Dear Visitor, Welcome to Milan! Our country has been a world tourism destination for more than 500 years, even before the word ‘tourism’ was coined in the XIX century. Now that more than one billion tourists travel throughout the world annually, Italy is the fifth most visited country in the world with 58.3 million tourists. And it’s not a coincidence.

If you’re here on a pleasure trip, you already know why Italy has such enormous appeal. If, on the other hand, you’re here for business, look around and let Where® be your guide. You can use our magazine as a manual to discover and enjoy the country’s most unique aspects. Whether it’s a question of history, beautiful landscapes, the number of different experiences available, the food, or the warm, friendly people, remember that the diversity of this unique country is embodied within just a few kilometers: from the north to the south, from the east to the west, from the sea to the mountains, from the countryside to the art cities. Don’t forget that only a few kilometers from where you are now, you can enjoy the experiences of a lifetime.

CENACOLO VINCIANO One of the most famous attractions in the world, “The Last Supper” by Leonardo da Vinci is a 15th century large mural painting representing the scene of the last supper of Jesus narrated in the Gospel. This fragile masterpiece was painted by Leonardo using a technique that was chemically imperfect and by the early 16th century it has started to flake and decay, resulting in numerous restorations. 7 PALAZZO REALE Formerly the residence of all those who governed Milan, from Napoleon to the Royal House of Savoy, the Royal Palace is currently one of the most important cultural centres in the city, hosting exhibitions of international renown. Near the Duomo, it’s the perfect place to escape the crowds of the Duomo’s square.

A JOURNEY TO REDISCOVER THE LIFE OF A GENIUS

The New Leonardo da Vinci DECEMBER Galleries at the Museum of Science and Technology, which re-opened to the public last month, is the largest permanent exhibition in the world and uses a strictly scientific approach to enlighten visitors about the person, and work of Leonardo the engineer, humanist and explorer of nature. A spectacular setting accompanies visitors on a journey that starting from Florence in the 15th century, traces Leonardo’s training and the influence of Tuscan engineers, up to his stay in Milan during the rule of the Sforza family. The journey through the art of war, work and production, flight, waterways and architecture ends with an overview of Leonardo’s influence on Lombard Renaissance painting, and an immersive installation dedicated to the drawings that he executed during the last years of his life. Hall of Fame I The penultimate month of the year means only one thing for chefs and foodies across the world, and finally, the wait is over: the 2020 Michelin Guide is out. Italy has confirmed its second place ranking in the world, with 374 starred restaurants, behind France and ahead of Spain, and the figures for food and wine tourism in our country continue to increase year after year. BY CHIARA ZACCARELLI

n early November, temperatures drop, encouraging us to snuggle up in the warmth of our homes; the trees are almost bare, and we’ve taken out our old warm padded jackets. But there’s a whole group of people for whom early November means only one thing: the publication of the new Michelin Guide! For chefs, industry members and foodies throughout the country, there’s a single topic of conversation. “Have you heard? Rumour has it that X is up for a second star!” “It looks as if ‘Y’ might lose his. Poor thing, his restaurant is always empty!” The Michelin Guide, which is celebrating its 65th anniversary this year, is globally renowned for its revered star system. There are chefs who dedicate their whole lives to earning this soughtafter star, others who fall into depression if they lose it, and still others for whom it remains a distant dream. If you enjoy eating well, and uncritically trust the ratings given by the red guide (thus called due to its characteristic red cover), you’re in the right region, because Viviana Varese

Lombardy is ranked number one in Italy for its starred restaurants,, of which there are 62, followed by Piedmont and Campania. Milan alone boast 20 establishments that have earned at least one star. More specifically, the city of Milan boasts one three-star restaurant, three two-star restaurants and sixteen one-star restaurants, including two new entries. Here’s a closer look.

Gold and silver medals Let’s start with the winners’ podium, beginning with the person who can be considered the gold medalist of Milanese cuisine: forty year-old chef Enrico Bartolini, whose restaurant, Bartolini al Mudec, at Mudec-Museo delle Culture, has won a third star.

