Exploring Northern Arizona
Beat the heat with a road trip north. As you head up in elevation, the temps begin to drop. Exploring Northern Arizona is easy—see it via a train, hot air balloon, jeep or hike. The Grand Canyon Railway has been enchanting visitors since 1901. Today, ride one of the restored cars while watching the beautiful scenery roll by. Crew are on-hand to share folklore and tales of days gone by, and authentic characters and musicians bring the Old West to life. The train runs from Williams (just north of Flagstaff) to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, with time to explore before a return trip. www.thetrain.com
JEEP TOURS Book a tour on a famous pink jeep with Pink Adventure Tours and explore routes in both Sedona and the Grand Canyon. View unique scenery while a tour guide shares information about the flora, fauna and history of the area. In Sedona, options include an archaeological experience that includes a visit to 700-year-old cliff dwellings and views of pictographs and petroglyphs, while a Grand Canyon experience includes the scenic ride and a hike on the Trail of Time, as well as a visit to the Yavapai Geology Museum. www.pinkadventuretours.com
HIKING Northern Arizona is filled with hikes offering stunning scenery. In Sedona, climb Bell Rock for breathtaking views of the surrounding red rocks. The easy hike around the base is approximately .75 miles long. Experienced climbers tackle the strenuous climb to the apex of one of the spires. The moderately difficult hike at Devil’s Bridge takes hikers to the largest natural stone arch in Sedona. Those venturing to the Grand Canyon explore Bright Angel Trail or one of the Kaibabs. Grandview Trail, which connects with Tonto Trail, is also popular. UNIQUE SPOTS IN NORTHERN ARIZONA Havasupai Falls, located in the Grand Canyon, requires an extensive hike to reach. Horseshoe Bend, a U-shaped rock where the Colorado River turns around, is just 20 minutes from Antelope Canyon. Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff is among the oldest observatories in the U.S.—and where Pluto was discovered.
