Downtown is typically a place where you find a bundle of options to enjoy and Downtown Scottsdale is no exception, with everything you need within walking distance of each other.

OdySea Aquarium is the only place you can come face-to-face with a shark in the bathroom, walk underwater, and step aboard Voyager, the world’s only rotating aquarium exhibit. Arizona’s largest aquarium is filled with interactive exhibits as well as penguins, sea turtles, otters and more. COURTESY ODYSEA AQUARIUM

LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN TRAVELERS KNOW WHERE ™

W

elcome to the fi rst issue of WhereTraveler magazine, which has been in the making for 83 years. Where magazine, our flagship publication, has been the traveler’s friend since it was first published in 1936. It’s been a great ride but, as with any voyage, one can’t stay in the same place. With the April 2019 issue, we embark on an exciting new adventure as Where takes on a new look and a new name. Like its predecessor, WhereTraveler magazine continues our tradition of offering the best insider information about the local market but with a dynamic new design that speaks to today’s traveler. Even the most experienced traveler knows that having a local friend with inside knowledge of a destination makes a trip all the more special, someone who not only knows the essential, not-tobe-missed sights but also the city’s hidden treasures. For millions of travelers each year, that friend is WhereTraveler magazine, providing valuable advice through print and digital products that cover more than 100 cities, making WhereTraveler the world’s premier travel brand. The new look is sleek and modern, as represented by the new logo, and the compact size makes the magazine conveniently portable. Inside is the same great content we have always provided but in a more concise model, packed with useful information in a fun and visually dramatic format. We show you the best places to shop and dine, the landmarks and attractions not to be missed. We guide you to experiences that will help you make the most of your visit. Our redesigned

Guide section now includes up to 50 percent more listings. Once you have explored the city you are in, WhereTraveler will help you prepare for your next trip. See our new Where Next page, featuring photos from markets around the nation where you will also find WhereTraveler magazine. Then visit our website, wheretraveler. com, which offers travel information on 100 destinations around the world. I hope you enjoy this debut issue of WhereTraveler magazine and that you will look for it at your next destination.

Our climate is what has cemented this area as a top destination.

JAMES CORDOVA CONCIERGE, HYATT REGENCY PHOENIX

Q: WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOU THINK MAKES PHOENIX UNIQUE? A: Our city is unique

because it is so big and yet still so young. Phoenix wasn’t incorporated until 1881. 138 years later we are the fifth largest city in the United States! With respect to the rest of the “Five Cs” our climate is what has cemented this area as a top destination. Q: DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE NEIGHBORHOOD TO VISIT OR AREA TO HANG OUT AT HERE? A: I live in Mid-Town and

work Downtown. There is so much variety between the 7s (7th Street and 7th Avenue). We have all of the galleries on Roosevelt Row and Grand Avenue. Seventh Street has exploded as a hotbed of restaurants and entertainment. Not to mention sports and performing arts venues downtown. Q: IS THERE A GO-TO PLACE OR PLACES YOU LIKE TO VISIT FOR HAPPY HOUR? A: I am not a drinker but

I have spent some time at The Womack on 7th Street. They play nothing

put ’70s funk and disco. Classic! Q: ANY PLACE OUT IN NATURE YOU PARTICULARLY ENJOY NEAR PHOENIX? A: I love South Mountain

Park and I hike the Kiwanis Trail once a week. During the spring bloom the parts of the mountain look yellow due to all of the wild flowers.

more than 50 years old, I love Big Surf ! I might be well into adulthood but I still visit Big Surf. When I hear those waves crashing and smell that coconut scented suntan lotion I am a kid again! Q: IF YOU COULD TRAVEL TO ANY OTHER CITY IN THE WORLD, WHAT WOULD IT BE? A: I have always wanted

to visit Sydney, Australia. They have beautiful beaches, it is on the other side of the globe. I love the idea of traveling that far and not having to worry about a language barrier.

While national name brand locations can be wonderful, why not soak up the flavor of the local entrepreneurship during your time in the Valley of the Sun? From milk to coffee to T-shirts to candy, locally-owned stores—and locally-made products—are found in abundance in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area. Here are a handful of our favorites. MADE ART BOUTIQUE

In 2005, Cindy Dach and Greg Esser opened MADE art boutique in Phoenix, because as Cindy explains, she wanted to share the artist as a crafter experience with the community, and to offer functional, handmade artwork at a lower price point in order to expand the scope and

opportunity of artists’ work in Arizona. Today, the retail and community space hosts events and offers an ever-changing inventory of one-of-a-kind items, including jewelry, pottery, desert-themed paintings, shirts and gifts made by a variety of artists. 5345 W. DANZEISEN DAIRY

Jim Cerreta, Sr. learned the art of candy production from his father-inlaw’s company in Canton, Ohio, and then moved to Arizona and his launched his own company in 1968. Today, Jim still runs the company, along with his sons, daughter and grandson. The candy factory—which offers free tours— turns out barks, brittles and toffee; fudge; chocolate bars; nuts and more—including the wildly popular French Mint.

Michael Spangenberg, Stephen Polando and Nicholas Polando loved Arizona so much they wanted to give people a way to express their pride for the state. Their company offers various clothing items, as well as hats, decals and wallets, all with the State Forty Eight logo. In addition to its own retail location, items are available at various stores around the state, as well as at the D-Backs and Phoenix Suns Team Shop.

Located just 10 miles from downtown Phoenix, Danzeisen Dairy is a family-run dairy farm that has been in the family for more than 55 years. Launched by Neil and Gertrude Viss, it is now owned by Kevin Danzeisen, their grandson. Products range from regular milk to chocolate, strawberry, root beer milk and more, as well as juice products. And, the dairy farm offers tours and butter-making classes.