”The chef’s personality stands out for research and experimentation, blending perfectly with Milan’s dynamism and giving an artist’s touch to the rich Italian gastronomic heritage,” these are the words used by the Michelin inspectors (www.enricobartolini. net). A silver medal, or two Michelin stars, were awarded to three iconic Milanese restaurants, two of which are found inside luxury hotels. Il Luogo di Aimo e Nadia, located on the outskirts, in the southwest district of Milan, is a fail-safe address, headed by chefs Alessandro Negrini and Fabio Pisani. Creativity and tradition are

perfectly measured in a dish that, not unexpectedly, is called ‘A Tribute to Milan’: tortelli filled with Fassona beef ossobuco and marrow bone in a reduction of Sardinian saffron and Bonati Parmesan cheese (aimoenadia.com). Inside the luxurious Mandarin Hotel, within walking distance of via Montenapoleone, we find Seta. Antonio Guida, Pugliese by birth, but Milanese by adoption, offers a menu based on Mediterranean flavours, sometimes infused with exotic influences. A plus for wine connoisseurs is a wine list featuring 500 labels. The ambience is formal, and guests can choose to dine at the chef’s table, inside the kitchen: an exclusive setting for two people, that offers diners a rare experience, dining while watching the chef and his team at work (www.mandarinoriental.com). Enrico Bartolini serves a type of cuisine that he refers to as ‘contemporary classic’, a blend of innovation and tradition. w w w.wh e re t rave l e r. com 13

Best restaurants in Milan Our more inquisitive readers might ask themselves how the Michelin Guide made a tyre company the world’s fine dining authority. The idea of the Michelin Guide was conceived by the Michelin brothers Édouard and André in 1898, nine years after the establishment of the Manufacture Française des Pneumatiques Michelin. Almost as a game, the two entrepreneurs began publishing a small guide that would make the travels of French motorists more appealing. The guide listed the names of railway stations, doctors and pharmacists, mechanics and petrol stations, and obviously tyre mechanics, located in approximately 2,000 towns. Over time, the guide expanded to the industry that made it famous – fine dining. The rest is history.

The menu features dishes like ’Violet shrimp, vanilla cocoa and Kaluga Amour caviar’, as well as more classic dishes like ‘Traditional Bolognese Lasagna’ (www.lumemilano.com). Claudio Sadler, the owner of the Sadler restaurant, in the Naviglio Pavese area, describes his cuisine as ‘evolving modern cuisine’ and sees it as a contribution to renewal. He does not enjoy only cooking traditional dishes, believing that if these two extremes are well balanced, they can offer unique tastes. The restaurant’s setting is also extremely attractive: elegant tables, dim lighting, plus contemporary works of art displayed on a rotational basis (sadler.it). Tano Passami l’Olio is one of Milan’s most

historic restaurants which has tranquilly retained its Michelin star for years. Its Chef Tano Simonato is opposed to using butter and sautéed vegetables, which he considers too heavy, preferring instead to focus on preserving the integrity of the selected ingredients. Signature dishes include ‘Caramelized quail’s egg on a bed of tuna mousse with bottarga, raw marinated tuna’ and ‘Spaghetti alla chitarra with chicken egg bottarga’. He recently left the historic location on the Navigli and moved to the Cadorna area (www.tanopassamilolio.it). Yoji Tokuyoshi, a pupil of world-renowned Chef Massimo Bottura, combines Italian

culture with Japanese precision. When dining at Tokuyoshi, don’t expect Tokuyoshi sushi, sashimi or other similar dishes, because Japan expresses itself at this locale with small discreet details, including the bowls of broth that accompany many of the dishes. Don’t miss the chef’s signature dish: 'Gyotaku mackerel', a tribute to the ancient art of Japanese fishermen who dipped fish in ink to impress their shapes on prints. The surprise Omakase tasting menu, meaning ‘leave it up to the chef’ in Japanese, is designed to fully represent the restaurant’s concept, and is an absolute must (www.ristorantetokuyoshi.com). Located in front of the La Scala Opera House, Trussardi alla Scala is another venue that needs no introduction. A trendy, popular address that despite having lost one of its two stars, is still a go-to destination in the city, especially for prestigious business lunches. The restaurant’s chef serves creative cuisine, infused with a symphony of flavours, including iconic dishes like its ‘Spaghetto cacio e pepe with sea-urchins’ (www.trussardiallascala.com). Viviana Varese, the only female chef in this male-dominated ranking, has retained her star and revamped her look. Her restaurant, located on the first floor of the Eataly Milano Smeraldo complex, in Piazza XXV Aprile, recently changed its formula and name. Formerly called Alice, it is now known as VIVA (an acronym of the chef’s name). The menu is infused with a Mediterranean feel, including fish, which is one of her hallmark dishes, and an abundance of locally sourced vegetables and a few exotic ingredients, enhanced with colour, vibrancy and joie de vivre (www.vivavivianavarese.it).

