The Essential Phoenix +Scottsdale There is so much happening in the Valley of the Sun this month! Check out the many new and unique exhibits here (page 22). Ready to get in the holiday mood? On page 25 we showcase holiday-inspired local products. Enjoy! 90 MINUTES IN:
Downtown Scottsdale With November’s cooler weather and the approaching holidays, it’s the perfect time to head to Downtown Scottsdale—there’s something for everyone to see and do. Enjoy remainders of the Wild West; wander through the Arts District’s many art galleries; stop in one of the many restaurants, which range from casual to fine dining; shop ’til you drop at Scottsdale Fashion Square; and of course, make sure to stop by the Scottsdale Waterfront, a mixed-use area of shops, restaurants and residential living. This month the area bustles with Canal Convergence’s large-scale art installations along the canal. Towards the end of the month, Downtown dazzles with the kick-off of Scottsdazzle, a holiday extravaganza that takes over the area and offers a myriad of things to do and see. Get going! “One-Eyed Jack”
“The Electric Guitar: Inventing an American Icon” The electric guitar plays an important part in history. At this exhibit at Musical Instrument Museum, explore the story of its invention, and learn how it revolutionized music and popular culture. On display are more than 80 of the rarest electric guitars and amplifiers in the world, from some of the first ever heard to those played by the most famous electric guitarits known today. View everything from Alvino Rey’s 1932 Electro A-25, likely the first electric guitar ever played on a national radio broadcast, to electric guitars played by Ron Wood and Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones. Additionally, view footage of interviews with celebrities such as Grammy Award-winning jazz guitarist George Benson, guitar historians and collectors, and guitar demonstrations. Nov. 9-Sept. 15, 2019. 4725 E. Mayo Blvd.; 480.478.6000. www.mim.org
You may have heard all about the Valley’s critters and creatures, from the dreaded scorpions and rattlesnakes to coyotes and javelinas, and yes, wild horses. One animal that’s easy to spot is “One-Eyed Jack,” the 26-foothigh, 20,000 lb. jackrabbit sculpture that just took up residence at the corner of Marshall Way and Indian School Road in Scottsdale. The whitepainted steel sculpture was commissioned by Scottsdale Public Art, and created by Tempe-based artist John Randall Nelson. The design mixes the Southwest appeal of an iconic desert animal with the modern aesthetic of nearby contemporary art galleries, and the sculpture references both the desert agrarian roots of the Scottsdale area and the modern hustle and bustle of the arts and shopping district.
“YUA: HENRI MATISSE AND THE INNER ARCTIC SPIRIT” For the first and only time, explore the artistic and spiritual connection between the great 20th century French modern master, Henri Matisse, and the Indigenous people of the Arctic. Matisse’s striking black-and-white portraits of Inuit people are largely unknown, and vastly different than the colorful works he is typically known for. These were inspired, in part, by a group of Yup’ik (Native Alaskan) masks collected by his son-in-law, Georges Duthuit. In addition to works by Matisse, the exhibition will also feature Yup’ik masks, cultural objects, archival photographs, film and ephemera. Through Feb. 3, 2019. 2301 N. Central Ave.; 602.252.8840. www.heard.org 23

[WHERE INSIDE]
Valley of the Sun –Dry is one of my favorite ciders on the board. While it is completely dry, meaning it has zero sugar, it retains a smooth apple flavor without the acidity you typically find in dry ciders. You offer a veteran discount, correct? Cider Corps offers $1 off pints for veterans. You are located in an interesting building… Cider Corps is located in Historical Downtown Mesa. It is located in a building that was built in the early 1900s, and it used to be the stables for the Mesa mounted police.

Marine Sgt. Jason Duren deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom 12.2 from May 6, 2012 to February 8, 2013. In 2014, he medically retired from the Marine Corps due to wounds sustained in combat. Today he lives in Gilbert with his wife, Melissa, and their two children, and co-owns Cider Corps, a cidery and taproom, with his brother, Josh. Duren was awarded a Purple Heart, Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and a Combat Action Ribbon. How did you get into the cider business? Cider Corps is a veteranowned and -operated company built by myself and my brother, Josh. Cider Corps’ beginnings were not typical, but have shaped the vision and mission of what it is today. While deployed in Afghanistan, I suffered two traumatic brain injuries from multiple IED blasts. Upon returning home, I faced a long road towards medical retirement and an unknown future. During the retirement process, we began experimenting with cider-making as a
hobby and therapeutic outlet. Out of this hobby has come a unique technique for cidermaking, and over the past 3 ½ years, this technique has earned Cider Corps outstanding reviews from significant people within the beverage and culinary industry. With these reviews, we were encouraged to move this hobby into a business. For the two years after deployment, I struggled through the medical retirement process. Through hundreds of appointments, frustration with care and struggling to move forward, it

became apparent that disabled veterans needed more support. All of these experiences became the crux that propelled Cider Corps into blending the love of crafting cider with the desire to serve and give back to fellow veterans. Today, it’s defined in our mission: Drink Great Cider. Honor Great Sacrifice. Why the name Cider Corps? Corps means a body of people engaged in a particular activity. This is one of the greatest things about the Marine
Corps—while there are many occupations within the corps, we all work as one well-oiled machine to accomplish the mission. Cider Corps is a catalyst to bring people together for the sake of bringing awareness to veterans and to veterans’ hardships, as well as their successes. How long does it take to make a cider? Our process takes about a month from start to finish. Do you have any favorite ciders? Currently, Semper Vera
Do you have any favorite places around the Valley? My favorite craft venues to frequent are: Crêpe Bar and Copper & Cotton. Any advice to those trying cider who aren’t familiar with it? While cider is one of the oldest drinks in America, it is still relatively new to the craft scene. Approach it like you would beer. There are many different styles and techniques used in the making of hard cider. Cidery & Taproom: 31 S. Robson Drive, Mesa. www.cidercorpsaz.com
