DUOMO Among one of the most important Gothic buildings in the world, the church constructed over a period of 450 years is the symbol of Milan. To experience the Duomo at its most majestic you must ascend to the roof. 6 GALLERIA VITTORIO EMANUELE II Sometimes known as “the living-room of the Milanese”, this elegant, four-storey arcade, housing luxury cafés and famous designer shops, is covered by a glass barrel vault and a beautiful glass cupola. 5 CASTELLO SFORZESCO The ancient seat of the ruling Visconti, it was later rebuilt by Francesco Sforza and is now simply known by the Milanese as “Il Castello”. CENACOLO VINCIANO One of the most famous attractions in the world, “The Last Supper” by Leonardo da Vinci is a 15th century large mural painting representing the scene of the last supper of Jesus narrated in the Gospel. This fragile masterpiece was painted by Leonardo using a technique that was chemically imperfect and by the early 16th century it has started to flake and decay, resulting in numerous restorations. 7 PALAZZO REALE Formerly the residence of all those who governed Milan, from Napoleon to the Royal House of Savoy, the Royal Palace is currently one of the most important cultural centres in the city, hosting exhibitions of international renown. Near the Duomo, it’s the perfect place to escape the crowds of the Duomo’s square.

AMBROSIANA The Picture Gallery contains several exquisite works of art from the 15th through 17th centuries. The Biblioteca Federiciana has on show Leonardo’s Codex Atlanticus. NAVIGLI The Navigli are artificial canals built 800 years ago to ferry people and merchandise to Milan. This network was perfected in 1457 by Leonardo da Vinci. Today, the area is bursting with trendy dining and nightlife spots. SAN SIRO STADIUM With a capacity of 80,000 seats, Milan football stadium is the largest stadium in Italy and the fourth in Europe. SANT’AMBROGIO - One of the most ancient churches in Milan, it was built in 379-386 A.D., in an area where martyrs had been buried.

PORTA NUOVA DISTRICT A vibrant, futuristic district overlooking two neighbourhoods: the Garibaldi and Isola districts. The heart of the area is the large raised square dedicated to architect and designer Gae Aulenti. The New Leonardo da Vinci DECEMBER Galleries at the Museum of Science and Technology, which re-opened to the public last month, is the largest permanent exhibition in the world and uses a strictly scientific approach to enlighten visitors about the person, and work of Leonardo the engineer, humanist and explorer of nature. A spectacular setting accompanies visitors on a journey that starting from Florence in the 15th century, traces Leonardo’s training and the influence of Tuscan engineers, up to his stay in Milan during the rule of the Sforza family. The journey through the art of war, work and production, flight, waterways and architecture ends with an overview of Leonardo’s influence on Lombard Renaissance painting, and an immersive installation dedicated to the drawings that he executed during the last years of his life. ◄ In 2017, Letizia Battaglia (Palermo, 1935) was described by the New York Times as one of the eleven most amazing women in the world. She is one of the most influential figures in contemporary photography, for her famous shots, and for the civic and ethical value she brings to her photography. She is a non-conformist intellectual, and a poetic and political photographer, who took an interest in everything around her and anything that roused her curiosity. The exhibition, featuring 300 images, explores all aspects of her professional life: portraits, cities, news stories and everyday events; images focusing on politics, life, death and love.

Held at Fieramilanocity from 9 to 11 February, the event is gearing up to strengthen both its position of leadership in the travel industry in Italy, and as a gauge of trends in the sector. BitMilano’s strong point is its tie to Milan, a city that plays a key role in the trade fair industry and in the Italian and international tourism sector, acting as a backdrop for events of international scope, including Fashion or Design Week. The Lombard capital is the only Italian city listed in the world’s top 20 most visited cities. It is ranked 16th, with more than nine million tourists in 2018 and a growth prospect of 2.02% for 2019. Hall of Fame I The penultimate month of the year means only one thing for chefs and foodies across the world, and finally, the wait is over: the 2020 Michelin Guide is out. Italy has confirmed its second place ranking in the world, with 374 starred restaurants, behind France and ahead of Spain, and the figures for food and wine tourism in our country continue to increase year after year. n early November, temperatures drop, encouraging us to snuggle up in the warmth of our homes; the trees are almost bare, and we’ve taken out our old warm padded jackets. But there’s a whole group of people for whom early November means only one thing: the publication of the new Michelin Guide! For chefs, industry members and foodies throughout the country, there’s a single topic of conversation. “Have you heard? Rumour has it that X is up for a second star!” “It looks as if ‘Y’ might lose his. Poor thing, his restaurant is always empty!” The Michelin Guide, which is celebrating its 65th anniversary this year, is globally renowned for its revered star system. There are chefs who dedicate their whole lives to earning this soughtafter star, others who fall into depression if they lose it, and still others for whom it remains a distant dream. If you enjoy eating well, and uncritically trust the ratings given by the red guide (thus called due to its characteristic red cover), you’re in the right region, because Viviana Varese