Hats off to Borsalino An iconic sign in gold leaf on a black background has marked the presence of the Borsalino brand in the heart of the Galleria designed by Giuseppe Mengoni for over 136 years. By Giulia Minero

S

ince 1883, the year of its establishment, Borsalino has held a prime position on the Milanese shopping scene, earning it the name of a ‘Highly historic and traditional store’. This is the highest accolade awarded to historic shops in the Lombardy region. It is just one of a long list of tributes paid to the timehonored history of Italian artisanal tradition that distinguishes Borsalino, whose clientele includes film stars and key figures in the world of art, design and fashion. The Milanese boutique features the brand’s entire creative universe, where lovers of timeless accessories can find felt or straw hats, fabric or waterproof hats and berets, plus men and women’s caps, or scarves in precious materials including velvet and suede. 26 W H E R E M I L A N I JMAAY N UA 2017 R Y 2020

In addition to its most iconic styles, which include Dorsè, Traveller, Art Nouveau, Bucket, Trilby, Alessandria and Marengo, in the small, medium or wide brim versions and in an endless combination of colours and patterns, with contrasting hat bands, there’s also the Bogart collection. This model, a tribute to the actor Humphrey Bogart, is the star of a re-interpretation that has given birth to the new Bogart by Borsalino Cut 3 featuring a high crown, blueberry shaved felt, a medium brim, and a unique two-color band with a jacquard print. This season’s must-have comes in a special hat box dedicated to the Hollywood actor. >> Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, 92 T: 02 89015436. Map F4. www.borsalino.com

Eddy Monetti

NEW OPENING Eddy Monetti’s story began in Naples in 1887 and more than 130 years later it is still a family-run business. In Milan, the brand recently relocated to via San Pietro all’Orto, in the heart of the Quadrilatero della Moda. Spread over three floors, the new boutique has retained the intimate, welcoming atmosphere that distinguishes all the brand’s standalone stores. ENTERTAINMENT

Several venues offering food are included in this section. These are considered as meeting places rather than gourmet addresses and thus explain our decision to list them here rather than under “Dining”. DINING

Reservations for most restaurants are strongly advised. In Italy, service is included in the price meaning that although tipping is not compulsory, it is obviously appreciated as a sign of satisfaction. Some menus include the word “coperto”, a small surcharge corresponding to the cost of the service and bread. Although no dress code exists in Italy, semiformal clothing is usually considered de rigeur at restaurants. All restaurants and bars are non-smoking unless a separate smokers’ area is specifically offered. Set meals: prices are per person and usually refer to a 3-course meal (beverages excluded). € = 30€ or less / €€ = 31-50€ / €€€ = 51-100€ / €€€€ = 101-150€ / €€€€€ = 150€ and above. SIGHTSEEING

Several places like the Duomo, The Last Supper or the Teatro alla Scala are symbols of Milan, hence our decision to list them under a separate category. All details are correct at the time of going to oress but several details can change: ask your concierge to double-check all information.

SHOPPING

DUOMO DISTRICT & MORE Piazza Duomo is also home to the largest Tiffany & Co. boutique in Europe.

