughter keeps contradicting herself. And it doesn’t explain why she allows strangers to come in and threaten him. No, something’s going on and he’ll get to the bottom of it.

Liz and Ben have been mates with Cynthia and Evan for years, and would never let anything get in the way of their friendship. It’s different though when both couples set their sights on buying the same house. Forget friendship, forget respect, forget human “Vivid White”. decency—this is the Australian property market. And nothing, not even the imminent collapse of civilisation itself, can stop the zombielike single-mindedness of buying the perfect house! Pop-up Globe Comes to Melbourne A full-scale temporary working replica of one of the greatest theatres in history, the second Globe, has ‘popped-up’ in the newlychristened Shakespeare Gardens, adjacent to the Sidney Myer Music Bowl. Pop-up Globe is a three-storey, 16-sided, 900-person capacity theatre which unites cutting-edge scaffold technology with a 400-year-old design. No matter where you sit or stand in the theatre you are no more than 15 metres from the heart of the action on stage. The theatre features all the theatrical trickery of the Jacobean era, including cannons, flaming arrows, hundreds of litres of fake blood, hand-forged armoury and more than 450 period costume pieces specially constructed by the Pop-up Globe in-house wardrobe department. The theatre is hosting five shows including “As You Like It”, “Much Ado About Nothing”, “Othello” and “Henry V”. There’s also a specially-commissioned new show, “Around the Globe in 60 Minutes!”, which tells the history of the second Globe Theatre.

de Niese. Filled with memorable tunes and dance routines, “The Merry Widow” is a light-hearted look at love amid the champagne and glitter of Art Deco France. Ladies sweep into ballrooms in silk fishtail gowns while gents in suits and patent leather shoes kiss your hand and fill up your dance card. The tiny state of Pontevedro is bankrupt. Their only hope of financial salvation lies in Hanna, a beautiful widow who inherited her husband’s fortune after just eight days of marriage. The Pontevedrians must convince her to marry a local, lest she take her fortune to foreign shores. ‘BRIGADOON’ AT THE STATE THEARE The Production Company is staging the romantic classic, “Brigadoon”, at Arts Centre Melbourne’s State Theatre. The show features a cast of 28, a band of 21 and a piper playing the Scottish bagpipes. From Lerner and Loewe (“My Fair Lady” and “Camelot”), “Brigadoon” is the story of New Yorkers Tommy Albright and Jeff Douglas who get lost on their vacation to the Scottish Highlands, and stumble upon Brigadoon, a mythical village that appears for one day every hundred years. Tommy, who has a fiancé in New York, soon falls in love with Fiona, a young woman from Brigadoon. As Tommy learns, to fall in love means staying forever. Rohan Browne stars as Tommy, soprano Genevieve Kingsford plays Fiona while Nancye Hayes is the matriarch Mrs Forsythe. BALLARAT’S ‘ROMANCING THE SKULL’ Art Gallery of Ballarat’s exhibition “Romancing the Skull” is a celebration of all things related to the skull. It examines its power as a symbol representing death, danger, rebellion, defiance and a ‘devil-may-care’ view of life itself. While skulls and skeletons take centre stage, the exhibition also takes sideways glances at historic imagery such as medieval Dances of Death, pirate flags, poison bottles and tattoo art. More than 20 prints by Mexican artist José Guadalupe Posada (1852–1913), long associated with the Day of the Dead, are on show to Australian audiences for the first time. Other exhibition highlights include a woodcut print from the renowned Nuremberg Chronicle of 1493 depicting one of the earliest “Danse Macabre” (Dance of Death) images and Australian artist Shaun Gladwell’s Virtual Reality work “Orbital Vanitas”, 2016, which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Newspapers of the time printed designs and patterns for cheerful decorations which could be made at home using readily available materials. It’s a boulevard of chic designer shopping, five-star hotels, exclusive jewellers, grand heritage buildings, churches, theatres and private clubs. It’s Melbourne’s premier commercial streetscape with a number of Australia’s largest corporations calling Collins Street home and it has also been the setting for some of Australia’s best known paintings. While there have been many changes over the years with the construction of a number of modern buildings, its fine nineteenth-century heritage is still strongly evident. Then there are the wonderful plane trees, which line the street looking particularly stunning at night under lights. One of the reasons for Collins Street’s continual appeal is its ability to change with the times. Since 1837 it has been rebuilt several times. It’s also been extended—the last occurring with the continuation of the street across Spencer Street railway lines and into Docklands. However what hasn’t changed is the street’s appeal as both a business and leisure hub. A Collins Street address is still coveted by major businesses and professionals. The Regent and Athenaeum Theatres continue to attract theatregoers from around the world while worshippers flock to its three historic churches—the Collins Street Baptist Church, St Michael’s Uniting Church and Scots' Church. Given the quality of their neighbours, several luxury hotels fit perfectly in the mix including Novotel Melbourne on Collins, Sofitel Melbourne on Collins, Grand Hyatt Melbourne and The Westin Melbourne. Delicious food is on offer on Collins Street. For pralines, gelato, gateaux and chocolate, you won’t go past Gânache Chocolate Lounge. With its European ambience and impeccable service, they