Lombardy is ranked number one in Italy for its starred restaurants,, of which there are 62, followed by Piedmont and Campania. Milan alone boast 20 establishments that have earned at least one star. More specifically, the city of Milan boasts one three-star restaurant, three two-star restaurants and sixteen one-star restaurants, including two new entries. Here’s a closer look.

Gold and silver medals Let’s start with the winners’ podium, beginning with the person who can be considered the gold medalist of Milanese cuisine: forty year-old chef Enrico Bartolini, whose restaurant, Bartolini al Mudec, at Mudec-Museo delle Culture, has won a third star.

”The chef’s personality stands out for research and experimentation, blending perfectly with Milan’s dynamism and giving an artist’s touch to the rich Italian gastronomic heritage,” these are the words used by the Michelin inspectors (www.enricobartolini. net). A silver medal, or two Michelin stars, were awarded to three iconic Milanese restaurants, two of which are found inside luxury hotels. Il Luogo di Aimo e Nadia, located on the outskirts, in the southwest district of Milan, is a fail-safe address, headed by chefs Alessandro Negrini and Fabio Pisani. Creativity and tradition are

perfectly measured in a dish that, not unexpectedly, is called ‘A Tribute to Milan’: tortelli filled with Fassona beef ossobuco and marrow bone in a reduction of Sardinian saffron and Bonati Parmesan cheese (aimoenadia.com). Inside the luxurious Mandarin Hotel, within walking distance of via Montenapoleone, we find Seta. Antonio Guida, Pugliese by birth, but Milanese by adoption, offers a menu based on Mediterranean flavours, sometimes infused with exotic influences. A plus for wine connoisseurs is a wine list featuring 500 labels. The ambience is formal, and guests can choose to dine at the chef’s table, inside the kitchen: an exclusive setting for two people, that offers diners a rare experience, dining while watching the chef and his team at work (www.mandarinoriental.com). At another hotel, you’ll find Vun at the Park Hyatt. Chef Andrea Aprea, the restaurant’s executive chef, creates a menu designed for an international clientele. His cuisine highlights raw materials and the best of Lombardy’s regional offerings, plus a few dishes with the immediately recognizable character of his Campanian origins. One such example is a tasting menu evocatively named ‘Percorsi Partenopei’ (Neapolitan Itineraries), plus a wine pairing option with Campanian wines (www.ristorante-vun.it).

offers a contemporary, minimalist cuisine, that matches the clean-cut, simple design of the locale and its futuristic surroundings. Standouts include the ‘risottos’, but there’s also an original menu called ‘A tutto brodo’ (Broth tasting menu), where everything, from antipasti to desserts, is composed entirely of broths (www.ristoranteberton.com). Contraste, the kingdom of Uruguayan Chef Matias Perdomo, is located in a hidden courtyard in the Navigli district. His hallmark feature is his creative cuisine, expressed in surprising signature dishes, featuring unusual pairings and eye-catching culinary tromp l’œil. (www.contrastemilano.it). Much talked-about Chef Carlo Cracco, who has assumed star status on Milan’s culinary scene, is the owner of the same name restaurant in the Galleria

The idea of the Michelin Guide was conceived by the Michelin brothers Édouard and André in 1898, nine years after the establishment of the Manufacture Française des Pneumatiques Michelin. Almost as a game, the two entrepreneurs began publishing a small guide that would make the travels of French motorists more appealing. The guide listed the names of railway stations, doctors and pharmacists, mechanics and petrol stations, and obviously tyre mechanics, located in approximately 2,000 towns. Over time, the guide expanded to the industry that made it famous – fine dining. The rest is history.