Valli Tessuti Alta Moda ●

Milan’s historic centre is contained within a relatively small area which is now mostly closed to traffic, meaning that it’s easy to explore on foot. There’s no need to choose between planning a ‘cultural’ itinerary or a ‘shopping’ itinerary because you can combine the two and get the most out of both. In addition to being packed with several of Milan’s most famous attractions, this area is home to myriad shops, including big-name fashion brands, historic ‘botteghe’ and some of the city’s most sought-after cafés, bars and eateries. In the space of just a few kilometers you’ll find the Duomo, the Galleria, Teatro

alla Scala, the Castle, the ancient Basilica di Sant’Ambrogio, as well as sporadic traces of ‘Roman Milan’, the first settlement and the predecessor of present-day Milan. AROUND THE DUOMO For the ultimate one-stop shopping experience look no further than the Rinascente flagship store (under the arcades): an amazing array of fashion items under just one roof! Just a little further on, the window displays of Rocca 1794 will seduce you with their collections of several of the world’s most desirable jewellery and watch brands.

TOWARDS TEATRO ALLA SCALA: THE GALLERIA Known as the ‘living room’ of Milan, the Galleria links Piazza del Duomo to piazza della Scala. For the past 150 years, it has been a meeting place for the Milanese and their guests. In the Galleria, haute couture takes centre stage. In addition to Prada and Versace, other standouts include Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Armani, Borsalino, Luisa Spagnoli, Bric’s, Tod’s, Stefanel and Massimo Dutti alternated with historic workshops (whose signs serve as an indication of their storied past). A reference point in Milan for the best Made in Italy cuts is Valli Tessuti Alta Moda, with the perfect fabrics to make elegant outfits. You say ‘aperitivo’ and you immediately think of Camparino in Galleria, a landmark location and a reference point where Milan’s elite meet to partake in one of Italy’s oldest social traditions! Carlo Cracco’s new locale is spread over four floors and focuses on opulent aesthetic and culinary offerings, from breakfast to post-theatre dining. For those in search of a taste of tradition, located just nearby is Luini (renowned for its one-of-a-kind “panzerotti”). Conversely, those favouring a more sought-after gourmet experience can either opt to eat at Ristorante Galleria where you enjoy a taste of Milanese food and hospitality (for generations, the Galli family has defined Milanese hospitality in the Galleria!) or at Ristorante Savini, one of Milan’s most iconic landmark restaurants, or at the Marchesi alla Scala restaurant. Don’t miss the Lavazza flagship store, a space where coffee lovers can sample an authentic espresso and innovative coffee-based recipes.

VALLI TESSUTI ALTA MODA A reference point in Milan for the best Made in Italy cuts. Located in via Verdi, just steps from Teatro alla Scala, here expert staff will assist you in the search for the perfect fabric to make elegant outfits, prêt-à-porter or formal wear. These fabrics are inspired by the patterns of the most up-todate haute couture collections. Valli stocks a wide assortment of exquisite fabrics for men (including pinstripes and prince of Wales check by Ermenegildo Zegna and Loro Piana) and women (Valentino and Ungaro), as well as bolts of cloth to make coats and outerwear, shirts, accessories and bridal gowns. ART, SHOPPING AND ENTERTAINMENT To start your sightseeing tour on the right foot, we suggest stopping for a cup of coffee at Princi, not just an ordinary bakery, but a meeting point where, amidst the heady scents of “brioches” and “cappuccino”, you'll have a chance to begin your day on a high note. A reference point for antique lovers, Brera boasts numerous antique shops and art galleries. Among these, Pettinaroli, just relocated from its historic headquarters near the Duomo to no. 4 via Brera, offers a wide selection of maps and antique prints. As an aside, those interested in bargains or bric à brac should definitely make time to visit the Mercatino di antiquariato e brocantage, held on the third Sunday of each month. The array of boutiques continues with the elegant artisan footwear sold by Iliprandi or the tailor-made, Italian-style shoes by Alfonso Garlando. Other points of interest include the elegant womenswear boutique Rosso35, Misani's artisanal jewels for him and for her, the original accessories by Angela Caputi Giuggiù and the unique leather accessories by the new Giòsa Milano boutique in via Ciovasso, 6.