Here you’ll also find the Block Arcade. This arcade between Collins and Elizabeth Streets has been one of the places to go shopping since it was built back in the 1890s.

It comes as no surprise to discover the Block is classified by the National Trust and is on the register of the National Estate. There’s so much interest in the Arcade that guided historic tours are on offer. The Block is also home to one of Melbourne’s most historic tearooms. Lady Hopetoun, haughty wife of the popular Victorian governor Lord Hopetoun, founded a Victorian Ladies’ Work Association which established tearooms at number 6 Block Arcade in 1893. The

association disbanded in 1907 but the tearooms named after its founder have survived in their original location to this day. Hopetoun Tea Rooms is one of more than 30 fascinating outlets within the arcade, offering everything from the latest fashion to unique gifts. Then there is the shopping. FAMILY ATTRACTIONS Sovereign Hill, an internationally acclaimed tourist attraction, brings to life the colour and excitement of Australia’s 1850s gold rush. It’s just like stepping back in time to gold rush Ballarat—from the hustle and bustle of Main Street where costumed ladies and gents parade their new-found wealth, to the excitement of the diggings where visitors can pan for real gold! There’s also an underground mine tour, a spectacular $150,000 gold pour, the Redcoat soldiers who fire their powerful muskets, and much more.

BALLARAT EXPLORE

By night, entertainment continues at Sovereign Hill with the multi-million dollar sound-and-light show, “Blood on the Southern Cross”—the legendary story of the 1854 Eureka Rebellion. Convenient on-site accommodation is available at Sovereign Hill Hotel. On now at the Gold Museum is the “Re-awakening the Dragon” exhibition which showcases items once used by Ballarat’s Chinese community for social, cultural and religious ceremonies, including the spectacular Loong dragon. No matter what time of year you visit, Sovereign Hill will come alive with the sights and sounds of the goldfields— and you might even strike it rich in your search for gold! sovereignhill.com.au If it’s animals you love, then enjoy interactive play with some of Australia’s most-loved creatures at the Ballarat Wildlife Park. Hand-feed more than 100 free-roaming kangaroos and emus, cuddle koalas and wombats, see Tasmanian devils, and brave the reptile house with its crocodiles and snakes. wildlifepark.com.au Kryal Castle is Ballarat’s land of medieval adventure—and it’s fit for all ages to explore. Discover myths, legends and fairy tales, be entertained and thrilled in the Torture Museum, and witness the special-effects dungeon and the dramatic main arena shows. You will be enchanted bythe story of the Land of Kryal, all set in the real-life castle on the hill. kryalcastle.com.au Another world-class attraction in Ballarat is the Museum of Australian Democracy at Eureka (MADE). MADE is a digitally-immersive, state-of-the-art museum. With the evocative 158-yearold Eureka flag as its centrepiece, MADE’s interactive exhibitions explore the past and future of democracy— looking at culture, civics, history and citizenship. made.org Or, if you want to see the works —why not bundle the four abovementioned attractions together to save 15 per cent on entry? Purchase the ‘Ballarat Pass’, which is available from the Ballarat Visitor Information Centre at Town Hall, 225 Sturt Street and enjoy other bonus offers around the vibrant regional city too.

INDULGE THE SENSES Ballarat’s picturesque Lake Wendouree is famed for its recreation opportunities and a chance to get up close with nature. It’s the former site of the 1956 Summer Olympics. The Lake is just a stone’s throw from the iconic Ballarat Botanical Gardens. Home to the avenue of Prime Minister busts, marble statues, and huge

shady trees—it’s one of Australia’s oldest and finest gardens set amongst 40 hectares. For a touch of wellbeing, how about booking in to one of the region’s many luxurious day spas? Or, if it’s food for the soul you are after, you can fulfil every need at gourmet patisseries, charming cellar doors, or award-winning first-class restaurants.

