Mesmerising Melbourne Festival Melbourne’s most iconic spaces are transformed to make way for a show-stopping Melbourne Festival. By Zac Lewis

LOVERS OF EVERYTHING ART REJOICE, the Melbourne International Arts Festival is back, and it's bigger and better than ever. From 3–21 October, Melbourne will come alive with artistic buzz. Festivalgoers will be able to enjoy a spectacular line-up of music, dance, circus, visual art, performance and theatre. Melbourne Festival Artistic Director Jonathan Holloway says that this year’s festival is a “celebration reminding us of the brilliance of fire, music, story and art.” With so much taking place over the 18 days there is something for everyone to enjoy. The festival begins with Tanderrum, a weaving of opening ceremony and Welcome to Country that honours the stories of the peoples that have walked these lands longest. Kept secret since the European Invasion, Tanderrum is now a sacred part of the Festival, welcoming artists and audiences from across the globe. Afterwards, come nose to nose with the circus experience at “Lexicon” in the Royal Botanical Gardens. The UK’s best contemporary circus troupe invites you to experience their celebration of the 250year history of circus in their only Australian show. Featuring international masters of their craft, this circus spectacular is daring, adventurous and oozing with style. Christian Wagstaff and Keith Courtney return from last year’s “House of Mirrors” with “1000 Doors”, a spatially absorbing experience that gives participants an opportunity to live in a ‘choose-your-ownadventure’ world. Musical maestros can enjoy countless contemporary musical acts. The GoBetweens join forces with a variety of special guests to reimagine their iconic Australian album “16 Lovers Lane”. Nils Frahm mashes modern and orchestral in his newest album, “All Melody”. His live set is one full of surprises, as electronic synths and classical pianos dance around one another in a roofraising aural experience. A communion of exquisite musical talent, Alva Noto and Ryuichi Sakamoto come together on stage to perform “Two”, an abstract yet expansive foray into experimental music.

Interested in seeing ballet pushed to the edge? “A Quiet Evening of Dance” from William Forsythe, a leading figure in contemporary choreography features four works that poke and prod at the foundations of ballet. Don’t miss this Australian premiere. See a tragic love story, told a thousand years before Shakespeare’s in “Layla and Majnun”. Choreographed by Mark Morris and accompanied by the Silkroad Ensemble this performance has a special style of music and movement that is only fitting for the biggest production of the Middle Eastern classic to ever be seen in the West. An immersive theatrical program promises themes of self-discovery, adventure and belonging. “My Name is Jimi” tells the personal story of Jimi Bani as he takes on his most challenging role as the upcoming chief of the Wagadagam People. Told through breathtaking set design and captivating performances this theatre experience tells a powerful story about family bonds suitable for all ages. “Prize Fighter” is a knockout experience and four-time Helpmann Award nominated production. It tells the story of ex-child soldier and Congolese refugee as he attempts to forget the shadows of his past. Those wishing to be captivated by visual arts can enjoy the many art exhibitions on show, from John Stezaker’s “Lost World”, an experiment in juxtaposition and meaning, to Eva Rothschild’s “Kosmos”, a sparse, yet striking adventure into abstract minimalism. At Melbourne Planetarium, "Particle/ Wave" is an immersive, multimedia experience combining art and science. A special closing event will take place at the Melbourne Pavilion. “Our Place, Our Home” presents a line-up of diverse artists to close the festival in a toe-tapping musical affair. Further experiences can be enjoyed at a variety of free events, exhibitions, music, installation artworks and much, much, more. Super 70s Come Alive Experience the daring, decadence and disco of the 1970s in The National Trust’s “Super 70s” exhibition.

