HAY FEVER

Marg Downey in rehearsal for “Hay Fever”. Photo: Brett Boardman.

MARG STARS

IN ‘HAY FEVER’ We speak to Marg Downey about her role in Melbourne Theatre Company’s new production of “Hay Fever”. By Jenny Burns. MELBOURNE THEATRE COMPANY’S latest

production of Noël Coward’s play “Hay Fever” ticks all the boxes for one of its stars, Marg Downey. She loves the Melbourne Theatre Company (MTC), she is again working with the play’s director Lee Lewis, she adores her character and “has a soft spot” for Coward. According to Downey the MTC has a fantastic vibe and it’s very respectful. “It also has a great canteen,” she added with a laugh. Lewis and Downey last worked together on “Rupert”, the story of Rupert Murdoch which had a successful run in both Australia and Washington. Unlike the modern “Rupert”, “Hay Fever”, Coward’s farce about bad manners, family relationships and rivalries, has been around for nearly 100 years. “While it’s a comedy it is layered and there is a lot going on underneath which is pretty amazing when you consider Coward was only in his 20s when he wrote the play,” Downey said. Set in the 1920s, “Hay Fever” tells of a weekend at the Bliss family’s country

house. Judith Bliss (Marina Prior) is a retired actress who tends towards the melodrama in her everyday affairs while her husband, David (Kim Gyngell), a novelist, can be rather reclusive and foul tempered. But they can be perfectly charming when they want to be while their grown-up children, Simon (Gareth Davies) and Sorel (Imogen Sage), can also be civil, if it suits them. It’s just not on this weekend as all four Bliss family members have invited a guest to stay without telling any of the others. As the guests arrive, it becomes clear that it is not them who will be the problem, but the family themselves. Downey plays Clara, who was Judith Bliss’s dresser in the theatre and is now her maid. Needless to say Clara is a far better dresser than maid! Given her character and the farcical nature of the play, ensuring the correct comic timing is an essential part of Downey’s role. “I have lots of exits and entrances so I am listening and concentrating all the time,” she explains. Downey’s preparation for the role included researching women in the

8 WHERE MELBOURNE I OCTOBER 2017 I wheretraveler.com

workforce in the 20s and the role of the dresser in the theatre. Despite a long and very successful career Downey has rarely had a dresser. That career has encompassed numerous theatre, television and movie roles. Given her long career, Melbourne-based Downey has seen changes in the arts industry. Most recently these include the creation of independent theatre companies. She is a member of one of these companies, The Photos: Jeff Busby. Kin Collective. “Actors realise they can’t sit by the phone and wait for it to ring, they have to be proactive and showcase their wares. As a result they are producing some fantastic shows,” she explains. Further boosting the industry is local audience support. “Melbourne audiences are great supporters of the arts, whether it be large events such as the ballet or opera or intimate events in smaller spaces,” Downey said. “There are many great spaces all around Melbourne which are ideal for small, intimate events and shows.” One of Downey’s favourite spaces is fortyfivedownstairs. Taking in a show here, as well as dinner at such Flinders Lane restaurants as Supernormal or Cumulus Inc. are included in the recommendations she gives to visitors to Melbourne. A visit to the Melbourne Cricket Ground and if time allows, a trip down the Great Ocean Road to Lorne or to Sorrento on the Mornington Peninsula, are other recommendations. Downey is also a great fan of Melbourne’s parks and gardens. “Not many major cities have the number of parks we have both in downtown Melbourne and the suburbs,” she said. Not surprisingly, given her love of green spaces, a walk through the Botanical Gardens and around the Tan rate as her favourite Melbourne experiences. “I have been walking around the Tan for around 28 years and I never get sick of it or strolling through the gardens as they are always different,” she added. ■ “Hay Fever” is playing at the Southbank Theatre, the Sumner until 28 October. OFF TO THE RACES

Fillies, fashion and frivolity all come to the fore in Victoria during October as the Spring Racing Carnival takes centre stage. By Jenny Burns.