BARS DINING

MELBOURNE’S BRILLIANT BARS By Peter McBrearty

MANY AUTHENTIC, CHARACTER INFUSED local bars in Melbourne can be found not far from the city centre, in formerly working-class inner suburban areas such as Brunswick, Fitzroy, Collingwood and St Kilda. One popular example of this genre is The Catfish (30 Gertrude Street, Fitzroy. 9417 6420), a supremely laid-back venue offering a rotating array of craft beers on tap, bottled beers and a selection of Australian wine. There’s also a kitchen serving Sparrow’s Philly Cheesesteaks (including an organic tofu variant for vegetarians), a small rear beer garden, upstairs pool table, Tuesday comedy nights and regular live music sessions. The Catfish is also a regular destination for nursing and medical staff from the nearby St Vincent’s Hospital looking to unwind at the end of their working day, and visitors to Melbourne will often find themselves in conversation with both local residents and the friendly proprietors and bar staff. The perfect place to begin or end a visit to the Fitzroy area, and also as a destination in itself, The Catfish is an ideal introduction to Melbourne’s justly renowned reputation for playing host to a wide array of welcoming and idiosyncratic inner city and inner suburban bars. The Retreat Hotel (280 Sydney Road, Brunswick. 9380 4090) features just about all the ingredients required for the perfect inner-city pub, heritage (established in 1842), live music, a beer garden, decent pub food (with dishes such as lentil shepherd’s pie and a black bean, mushroom and brown rice burger ensuring vegetarians will also feel right at home), and of course, the most vital ingredient of all—an abundance of character. One venue which has (despite exponentially rising land prices and the area’s ongoing gentrification) managed to retain 110% of its true Fitzroy character, is The Napier (210 Napier Street, Fitzroy. 9419 4240), where local brews, pool, a courtyard, fireplaces and a legendary towering, cholesterol-laden construct known as a Bogan Burger (delicious but not for the faint hearted) combine with the requisite intangible inner-Melbourne ambience to draw in cheerful crowds of appreciative regulars.

The Catfish. Photo: Amy Woodward.

The Standard Hotel (293 Fitzroy Street, Fitzroy. 9419 4793) manages to perfectly live up to its own mantra—“Hard to find, easy to love”—in that it lies nestled in a slightly confusing maze of one way streets, but rewards the intrepid explorer who finally manages to find it, with a warm interior (the venue dates back to 1865), a renowned beer garden, large dining area, live music and, of course, lashings of that hard to define, but genuine, inner-city Melbourne character.

LADYBOY DINING & BAR BY PETER M cBREARTY

MELBOURNE’S REAL SOUL arguably resides just as much in its popular inner suburbs as in the city. One area that has swiftly gained its own place alongside other well-known precincts is Richmond. The area has morphed into a continually evolving destination offering an eclectic range of bars, cafes and restaurants, and one venue which perfectly encapsulates the unique characteristics of this formerly working-class area is Ladyboy Dining & Bar. Both the exterior and interior of Ladyboy are vibrantly colourful, and the street side windows open fully to allow diners the sensation of dining in a street café. Similarly, colourful and exotic paintings adorn the walls, with a large benevolent and well fed Buddha gazing down upon diners in one section of the restaurant, a giant crab overlooking another, and an array of brightly coloured parasols hang from the roof. At the rear of the restaurant is a leafy outside garden area, ideal for relaxed dining on a balmy summer evening, and over the kitchen is written the neon mantra “rock out with your wok out”, which gives a laid-back atmosphere. Ladyboy’s menu is divided between smaller and larger dishes, with many lending themselves well to sharing; allowing diners to more fully experience the array of tastes on offer. Beers from Thailand and Laos feature alongside local brews, and the cocktail list is oriented toward fresh and citrus flavours, perfectly attuned to the robust flavours on offer. For many, a cold bottle of Thai Singha beer could prove to be the perfect companion for the tender salt and pepper squid with fresh herbs, chilli, sweet soy and ginger, while the soft shell crab sliders with apple slaw are definitely tempting enough to consider ordering a second serve. The popular Thai Ceviche, consists of house cured salmon, roe, green namjim and coconut foam, and another of the smaller dishes particularly well suited to a cold Thai beer chaser is the lamb ribs with a Mekhong and red curry glaze, with the succulent meat falling easily from the bone. Diners are well advised though to take care not to fill up entirely on the smaller dishes, as the main courses at Ladyboy are well worth saving a little space for. One favourite is the Penang Curry, with a four-hour slow braised Great Southern Beef Rib, arriving in a spicy sauce with Thai eggplant and herbs, making a side of Roti almost mandatory to soak up the delicious sauce. Anyone familiar with Thai cuisine may find it hard to go past the Pad Thai with rice noodles, egg, Chinese chives, tofu, bean sprouts and cashews (which can be further enhanced by adding chicken or prawns), a steamed barramundi fillet is served with sweet soy, ginger, baby bok choy, Enoki mushrooms and herbs, and the twice cooked pork belly with chilli jam, bok choy, snow peas, broccolini and kaffir lime leaves is another dish providing a satisfyingly complex overlay of flavours. Side dishes are relatively simple, and consist of either Jasmine or coconut rice, and also Asian greens with garlic and oyster sauce. Coconut features prominently in the desserts on offer, with coconut ice-cream served with kaffir lime toffee, a coconut and pandan bombe Alaska, and the smoked coconut cheesecake with an Oreo crust and Persian fairy floss arrives in truly impressive style under a smoke-filled covering, which is only lifted away as it is brought to the table. Ladyboy is a dining venue which provides a combination of highly enjoyable food and cocktails, cheerful staff and a colourful and relaxed dining environment. It also has a very appealing irreverence about it, which lends itself to ensuring diners enjoy their overall experience, whether they drop in for a cocktail or two with friends during the early evening happy hour, or prefer to stay a little longer to indulge in the fragrant dishes on offer. This is a venue which could never be accused of being boring or taking itself too seriously, and goes a long way toward explaining the ever-increasing popularity of Richmond as a destination for locals and visitors to Melbourne. ■

