n Jan. 17, 1988, I was onboard the USS Bunker Hill (CG-52) as we pulled out of Pearl Harbor and set sail for home in San Diego, California. On the radio, my shipmates and I heard my favorite team, the Washington Redskins, hold on for a thrilling last-second win in the NFC Championship Game. That meant they would be heading to the Super Bowl in San Diego. With a week transit across the Pacific, I would be there to see the biggest game of the year— possibly in person. There were tickets to be had—above face price of course. Regrettably, I didn’t shell out some money—I seem to recall I could have gotten an end zone seat for $300. I doubt a young sailor could fork out the kind of money that would be asked of him or her today. The saving grace back in 1988 was that as the host city, San Diego was hopping and there were always events happening. And sailors are not averse to a party atmosphere. Whether or not you attend the Super Bowl, you’ll have the chance to get out and feel the excitement that a Super Bowl game brings, and participate in the myriad events that will take place in the Miami area leading up to Feb. 2. Join us to discover the best celebrations. Beyond the Super Bowl we’ve got you covered on visits to Fort Lauderdale and Little Havana. Get out and explore!

things that make it so special. I can easily name my Top 3: The multicultural hub it is, is definitely what I love the most. But also, I have to mention the two most beloved Miami features by the great majority, including me: the weather and the beaches.
State Park in North Miami Beach. If you are looking for a beach with calm waters, a very relaxing atmosphere where you can paddle board, kayak, ride your bicycle or just go for a picnic without really having to to leave the city but still get away from it all, that is the place to go.
Q: WHERE ARE YOUR FAVORITE SPOTS FOR THE QUINTESSENTIAL MIAMI SELFIE? A: I would say the
Wynwood Walls gate entrance, but also think the Colony Hotel on Ocean Drive is the quintessential example of Art Deco style that goes hand-in-hand with the [Wynwood] Walls gate.

Ball & Chain is Little Havana’s longstanding lounge and nightclub, offering live music and drinks evoking images of Cuba. Traditional Old’s Havana Cuban Bar & Cocina is next to Domino Park, where you can find classic cocktails like the Little Havana Mule and Martini.
Maximo Gomez Park is also known as “Domino Park” to the locals who congregate there to play. Follow the domino-tiled walkway to the action. The Calle Ocho Walk of Fame immortalizes Latin artists and organizations with embedded pink marble stars in the sidewalk.
At El Exquisito, enjoy breakfast, lunch or dinner at this landmark family-style restaurant with Cuban-specific food like a sandwich with plaintains, croquetas and cantimpalo. El Pub provides an authentic Cuban experience in a diner-style setting. Freshbrewed Cuban coffee starts the morning and sandwiches are always recommended.
The historic Tower Theater is one of Miami’s oldest cultural landmarks. Enjoy a full bar and take in the works of Cuban masters through fine art, dance and more at Cubaocho Museum and Performing Arts Center.

HOW TO SPEND 24 HOURS IN FORT LAUDERDALE Fort Lauderdale offers plenty of fun for travelers of all ages. From water sports and beaches to fabulous dining and craft beer, here’s a perfect itinerary for solo travelers, families and couples looking for a quick getaway. Sara Ventiera
Watch the sunrise over the beach—or just wake up and head east. Start the day off at Burlock Coast Seafare & Spirits. Set at The Ritz-Carlton, Fort Lauderdale, the beachfront patio is the ideal place to enjoy the ocean breeze before a dip in the Atlantic. On weekends, it offers a selection of unlimited brunch cocktails for just $25. After a quick swim or rest on the sand, hustle up to Sunrise Paddleboards for one of its Venice of America tours. Instructors take a group of paddlers past the multimillion-dollar mansions and mega-yachts owned by the rich and famous that line the city’s famous canals and waterways. Lucky guests may even get up close and personal with manatees in search of warm waters. Next, head south to the Bonnet House
AFTERNOON Ditch the car and hail a ride in true Fort Lauderdale fashion—aboard the brightly colored Water Taxi. Head toward Las Olas Boulevard via The Shops at Las Olas. Grab a table on the convivial sidewalk patio at Louie Bossi, snack on a wood-fired Margherita pie and watch the passers-by. Then, peruse the shops and walk over to Gran Forno for dessert. Take the rest of the afternoon to unwind at The Spa at Fort Lauderdale Marriott Harbor Beach Resort & Spa. The beachside resort is considered one of the top spas in town due to its
visually stunning location, well-appointed facilities (including private pool, steam room, sauna and whirlpool) and high-end services.
EVENING Retox after detoxing at Funky Buddha Brewery. Sip culinary-inspired beers like Pineapple Beach and OP Porter while hanging with locals and craft beer aficionados hailing from far and wide. Folks travel from across the country to sample these acclaimed brews. Strike up a conversation over a game of corn hole or giant Jenga. Next door, discover lively Haitian food—with Jamaican and Caribbean choices as well—at Alberte’s Restaurant. Pull up a seat on the outdoor patio, and enjoy live music Friday and Saturday nights. If, after all that, you’ve still got energy to spare, dance the night away at Stache Drinking Den + Coffee Bar. The downtown speakeasy crafts some of the best whiskey cocktails and brings in some of the area’s top DJs.
