VIOLINS OF HOPE: FEB. 3-MARCH 26 Israeli violinmaker Amnon Weinstein has devoted the last 20 years to locating and restoring the violins of the Holocaust as a tribute to those who were lost, including 400 of his own relatives. Dreaming of Date Night
There’s so much to see and do around town. Like to hike? Pick a trail! Ready for a romantic meal? There are lots of worthy restaurants. But there are also plenty of other wow ideas for date night fun. If you’re ready to get creative, try Pinspiration, where you can choose from a variety of projects to craft, from signs to acrylic art to dreamcatchers to wall-mounted beer openers. There’s even a splatter room (pictured above). The locale also offers wines, brews and some snacks. www.pinspiration.com
COOKING CLASS FUN At Marcellino Ristorante, helmed by award-winning Chef/Owner Marcellino, enjoy a Lunch & Learn cooking class on February 16 (www.marcellino ristorante.com). Find other cooking classes at Valley Sur La Table locations (www.surlatable.com), and Sweet Basil (www.sweet basilgourmet.com). GET OUTDOORS Connect with nature at Desert Botanical Garden, which boasts 4,379 species in its Living Collection. Stroll through the paths and admire the unique plants, flowers and cacti, and finish the trip with lunch at Gertrude’s (www.dbg.org). At the Japanese Friendship Garden of Phoenix, explore an authentic 3.5-acre Japanese Stroll Garden, complete with a tea garden and tea house. While the garden is open Tuesday through Sunday, tea ceremonies are held only the third Saturday of each month (www.japanese friendshipgarden.org).
SOLVE A PUZZLE Can you and your other half work together to solve enough clues in under an hour to “escape the room?” The Valley boasts a number of places where you can try. These “escape rooms” are all themed, and allow guests 60 minutes to find and solve all the clues in a room to reach the end of the game. Try Escape the Room AZ (www.escapetheroom. com), Phoenix Escape Room (www.phoenixescaperooms.com), Lockdown Escape Rooms (www. lockdownrooms.com), and Gilbert Escape Room (www.gilbertescape room.com), amongst others. GO TO NEW HEIGHTS Take your relationship to new heights—literally—when you float over the desert in a hot air balloon. An excursion with Hot Air Expeditions (www.hotairexpeditions.com) includes gourmet cuisine postflight, while a trip with Rainbow Ryders (www.rainbowryders.com) offers mimosas and other food or drink, depending on the experience booked.

Mid-Century Marvels From hotels to homes to restaurants housed in old bank locations, the Valley offers amazing examples of midcentury modern architecture. Of course, there’s Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West. But there are other major destinations around the area too, both by Wright and other notable Valley architects. One of the most iconic destinations is Hotel Valley Ho in Old Town Scottsdale, which recently launched an Insider MidCentury Tour of Scottsdale. Tour the hotel, as well as several destinations around the Valley. Tours are by appointment and must be booked in advance. To book, call 480.376.2600.
HOTEL VALLEY HO Considered one of the best-preserved mid-century modern hotels in the country, the Hotel Valley Ho has a gloried past. Designed by architect Edward L. Varney and opened in 1956, the destination was a true Hollywood hideaway. Today, the hotel has been restored to its mid-century splendor and continues to draw guests from around the world. www.hotel valleyho.com HAROLD C. PRICE HOUSE This is the largest home architect Frank Lloyd Wright built in Arizona. It was built in 1955 for Harold and MaryLou Price as a winter home, where the couple could entertain their grandchildren. It boasts a pool, large courtyard, and stunning views. www.pricehouse foundation.org

POSTINO HIGHLAND This popular Scottsdale restaurant, which is known for its bruschetta and paninis, is housed in a midcentury building that previously housed a bank. The locale was designed by Drover, Welch and Lindlan architect Frank Henry, who apprenticed under Wright. www. postinowinecafe.com OTHER NOTABLE LOCALES While the tour takes guests inside locales, some destinations are showcased during the driving portion, including the Triangle Building by architect Ralph Haver (1962); Frank Henry’s dendriform-column bank (1968); the Christian Science First Church by T.S. Montgomery (1962); Villa Monterey by Dave Friedman (1961-1967); and Wright’s last residential project, the Lykes House (1959).

[WHERE INSIDE]
Valley of the Sun
How did you break into being on television? I started out as a newspaper writer and then attempted stand-up comedy for about five minutes. I was terrible, but a writer I knew saw me at an open mic night and recommended me for a job at Comedy Central. I’ve been working in television ever since.
Teresa Strasser
[TV Host, Author, Radio and Podcast Host] She's an Emmy Award-winning writer ("Win Ben Stein's Money"), an Emmy Award-nominated TV host ("While You Were Out"), was the co-host on “The Adam Carolla Show,” published a book, and hosts the syndicated TV entertainment show "The List." Is there anything Phoenix resident Teresa Strasser can't do? You’re currently on “The List.” What do you love about the show? It’s not too serious. I’ve recently covered such topics as How to Dress According to Your Facial Hair—so, obviously, there’s no concern
about getting scooped by “Meet the Press.” This show isn’t tackling social issues or dripping in any gravitas, it’s just a quick bite of light entertainment to catch you up on pop culture, life hacks and trends.

Any favorite story from it you can share? One of my favorite stories was How to Celebrate Valentine’s Day at the 99 Cents Only Store— again, not something Christiane Amanpour is going to cover, but
You’re both an Emmy Award-winning writer (“Win Ben Stein’s Money”) and an Emmy Award-nominated television host (“While You Were Out”). Which do you prefer most—writing or being on-camera? I get asked this frequently and you would think I’d have a snappier, wittier or more insightful answer. The truth is, in any endeavor, the joyfulness quotient is often a direct result of the collaboration, how talented is my director, producer, co-host or editor? If I’m on a team, even just a team of writer/editor, but I feel supported and nurtured and pushed, I’m happy.
I love when I’m the dumbest and least funny person in the room. You’re also a published author (and so much more too)! Can you tell us about your book? It’s a pregnancy memoir called “Exploiting My Baby” that I wrote for Penguin, which was also optioned by ABC to become a sitcom called “Mother Teresa.” That never happened, but writing it was the best experiences of my professional life. I think ABC ended up producing a show that season about a veterinary office with talking animals, so there’s no business like show business, and being a writer will break your heart. But there’s nothing better. Any favorite locations in Metro Phoenix? Because I still work on camera, I have a deep, abiding and special love for skin care. I know that sounds crazy, but having struggled with terrible skin my entire life, I really appreciate having (mostly) clear skin now thanks to Jamie Comstock at MD Skincare Lounge. We also love World of Baseball for the batting cages (yep, I’m a Little League Mom), Dick’s Sporting Goods, Arcadia Park, and the Microsoft Store at Scottsdale Fashion Square. My kids love going there. Changing Hands is an amazing bookstore, and AZ Pops makes the coolest summer treat in town. Discover more at

that’s why I loved it. I’ve always been obsessed with dollar stores and the random wonder of what you might find there, so the notion of getting everything romantic— from your nightie to your pregnancy test—at a dollar store was just rich territory. And Manuel Beccera, the manager of the store, was priceless in the segment. The piece was even nominated for a local Emmy, but we lost. I cried into my 99-cent tissues.
