MICHELLE CALDWELL CHEF CONCIERGE, THE PHOENICIAN
Q: WHAT STOPS SHOULD BE ON EVERY VISITOR’S “BUCKET LIST” WHEN VISITING? A: For food, savor the
flavors of the remarkably decadent 13-course Journey Tasting Menu at Kai, the only Five Diamond/ Five Star restaurant in Arizona. For fun, enjoy the magic of an Arizona sunrise with a private hot air balloon ride. For education, the Heard Museum is home to more than 40,000 items and features one of the largest evolving collections of Native American art and artifacts. EXPERT TIP
The Musical Instrument Museum’s blended audio and video concept creates a multi-faceted, interactive experience.
Preserve tells the story of an ancient civilization through over 1,500 petroglyphs. The archeological site is one of five prehistoric sites found in the local area. Q: WHAT IS YOUR BEST TIP FOR VISITING THE CITY LIKE A LOCAL, WHETHER IT’S FOR FIRST-TIMERS OR LONG-TIME VISITORS? A: Locals work in the city
and play in the desert! Guests should definitely get out of the city and explore our amazing desert with an ATV, hummer or tomcar tour. Q: WHAT ARE SOME GOOD SPOTS TO CAPTURE A GREAT SELFIE? A: Take your Arizona
selfie with the iconic Scottsdale Cowboy on Main Street in Downtown Scottsdale or climb high for your 1,200-foot mountaintop selfie at the top of Camelback Mountain.

Where Now
Fashion Forward
The fashion industry in the Valley of the Sun is booming. Designers launch and brand clothing lines, fashion shows are a regular occurrence, and though flip flops are a closet staple for locals, so are the latest fashions. This fall, purple reigns as a hue, and clothes with cinched waists are in. Asymmetrical necklines will be popular, as will long coats. Quilted patterns are in, and yes, the power shoulder (shoulder pads) are making a comeback, too! MICHELLE GLICKSMAN
JOY LI
“We’re getting a lot of requests for both pink and monochromatic fully-tailored suits, but not far behind are inquiries about sleek-lined, classic black suits. Velvet in all colors has also been super hot for us going into fall.” – Jay and Jessica McPhaul, co-owners of Heywood & Ringo HEYWOOD & RINGO
DESIGNERS TO KNOW Other local designers include Angela Johnson of Angela Johnson Designs, who incorporates recycled T-shirts into her designs and is known for her famous T-shirt ballgowns (www.angelajohnsondesigns.com). Also known in women’s fashion—she’s been lauded in everything from local publications to “Vogue”—Joy Li offers “sophistical, casual lifestyle looks with a modern edge” (www.joyli.net). Men have options from JC Donaldson of Being Dapper, who creates “dashing apparel for the modern man” that range from T-shirts to blazers (www.beingdapper.com). Offering choices for everyone, MaryElizabeth Stewart creates rock ’n roll-inspired looks for men and women through her line, Rockin Street Wear (www.rockinstreetwear.com). Jay and Jessica McPhaul, co-owners of Heywood & Ringo, are a Phoenix based husband-and-wife team that crafts custom and made-to-measure suits for everyone from executives to bridal parties (www.heywoodandringo.com).

WHERE TO SHOP While most local designers offer their creations via a website or by appointment at a studio, there are still many brick-and-mortar places around the Valley to shop till you drop. Major fashion destinations include Scottsdale Fashion Square, which is not only Arizona’s largest mall, but one of the largest in the country (www.fashion square.com), Scottsdale Quarter (www.scottsdalequarter.com), Chandler Fashion Center (www.shopchandlerfashioncenter.com) and Desert Ridge Marketplace (www.shopdesertridge.com). Those who enjoy shopping smaller boutiques head to Bunky Boutique (www.bunkyboutique.com) in Downtown Phoenix for its unique selection of women’s, men’s and baby items. In Uptown Phoenix, Kiss Me Kate (@kissmekateaz on Facebook) is a popular destination, with hip fashions for women and many one-of-a-kind items. Those in North Scottsdale, head to Diva Divine for a selection of women’s designer apparel and accessories (www.divadivineboutique.com) and Heidi Boutique, for trendy styles for women from both local and national designers (@heidiboutique on Instagram).