THE PERFUME DISTRICT At no. 4 via Brera, we find the The Merchant of Venice boutique, an historic perfumery epitomizing the art of Venetian perfumemaking offering a luxury line encompassing a wide range of exclusive perfumes for men and women contained in elegant bottles inspired by the tradition of the city’s famous hand-blown Murano glass (www.themerchantofvenice.com). Our next port of call is via Fiori Chiari, where we find the beautiful window displays of Culti Milano. The brand also has a boutique at no. 53 corso Venezia (www.culti.com). Other must-visits while in the area include Olfattorio Bar-à-Parfums (via Brera 5, www.olfattorio.it), Diptyque (via Brera 23, www.diptyqueparis.eu), Profumo (via Brera 6, www.profumomilano.com), the Amouage boutique (via Fiori Chiari 7, www.amouage.com), Dr.Vranjes (via Fiori Chiari 24, http://drvranjes.it), Officina Profumo - Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella (via Madonnina, www.smnovella. com), Creed (via Madonnina 17, creed.cale.it), 9Nine (via Ponte Vetero 22, www.beautysanspa.com) and Fragonard (via Solferino 2, www.fragonard.com). TASTING SUGGESTIONS Between visiting one shop and another, you might be surprised to suddenly discover that it’s time for lunch. Try the typical Parmabased charcuterie specialities at Parma & Co, where you can also enjoy a Sunday brunch or the famed sandwiches sold by Panino Giusto. The afternoon is likely to pass by in a flash until you suddenly realize that it’s aperitivo time: there’s no doubt that you’ll be captivated by the purely Art Déco-style atmosphere of El Tombon de San Marc, the trendier atmosphere of Fashion Café in via San Marco or, for a different taste, the new Culti Milano Hong Kong Crossover restaurant in via Ciovasso offering the sought-after flavours of the Orient; another option is Ristorante Daniel offering contemporary Italian cuisine and the chance to enjoy something new from day to day.

corner of Japan in Milan, where the traditional cuisine of Tokyo embraces contemporary influences, and typical oriental settings espouse the allure of Milan’s new skyline. Iyo Aalto, the new dining destination located on the first floor of Torre Solaria, is this and more. Here, two distinct gastronomic concepts come to life, a Sushi Counter inspired by the Japanese tradition of edomae zushi, and a Gastronomic Restaurant. The former, designed to seat just eight guests in its cozy, exclusive dining room, offers a typical omakase menu that includes ‘nigiri’ infused with seasonal ingredients as well as specialties that are either steamed or coal-grilled on a robatayaki. The dishes, prepared in front of the guests, carry the signature of Master Sushi Makers Masashi Suzuki and 48 W H E R E M I L A N I JMAAY N UA 2017 R Y 2020

Luciano Yamashita, and are accompanied by a selection of wines, sakè and tea curated by sommelier Savio Bina. Alternatively, guests dining at the Gastronomic Restaurant can choose from among three tasting menus – Hitotoki, Yasuragi, Ukiyo – which, thanks to the creative flair of chef Domenico Zizzi, re-interpret traditional techniques and Japanese ingredients, including mentaiko, nagaimo, yuzukosho and wagyu, with a contemporary touch. The menu, a result of research and innovation, takes diners on a trip through the universe of Japanese and Italian flavours, enhanced with international influences. >> Piazza Alvar Aalto, corner of Viale della Liberazione T: 02 25062888. Camparino, the ‘new’ aperitivo The historic Camparino in Galleria has re-opened after a meticulous structural and conceptual restyling, focusing on an innovative concept of cuisine created around Campari cocktails. By Chiara Zaccarelli

hat’s more Milanese than an aperitivo? It was in Camparino in Galleria, a legendary locale, situated in an equally noteworthy location, that the Milanese aperitivo ritual achieved its high point. Established in 1915 in Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II by Davide Campari, it instantly became a big hit with the Milanese. Today, following an in-depth renovation, it has re-opened its doors to the public with a revamped menu and identity. Campari and starred chef Davide Oldani have teamed up to bring customers a new concept of cuisine, designed to be paired with Campari cocktails. At the new Camparino, Oldani suggests a signature creation called Pan’cot, meaning ‘roasted bread’ in Milanese dialect. 54 W H E R E M I L A N I JMAAY N UA 2017 R Y 2020