VICTORIANS’ LOVE OF a great party is

legendary and the Spring Racing Carnival is one of our biggest celebrations with the best horses, fashion aficionados, celebrities and those who just love a good party in attendance. This year’s carnival, which started on 1 September and finishes on 25 November, features 136 race meetings. The carnival continues to command strong interest on the world stage with a number of international horses again expected to compete for the $77 million in prize money on offer. Many of these horses will be in action at the BMW Caulfield Cup Carnival which starts on Saturday 14 October with Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas Day. This is always a popular meeting with purists, thanks to the number of high quality races on the program including Victoria’s premier mile classic race for three-year-olds.

On 18 October it’s Catanach’s Jewellers Blue Sapphire Stakes Day which sees the country’s best young sprinters go hoof-tohoof vying for the coveted crown of Blue Sapphire champion. The flagship event, the $3.15 million BMW Caulfield Cup, the world’s richest turf handicap over 2,400 metres, is run on 21 October. Attention then turns to Moonee Valley for the Cox Plate Carnival. The carnival incorporates two race meetings, starting on Friday 27 October with Ladbrokes Manikato Stakes Night. The Manikato Stakes sees the nation’s best sprinters clash for a share of $1 million in Australia’s richest thoroughbred race under lights. On Saturday 28 October it’s Ladbrokes Cox Plate Day, which features Australia’s premier weight for age championship race, the $3 million Ladbrokes Cox Plate.

12 WHERE MELBOURNE I OCTOBER 2017 I wheretraveler.com

This race is regarded as the best weight for age race in Australasia. Racing heroes from yesteryear, including Phar Lap and Tulloch, together with modern champions such as Might and Power, Sunline, Northerly and the great champion mare Makybe Diva, have etched their names on the W.S. Cox Plate honour roll. All eyes this year will be on Winx, the wonder mare aiming to become only the second horse in history to win the Cox Plate three years in a row. She’s won her latest 20 races so hopes are high for another victory thus cementing her racing immortality. After the Cox Plate the spotlight turns to Flemington racecourse and the Melbourne Cup Carnival. The carnival gets underway on 4 November with AAMI Victoria Derby Day.

grooming to ensure they looked their best at the racetrack. Given such outlays it’s not surprising to discover Fashion on the Fields competitions can be just as competitive as the action on the track! Further boosting the interest is the prize money on offer for the best outfits. During the Caulfield Cup Carnival thousands of dollars are on offer. Entrants in Myer Fashion on the Field competition, run during the Melbourne Cup Carnival, are competing for around $250,000 worth of prizes. Even the country race clubs get in on the act with the 26 country cup meetings offering thousands of dollars in prizes to the fashion savvy. Country race meetings are an important component of the Spring Racing Carnival. This year 40 clubs will hold race days during the carnival.

Caulfield Cup. Ph

Derby Day is considered by most racing purists to be the best single day of thoroughbred racing in Australia. On 7 November the pinnacle of the Spring Racing Carnival, the Emirates Melbourne Cup, takes centre stage. The third day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival is Kennedy Oaks Day on 9 November, traditionally known as Ladies Day. The racing highlight is the Kennedy Oaks, a classic for three-year-old fillies. The Melbourne Cup Carnival concludes on 11 November with Emirates Stakes Day. Highlights include the 1600-metre event, the Emirates Stakes. While for some the racing is the highlight of the carnival for others it’s the fashion. Last year, racegoers spent almost $60 million on dresses, hats, suits and

Winx. Photo: Racing Photos.

