The Essential Orlando Welcome to our Dining Issue! Fall is the most delicious time of the year in Orlando, and we’re shining a light on some of our favorite bites and sips. Look for a special emphasis on great spots to dine throughout our entire issue, but pay particular attention to Orlando’s Best-Kept Dining Secrets (p. 8). Autumn is also a great time to take in one of the fun events happening around town. Check out a few of our favorites in Fall-tastic Festivals (p. 6). Finally, from light to fright, there’s a Halloween adventure waiting for everyone this time of year in O-Town (p. 10).

ICON Orlando 360

If you’ve just arrived in town and have a few hours to kill before check-in, then ICON Orlando 360 is an ideal introduction to the tourism corridor. This outdoor entertainment complex, located on popular International Drive, is home to several attractions as well as a handful of notable restaurants and watering holes. The adjacent parking garage, located off of International Drive, offers easy access and is free. Start your visit with a spin on ICON Orlando, a 400-foot-tall observation wheel that’s the little sister of the London Eye. The 20-minute, relaxing flight offers stunning 360-degree views of the city. Afterward, soak in a little science at SeaLife Aquarium, home to a 360-degree ocean tunnel and 5,000 sea creatures. Or visit Skeletons, a museum of osteology which

Fall-tastic Festivals The mercury may not be dipping too far yet, but there are other signs that fall is approaching. That subtle change in light, and days that are a bit shorter. That cool breeze in the morning and evening that refreshes. Seasonal signs are all around us in the shape of bright orange orbs ready for the plucking (even if you are designing your jack-o-lantern between dips in the pool.) Nothing says fall quite like working your way through a corn maze, picking out the perfect pumpkin for an afternoon carving session or sipping on a glass of wine fresh from the source. In Central Florida, seasonal festivals offer all of this and more amid warm autumn temperatures and bright sunshine. BY STEPHANIE PATTERSON LAKERIDGE WINE AND CHEESE FESTIVAL: SEPTEMBER 8-9 At the First Annual Wine and Cheese Festival, sip Florida wines made from native muscadine grapes while listening to live music indoors and out, playing games on the lawn and sampling your way through six to eight complimentary tasting stations. Nibble on cheese samples along the way paired with Lakeridge’s signature wines. LONG & SCOTT FARMS CORN MAZE: OCTOBER 2

Weave through an intricately designed seven-acre corn maze at Long & Scott Farms, a working farm 35 minutes northwest of Orlando. Activities include two corn mazes, a permanent tree maze and rope maze, a 60-foot super slide, a large fort-style playground, hayrides on the Sweet Corn Express and more. The star remains the large maze, with past designs including the State of Liberty and the Fresh From Florida emblem. Pack a family picnic to enjoy after you’ve worked up an appetite in the maze.

SANFORD OKTOBERFEST: OCTOBER 11-14 Revered as Central Florida’s most authentic Oktoberfest celebration, Sanford’s legendary Oktoberfest will transport you straight to Munich. Don traditional dirndls and lederhosen from Hollerbach’s Outfitters before heading to Hollerbach’s Willow Tree Café and Magnolia Square Market, a German deli and the central hub of activity. Sip a Das Boot—a glass boot filled with German beer—as you enjoy live entertainment and German fare. Prost!

Theme parks gleefully celebrate the season, from happily haunted happenings to twisted, after-hours events that offer a serious case of the heebie jeebies. By David Sibila

Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party at Walt Disney World takes place on select nights from August 17 through October 31, making it one of Central Florida’s longestrunning Halloween celebrations. Loved by visitors and locals alike, the special, after-hours ticketed event allows guests access to the beautifully-decorated park during the bewitching hour. Go trick-ortreating throughout Magic Kingdom Park, meet Disney characters dressed in their Halloween best (don’t miss Pooh and Friends!), and watch the “Mickey’s Boo-To-You Halloween Parade,” led by the infamous Headless Horseman.

Don’t Miss Tiffany at the Morse Museum WINTER PARK, Fla. — Of the many unexpected pleasures awaiting visitors to Central Florida, none may be as dazzling as a stroll through the galleries of The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art, home to the world’s most comprehensive collection of works by American artist and designer Louis Comfort Tiffany. The Tiffany collection at the Morse includes the designer’s jewelry, pottery, paintings and art glass, as well as his famed leaded-glass lamps and windows. Highlights include the restored ByzantineRomanesque chapel interior that Tiffany designed for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago and art and architectural objects from his celebrated Long Island estate, Laurelton Hall. The Morse was founded by Jeannette Genius McKean (1909–89) in 1942 and named for her industrialist grandfather. She and her husband, Hugh F. McKean (1908–95), the Museum’s director until his death, built the collection over a 50-year period. In 1957, when a fire ravaged Tiffany’s Laurelton Hall, the McKeans salvaged all that they could from the ruins for the Morse. In the Museum’s galleries, visitors will also find exhibits of American art pottery, Art Nouveau furnishings and objects, and late 19th- and early 20th-century American paintings. [WHERE INSIDE]

Orlando Your Way

Oenophile In 2015, Wine Enthusiast ranked Orlando as one of the top ten destinations for wine in the world. Three years on, the city’s wine scene is as strong as ever. New to Orlando is (1) Wine Bar George, located at Disney Springs. This relaxed wine bar offers wines by the ounce, glass or bottle to allow for maximum flexibility in wine discovery. An Orlando secret is (2) Tim’s Wine Market, which disregards accolades and critic scores in favor of letting each of their personally selected wines stand out for their individual strengths. Finally, the (3) Food and Wine Classic returns to the Disney Swan and Dolphin Resort on October 26th and 27th. This is a true homegrown street party, complete with wine, food and live music on the Swan and Dolphin promenade patio. 40 W H E R E O R L A N D O I S E P T E M B E R / O C TO B E R 2 018

Sweet Tooth

Health Nut

A vacation to Orlando is the ultimate treat— over-the-top restaurants and artisan shops offer decadent, Instagram-worthy desserts. Take an afternoon trip to the quaint downtown of Sanford, where you’ll find (1) Wondermade marshmallow shop. Perfect souvenirs, Wondermade gourmet marshmallows and hot chocolates come in a variety of flavors like pumpkin pie, bourbon and s’mores. Another Florida favorite is (2) Peterbrooke Chocolatier on Winter Park’s popular Park Avenue. Watch as delicious candies and chocolate-covered popcorn are made before your eyes. Down at CityWalk, creative minds at Universal Orlando Resort have unveiled (3) Toothsome Chocolate Emporium, a real-life version of Willie Wonka’s Chocolate Factory with outlandish milkshakes and other desserts.

Eating healthy and staying active on vacation is easy in Orlando. SeaWorld, Universal and Disney can accommodate anyone with food allergies, and guests can forego French fries for healthful choices like grapes, apples and carrot sticks. 1) Erin McKenna Bakery NYC at Disney Springs serves an all-vegan and gluten-free menu of her award-winning doughnuts, cookies, bagels and cupcakes. Visitors can get active away from the theme parks by renting a kayak or canoe at Wekiva Island or 3) Shingle Creek Paddling Center or pick fresh grapefruit and oranges at Showcase of Citrus. For a healthy meal, head downtown to Winter Park and visit 2) Create Your Nature for a bowl, or Ethos Vegan Kitchen where sandwiches, salads, bowls and breakfast items are all vegan or vegetarian.