THE DIVERSE FASHION TRENDS and styles of the 1970s are on show at a new exhibition at Rippon Lea Estate. The National Trust’s “Super 70s” exhibition features exquisite 1970s garments and accessories from the National Trust’s Costume Collection. We sat down with Elizabeth Anya-Petrivna, Exhibition Producer of the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) to talk about this fascinating look into the “Super 70s”. How did the concept of a 70s show come about? Can you tell us about the ideas and inspiration? While working on our last exhibition, “Night Life” which focused on the 1920s and 30s, I discovered some pieces in the collection that took inspiration from these decades but were made in the 1970s. I became intrigued by the 1970s retro revival of the

20

WHE RE I OCTO B E R 2 018

interwar period and mid-20th century. In particular, the use of vintage as high fashion. These gowns became the inspiration for “Super 70s”. What did the 1970s hold for Rippon Lea Estate? Rippon Lea Estate was opened to the public in 1974. During this decade heritage was a hot topic for Melburnians and there was a lot of interest in National Trust properties. It was also the site of many fashion shoots, as it continues to be to this day. The fight to save Rippon Lea Estate during the 1960s culminated with the gates opening to the public for the first time after Mrs Jones’ death. After more than a decade of campaigning, the destruction of the gardens was halted and Mrs Jones’ legacy preserved.

How did the rebellious decade of the 70s have an impact on fashion? In Melbourne, change during this decade was relentless, fast-paced and monumental. The progressive change and countercultural influence had a long lasting impact on how we dress. The lines between formal and informal began to be eroded, with day wear able to be worn as evening wear and denim and casual wear took on a whole new meaning. Unisex styling also had a big effect. Inspiration was also taken from outer space and new technology. Colour TV was first broadcast in 1975. “Alien”, “Close Encounters of the Third Kind”, and “Star Wars” became cinema classics

that had a long term cultural impact. With fashion, retro historicism was embraced and counterpointed these fast-paced changes. Fashion became casual and relaxed and far removed from the mannered etiquette of previous years when stricter dress codes applied. How have the revolutions of that era impacted on how we live today? We still fight for the things that matter— equal pay, equal rights, as well as other social justice issues. The revolution of free tertiary education for all has had a far reaching social impact. Many of the social justice issues we fight today were also fought in the 1970s. It was an inspirational decade. Who are some of the contributors that you have worked with? In sourcing the fashion for the show it was a wonderful surprise to discover that many of the designers, creatives and lovers of fashion kept many garments from their 1970s wardrobes. In a sense we’ve been able to put together an idea of each contributor’s personal style, as well as examples from their fashion collections. Designer Sally Browne has lent us many examples of the fashion she wore—it’s a privileged insight into the personal taste and aesthetic of one of Melbourne’s much loved designers. Similarly, Clarence Chai— who dressed both local and international celebrities like Debbie Harry has given us items he wore together with some of his iconic designs. What do you think people will enjoy most about the exhibition? The fashion selected for the exhibition has a real relevance and highlights the amazing creativity of the 1970s. The atmosphere will be electric. We’re trying to recreate the decadence of boutiques like The House of Merivale, as well as have some interactive elements with a string art installation and 70s sitting room which we hope visitors of all ages will enjoy. Until 4 November, daily 10am–4pm, Rippon Lea Estate, 192 Hotham Street, Elsternwick. 9656 9889. Adult: $20, Concession: $18, Child (5–15 years): $10, Family (two adults and two children): $50. superseventies.com.au

Hunter Gatherer Hunter Gatherer is one of the many Melbourne community stores run by the Brotherhood of St Lawrence. However, this store is where all the vintage treasure is hidden. Each item is carefully handpicked from the 27 other stores. This means Hunter Gatherer only houses the best of the best. Pick up the blouse of your dreams at this very well priced store. As the proceeds go to charity, everyone is a winner here.

RetroStar Located in the Nicholas Building is RetroStar, Australia’s largest vintage store. You could spend an entire afternoon trawling through the many treasures that adorn the racks and walls of this vintage institution. Specialising in shoes, clothes and accessories from the 1940s through to the 1990s, there truly is something for everyone— from band shirts and streetwear to a selection of reworked vintage pieces.

Secondo Secondo is the place to be if you are looking for luxury vintage goods. Jimmy Choo, Miu Miu, Fendi, Prada, Moschino, Dior, Celine, Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Balenciaga are just some of the highend names that bedeck the racks. There is also a selection of gorgeous accessories. Picture little aqua boxes tied up with white ribbons! You can definitely be assured of a genuine one-off luxury fashion gem here.