They range from once-a-year clubs to regional Victoria’s largest, with rewards to match. The largest of the races, TAB Cranbourne Cup (15 October) bet365 Geelong Cup (25 October), Jayco Bendigo Cup (1 November) and Sportsbet.com.au Ballarat Cup (25 November) all offer prize money of $300,000. As well as offering some fantastic racing, these meetings are also great fun. Like the major Melbourne race days there’s plenty of live entertainment. There’s also the chance to catch up with friends while enjoying some great food and wine which can be as important to some as the racing and fashion. As a visit to The Champions: Thoroughbred Racing Gallery (nsm.org.au), reveals, such celebrations aren’t new. Located within the National

Sports Museum at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the gallery features some of the oldest racing footage from around the country. Needless to say there are many happy faces in the crowd! The gallery examines the origins and logistics of racing and the colour and spectacle of race day fashions. There are plenty of treasures on show including a bridle and horseshoe worn by Phar Lap at Agua Caliente and all of champion trainer Bart Cummings’ dozen Melbourne Cup trophies. Another highlight is an articulated skeleton of Carbine, the champion racehorse of the 1880s and 1890s. There are plenty of champions at Living Legends (livinglegends.org.au) and as an added bonus they are alive and kicking!

Caulfield Cup. Ph

s.

Located within Woodlands Historic Park at Greenvale (six minutes from Melbourne Airport), Living Legends is home to 19 of Australia’s finest retired champion racehorses including winners of the Melbourne Cup, Japan Cup, Caulfield Cup, Australian Cup and Cox Plate. You can observe the horses in their paddock or join a guided tour. Tours include information about the horses and their racing history. There’s also a chance to feed several of the champions and learn more about their personalities and why they are champions. It seems many have the same attributes— mental toughness and the ability to relax. The same could be said of party-loving race patrons during the Spring Racing Carnival! ■ For more information on and tickets for this year’s carnival visit springracingcarnival.com.au

“We have drawn together as many of them as possible to create a blockbuster that attempts to remind us all what humankind is capable of. “Nowhere else in the world could you see monumental or seminal works like “Tree of Codes”, “A 24-Decade History of Popular Music”, “Under Siege”, “The Magnetic Fields’ 50 Song Memoir” and “Bangsokol” under the same banner and in the same three weeks, but that is what makes Melbourne astonishing. “This year’s festival is the result of collaboration without compromise, of great people bringing out and amplifying the best in other great people.” “Tree of Codes” is a collaboration between choreographer Wayne McGregor, visual artist Olafur Eliasson, musician Jamie xx and the Paris Opera Ballet. It’s described as a collision of contemporary ballet, visual art and electronic music. Performance artist Taylor Mac is presenting “A 24-Decade History of Popular Music”, a decade-by-decade walk through America from 1776 to 2016, told through the songs of the time, reinterpreted through ‘a radical queer lens’, and told from the perspective of groups whose stories are often forgotten, dismissed or buried. Renowned choreographer and dancer Yang Liping is presenting “Under Siege”, a tale known in Chinese opera and lore as “Farewell My Concubine”, with a mix of performers from ballet, hip-hop, kung-fu and Peking opera. Stephin Merritt, the mind behind American indie pop band The Magnetic Fields, has created a new set to celebrate his 50th birthday—a song for each year of his existence. He’s singing each of the 50 songs. “A Requiem for Cambodia: Bangsokol” is a new work spanning song, film, dance and voice and is the first orchestral performance that addresses the traumas that

Featuring six large scale bugs—Orchid Mantis, Bombardier Beetle, Jewel Wasp, Dragonfly, Japanese Honeybees and Katip (New Zealand’s most dangerous native spider)—“Bug Lab” uncovers the adaptive genius of bugs, which over millions of years have evolved to have superpower abilities, including camouflage, mind control, super speed, swarm intelligence and deadly venom. “Bug Lab” also highlights how bugs are the leading inspiration for cutting-edge technologies. There are dozens of interactive experiences offering visitors the chance to test their reflexes and practise bug brain surgery.

