LOCAL FLAVOR

Orlando’s Irish Pub Scene

OPPOSITE PAGE: COURTESY RAGLAN ROAD IRISH PUB AND RESTAURANT; THIS PAGE: COURTESY DAVID SIBILA (2)

Visitors are often surprised to find a robust pub scene in the shadow of swaying palm trees. This is especially true of public houses founded in the Irish tradition: those bastions of great music, dark beer, hearty food and good company. In honor of St. Paddy’s Day, we share some of our favorites. By Brooke Fehr THE HARP & CELT Located in Downtown Orlando, The Harrp & Celt prides itself on being the perfect local hangout for catching this week’s football match up (and yep — we mean soccer.) But that’s not all. With a cozy interior that’s meant to encourage conversation, and not drown it, The Harp & Celt is a great spot for catching up with friends or swapping news with the barkeep over a pint. Look for monthly Traditional Open Irish Sessions, during which local musicians gather to play historic and popular Irish songs. While the menu offers solid classics like Cottage Pie and traditional Irish Breakfast during brunch on the weekends, monthly Curry Nights hold the promise of a variety of authenitic Indian curry dishes, and require advance reservations. 25 S. Magnolia Ave., Orlando; harpandcelt.com LIAM FITZPATRICK’S Lake Mary serves as home to this local watering hole, inspired by the great tradition of Irish pubs. During Wine Down Wednesdays, Liam’s offers an All You Can Drink special

on select wines for $15, which also includes complimentary hors d’oeuvres and live music. Whiskey lovers will prefer $5 specials on a selection ranging from Jack Daniels to Bushmills. 951 Market Promenade Ave., Lake Mary; liamfitzpatricks.com FIDDLER’S GREEN This Winter Park staple has been delighting Central Floridians for nearly 22 years. A stone’s throw from Rollins College, the pub is beloved by students and a regular, older clientele alike — which is just the way owner Donal O’Brien likes it. “People of all ages mix very well together here. We want people to have a feeling of warmth and welcome. We’re all about con versation and inclusiveness.” But there’s more to be had than atmosphere. The pub offers 86 different whiskeys and has 24 beers on tap, including imports and crafts. But it’s the food that often surprises guests, as authentic dishes are made from scratch. Look for live entertainment four nights a week as well. 544 W. Fairbanks Ave., Winter Park; fiddlersgreen.pub

The Harp & Celt, Orlando

Raglan Road Sojourners to the popular Disney Springs are accustomed to seeing immersive venues, but Raglan Road Irish Pub and Restaurant is the real deal, with an interior sourced from pubs and churches across Ireland. But the antiquity stops at the decor. Guests are treated to nightly live music and Irish step dancing with an ever-changing lineup of musical talent representing some of Ireland’s best and brightest. And with a new, state of the art sound and projection system, the entertainment rivals the delicious food as reason enough to spend the evening. Speaking of eats, dig into classics like Shepherd’s Pie and Fish and Chips. Adventurous eaters might prefer the new Gnocchi Sea Gnocchi Do, featuring Georges bank scallops. 9 WAYS TO CELEBRATE #FRESHEPCOT Here’s why we don’t think you should miss a minute of this year’s festival.

Epcot Flower and Garden Festival

Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival The Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2018. This beloved event, taking place Feb. 28 - May 28, has become synonymous with springtime in Orlando, and with good reason: if it grows, you’re likely to see it here. New this year, the festival spans a full 90 days, and hosts a myriad of exhibits, demonstrations, and other events that appeal to young and old alike. It’s truly a feast for all of the senses. Here, we offer up nine reasons that you can’t miss the Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival. By Brooke Fehr 10 W H E R E O R L A N D O I M A R C H / A P R I L 2018

IT’S GORGEOUS Seriously. If ever an entire Disney Park could say that it’s ready for its closeup, it would be Epcot in spring. Millions of brilliant blossoms take center stage, as the Disney horticulture team displays its collective greenthumb front and center.

