Discover the “Super 70s” in this new exhibition. THE NATIONAL TRUST of Australia (Victoria) presents a brand new exhibition all about fashion in the 1970s. “Super 70s” is an immersive exhibition at the historic Rippon Lea Estate. Peruse the estate and discover 1970s garments and accessories from the National Trust’s Costume Collection, as well as rare collection items by Australian design icons including Prue Acton, Sally Browne, Clarence Chai and The House of Merivale. There will also be a series of special events including a disco in the Rippon Lea ballroom, a record fair featuring vintage vinyls, a car show showcasing classic vehicles from the 1970s and curator talks focusing on the making and inspiration behind the exhibition. RUNNING THROUGH THE HEART of the city like a big artery, the Yarra River has become the hub for myriad activities, both active and leisurely. Here’s our guide to making the most of Melbourne’s beloved waterway.

MAIN YARRA TRAIL Around bends, past waterfalls, over bridges and alongside picnic spots, the Main Yarra Trail cycling route is a 33-kilometre love-in for anyone on two wheels or two feet. The mainly bitumen and concrete path starts in the leafy north-eastern suburb of Eltham and finishes on a gradual descent at Flinders Street Station, but you can access it at any point along the way to take a shorter ride. HERRING ISLAND There is only one island on the Yarra and it was artificially made in 1928 when a basalt quarry was cut to stop the suburb of Richmond from flooding. The upshot to this engineering marvel is a remarkable bush oasis, teeming with flora and fauna, just three kilometres from the city. Boaters can pull up at the pier to access the permanent outdoor sculpture park and a central grassy knoll with barbecues and picnic tables. Most Melburnians have seen the Gotham City-style silhouettes of the city’s greyheaded flying foxes (commonly known as fruit bats) as they make their dusk dash across the city, but few have seen their flight begin. At Bellbird Picnic Point along the Yarra River off Yarra Bend Boulevard inquisitive onlookers can witness, David Attenborough-style, the mass exodus of tens of thousands of these lovable native creatures as they awaken from their upsidedown position in the trees then take flight on their daily search for fruit, pollens and nectar. STUDLEY PARK BOATHOUSE Ladies pick up a parasol, gents don your boater, the genteel leisure activity known as rowing is still alive and well at Studley Park Boathouse on the river in Kew. With the native bushland either side and the dappled shade of eucalypt trees overhead, punters can hire a rowboat for a paddle under the picturesque nearby footbridge, or a kayak or canoe for something a bit more strenuous.

Mandela Brings Hope A new exhibition at Melbourne Museum explores the life of Nelson Mandela.

THIS MONTH MELBOURNE IS HOME to the world premiere of the much-anticipated “Mandela My Life: The Official Exhibition” at Melbourne Museum. The 800m² exhibition includes outstanding artworks, original artefacts and genuine replications of rare content from the Nelson Mandela archives, including manuscripts from his writings in prison, taking visitors through a multi-sensory, interactive, educational and emotive journey of Mandela’s 95 years of life. The exhibit has been expertly designed by iEC Exhibitions and curated by a team of Museums Victoria staff and the lead curator, Samantha

Heywood of iEC Exhibitions. We sat down with Samantha as the team were putting the final touches on the exhibition, to find out all about this fascinating insight into Mandela’s extraordinary life. Much of the life of Nelson Mandela will be considered modern history now. How do you think the exhibition will reach through to younger generations? The story of apartheid and oppression is, unfortunately, an on-going story and people of all ages can relate to this struggle. Younger generations can learn and develop from the exhibition a deep understanding of the challenges and the struggle that Madiba

(Mandela's clan name) took his people on. The other aspect is to learn his enormous understanding of wanting the best outcome for both white and black people—his vision of a rainbow nation is one of the most amazing stories of the last century. It’s such a moving story. Is there a particular part of the exhibition that touched you the most? The opening gallery—we take you back to his famous trial in Pretoria when he delivers an amazing speech from the

dock declaring he is prepared to die for his and the African people’s cause. It is so beautifully recreated and is such a compelling speech; it’s a not to be missed moment for sure! What are some of the original objects/ artefacts that will be featured in the exhibit? It is indeed a very rich collection of writings, artefacts and memorabilia—the largest ever to travel outside of South Africa. Of course, we have the extraordinary 16 paintings of the great South African artist, John Meyer; letters and excerpts from his journals whilst on Robbin Island; many original pieces from the time of Apartheid in South Africa, ballot papers and ANC posters; sporting memorabilia he was presented over the years and personal items from his rich and distinguished life. What do you consider the most significant object/s in the exhibition? For me personally, I think his journals and writings, particularly those whilst he was incarcerated at Robbin Island are the most interesting and moving. Having said that, with over 200 items in the collection everyone will have a different take on what appeals or interests them here. Have you learnt anything new after putting the exhibition together? His enormous respect and balance in trying to bring all the people of South Africa together; before working on this project I didn’t have that aspect of his life. It makes Madiba an enormous merchant of change. What is one thing you hope visitors take away with them after experiencing the exhibition? Hope! He wanted to bring about change— to give everyone a real chance to be a contributing member of society. He was prepared to die for it and he spent much of his life in jail, even when he could have been released, to give hope and real belief to his cause. “Mandela My Life: The Official Exhibition” opens on 22 September at Melbourne Museum, 11 Nicholson Street, Carlton. The exhibit presents the significant body of work Myuran Sukumaran produced while incarcerated in Bali’s Kerobokan Prison, Denpasar and during the final 72 hours of his life spent on Nusa Kambangan Island. ECHUCA MOAMA Visit the famed Echuca Moama region and see abandoned steamboats and barges, tall red gum wharfs and beautiful old station homesteads. The riverboat days were glorious times for Echuca—until a great depression hit in the 1890s. As the railways were extended and road transport improved, the river trade declined and the old wharf, built in 1865, was defunct by the 1920s.