MTC Stages ‘Hay Fever’ The Melbourne Theatre Company is staging “Hay Fever”, Noël Coward’s supreme comedy of bad manners. Although Judith, a retired actress, tends towards melodrama in her everyday affairs and her husband, David, a novelist, can be rather reclusive and foul tempered—the Bliss family can be perfectly charming when they want to be. Their grown-up children, Simon and Sorel, are quite capable of civility too—if it suits them. It is just that, on this blighted weekend, each has invited a guest to stay at their country house without telling any of the others. So dashed inconsiderate! And for their poor guests, perfect agony. Stars of the production include Marina Prior, Kim Gyngell, Gareth Davies, Marg Downey, Imogen Sage and Simon Gleeson. Until 28 October, Southbank Theatre, The Sumner, 140 Southbank Boulevard, Southbank. 8688 0800. mtc.com.au

Dracula’s ‘Resurrection’ Dracula’s new show “Resurrection” plays like a greatest hits on scratched vinyl. It brings together the most requested acts of the past decade, revamped with striking costumes, mesmerising special effects and serrated-edge comedy. “Resurrection” blends music production acts, optical illusion, animatronic sculpture and rock-circus, with a song list that moves across the AM dial from Arctic Monkeys to Blondie. Add a dangerously talented cast that look like they’ve been attacked with a bedazzler by a drag queen stylist and you start to get the picture. It’s flashy, kitsch hysteria, with no act too audacious and no heel too high. Tickets include dinner, show, ghost train ride and the new simulated graveyard experience. Aladdin the Musical Disney’s “Aladdin the Musical”, now playing at Her Majesty’s Theatre, sparkles in every way. There’s the sparkle created by the many sequined and gem encrusted opulent costumes and extravagant sets. Then there are the performances by the cast. Add to these pyrotechnics, very colourful, brilliantly choreographed dance routines and even a flying carpet and you can understand why “Aladdin” is described as one of the most lavish shows ever to tour Australia. The musical is based on the Disney 1992 film of the same name and tells of poverty-stricken Aladdin (Ainsley Melham) who meets Princess Jasmine (Hiba Elchikhe) in the marketplace and falls in love. Of course, there are many barriers in the way of their love but with the help of Genie (Michael James Scott) and Aladdin’s friends Babkak (Troy Sussman), Omar (Robert Tripolino) and Kassim (Adam-Jon Fiorentino) true love prevails. ‘THE BOOK OF MORMON’ WOWS AUDIENCES

Photo: Jeff Busby.

The award-winning “The Book of Mormon” is playing to packed houses at Melbourne’s Princess Theatre. The politically incorrect, satirical and extremely funny musical tells the story of two newly-trained Mormon missionaries who are sent to a Ugandan village to spread their religion’s teachings. Elder Price (Ryan Bondy) is polite, devoted, extremely confident and ambitious. He’s less than happy to be going to Africa and also not too thrilled with his ‘partner’, Elder Cunningham (Nyk Bielak). Cunningham is ‘socially challenged’, clumsy, a compulsive liar and is just looking for a friend. Finding converts among the warlord controlled, impoverished, disease-ravaged inhabitants of the village to which they are assigned proves more difficult than anticipated. After Elder Price has a crisis of faith it’s up to the hapless Elder Cunningham to save the villagers’ souls. He finds an ally in Nabulungi (Zahra Newman), daughter of the village’s chief Mafala (Bert LaBonté). Excellent performances from all cast members, many funny lines and big musical numbers brilliantly choreographed and performed by an enthusiastic ensemble ensures “The Book of Mormon” lives up to the hype that surrounds it. Recommended for mature audiences. Ongoing, Princess Theatre, 163 Spring Street, Melbourne. 1300 723 038. bookofmormonmusical.com.au

‘The Bodyguard’ at the Regent The international award-winning hit musical “The Bodyguard” is playing at the Regent Theatre. Heide Museum of Modern Art is staging “Albert Tucker: Australian Stories”, which explores Tucker’s interest in Australian myth and identity. Tucker began painting outback themes while living in Italy in the mid-1950s. This exhibition brings together paintings portraying a cast of legendary characters set within a harsh and alienating Australian landscape, among them Ned Kelly and the Wild Colonial Boy. Defying nationalist clichés, Tucker depicts these bushrangers not as heroic figures, but as lurking centaurs waiting to pounce on their prey.