2

TOPIARIES, TOPIARIES, AND MORE TOPIARIES Disney’s iconic topiaries have been delighting guests for decades. But you’ve never seen anything of this magnitude. From classic characters such as Mickey, Minnie, and the rest of the Fab Five, to fairytale favorites like Belle, Beast and Snow White, chances are that you’ll find your favorite in flower form among the nearly 100 topiaries on display.

3

DELICIOUS FOOD Come for the blooms, but stay for the food! Once again in 2018, guests can eat and drink their way around the World Showcase

Promenade, as 15 Outdoor Kitchens offer chef-inspired bites and refreshing beverages to pair with them. Look for returning favorites like the Warm Berry Buckle -- plus brand new dishes that will debut as well. Keep track of your progress with your free Festival Passport, available throughout the park.

Visit The Goodness Garden Butterfly House to view a myriad of butterfly species who are right at home amid the blooms. Learn about their life cycle, and if you’re lucky, you may even catch a butterfly emerge from its chrysalis.

SPIKE’S POLLEN NATION EXPLORATION During the festival, kids of all ages are invited to participate in a springtime scavenger hunt with Spike, “the bzzzz-iest honey bee at Walt Disney World.” Maps are available for $5.99 at locations throughout the park. Don’t Miss Tiffany at the Morse Museum WINTER PARK, Fla. — Of the many unexpected pleasures awaiting visitors to Central Florida, none may be as dazzling as a stroll through the galleries of The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art, home to the world’s most comprehensive collection of works by American artist and designer Louis Comfort Tiffany. The Tiffany collection at the Morse includes the designer’s jewelry, pottery, paintings, and art glass, as well as his famed leadedglass lamps and windows. Highlights include the restored ByzantineRomanesque chapel interior that Tiffany designed for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago and art and architectural objects from his celebrated Long Island estate, Laurelton Hall. The Morse, which celebrates its 75th anniversary this season, was founded by Jeannette Genius McKean (1909–89) in 1942 and named for her industrialist grandfather. She and her husband, Hugh F. McKean (1908–95), the Museum’s director until his death, built the collection over a 50-year period. In 1957, when a fire ravaged Tiffany’s Laurelton Hall, the McKeans salvaged all they could from the ruins for the Morse. In the Museum’s galleries, visitors will also find exhibits of American art pottery, Art Nouveau objects, and late 19th-and early 20th-century American paintings. [WHERE INSIDE]

Orlando Your Way

‘Tweens

Hipster

Music Lovers

Spend the day at (1) Universal Studios, which offers thrill-seekers some of the most adrenaline-pumping rides in town along with the Wizarding World of Harry Potter: Diagon Alley. Then head to the I-Drive 360. While you’re having a nice dinner at Tapa Toro, your tweens can grab something from Shake Shack before visiting (3) Madame Tussauds wax attraction for the ultimate selfie with Ryan Gosling or One Direction. Afterward, meet up at (2) Sugar Factory. You’ll make a big impression when you order the $99 King Kong Sundae for the table, which comes with 24 scoops of ice cream and sparklers. Take your sugar high up 400 feet on the Orlando Eye, an observation wheel that looks out over the city and the fireworks lighting up the night sky.

Go off the beaten path to up-and-coming cultural havens where the beer and cocktails are craft, the food is farm-to-table and the entertainment is local. Find the quaint, Europeaninspired shopping and dining district of (1) Thornton Park just east of downtown where townies dine alfresco along brick-lined streets. (2) Audubon Park , tucked around a retro residential neighborhood known for its gardens and wild peacocks, is home to award-winning, locavore restaurants, eclectic boutiques and live-music venues. (3) The Milk District , aptly named for the T.G. Lee Milk national headquarters smack-dab in its center, is a dining, shopping and nightlife district dating back to the ‘50s. At "Tasty Tuesday" food-truck bazaar, dig into chicken and waffles, Korean barbecue tacos and Maine lobster rolls.