This simple, traditional yet versatile dish is interpreted in different versions, and serves as a base for delicious combinations of meat, fish, fruit and vegetables. Oldani’s specialty can be sampled in the Sala Spiritello on the first floor. Alternatively, the Bar di Passo on the ground floor is designed to satisfy the requirements of those on a tighter schedule and offers something for all times of the day. Highlights include a selection of dishes signed by Oldani, as well as a bar and café service, beginning with croissants for breakfast. >> www.camparino.com Piazza del Duomo, 21. When Lombardy and Tuscany meet The Basilica di Sant’Eustorgio, the ancient headquarters of Milan’s Domenican Order, hosts the Portinari Chapel, a masterpiece of Lombard Renaissance. By Giulia Minero

T

he Basilica di Sant’Eustorgio was built upon the spot where, according to tradition, the stone sarcophagus containing the remains of the Three Kings, donated to Sant’Eustorgio by Constantine I, was left during its onward journey to the Basilica of Santa Tecla. However, the biggest draw at this large Neo-Romanesque church, which still hosts a part of the remains, is the Portinari Chapel, one of the most important masterpieces of Lombard Renaissance in Milan. The chapel, built between 1462 and 1468 in honour of St. Peter Martyr, was commissioned by the Florentine nobleman Pigello Portinari. It is a surprising example of the interplay between typical Florentine architecture, represented by a small apse and a main 56 W H E R E M I L A N I JMAAY N UA 2017 R Y 2020

square-plan space surmounted by a dome, and Milanese decorative elements. The cycle of frescoes by Vincenzo Foppa, located beneath the multi-coloured sixteen-section dome, interacts with the monumental Carrara marble ark of St. Peter Martyr, comprising a sarcophagus, with eight tiles featuring scenes from the life of the saint, interspersed with eight figures of saints. Eight oculi depict the four Fathers of the Church, Saint Eustorgius, Saint Thomas, Saint Peter and Saint Paul, while the altar shows a portrait of its donor, Pigello Portinari. >> Basilica di Sant’Eustorgio Piazza Sant’Eustorgio, 1. The Shoah Memorial of Milan is located in an area under the railway tracks of the Central Station, where mail was loaded and offloaded. This was the place where, between 1943 and 1945, sheltered from preying eyes, thousands of Jews and political deportees were loaded onto freight cars, via an elevator platform that was used to lift such cars up to the main platform. These transports were then connected to convoys leaving for Auschwitz-Birkenau and other German camps, or Italian camps such as Fossoli and Bolzano. Among all the places used as deportation sites in Europe, the Memorial is the only one that has remained intact. Today it is a commemorative place that honours

the victims of the mass extermination, and also represents a ‘living, educational memorial’ where people can actively experience the tragedy of the Shoah. More than 100,000 visitors, including 60,000 students, have had a chance to experience and gain insight into this place of enormous existential and emotional significance. www.memorialeshoah.it 27 JANUARY HOLOCAUST REMEMBRANCE DAY The Shoah Memorial of Milan pays tribute to the National Holocaust Remembrance Day – on the day of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Nazi camp – with special initiatives that include guided tours to the Memorial.

Shortly after opening its doors to the public, MIC (Italian Film Library Foundation), an absolute must-visit for film buffs, was ranked among the 20 most widely visited museums in Milan. Housed in a former tobacco factory, an industrial site of historic interest, it was recently converted into an interactive cultural hub dedicated to films. The museum offers visitors an innovative experience where they can interact with devices and applications, dub films, create soundtracks, edit footage, improve their knowledge thanks to a vast library, and use dynamic maps to find out which locations in Milan were used to shoot movies and locate cinemas in the city, even those that are no longer operative. But there’s more. The journey continues in the Film Archive, which houses a log of films that are generally inaccessible to the public. These include 25,000 titles, including ‘Rocco and His Brothers’ and ‘Blade Runner’. By wearing a pair of Epson Moverio BT smart glasses and headphones, visitors simply look at the QR codes next to exhibits. This triggers video and audio content in qHD (Quad High Definition). The museum also boasts a rich program of events, exhibitions and screenings. MIC-Museo Interattivo del Cinema Viale Fulvio Testi, 121. T: 02 87242114. www.cinetecamilano.it