Melbourne’s History on Display “Melbourne: Foundations of a City” on at Old Treasury Building tells the story of the city’s astonishing growth. Panoramic pictures of the city from the 1840s to 1900 trace the extraordinary emergence of a city that was known by the 1880s as the ‘Queen City of the South’, or, to the great delight of its citizens, as ‘Marvellous Melbourne’. But there was a downside and despite its glittering outward appearances, Melbourne was also a dangerous city. The drains stank, the water was polluted and typhoid fever was rife. Until a deep sewerage system was finally completed in 1898, ‘Marvellous Melbourne’ was also popularly known as ‘Marvellous Smellbourne’. However, as this exhibition shows, despite all that, Melbourne was an amazing city. Ongoing, Sun–Fri 10am–4pm, Old Treasury Building, 20 Spring Street, Melbourne. 9651 2233. otb.org.au

STREET OF STYLE ENJOY COLLINS STREET’S STUNNING ARCHITECTURE, AND FASCINATING HISTORY, AS YOU SNAP UP STYLISH BARGAINS AND TERRIFIC TREATS.

COLLINS STREET exudes style and glamour.

It’s a boulevard of chic designer shopping, five-star hotels, exclusive jewellers, grand heritage buildings, churches, theatres and private clubs. It’s Melbourne’s premier commercial streetscape with a number of Australia’s largest corporations calling Collins Street home and it has also been the setting for some of Australia’s best known paintings. While there have been many changes over the years with the construction of a number of modern buildings, its fine nineteenth-century heritage is still strongly evident. Then there are the wonderful plane trees, which line the street looking particularly stunning at night under lights. One of the reasons for Collins Street’s continual appeal is its ability to change with the times. Since 1837 it has been rebuilt several times. It’s also been extended—the last occurring with the continuation of the street across Spencer Street railway lines and into Docklands. However what hasn’t changed is the street’s appeal as both a business and leisure hub. A Collins Street address is still coveted by major businesses and professionals. The Regent and Athenaeum Theatres continue to attract theatregoers from around the world while worshippers flock to its three historic churches—the Collins Street Baptist Church, St Michael’s Uniting Church and Scots' Church. Given the quality of their neighbours, several luxury hotels fit perfectly in the mix including Novotel Melbourne on Collins, Sofitel Melbourne on Collins, Grand Hyatt Melbourne and The Westin Melbourne. Delicious food is on offer on Collins Street. For pralines, gelato, gateaux and chocolate, you won’t go past Gânache Chocolate Lounge. products in Melbourne. The section between Swanston and Elizabeth Streets features a number of historic and more recently built arcades which are home to a huge selection of chain and concept stores selling clothing and homewares. Here you’ll also find the Block Arcade. This arcade between Collins and Elizabeth Streets has been one of the places to go shopping since it was built back in the 1890s.

It comes as no surprise to discover the Block is classified by the National Trust and is on the register of the National Estate. There’s so much interest in the Arcade that guided historic tours are on offer. The Block is also home to one of Melbourne’s most historic tearooms. Lady Hopetoun, haughty wife of the popular Victorian governor Lord Hopetoun, founded a Victorian Ladies’ Work Association which established tearooms

at number 6 Block Arcade in 1893. The association disbanded in 1907 but the tearooms named after its founder have survived in their original location to this day. Hopetoun Tea Rooms is one of more than 30 fascinating outlets within the arcade, offering everything from the latest fashion to unique gifts. Then there is the shopping. 48 HOURS IN THE OTWAYS

48 HOURS IN THE Enjoy an escape to the idyllic Otways region, just two hours west of Melbourne. By Mark Fitz HOME TO A CAPTIVATING COASTLINE, picturesque national

parks and an abundance of fantastic food, the Otways region is a delight to your senses. With so much to explore and experience, here’s how to get the most out of 48 hours in the region.