ucky Chan, situated in the Crown Casino Complex on the Yarra River, boasts one of the best city skyline views in Melbourne and some of the finest Chinese cuisine you’re likely to try. Highly recommend are the Golden Scallops and King Prawns with Imperial Sauce. Their live seafood tanks are full of interesting fish, lobsters, large crabs and prawns, ready for an enticing array of dishes. To complement these dishes, the wine list comprises a wonderful selection of superb Australian wines. LES CLEFS D’OR

LES CLEFS D’OR By Nik Adams

STATE DIRECTOR FOR VICTORIA

Left: The third annual Victorian Les Clefs d’Or Hospitality Scavenger Hunt.

LES CLEFS D’OR INTERNATIONAL Past President: COLIN TOOMEY,

THE THIRD ANNUAL Victorian Les Clefs

d’Or Hospitality Scavenger Hunt was held this month at the Pullman Melbourne on the Park. This year, we had a record 25 teams participating in the event. Starting at the Pullman Melbourne on the Park, the teams ran around Melbourne learning about the sporting district and Fitzroy Gardens area, which made for some interesting photos! This year’s teams went all out on dressing up and we had pirates, mad doctors, Lego pieces and Super Mario Bros. The overall winner was the team from Hertz with an outstanding score. We look forward to arranging next year’s event, which will be even bigger. n We were invited to sample the famous high tea at The Hotel Windsor by Victorian member Ali Sungkar. A relaxing afternoon was spent sipping on champagne and sampling various cakes and scones. A true icon of Melbourne, it was great

to enjoy the classic atmosphere of The Hotel Windsor. A refined afternoon with some refined gentlemen! n Red Spice Road celebrated its 10-year anniversary recently and invited the concierge community to come along and help them mark the occasion. Executive chef John McLeay provided a sample of their delicious South East Asian menu. Plenty of spice ensured a fun night was had by all.

The Shangri-La Hotel, Sydney General Secretary: JAMES RIDENOUR, InterContinental Melbourne The Rialto

AUSTRALIAN EXECUTIVE President: PETER MCBREARTY, The Langham, Melbourne Secretary: DAVID LUFF, Crown Towers Perth Treasurer: BEN DAVIES, The Langham, Melbourne

VICTORIAN MEMBERS State Director: NIK ADAMS, Stamford Plaza Melbourne LUIS BARRA, Crown Towers ANDY BYRNE, Pullman & Mercure Melbourne Albert Park STEVE CIRIC, The Westin Melbourne

n Saké Restaurant and Bar Flinders Lane and Saké Restaurant and Bar Hamer Hall invited the concierge to dine at both their restaurants. The contemporary Japanese sample plate menu was a treat to try. With plenty of fresh takes on Japanese food, it is well recommended. Both restaurants are very modern and sleek, and bring sophisticated dining to both areas of Melbourne.
