March/April 2019 Springtime in Miami means the official season is winding down and we can enjoy the sweet lull before the extreme heat sets in. That doesn’t mean that we can’t have fun too! Contributor Sara Liss’ healthy dining out roundup comes at the perfect time, as does the opportunity to rev up our wardrobe with pieces from local jewelry designers featured in “The Fix.” As always, these pages are fi lled with places that will inspire you to make the most of your time here. This will be my last issue, but make sure to look for my byline here and elsewhere as I continue to scour SOFLA (and beyond) for fun and fabulous experiences.

J. STEVEN MANOLIS WHAT ART CRITICS AND HISTORIANS ARE SAYING...

“When it comes to Color, and the intellectual pursuit of ‘Communicating Through Color,’ Wassily Kandinsky’s long-awaited heir-to-be is J. Steven Manolis, whose works signal an ebullient 21st century renaissance of the long absent glories of Abstract Expressionism.” DONALD KUSPIT Leading Art Critic and Renowned Historian, New York City “J. Steven Manolis is one of the foremost practitioners of Abstract Expressionism today, his brilliant brushstrokes as bewitching as those of AbEx forefather Clyfford Still (originally from North Dakota). Manolis’ REDWORLD is a display of passion, productivity and powerful technique.” ELIZABETH SOBIESKI Former Contributing Editor, The Art Economist; Arts writer, The Huffington Post, Cosmopolitan, New York and Los Angeles “There’s so much well-made but facile, unfelt abstraction around these days that it can come as a shock to be confronted by the real stuff. And that’s what J. Steven Manolis unfailingly provides. Each and every piece generates an energy, which is at once explosively physical and evidence of a mind at work. Like the birth of a world.” ANTHONY HADEN-GUEST British-American writer and art critic The New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Slade Business Journal, New York and London “A trajectory of Manolis’ current work reveals that the artist has scrupulously mastered and applied both the techniques and chromatic relations identified with celebrated artists... besides Jackson Pollock, we find elements of Frankenthaler, Lee Krasner, Dubuffet, Adolph Gottlieb and Clyfford Still. As Manolis’ work chooses and dominates so many of the signature methods of his forebearers it is still remarkable that the artist elicits a dynamic depth that we associate with Hans Hofmann.” DREW HAMMOND Leading Art Critic, Writer and Contemporary Art Consultant, Berlin and Beijing “Manolis has captured the essence of post abstract expressionism with a brand new identifiable voice that has propelled him into the spotlight as his illustrious career takes off into a permanent orbit like a comet that gains speed and fame as it lights up the atmosphere… He’s a Rocket Man… !” BRUCE HELANDER Former Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Rhode Island School of Design Former White House Fellow of the Nation Endowment for the Arts, West Palm Beach, FL

IN MIAMI IT’S BIKINI SEASON ALL YEAR LONG which is what prompts many of us to look for healthy options when we’re dining out. And yes, while the city has become a mecca for vegans and vegetarians, there are still some places that offer “clean” eats without being strictly of that ilk. Here are our favorite spots for eating wisely and stylishly.

16 W H E R E I M A R C H / A P R I L 2019

KIKI ON THE RIVER This upscale Greek spot on the Miami River is perfect for the simple pleasures of the Mediterranean - salt-crusted fish kissed with olive oil, grilled vegetables, fresh salads bursting with flavorful tomatoes and feta. Practically no carbs if you don't want them...although one bite of the lemony baked potatoes and you might reconsider that "no starch" rule.

MALIBU FARMS Almost the entire menu at this oceanfront oasis is designed with healthy eating in mind. An outpost of the West Coast original, expect California-style dishes of cauliflower crust pizza topped with pesto and heirloom tomatoes, a chicken ricotta burger and spaghetti squash lasagna. And

Dining out in SOFLA doesn’t mean you have to break your resolutions.

Practically no carbs if you don't want them...although one bite of the lemony baked potatoes and you might reconsider that "no starch" rule. if you're craving a bit of vice, there's frosé on tap in addition to a full cocktail menu that incorporates infused organic agaves with local produce.

ICEBOX CAFÉ This Sunset Harbour haunt is a hit with local yogis who frequent the studios in the area surrounding the cafe. Basics like avocado toast topped with roasted tomatoes to ropa vieja lettuce wraps to a smoked turkey Reuben are healthy takes on comfort food. But if you're really trying to cut calories, avoid the dessert menu at all costs - this place is famous for their multi-layer "icebox" cakes, after all.

JAFFA AT ST. ROCH MARKET Housed in the Design District's sleek food hall this "stall" serves Mediterranean eats devised by owner Yaniv Cohen aka "The Spice Detective" and his affinity for holistic cooking and Israeli cuisine. Hummus here comes topped with classic chickpeas or tumeric wild mushrooms while the deconstructed Babaganoush is a whole-roasted eggplant topped with sumac-spiced tahini.

Don't miss the whole-roasted turmeric cauliflower, served with zahtar-spiced tahini.

LA CENTRALE This sprawling food hall focused on Italian cooking has enough options that guests wanting to go light on the “dolce vita” lifestyle can do so. The first floor features pasta and pizza stations while upstairs the stand-alone restaurants provide lighter fare like vegetarian-friendly dishes at Stagionale and artfully-plated fish at the crudo bar at Pesce.

EL VEZ A cavernous Mexican cantina from restaurateur Stephen Starr this is where you'll go for lighter takes on classics like the "verde guacamole" with extra herbs and Meyer lemon or the colorful ceviches like the snapper aguachile with ginger, toasted morita chile and cucumber. The kale salad comes with a vegan caesar dressing and sides of grilled corn and watermelon salads are a nice counterbalance to the queso and rice and beans one usually encounters at Mexican joints.