WHERE TO EXPLORE? Otway Park Trees Adventure There’s no better way to get the blood pumping than on a high ropes course tour! Once you’re geared up and have had the safety briefing it’s then straight out onto one of the courses, which range from easy through to more advanced. My favourite activity on the course is the flying foxes—the adrenaline rush you get as you’re high in the sky and zipping through the bushland is a lot of fun! Stevensons Falls A 30-minute drive south of Otway Park Trees Adventure is the magnificent Stevensons Falls. From the carpark, the falls are a 500-metre walk through the forest and along the Gellibrand River. A couple of days before my visit there had been significant rains which meant there was plenty of water rushing over the falls. There is also a campground in the valley which is quite popular during the holiday periods. Marriners Lookout At the northern end of Apollo Bay is Marriners Lookout, which boasts some of the best views in the region, especially at sunrise or sunset. The lookout is situated on private land, however the landowners have kindly allowed the public access, so please make sure you respect it and take any rubbish with you.

Cape Otway Lightstation Built in 1848, the Cape Otway Lightstation is widely recognised as Australia’s most important lighthouse. Perched high above the meeting point of the Southern Ocean and Bass Straight, this was the first glimpse of Australia for thousands of people including convicts and early settlers. An Indigenous Cooking Display is also available here where you can learn about the local Koori culture at the Indigenous Cultural Centre. Californian Redwoods Nestled alongside the Aire River is the colossal Californian Redwoods forest. Planted in 1939, the Redwoods now reach up to 60 metres high and are a magical part of the Great Otway National Park. It’s the perfect spot for a picnic so make sure you grab some scallop pies and sandwiches from the Apollo Bay Bakery before you head out! Hopetoun Falls Only three kilometres from the Redwoods is one of the most iconic and photographed waterfalls in Victoria, Hopetoun Falls. There is a viewing platform at the carpark but the best way to experience the falls is at their base. It’s about a 15-minute walk to the bottom where you’ll be greeted by the roaring falls, a mass of beautiful ferns and the creek rushing past. You’ll be filled with a sense of awe and wonder and it feels like you’re in “Jurassic Park”.

EXPLORE BALLARAT CULTURALLY INFORMATIVE Founded in 1884, the Art Gallery of Ballarat is the oldest and largest regional gallery in Australia. Home to one of the most comprehensive collections of Australian paintings in the nation, works featured here are just a small selection from a holding that extends from convict artists of Van Diemen’s Land to the present day. General entry is free and special exhibitions are regularly alternated. EXHIBITIONS AT THE ART GALLERY OF BALLARAT Art Gallery of Ballarat is staging several exhibitions this month. From 14 October, the “Romancing the Skull” exhibition will be a celebration of all things related to the skull. It examines its power as a symbol representing death, danger, rebellion, defiance and a ‘devil-may-care’ view of life itself. More than 20 prints by Mexican artist José Guadalupe Posada (1852–1913), long associated with the Day of the Dead, are on show to Australian audiences for the first time. There are also works commissioned specially for the exhibition by Fiona Hall, Reko Rennie and Sally Smart and contemporary Australian artists Sam Jinks, Rona Green and Ben Quilty. The human body is the focus of two exhibitions by Ballaratborn artist Lauren Black. Lauren Black’s anatomical art intertwines with another body of work that she developed while on an artist’s residency in Penang, Malaysia. The focus of this work is traditional Chinese medicine and offers up an alternative way of thinking about and engaging with the body.

