f you want to experience San Francisco’s vibrant hospitality and incredible display of creativity, then December is the month to visit. The city is ablaze with colorful holiday lights, lush Christmas trees, fl ickering menorahs, and festive decorations. It is the one time of year that San Francisco looks even more magical at night than during the day. While you’re in the city, make sure to take advantage of the festivities, including ice-skating at the many ice rinks around town, take in a holiday light tour and visit the cable car museum for a glimpse of the past. If you get a chance to head out of San Francisco, make sure to read Jessie Fetterling’s article about the many quaint towns around the Bay and their holiday traditions on page 14. One of my favorites is Napa Valley Wine Train’s Santa Train—the best of both worlds for the kiddos and the grown-ups! Union Square has so much going on, and you can read all about it in Laurie Jo Miller Farr’s write up on page 12. Our esteemed concierge Mariah Zuefle from the St. Regis fi lls us in on her favorite holiday traditions, places to visits and unique San Francisco gifts. Make sure to tag your photos with #wheretraveler for your chance to be published nationally. I’m sure you’re going to have a fabulous time, we are so delighted you came to visit. Happy Holiday!

Q: WHERE CAN VISITORS GO FOR FUN WINTER ACTIVITIES? A: Visit the ice-skating

rink at Justin Herman Plaza, overlooking the Ferry Building, or the ice-skating rink at Union Square. I also recom-

mend guests attend the Christmas tree lighting at Union Square and Pier 39 and Hanukkah Menorah lighting at Union Square. For a real San Francisco experience, don’t miss Drag Queens on Ice, located at Union Square, on Dec. 5. Q: WHAT IS A PERFECT GIFT TO TAKE HOME FROM SAN FRANCISCO? A: A keepsake from

San Francisco to take home would be a cable car ornament for your Christmas tree from the Cable Car Museum. The museum store also offers books, clothing and collectibles. Admission to the museum is free, offering visitors the rich history of the cable cars.

Quaint Town Holiday Traditions The holiday season is officially upon us, and there’s no better way to celebrate the festivities than venturing outside San Francisco to explore the nearby, quaint towns that add their own sense of charm. Whether you’re in search of a lighted boat (or tractor) parade, artisan craft fairs, or a visit to the North Pole, each one of these towns has its own unique set of holiday traditions that will entertain the entire family. NIGHT OF LIGHTS Dec. 13 Visit Half Moon Bay for their charming annual holiday event. The Night of Lights consists of a tree-lighting ceremony in Mac Dutra Plaza, followed by the colorful Parade of Lights down Main Street. HOT CHOCOLATE BAR AT RITZ-CARLTON

Dec. 14 Half Moon Bay takes its Annual Boat Decorating Contest seriously, giving members of the community a chance to step up their decoration game and compete for the best-decorated boat. Whether or not you can attend the contest, visitors can stroll along Pillar Point Harbor all month long to check out the uniquely lit-up boats.

Dec. 1-31 The Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay is always decked out for the holidays, with holiday trees, garlands and wreaths displayed throughout the resort, including a 25-foot holiday tree on the Ocean Lawn. This year, every weekend in December and on Christmas Day, the resort will offer a Hot Chocolate Bar that includes all the toppings you can imagine. Think marshmallows, chocolate shavings, whipped cream, sprinkles, graham crackers and chocolate sauce—all of which you can enjoy overlooking the ocean.