Iyo Aalto, the new dining destination located on the first floor of Torre Solaria, is this and more. Here, two distinct gastronomic concepts come to life, a Sushi Counter inspired by the Japanese tradition of edomae zushi, and a Gastronomic Restaurant. The former, designed to seat just eight guests in its cozy, exclusive dining room, offers a typical omakase menu that includes ‘nigiri’ infused with seasonal ingredients as well as specialties that are either steamed or coal-grilled on a robatayaki. Camparino, the ‘new’ aperitivo The historic Camparino in Galleria has re-opened after a meticulous structural and conceptual restyling, focusing on an innovative concept of cuisine created around Campari cocktails. By Chiara Zaccarelli

hat’s more Milanese than an aperitivo? It was in Camparino in Galleria, a legendary locale, situated in an equally noteworthy location, that the Milanese aperitivo ritual achieved its high point. Established in 1915 in Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II by Davide Campari, it instantly became a big hit with the Milanese. Today, following an in-depth renovation, it has re-opened its doors to the public with a revamped menu and identity. Campari and starred chef Davide Oldani have teamed up to bring customers a new concept of cuisine, designed to be paired with Campari cocktails. When Lombardy and Tuscany meet The Basilica di Sant’Eustorgio, the ancient headquarters of Milan’s Domenican Order, hosts the Portinari Chapel, a masterpiece of Lombard Renaissance. By Giulia Minero

he Basilica di Sant’Eustorgio was built upon the spot where, according to tradition, the stone sarcophagus containing the remains of the Three Kings, donated to Sant’Eustorgio by Constantine I, was left during its onward journey to the Basilica of Santa Tecla. However, the biggest draw at this large Neo-Romanesque church, which still hosts a part of the remains, is the Portinari Chapel, one of the most important masterpieces of Lombard Renaissance in Milan. The chapel, built between 1462 and 1468 in honour of St. Peter Martyr, was commissioned by the Florentine nobleman Pigello Portinari. It is a surprising example of the interplay between typical Florentine architecture, represented by a small apse and a main 56 W H E R E M I L A N I JMAAY N UA 2017 R Y 2020

square-plan space surmounted by a dome, and Milanese decorative elements. The cycle of frescoes by Vincenzo Foppa, located beneath the multi-coloured sixteen-section dome, interacts with the monumental Carrara marble ark of St. Peter Martyr, comprising a sarcophagus, with eight tiles featuring scenes from the life of the saint, interspersed with eight figures of saints. Museo del Duomo Totally refurbished in 2013, the museum houses and highlights all the material not presently

The Shoah Memorial of Milan is located in an area under the railway tracks of the Central Station, where mail was loaded and offloaded. This was the place where, between 1943 and 1945, sheltered from preying eyes, thousands of Jews and political deportees were loaded onto freight cars, via an elevator platform that was used to lift such cars up to the main platform. These transports were then connected to convoys leaving for Auschwitz-Birkenau and other German camps, or Italian camps such as Fossoli and Bolzano. Among all the places used as deportation sites in Europe, the Memorial is the only one that has remained intact. Today it is a commemorative place that honours

the victims of the mass extermination, and also represents a ‘living, educational memorial’ where people can actively experience the tragedy of the Shoah. Museo Teatrale alla Scala Founded in 1913, it recently underwent an important makeover and is dedicated to the history of the famous Milan Opera House with a vast collection of musical instruments and documents dedicated to famous musicians, including Verdi and Toscanini. Pirelli HangarBicocca A former industrial plant, HangarBicocca is a lively cultural space dedicated to the production, display and promotion of contemporary art. Shortly after opening its doors to the public, MIC (Italian Film Library Foundation), an absolute must-visit for film buffs, was ranked among the 20 most widely visited museums in Milan. Housed in a former tobacco factory, an industrial site of historic interest, it was recently converted into an interactive cultural hub dedicated to films. The museum offers visitors an innovative experience where they can interact with devices and applications, dub films, create soundtracks, edit footage, improve their knowledge thanks to a vast library, and use dynamic maps to find out which locations in Milan were used to shoot movies and locate cinemas in the city, even those that are no longer operative. But there’s more. The journey continues in the Film Archive, which houses a log of films that are generally inaccessible to the public. These include 25,000 titles, including ‘Rocco and His Brothers’ and ‘Blade Runner’. By wearing a pair of Epson Moverio BT smart glasses and headphones, visitors simply look at the QR codes next to exhibits. This triggers video and audio content in qHD (Quad High Definition). Triennale Milano The Triennale Milano is one of the most vibrant, popular and important exhibition centres in the city. Featuring annually changing exhibitions of note, it also owns the most important permanent collection of design works.