RESTAURANT OF THE MONTH

CUMULUS UP BY PETER M cBREARTY

FOR SOME TIME now Melbourne’s Flinders Lane has been evolving into a distinct dining strip with an ever-expanding range of venues, including a number of local favourites. One of the best known of these restaurants is Andrew McConnell’s Cumulus Inc. which since its inception has been consistently popular with diners drawn by its reputation for top notch all day dining. However, those in the know are already well aware that perched above Cumulus Inc. is another of Andrew McConnell’s intriguing dining destinations, Cumulus Up. While their names may be similar, Cumulus Up definitely has its own very distinct identity, and accordingly the same patron who has enjoyed breakfast or lunch downstairs is equally likely to be sighted later the same day comfortably ensconced in Cumulus Up, wine glass in hand, displaying a visible sense of anticipation as they peruse the menu. The loft like space manages to be at once modern and yet at the same time also warm and welcoming, with exposed bricks, wooden and marble tables and gentle lighting emanating from round hanging globes adding to the almost intimate air of a hidden eyrie. The clientele is often almost as eclectic and potentially as entertaining as the menu itself, which only adds to the appeal. A visit to Cumulus Up would not be complete without sampling the justly popular (and vaguely decadent) duck waffle with foie gras and prune, while Bruny Island blue mussels are served with broad beans and pickled sweet garlic. Even those normally wary of beef tartare may find they are tempted by Cumulus Up’s coarsely chopped beef tartare, tarragon and fried anchovy providing a delicious take on this classic dish. Fresh heirloom beetroot is served with house made curd and dill, and smoked eel cream and cecina accompany Jerusalem artichokes. Larger dishes include John Dory with sprouting broccoli, nduja and Pil Pil, or a succulent brined and grilled pork chop with baked cabbage and walnut. Side dishes may consist of spring greens and ground nettles, red coral lettuce with orange dressing and, of course, the essential for meat dishes—shoestring French fries. For those in search of an excellent steak, a substantial (400g) O’Connor Porterhouse definitely fits the bill—that’s assuming they are able to resist the temptation of the even larger (600g) Murray Grey Rib Eye. Desserts such as the blood orange sorbet with burnt honey and vermouth, the nutmeg tart and the chocolate ice cream, cumquat jam and salted caramel provide a perfect excuse for indulging in an accompanying dessert wine, as does the selection of local and international cheeses. Trying to categorise Cumulus Up as a bar, wine bar, or restaurant is difficult, as it effortlessly meets the requirements of each, with a comprehensive and broad ranging wine list, staff well versed in the dark arts of cocktail mixology, and a menu which lends itself equally well to casual grazing or a full-scale dinner. This fluidity, along with the inviting nature of the venue itself, may go a long way to explaining how quickly Cumulus Up can fill, even early in the week—and accordingly reservations are advisable. Cumulus Up, Sun–Thu 5pm–late, Fri–Sat 4pm–late. Level 1, 45 Flinders Lane, Melbourne. 9650 1445. cumulusup.com.au

LES CLEFS D’OR By Nik Adams

MELBOURNE’S CONCIERGE WERE

lucky enough to start off the month with a trip down the Great Ocean Road to the Otways region. We were invited to come and sample the area, and were treated to plenty of fantastic food and drink. We visited some secret places that many of us had never seen before. Over the next few days we experienced zip lining through a rainforest and eating and drinking at some of the Otways’ famous restaurants and casual eating places. We were treated to some of Victoria’s history at the Cape Otway Lighthouse and also learnt about its Aboriginal history as well.

STATE DIRECTOR FOR VICTORIA

A highlight was having lunch at the giant redwood forest. It was such a spectacular place and I would recommend it, when you are next at the Great Ocean Road. ■ What is now becoming an annual dinner for the concierge of Melbourne, we were invited back to Donovans in St Kilda by its owners Kevin and Gail. With a beautiful backdrop of the sun setting over the beach, we indulged in some of Donovans classic menu items including crab cakes, smoked salmon and, everyone’s favourite, the traditional Beef Wellington. Not only did we have great food but we also experienced some of the warmest hospitality in Melbourne.

LES CLEFS D’OR INTERNATIONAL Past President: COLIN TOOMEY, The Shangri-La Hotel, Sydney General Secretary: JAMES RIDENOUR, InterContinental Melbourne The Rialto

AUSTRALIAN EXECUTIVE President: PETER MCBREARTY, The Langham, Melbourne Secretary: DAVID LUFF, Crown Towers Perth Treasurer: BEN DAVIES, The Langham, Melbourne

■ The Australian Ballet returned to Melbourne with their latest production, “Symphony in C”. Combining classical and contemporary ballet, several concierge went along to view the performance. For many of us it was a new experience, but all agreed that it was a very enjoyable night. The grand finale was a classic ending of multiple ballerinas in white tutus!
